Abstract:

Abstract:
Summary A hitherto unknown fragment of Jacob van Maerlant’s Historie van Troyen has been discovered in the binding of a composite volume of three post-incunables in the library of the Abbey of Berne in Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands. It is the nineteenth text witness of Maerlant’s text, which was already known as the most widely spread chivalric story in Middle Dutch, although only one complete manuscript has survived. This article offers a first edition of the tiny fragment (25 incomplete lines on each side) and discusses its variants in comparison with the complete manuscript and one other fragment with which it shows overlap. The new fragment seems to be the only known remnant of this manuscript, which probably had three columns per page (56 lines each). The form of the letters suggests that it dates from the first quarter of the fourteenth century, which makes it the third-oldest text witness of the Historie van Troyen. The linguistic characteristics of the verses suggest that this manuscript was written in the county of Flanders.

Abstract:
In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.Every physician-patient encounter is a conflict of interest. Every physician-payer encounter is also a conflict of interest.Wide-spread criticism of the pharmaceutical industry’s extravagant marketing practices and some doctors’ undignified, even appalling eagerness to stuff themselves, their pockets and their offices with the industry’s “stuff,” prompted physician groups, the drug and device industry itself (albeit synergized by the federal government’s ominous shadow) to institute reforms designed better to limit industry influence on physicians. But according to Troyen Brennan and his coauthors, the reforms, while reducing some of the most egregious instances of industry influence peddling and physicians’ self-debasement, were doomed fundamentally, for three reasons. First, they were based on common sense but incorrect assumptions about the mechanism of industry influence and on myths about the efficacy of disclosure as an ethical disinfectant. Second, they relied on voluntary adherence and so failed to pinpoint responsibility for monitoring compliance and enforcement.

Léontaridou, Théodora. "Le mythe troyen dans la littérature française." Paris 3, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA030013.

Full text
Abstract:
From the 16th Century until the 20th, le troyan myth emerges in a variety of forms in French literature with famous or less known works but of equal significance as they convey the climate and the spirit of an era. The reason why all of these writers go into mythology could be partly explained by the imitation of ancients applied to the French letters of the 16th and 17th centuries. How this material is transformed, what the writers are expressing through the legends and the myths, which is the relationship of the transformed materiel with the initial, are some of the questions that this research is requested to explore. During the period of the Absolutism in which the freedom of expression is limited, the myth is proved to be a secure means which offers the security of the distance, the suitable frame and the flexibility of the mythological material which are processed by the creators. It becomes the vehicle of doubt and criticism of various grades against authority. The end of this political period removes from the myth this function. But it doesn’t stop its use in literature and the theater. This is because the myth is capable of putting again questions for the vital causes which deal with the human race, such as the woman, the war, the xenophobia

Abstract:
This dissertation studies historical writing and mythological fiction in the Renaissance, taking its starting point in the myth of the Trojan origins of the Franks. Although centered upon Lemaire de Belges’s Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513), a grand genealogical fresco containing the legendary narratives of the loves of Pâris and of the Trojan War, the corpus extends to a vast intertextual network that includes the works of Bouchet, Thenaud, Helisenne de Crenne, and Ronsard. The uniqueness of the Illustrations is such that it allows us to observe and analyze with conspicuous acuity the interactions, at the time of the Renaissance, between history and poetic fiction. In particular, it enables us to measure the extent to which fiction may be merged with historical narrative, and to articulate the distinctive features of the two writing styles from poetic, rhetorical, and stylistic points of view. On the one hand, we consider the history of the Trojan myth from the Middle Ages to the end of the Renaissance. On the other, we analyze the special treatment reserved for mythology within the work, showing that the Trojan myth is both a quest in search of the true origins of a people and a plausible narrative embellished in highly imaginative prose. Finally, observing the differences among the various parts of the work, we shed light on the tension between a neutral and matter-of-fact style of the sort required by historical writing and a newly invented “poetic prose” enriched with rhetorical devices and freshly crafted expressions. The Illustrations is thus seen to open an exceptional window upon the historical and poetic worlds of the Renaissance

Abstract:
This masters essay aims to understand the symbolism of the Ganymede mosaic of the House of Dionysus in Nea Paphos (Cyprus) dated to the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 3rd century AD and to determine the room’s use. This double inquiry arises from the observation of the geometric details associated with the scene representing the rapt of the Trojan ephebe by an eagle. Firstly, the nature of the "rosette" associated with the figurative panel is analyzed with the iconographic documents and the ancient texts. The results of this analysis allow us to discuss the symbolic, ideological or philosophical-religious meaning that motifs would confer on the scene. Secondly, the arrangement of the "rosette" and other geometric patterns suggests that the room could have been used in a specific context. In addition to these decorative clues, the function of the room is also discussed according to architectural and planimetric data. Some conclusions about the symbolism that emerge from the study of the mosaic of Ganymede are then confronted with certain figured pavements found in the domus.

Abstract:
The myth of Troy provided more subject matter to 16th and 17th century French playwrights than any other ancient fable. The exceptional scope of this legend, the multitude of its scenes and characters, and the variety of available themes and viewpoints can partly explain this phenomenon. Yet this study seeks to demonstrate how the Trojan myth, through its unique legacy and structure, served as a model for exploring the problematics of an era marked by massive political and cultural transformation : the second half of the 16th century saw the birth of both the modern State and the modern theatre. Throughout the 150-year period which followed this simultaneous development, the use of the Trojan theme in different dramatic contexts can be understood in the light of the progression of aesthetic, political, ethical and theological ideas that accompanied the cultural transition at hand

Abstract:
This work focuses on the dynamics and the detection methods of co-orbital exoplanets. We call "co-orbital" any configuration in which two planets orbit with the same mean mean-motion around the same star. First, we revisit the results of the circular coplanar case. We also recall that the manifold associated to the coplanar case and the manifold corresponding to the circular case are both invariant by the flow of the averaged Hamiltonian. We hence study these two particular cases. We focus mainly on the coplanar case (eccentric), where we study the evolution of families of non-maximal quasi-periodic orbits parametrized by the eccentricity of the planets. We show that the geometry of these families is highly dependent on the eccentricity, which causes significant topology changes across the space of phases as the latter increases. A chapter is dedicated to the detection of co-orbital exoplanets. We recall the different detection methods adapted to the co-orbital case. We focus on the radial velocity technique, and the combination of radial velocity and transit measurements. Finally, we describe a method to study the effect of orbital perturbations on the spin-orbit resonances for a rigid body. We apply this method in two cases: the eccentric co-orbital case and the circumbinary case

Spears, Samuel Bruce. "A Study of Michael Praetorius' Megalynodia Sionia: An Historical and Stylistic Analysis and Selective Performing Edition." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/283.

Abstract:
Michael Praetorius was one of the most prolific and innovative Lutheran composers of the early seventeenth century. His Megalynodia Sionia ("The Magnificats of Zion") is a collection of fourteen Magnificats for use in Vespers services. The compositions in the collection present a series of complicated issues that modern editors and performers must unravel to be able to perform this music. The most common method for performing Magnificats at this time was alternatim, in which different musical groups alternated in performing verses. For eleven of the Magnificats in Megalynodia, only six of the twelve verses are supplied by Praetorius. Appropriate sources for the other verses must be identified. Also, there was a tradition in the Lutheran church of inserting chorales between the verses of the Magnificat on feast days. The chorales would be songs associated with the occasion, for example Christmas or Easter. Praetorius gives important instructions to prospective performers as to how these insertions should be chosen and performed. Eleven of the Magnificats are parodies of works by other composers, Orlando di Lasso in particular. Parody technique is the use of polyphonic music by another composer as source material for a new composition. It was a very typical compositional method of the sixteenth century. Lasso started a Continental tradition of using parody technique in the Magnificat; in this collection Praetorius follows in his footsteps. One must take all these issues into account in attempting to create modern performing editions of this music. The study culminates in performing editions of two Magnificats from the collection.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Hardware Trojans are malicious changes to the design of integrated circuits (ICs) at different stages of the design and fabrication processes. Different approaches have been developed to detect Trojans namely non-destructive (electrical tests like run-time monitoring, functional and structural tests) and destructive (full chip reverse engineering). However, these methods cannot detect all types of Trojans and they suffer from a number of disadvantages such as slow speed of detection and lack of confidence in detecting all types of Trojans. Majority of hardware Trojans implemented in an IC will leave a footprint at the doping (active) layer. In this paper, we introduce a new version of our previously developed “Trojan Scanner” [1] framework for the untrusted foundry threat model, where a trusted GDSII layout (golden layout) is available. Advanced computer vision algorithms in combination with the supervised machine-learning model are used to classify different features of the golden layout and SEM images from an IC under authentication, as a unique descriptor for each type of gates. These descriptors are compared with each other to detect any subtle changes on the active region, which can raise the flag for the existence of a potential hardware Trojan. The descriptors can differentiate variation due to fabrication process, defects, and common SEM image distortions to rule out the possibility of false detection. Our results demonstrate that Trojan Scanner is more reliable than electrical testing and faster than full chip reverse engineering. Trojan Scanner does not rely on the functionality of the circuit rather focuses on the real physical structure to detect malicious changes inserted by the untrusted foundry.

Abstract:
Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to Neural Trojan (NT) attacks where the adversary injects malicious behaviors during DNN training. This type of ‘backdoor’ attack is activated when the input is stamped with the trigger pattern specified by the attacker, resulting in an incorrect prediction of the model. Due to the wide application of DNNs in various critical fields, it is indispensable to inspect whether the pre-trained DNN has been trojaned before employing a model. Our goal in this paper is to address the security concern on unknown DNN to NT attacks and ensure safe model deployment. We propose DeepInspect, the first black-box Trojan detection solution with minimal prior knowledge of the model. DeepInspect learns the probability distribution of potential triggers from the queried model using a conditional generative model, thus retrieves the footprint of backdoor insertion. In addition to NT detection, we show that DeepInspect’s trigger generator enables effective Trojan mitigation by model patching. We corroborate the effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability of DeepInspect against the state-of-the-art NT attacks across various benchmarks. Extensive experiments show that DeepInspect offers superior detection performance and lower runtime overhead than the prior work.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the comparison of the terminology of tropes and fi gures in the rhetorical treatises by M. Lomonosov and in the East Slavonic rhetorical treatises of the 17th century. Unlike his pre-decessors, Lomonosov provides strict differentiation between Greek borrowings and lexemes which are Russian by origin and doesn’t allow any terminological redundancy. Oscillations that Lomonosov experienced during the nomination of tropes and fi gures are also analyzed. It is shown how exactly Lomonosov creatively works on the terminological heritage of his predecessors. We also reveal the source of the list of fi gures placed in the «Materials for Russian grammar».

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to study the history of traditional Japanese trowel process. The research study were conducted the trowel blade which was made from SK5 steel. Microstructure and grain sizes were accurately measured by using the optical microscope (OM). The resultant microstructures of hardening were observed as martensite. After the tempering process, the result of microstructure found the temper-martensite structure. In the hardening process was heated up 800–850°C to austenite structure and quenched in cooling oil. Moreover, in the annealing process was quenched into straw ashes for cooling after heat up until 750°C. All heat treatment temperature and surface quality were observed and controlled by eyesight and experience of Japanese expert.
