Abstract:
BackgroundThere is much enthusiasm from clinicians, industry and the government to utilise digital technologies and introduce alternatives to face-to-face consultations. Objective(s)To define good practice and inform digital technology implementation in relation to remote consultations via Skype™ (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA, USA) and similar technologies.DesignMultilevel mixed-methods study of remote video consultations (micro level) embedded in an organisational case study (meso level), taking account of the national context and wider influences (macro level).SettingThree contrasting clinical settings (Diabetes, Antenatal Diabetes and Cancer Surgery) in a NHS acute trust.Data collection and analysisMacro level – interviews with 12 national-level stakeholders combined with document analysis. Meso level – longitudinal organisational ethnography comprising over 300 hours of observations, 24 staff interviews and analysis of 16 documents. Micro level – 30 video-recorded remote consultations; 17 matched audio-recorded face-to-face consultations. Interview and ethnographic data were analysed thematically and theorised using strong structuration theory. Consultations were transcribed verbatim and analysed using the Roter interaction analysis system (RIAS), producing descriptive statistics on different kinds of talk and interaction.ResultsPolicy-makers viewed remote video consultations as a way of delivering health care efficiently in the context of rising rates of chronic illness and growing demand for services. However, the reality of establishing such services in a busy and financially stretched NHS acute trust proved to be far more complex and expensive than anticipated. Embedding new models of care took much time and many resources, and required multiple workarounds. Considerable ongoing effort was needed to adapt and align structures, processes and people within clinics and across the organisation. For practical and safety reasons, virtual consultations were not appropriate for every patient or every consultation. By the end of this study, between 2% and 20% of all consultations were being undertaken remotely in participating clinics. Technical challenges in setting up such consultations were typically minor, but potentially prohibitive. When clinical, technical and practical preconditions were met, virtual consultations appeared to be safe and were popular with both patients and staff. Compared with face-to-face consultations, virtual consultations were very slightly shorter, patients did slightly more talking and both parties sometimes needed to make explicit things that typically remained implicit in a traditional encounter. Virtual consultations appeared to work better when the clinician and the patient knew and trusted each other. Some clinicians used Skype adaptively to support ad hoc clinician-initiated and spontaneous patient-initiated encounters. Other clinicians chose not to use the new service model at all.ConclusionsVirtual consultations appear to be safe, effective and convenient for patients who are preselected by their clinicians as ‘suitable’, but such patients represent a small fraction of clinic workloads. There are complex challenges to embedding virtual consultation services within routine practice in the NHS. Roll-out (across the organisation) and scale-up (to other organisations) are likely to require considerable support.LimitationsThe focus on a single NHS organisation raises questions about the transferability of findings, especially quantitative data on likely uptake rates.Future researchFurther studies on the micro-analysis of virtual consultations and on the spread and scale-up of virtual consulting services are planned.FundingThe National Institute for Health Research Health Services and Delivery Research programme.

Abstract:
The case is about restructuring of the sales force compensation system at Service Sales Corporation (SSC), a large shoe retailer in Pakistan. The organization went through many changes in its supply chain management starting in 2001, when a new COO, Omer Saeed, took over. There was a major increase in sales and the number of shops, and a decrease in the number of salesmen per shop with the net effect that some salesmen were drawing a compensation of ₹25,000–30,000 per month (standard salesmen salary in smaller shops was ₹8,000 per month). When the new COO Amer Mohsin joined in 2009, he was faced with the challenge of designing a salesmen compensation system that was in line with the growth of the organization. The case provides an opportunity to understand how different compensation systems are required as company dynamics change.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: In 2014, epidemic chikungunya virus (CHIKV) emerged in Puerto Rico, concurrent with endemic dengue (DENV). The Department of Health mandated blood donation quarantine for 72h pending follow-up donor contact for infectious symptoms. The American Red Cross (ARC) halted local platelet collections and began importing blood components. Imported platelet components (PCs) from the continental U.S. were used to supply hospitals in the Caribbean. An alternative strategy is local PC production with amotosalen +UVA (A-UVA) pathogen reduction (PR) technology (INTERCEPT™ Blood System, Cerus Corporation, Concord, CA) as utilized by the French Transfusion Service in the Overseas Territories, including the Caribbean since 2007. The major logistical advantage of such a strategy is earlier PC availability to hospitals since there is no need to wait for the results of bacterial culture, or transport of PCs from the continental U.S. A-UVA technology inactivates bacteria, viruses, parasites and leukocytes by efficient covalent adduct modification of DNA and RNA, thus addressing risks of bacterial contamination and reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection (TTI). Treatment with A-UVA also prevents transfusion associated graft vs. host disease (TA-GVHD) in an animal model, inhibits clonal T cell proliferation, prevents allogeneic antigen stimulation in mixed lymphocyte reactions, and inhibits transcription mediated cytokine production and early activation antigen expression (Corash et al, BMT 2004) and is recognized by the AABB as a replacement for gamma irradiation in the prevention of TA-GVHD. Aims: A treatment use clinical study (TRUE) was conducted in Puerto Rico under the Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) early/expanded access regulations while the INTERCEPT Premarket approval (PMA) application was under review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The objective of the TRUE study was to provide early access to INTERCEPT to reduce the risk of TTIs during the ongoing CHIKV/DENV epidemic. Methods: A prospective, open label, single arm, treatment use, multi-center study was conducted involving 7 hospitals and the ARC. Apheresis (Trima® or Amicus® collectors) leukocyte-reduced PR PCs, suspended in 100% plasma without gamma irradiation, bacterial contamination testing, or the need for CMV serology were produced. Safety outcome measures included all adverse events (AEs), serious adverse events (SAEs) and acute transfusion reactions. Patients were transfused with study PCs according to local practices for as long as clinically indicated. Results: 90 patients (55.6% male, mean age 67.2 y) were transfused with 256 PR PCs (2.8 ± 3.5/patient). The vast majority of the patients were hematology oncology patients (76.7%). Most patients (81.1%) received 1 transfusion cycle (transfusion support without > 5 days between transfusions) with 2 PR PCs (40.0%), while 32.2% received 1 PR PC, and 25.6% received between 3-10 PR PCs. Mean duration of platelet support was 14.7 days. Thirty-three unrelated AEs were reported in 26 patients. Nineteen patients (21.1%) had unrelated SAEs (including 17 deaths [18.9%]). Two febrile non-hemolytic reactions and one allergic transfusion reaction were reported and deemed unrelated to INTERCEPT by the investigators. No suspected cases of CHIKV or DENV infections or other TTIs were reported. Reported AEs were within the expected spectrum of co-morbidity and mortality for patients of similar age with advanced hematology-oncology diseases. Conclusions: The INTERCEPT Blood System was rapidly deployed in response to the CHIKV and DENV epidemic with replacement of bacterial detection, gamma irradiation and the need for CMV serology. No PR PC related AEs were reported. INTERCEPT was approved in late 2014 by the FDA to treat Amicus apheresis PCs suspended in platelet additive solution and in 2016 for Trima PCs suspended in 100% plasma. The importance of this proactive technology is highlighted by the recent emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV). FDA has recently requested that all blood establishments in Puerto Rico and in certain counties in Florida cease collecting blood immediately until investigational donor screening test for ZIKV RNA is implemented or until they implement the use of an approved or investigational pathogen reduction technology. Abstract As the competition environment change rapidly, customer relationship management is significant to the foundation of all business marketing. In order to conquer this battle in marketing and to found an ongoing competition privilege, it’s not only necessary to expand a new market, but it’s also critical to maintain a long term relationship with old customers, and to prevent them from switching to your competitors. Therefore, enterprise must analyze and recognize customer’s intention, so as to plot a successful managing strategy. This research, which took place since Jan-15th-2002 to Jan-21st-2002, applied systematic sampling as sample method and took the actuality of examination trustees in Yun-lin, Jia yi and Tai nan county. It contents 3229 samples, and the retrieve rate is 10.99%. Many quantitative methods including regression analysis, path analysis are used to evaluate the relationship between customer’s intention and examination trustee’s corporation image, service value, quality and customer satisfaction. I also investigate the cause that affects the customer’s intention as reference for the examination trustees to improve their customer service and for government officers to improve their performance. The result indicates that the corporate image and service quality have positive impact on loyalty behavior of customer’s behavioral intention. The external reflection behavior has positive impact on loyalty behavior of customer’s behavioral intention through the intervening variable(customer satisfaction, company image). The external reflection behavior has negative impact on switch behavior of behavioral intention through the intervening variable(service value). Through the analysis it shows that, being tangible and empathy concerned the customer of the service quality have positive impact on customer satisfaction, service value, loyalty behavior of customer’s behavioral intention. The examination trustees needs to improve their tangible service and concerned their customer in order to increase their customer’s loyalty behavior. The path analysis indicates that service quality and internal response are unrelated. Might be more important factors existing and worthily research in the feature.

This research focused on the growth dynamics of Information Service Industry by Systemic Dynamic. Information Service Industry is an economic indicator for the industrial. It established the structure of the systemic dynamics through the history of this case study. Obviously this company's turnover created new high repeatedly during 2005 to 2007, but actually it slumped down during 2008 to 2011. This company had the opportunity to create the peak again, why it didn’t keep the growing up. This research was using systemic dynamics viewpoint to establish the structure which showed its growth dynamics, then discovered that owner's mental model affects the decision-making which promoted in causal feedback loop of interior and exterior operations of the company. This is the key point which thwarts an industry’s growth. We tested repeatedly and used policy simulation by the levels of customers, the reputation, the projects, the salesmen and the engineers which attempted to solve improper policies, growth and underinvestment which caused a serial of feedback effects. The research discovered unique phenomenon in this industry was to make too highly sales objective for employee, it caused more the turnover once these new salesmen unable to achieve; After that, the owner adjusted initial objective and enhances year by year, the turnover of salesman would occur again when objective is hard to achieve, therefore the higher turnover of salesman comes along with lower rate of transaction, so this research in the simulation process, removes the changes for adjustment of sales objective and rate of transaction increasing highly. After increasing, engineers are unable to shoulder more loadings that cause the senior experts to leave, the productions drop with the average experience which also influences reputation effect and customer numbers. All in all, it’s very important in producing disposition of this industry, and how to hires engineers that will keep the enterprise growing up steadily. According to working loading to create employment mode, it will cause what kind of damages to the company? We can realize the problem of the case study which faces typical growth and underinvestment by establishing simulation structure and causal feedback loop.Making a policy design which attempts to solve the problem and improve the present state is suitable for the industry from the system simulation.

The purpose of establishing Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF)mainly focuses on reducing the financial burden of the government. However, after more than ten years of operation, the performance of the pension fund still cannot significantly improve due to the limitation of attributes, functions and human resources of organization. This, together with the adjustment of contribution rates to reflect the normal costs, has received universal condemnation and worries about how to improve the operation of the fund in order to relieve the pressure of raising contribution rates. Due to the gradual increase of workloads caused by the continued growth of fund scale, fund participants and the number of retirees receiving regularly payments, it seems to be necessary to inspect and review the attributes, functions and human resources of the fund management agency. As the quality of the fund operation has crucial effects to the payment ability of the PSPF, and the expenditure burden of all fund participants and different levels of local governments, whether the fund management agency has proper organization structure, whether it is suitable to adopt the craft industry, and how to cope with the drawbacks of present system and management are the main points of this research. While the government is actively boosting “administrative corporation”, which is more flexible and possesses business spirit, with the aim of promoting integral competitiveness of the government, this research first literarily discusses public corporation system of Germany, Britain and Japan, and the current management state of main countries in the world. This is followed by an analysis of current management and operation state of the PSPF, and questionnaires filled by the employees of the Management Board of PSPF to understand their opinions on changing to administrative corporation. The analysis is reinforced by a deep interview, SWOT analysis and so on to investigate the feasibility of administrative corporation system for the management agency of PSPF.. This research finds out that being unable to operate independently, due to the limitations of organization attributes, functions and human resources, the PSPF’s management performance has been negatively influenced. Judging from agency functions, “administrative corporation” can be a suitable system for the organization. However, with considerations like inclined liabilities, final disbursement duty, and the Administrative Corporation Act still pending for legislative approval, it is suggested that a clear distinction between the inclined liabilities and final disbursement duty of the government and the administrative corporation has to be made, together with a consideration of the retirement system, before the “administrative corporation” system is put into real practice.

The attitude on the management of each enterprise are carefully and diligently in order to avoid of being ranked out of the market because of careless mistakes. To make competitors lag behind us gradually by using intrinsic superiority and maintain the unshakable positions in the industry is very important. In the global PC industry, competitions are not only domestic companies, but also foreign ones. In such environment, the enterprises will be eliminated through competition easily if they do not catch up while lag behind. We can tell from the ranking variation in the past 10 years. In the early 10 years, the top 5 PC brands are American or Japanese. However, two Chinese brands have climbing to top 5 brands in the last five years. Project management research began to be paid much attention to and became a science gradually since the A-bomb plan during World War II. It adapts many tools to assist the project management create and quantitative data. By analyzing the quantitative data, many relative theories, standard procedures and practical methods are brought out. People who are not familiar with project management can process the project smoothly and increase the percentage of success by adapting the methods. For not being eliminated through competition, enterprises must always follow the trend. During the execution of the project, some steps could not be carried out by following project theories and methods. The main purpose of the project management is to resolve the problems of the enterprises. A successful project can help the enterprises pass the crisis promptly. In this situation, the communication becomes an important tool. Closely and repeated communication can not only help the project member understand the background, process, problem but also figure out the solution rapidly.

Abstract:
Dell Computer Corporation founded by Michael Dell started in 1985 and has become the world's leading computer systems company today. Dell's motto is simple: to design, build, and customize products and services to satisfy a range of customer requirements. A few years after introducing its next-day on-site service, which will become the company core of its competitive edge, Dell started to expand internationally with the opening of many subsidiaries. This chapter assesses the feasibility of implementing Dell's model and its impacts on a third-world economies such as Ghana. Key factors such as the Ghana natural and human resources are assessed. The findings show that certain attributes must be in place to facilitate the JIT business model, especially when looking at emerging markets like Ghana with a clue on what it takes to implement the business model application in manufacturing, service, or production settings.

Abstract:
The number of cellular phone subscribers has reached a total of 5.6 million in Taiwan (NCC, 2007). Meanwhile, Internet users have reached a total of 14.5 million and mobile Internet users have broken the record of 9.1 million in 2006 (NCC, 2007). The combination of information and telecommunication technologies has brought people a new communication method—cellular value-added services, which have become a lucrative business for telecommunication providers in Taiwan. One result of the cellular value-added services presented to the public brought the information-based, messaging-based, and financial services into one kit; people can not only communicate through the cellular phones but also use them as versatile handsets. Do- CoMo, a famous Japanese telecommunication provider, has successfully cultivated the cellular value-added services. Its success can be explained with two reasons: one is content, and Web site providers are willing to share their technical support; and the other reason is the establishment of an automated payment system to assist the cash flow between providers and even beef up the whole industry by associating related business partners (Natsuno, 2001). Comparing with DoCoMo’s case, the telecommunication service providers in Taiwan have provided various cellular value-added services. However, the popularity of the service does not turn out to be as good as expected. We are wondering why. Telecommunication providers began to adjust the fee of short message service (SMS) down to 25% maximally since June 2004 in Taiwan. The idea of lowering fees is to stimulate the popularity of SMS usage. Would that bring a collateral effect to the providers of cellular value-added service positively or negatively? In response, this research will discuss the challenges facing Taiwanese cellular value-added service providers. Hinet, Taiwan Cellular Corporation (TCC), and Flyma online service providers have been chosen as research companies.

Abstract:
The conditions of the golden age liberated Massachusetts State College from the forces that had restricted its development since the nineteenth century. In spurts of growth linked to demographic and political cycles, M.S.C. mushroomed from a limited-purpose college into a comprehensive university and from a single campus in Amherst into a multicampus system, with units in Worcester and Boston and a statewide president’s office. By the end of the period, UMass seemed finally to have joined its counterparts in western states as a full-fledged public university in the land grant tradition, with strong programs of graduate education and research built on a large undergraduate base and linked to public service activities of applied research and nondegree instruction. The evolutionary process remained incomplete, however, and Massachusetts was still Massachusetts. The state’s nonelite private institutions watched the public expansion nervously and organized to protect their interests. Other components of the public system, including the state colleges and a new network of community colleges, vied for support from an intensely politicized government still unsure of its role in higher education. Though the effort during the 1930s to transform Massachusetts State College into a full public university had ended in failure when the General Court shelved the enabling legislation, the university movement had gained important ground. In particular, by the end of the prewar decade, the loose coalition of students, alumni/ae, and organized labor that had kept the movement alive had stirred public interest and won support from the college’s trustees as well as its president, Hugh Potter Baker. Baker himself, with his roots in the scientific-technical traditions of land grant education, had been slow to endorse a broadened conception of his institution but once converted had become an eloquent and persistent advocate. Believing, despite his disappointment over the legislature’s inaction, that World War II would foster increased interest in higher education and create new opportunities for M.S.C., Baker used his annual reports during the war to reiterate the central arguments of the university movement: that, in comparison with other states, Massachusetts was not providing adequate support for public higher education; that demand for places at the college far exceeded enrollment capacity; that the region’s private institutions were not prepared to respond to the need; and that large numbers of Massachusetts residents were being forced to attend public universities in other states.

Abstract:
Research on project champions has focused on the characteristics of this individual and how to provide encouragement and support. An understanding of the role of project champion is shortsighted, however, without a realization of what can happen to an expert system (ES) project and what can be done, should this individual depart. This paper discusses the ES project champion by examining the experiences of Ciba-Geigy Corporation with an ES project impeded by the departure of the project champion. The OpBright expert system, developed to support the identification of appropriate optical brightener products by sales representatives, was intended to provide a competitive advantage through superior customer service. With the promotion and transfer of the vital force committed to the project’s success, the ES encountered a stalemate. The difficulties in maintaining momentum for the ES without a project champion are discussed. Finally, suggestions are presented to guide organizations away from the same fate.

Abstract:
In the past decade I have received several hundred letters of inquiry from students asking for advice about education and careers. Most want to know how to combine their passion for the natural world with formal education in order to craft a useful life. The letters and e-mails are often written in a tone of frustration. An undergraduate biology major, for example, writes: “I have been researching my options, and I have come to the conclusions [sic] that there are quite a number of programs labeled ‘conservation biology’ or ‘environmental studies’ around the country. It is fairly easy to become lost in a sea of them. I attended the Society for Conservation Biology meeting in Maryland, but failed to find any prospective advisors. Would you have any advice to offer on this topic?” Similarly, a recent Ph.D. in wildlife biology writes: “I am struggling to translate my professional training into a life well lived that in some way might contribute to preserving the natural world and not just documenting its decline. . . . My professional training did not prepare me well for these tasks.” Dozens of other letters have the same plaintive themes. The problem is not simply that there are many more students who want practical careers in environmental work than those who find them. The deeper problem has to do with the experience of students as they pass through the system of higher education. Whatever they once may have been, institutions of higher education have become vast and expensively operated machines much like any for-profit corporation. Students are fed through a conveyor belt of requirements, large classes, deadlines, and general busy-ness. What they learn seldom adds up to anything like a coherent, ecologically solvent worldview. The scale of most institutions is not conducive to humane interaction. Seldom encouraged to discern an inner calling, students are more often counseled to find secure careers that pay well. Nonetheless, many students still feel a calling toward service that runs counter to the incentives, values, and structure of their formal education.

Abstract:
Enterprise resource planning systems can be defined as customizable, standard application software which includes integrated business solutions for the core processes and administrative functions (Chan & Rosemann, 2001). From an operative perspective, ERP systems provide a common technological platform unique for the entire corporation allowing the replacement of mainframes and legacy systems. This common platform serves to process automation as well as to simplify current process either by an explicit reengineering process or by the implicit adoption of the system “best practices” (Markus & Tanis, 2000). Finally, the common centralized platform allows the access to data that previously were physically or logically dispersed. The automation of the processes and the access to data allows the reduction of operating times (thus reducing operating costs) while the latter serves to a better support of business decisions (see e.g., Umble, Haft & Umble, 2003 for a detailed review of ERP benefits). ERP is considered to provide businesses with new opportunities to acquire knowledge (Srivardhana & Pawlowski, 2007), being the sources of knowledge the aforementioned best practices from the ERP, and the ERP software company’s staff during the implementation phase. At present, ERP systems are either used or implemented in a large number of enterprises. According to Genoulaz and Millet (2006), up to 74% of manufacturing companies and up to 59% of service companies use an ERP system. In addition, more than 70% of Fortune 1000 companies have implemented core ERP applications (Bingi, Sharma, Godla, 1999; Yen, Chou & Chang, 2002). The objectives for implementing an ERP system can be classified as operational, strategic, dual (operational plus strategic), or without objective (Law & Ngai, 2007). The adoption of an ERP system with operational objectives is aimed at improvement operating efficiency together with the reduction of costs, while companies implementing ERP with a strategic objective would experience a change in business processes, improving sales and market expansion. A widespread critique to ERP systems is their high total cost of ownership (Al-Mashari, Al-Mudimigh & Zairi, 2003) and hidden costs in implementation (Kwon & Lee, 2001). Besides, ERP systems impose their own logic on an organization’s strategy and culture (Davenport, 1998), so ERP adopters must adapt their business processes and organization to these models and rules. Consequently, organizations may face difficulties through this adaptation process which is usually carried out without widespread employee involvement. This may cause sore employees, sterile results due to the lack of critical information usually provided by the employees; and also late delivery, with reduced functionality, and/or with higher costs that expected (Kraemmeraard, Moeller & Boer, 2003). Additionally, some analysts have speculated that widespread adoption of the same ERP package in the same industry might lead to loss of competitive advantage due to the elimination of process innovation-based competitive advantage (Davenport, 1998). This has been observed, for instance, in the semiconductor manufacturers sector (Markus & Tanis, 2000). The early stage of ERP was carried out through Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) systems (Umble, Haft & Umble, 2003). The next generation of these systems, MRP II (Manufacturing Resources Planning), crossed the boundaries of the production functionality and started supporting not only manufacturing, but also finance and marketing decisions (Ptak & Schragenheim, 2000). Current ERP systems appeared in the beginning of the 1990’s as evolved MRP II, incorporating aspects from CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) as well as from EDP (Electronic Data Processing). Therefore, ERP systems become enterprise-wide, multilevel decision support systems. ERP systems continue evolving, incorporating Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Supply Chain Management (SCM), Product Data Management (PDM), or Geographic Information Systems (GIS), among others (Kwon & Lee, 2001).

Abstract:
The Office of Research and Development of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is sponsoring a project to develop and demonstrate an on-board condition monitoring system for freight trains. The objective of the system is to improve railroad safety and efficiency through continuous monitoring of mechanical components in order to detect defects before they cause breakdowns and accidents. The project, which commenced in June 1999, is part of the Rolling Stock Program Element in FRA’s Five-Year Strategic Plan for Railroad Research, Development and Demonstrations [1]. Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Wilcoxon Research (WR) designed and developed a prototype system in 2000. The prototype system was tested during the period Nov. 2000–Nov. 2001 on a vehicle provided by the Research and Tests Department at Norfolk Southern Corporation. A Revenue Service Demonstration is scheduled to commence in October 2003. The monitoring system will be installed on five coal hopper cars and tested in revenue service. Southern Company Service is providing the test cars. The train will operate on a Norfolk Southern line between a coalmine near Berry, AL and an electric power plant, located 35 miles southeast of Birmingham. The demonstration is scheduled to run for six months. The demonstration will showcase some of the latest technologies in wireless communications and railroad bearings. A tri-mode cell telephone will be used for data telemetry between the on-board monitoring system and a web-accessible database. The Timken Company has developed two innovative systems that will be deployed in the demonstration — a permanent magnet generator mounted inside a Class F railroad bearing and bearing health monitoring system featuring temperature and vibration sensors, a tachometer, a micro-controller and an RF transmitter mounted inside a Class F bearing.

Abstract:
Alzeta Corporation has developed surface-stabilized fuel injectors for use in lean-premixed low-emissions combustion systems. These injectors use a patented technique to form interacting high-flow and low-flow flame zones immediately above a selectively-perforated porous metal surface. This allows stable operation at low reaction temperatures conducive for preventing high NOx formation. Solar Turbines and Alzeta had previously worked together to evaluate single-injector and full-scale proof-of-concept test hardware. This paper presents results of a combustion system developed for evaluation on an engine. The next-generation hardware has evolved to include a pilot to handle low engine speeds, and flow circuits have been adjusted to meet low-pressure drop requirements. Screening tests of the full-scale system have been completed at simulated engine conditions in a full-scale rig. Single-digit NOx and CO emissions have been achieved without encountering combustion-driven instabilities. The combustion system demonstrated adequate power turndown with the assistance of the pilot module, and studies to predict the service life of burners have been initiated.

Abstract:
As the use of alternative energy sources increases globally, there exists a need for a smart grid system to handle the increased power capacity. As part of this new power grid, a new type of intelligent universal transformer (IUT) has been developed to enhance power quality, throughput and efficiency to tackle green initiatives and enable distribution automation based on a control system. Using solid-State technology, specifically the SGTO module developed by the Electronic Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Silicon Power Corporation (SPCO), the IUT has the capacity to better optimize the existing transmission system while simultaneously delivering reliable diverse power, such as 400Hz service, DC service for hybrid-electric (plug-in) vehicles and three-phase power from a single phase line. This paper explores the thermal challenges associated with the design of the intelligent universal transformer, specifically designing for a high system heat load of 6 kW in an ambient temperature of 50°C. The system must use natural convection to prevent the use of mineral oils in a forced convection case such that there is no ecological concern. The system must also meet weight constraints, sufficiently handle a common household current draw of 110A and uphold its structural integrity. The high system heat load is applied using IcePak and a sufficient design is solved for numerically using FLUENT.
