Abstract:
Lumbosacral plexopathy is a relatively rare entity with a variety of etiology and pathophysiology. The diagnosis of lumbosacral plexopathy requires high index of suspicion and knowledge of the detailed anatomy of the lumbosacral plexus is a prerequisite to the accurate conclusion. This case describes a young woman with injury to the lumbosacral trunk (cord), a main component of the lumbosacral plexus, occurring during the delivery of her newborn and outlines its mechanism of action, pathophysiology and risks. The case highlights also the differential diagnosis of lumbosacral plexopathy and discusses the most common causes including retroperitoneal hemorrhage, lumbosacral plexitis, and intrapartum maternal lumbosacral plexopathy.

Abstract:
Axillary nerve lesions are relatively uncommon peripheral nerve lesions most often encountered after trauma to the shoulder including dislocation and fracture. They are often confused and may be difficult to distinguish clinically from cervical radiculopathy and shoulder joint or tendon pathology, such as rotator cup tear and impingment syndrome. Axillary mononeuropathy may be also a component of neuralgic amyotrophy (acute brachial neuritis, Parsonage-Turner syndrome). This case discusses anatomy of the axillary nerve and highlights the clinical and electrodiagnostic manifestations of axillary mononeuropathy. It also distinguishes axillary nerve lesions from posterior cord brachial plexopathy, upper trunk brachial plexopathy, and C5 and C6 radiculopathies.

Abstract:
Understanding the interactions between the components of a system is key to understanding it. In complex systems, interactions are usually not uniform, not isotropic and not homogeneous: each interaction can be specific between elements.Networks are a tool for keeping track of who is interacting with whom, at what strength, when, and in what way. Networks are essential for understanding of the co-evolution and phase diagrams of complex systems. Here we provide a self-contained introduction to the field of network science. We introduce ways of representing and handle networks mathematically and introduce the basic vocabulary and definitions. The notions of random- and complex networks are reviewed as well as the notions of small world networks, simple preferentially grown networks, community detection, and generalized multilayer networks.

Abstract:
Developmental psychologists typically have viewed gender development as learning which group one belongs to and what behaviors are associated with each group. A typical chapter on gender development would focus on delineating the components of gender such as male-female differences and debates about the origin of those differences. It would present accounts of the development of a gender identity as a male or a female as well as the consequences of personal gender identity throughout the life span. This chapter takes a different track: It contends that those scientific accounts of the study of gender are themselves a product of a gender system, which provides both the meaning and evaluation of gender categories. The authors show how our ways of thinking about gender categories arise from the gendered organization of society, allocation of power, and cultural beliefs.

Rosen, David H., and Uyen B. Hoang. The Patient-Centered Interview. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190628871.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the focus is on the patient-centered interview as a basic tool that uses inherent principles of the biopsychosocial model to talk to patients. There are four key approaches to patient interviewing: the science of observation, following the affect, the concept of process, and the A.R.T. of interviewing. Observational skills can be refined to yield valuable clinical data. Follow-the-affect helps to guide the interview in relation to what the patient is feeling, and it acknowledges the importance of students’ abilities to keep track of their own feelings. The interview process segment holds there is a process level to all communication between people. The A.R.T. of interviewing attempts to offer a conceptual link between process and content. The mnemonic device refers to three components: assessment, rankings, and transition. Last, there is a section that offers clinical pearls, mnemonics, and tricks of the trade.

Abstract:
Head and neck cancer (HNC) refers to tumours arising from the epithelial lining of the upper aerodigestive track, including the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, paranasal sinuses, and salivary glands. There are 50,000 cases of HNC diagnosed annually within the United States. The majority of tumours (> 90%) are squamous cell carcinomas. Risk factors include tobacco, alcohol, and areca nuts; human papilloma virus (HPV) or Epstein-Barr virus; and mucosal irritation. Previously considered to be a disease of older adults, the epidemic of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers has led to a striking increase in HNC among middle-aged adults. Symptoms are usually present at the time of diagnosis and remain problematic through the terminal phase. For those patients who are cured, long-term biopsychosocial sequelae may persist for years. Thus, assessment and treatment of palliative issues is an intrinsic and vital component of care for the HNC patient.
