Abstract:
Flavobacterium columnare is a well known worldwide pathogen, causative agent of Columnaris disease, elicting significant problems in freshwater fish including aquariums, culture places, natural surroundings. The first time the bacteria was described and named by Herber Spencer Davis. The name has changed for several times till reached the one is used now (Bacillus columnaris, Cytophaga columnaris, Chondrococcus columnaris, Flexibacter columnaris). In the industry of USA catfish this pathogen causes millions of dollars of losses. According to the statistics of the year 2003, the industry lost more than 30 millions of dollars of income. F. columnare in fish infections may cause skin lesions, fin erosions and gill necrosis, with a high degree of mortality. Cultured on Cytophaga agar grows mostly in rhizoit type very much adhesive collonies coloured in yellow due to pigment flexirubinin. One of the most revieling biochemical tests – absorbance of Congo red dye. Also it can be diagnosed by many serological and molecular assays. Preventive control should be used regularly involving potassium permanganate, copper sulphate or other desinfecant, which is available for F. columnare on the market. The latest treatment described for columnariosis is based upon phages which prevent the growth of F. columnare or kill it, but there are many studies to be done before making any conlusions. The aim of the research – to evaluate morfophysiological status and infestation with Flavobacterium... [to full text]

Bright, Susan. "Home truths : photography and motherhood." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2017. http://research.gold.ac.uk/20537/.

Full text
Abstract:
Home Truths is a curatorial project that examines photographic artworks depicting the experience and symbolism of motherhood in contemporary Western culture. Favouring autobiographical and documentary approaches in art photography of the 2000s, my curatorial practice draws on feminist precedents in art making and writing. There are four main outcomes to this project: an exhibition; an edited book; public programmes and a digital display titled Motherlode. In its entirety Home Truths negotiates what it means to be a mother in the twenty-first century, grappling with stereotypes, personal expectations and cultural constraints, revealing the maternal self to have both agency and power. The artists featured include: Janine Antoni, Elina Brotherus, Elinor Carucci, Ana Casas Broda, Fred Hüning, Leigh Ledare, Hanna Putz, Katie Murray, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Tierney Gearon, Miyako Ishuichi and Ann Fessler. In this thesis I investigate contemporary ‘maternal ambivalence’, which I identify as a response to social norms, expectations and the cultural conditions of mothering. I use the frame of ‘life narrative’ to examine maternal ambivalence in the artworks I have curated, contextualizing these within depictions of mothering in the larger photographic culture of motherhood. This thesis outlines the emergence and contextualization of the curated project and takes an expanded view of the possibilities of curating. I examine how Home Truths functioned in relation to institutions, audiences, aesthetics and display culture through the conditions (institutional, economic, aesthetic and theoretical) in which it existed. Crucially, I ask how one experiences the photography in Home Truths. Rather than viewing the different iterations of maternal life narratives examined here (literature, art photography and social networking) in contradistinction, I argue for them to be seen as productive expressions of self whose invocation of maternal subjectivities are reinforced and sustained by their relationship to one another.

Abstract:
JUDGE: Go away Barbara. I’ve had enough. Should we all be kind? You are lukewarm and will be vomited. There are two camps, Barbara, mine and theirs. Either you are with, or you are against. Although English playwright Caryl Churchill wrote the three scripts examined in this thesis more than thirty years ago, each captures our contemporary zeitgeist in sometimes surprising ways. These works explore the shifting politics of power, revealing binary and essentialist representations that not only continue but have been strengthened on all sides in recent years, suggesting their central importance in defining and controlling culture. This thesis examines how Churchill subverts conventional forms of representation and probes the ways in which she herself has been represented by critics and scholars at various periods of her writing career. It is my contention that these processes operate in tandem, performing an ongoing dialogue. Because of the dynamic nature of this dialogue, the aim here is not so much to provide an increasingly unified or finite understanding of the artistic milieu from which a play emerges, as it is to recognize the level of complexity underlying the mutable and political process of its interpretation. I have undertaken a detailed exploration of three lesser-known short scripts from 1972, a ‘watershed’ year for Churchill, culminating in the relative success of Owners, her first major stage play. While many of her earlier works have been deserving of further exploration, a number of them have been largely overlooked in the broader environment of her subsequent contribution to contemporary theatre. The particular scripts that I explore in the course of this thesis are: The Hospital at the Time of the Revolution; Schreber’s Nervous Illness and The Judge’s Wife, an unperformed stage play, a radio play and a television play respectively. These works are worthy of exploration because of their experiments with the politics of subjectivity as it impacts on race, gender and social class, and notions of ‘legitimacy’ that shift with a person’s changing circumstances. Each of these plays implicitly demonstrates the importance of subjectivity in relation to representational power as it places characters who have traditionally been silenced at the centre of the action. I have titled my thesis Caryl Churchill: Representational Negotiations and Provisional Truths. In invoking this title I pre-empt the engagement of a subjective, strategic essentialist approach, both in critiquing this period of Churchill’s work and in declaring the assumptions of the arguments contained in the pages that follow.

Harfoush, Cale Joseph. "Descartes and the creation of the eternal truths." Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4423.

Full text
Abstract:
Descartes' philosophy concerning the relationship between God and the eternal truths has been an unresolved and problematic issue since he first declared it. For Descartes, God's power is limitless and nothing can exist independently of Him. The problem is that if that is true, things such as "God knows that he does not exist" are possible because the truth of that proposition rests on God's power. In fact, the existence of any eternal truth depends on God’s power. Examples of such truths are: "the interior angles of a triangle are equal to two right angles," "3+4=7," and "two contraries cannot exist together." Descartes built his entire metaphysics around a certain conception of God, a conception that includes His not being a deceiver. But if it turns out that God is as limitless as Descartes thinks He is, Descartes' philosophy does not rest on as firm a foundation as he believes. In fact, it is inconsistent: we know what we clearly and distinctly perceive because God would not deceive us and his power is unlimited. But since His power is absolutely unlimited, it might be the case that God is not a deceiver and everything we know is true, but at the same time we have been misled by God and there is an actual reality we are not, and will never be, privy to. There have been a number of attempts to make Descartes’ view consistent. I consider two of the most recent and promising lines of interpretation. The first, Universal Possibilism, holds that God’s power is utterly limitless and He can make any proposition true, including problematic ones such as “I think, but I am not.” This theory argues that what we can and cannot conceive are merely epistemic limits rather than indicators of truth. The second, Limited Possibilism, maintains that God has power over the possibility of any proposition. Any proposition, under this view, is possibly possible; this preserves the integrity of the connection between what we conceive as true and what is actually true. The major drawback to this line of thought is that it puts an unintuitive limit on God: He can make something possible, but he can’t then do the seemingly simple task of making that thing true. I argue that a proper understanding of Descartes' conception of the meanings of "possible," "impossible," "contingent,". "necessary" and God's nature renders his position consistent. Descartes holds that God necessarily exists, and his nature is immutable and the existence of anything else is contingent. If one interprets Descartes' God to hold limitless power over contingent propositions, but not over his nature or existence, Descartes' position is no longer inconsistent.

Abstract:
In this study, the sea trout (Salmo trutta) spawning migration was studied in the river Själsöån, Gotland, to assess the main external factors determining upstream migration and seasonal changes in fish parameters. Additionally population trends were studied by examination of old data. The most important external factors for upstream migration were the air pressure, air temperature and wind direction. No significant difference was found between when males and females migrated upstream. Larger females in better condition started migration earlier than the smaller females in poorer condition. Later arriving females stayed in the stream for a shorter period. Regarding changes over time, the results showed that the variation between years in number of spawners, female size and condition, and sex ratio was high but with no trends. The population appears to be stable.

Riaz, Amber. "How do we know particular moral truths?" Thesis, University of Oxford, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.550572.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns a posteriori knowledge of particular, contingent moral propositions (particular moral knowledge). It assumes that moral scepticism is false. Chapter One explains and motivates this assumption. On an inferentialist moral epistemology, particular moral knowledge is acquired by inference from other known moral principles and non-moral facts. On another inferentialist moral epistemology, particular moral knowledge is the result of inference to the best explanation of our moral observations. Chapter Two argues against both these views. In the last two chapters, I argue that there is some non-inferential particular moral knowledge. In Chapter Three, I argue that we have some moral knowledge by perceiving moral facts, such as the fact that those boys are being cruel to that cat, and this knowledge does not inferentially rest on non-moral evidence in any way distinctive to its moral content. On some theories of perception, perception is a rich source of non- inferential a posteriori knowledge of particular, contingent facts about the external world. Given such theories, I argue, we have some particular moral knowledge by perception. On some other theories, perception is still a rich source of a posteriori knowledge of particular, contingent facts about the external world but most such knowledge is inferential. Given theories of the latter sort, I argue, we have some particular moral knowledge by perception which is not inferential in any way distinctive to its moral content, but is inferential only in any way generic to most perceptual knowledge of the external world. In Chapter Four I argue that we have non-inferential knowledge of some moral facts, such as that Hitler was evil, by testimony. On some theories of testimony, it is a rich source of non-inferential a posteriori knowledge. On these theories, I argue, we have some non- inferential particular moral knowledge by testimony. On other theories of testimony, it is a rich source only of inferential a posteriori knowledge. On theories of the latter sort, I argue, we have some particular moral knowledge by testimony that is not inferential in any way distinctive to its moral content, but is inferential only in any way generic to most knowledge by testimony.

Abstract:
By the documenting and examining things that are often overlooked in everyday life, I try to find the beauty of these objects, of people, their lives and their homes. I am interested in the current technology and the influence of the easily transmitted image. What is the truth and reality of the images shared by the current youth culture because of the use of camera phones, digital image takers, and the constant image transmissions through online social networking venues such as My Space and FaceBook? The current digital image is no longer a precious object as it was in the past. The easy accessibility of technology and the growing popularity of an affordable camera have made these images a common object, easily replaced. It is my interest or concern with this technology that led me to my final body of work, images of this youth culture.

Journey Health is an industry leader in medical testing, touching a large portion of Americans each year. To maintain this position, the company makes strategic investments in R&D, business development, and continuous operations improvement. The company faces dual challenges in resource allocation nationwide due to high rates of turnover among first-year employees, specifically in Specimen Processing, as well as electric utility bills that, across the company, cost tens of millions of dollars per year and continue to increase as business grows. Each turn of an employee costs an estimated $7,500, accounting for recruiting, training, and productivity losses. The aim of this research is twofold: 1) to examine the causes of employee turnover and leverage the Good Jobs Strategy to develop a solution and 2) to examine the viability of on-site solar generation as a means of cost improvements and other ancillary benefits including the safety and convenience of covered parking. Nationwide first-year turnover among Specimen Processing Technicians (SPTs) at Journey laboratories averages 50%. Primary reasons for employee attrition included lack of engagement and competing opportunities. The Good Jobs Strategy is a combination of investment in people with four operational choices that leverage that investment by increasing productivity, contribution and motivation of employees and by driving continuous improvement. These choices are: standardize and empower, cross-train, operate with slack, and focus and simplify. I conducted phone interviews and in-person observations with ten Journey locations. Within the framework of the Good Jobs Strategy, I developed a set of recommendations that includes clearly defining job descriptions, increasing opportunities for employees to build rewarding careers, empowering employees to feel engaged and motivated on the job, and aligning interests across both Specimen Management and Logistics in frontline operations. I also find that the current state of knowledge-sharing across Journey locations can be improved, and that changes to management perceptions of frontline employees is critical for the Good Jobs Strategy to succeed in the long-term. As an additional initiative, I evaluated the potential for on-site solar generation to be a value-added opportunity at Journey in Westborough, Massachusetts. I estimated that solar production can offset approximately 40-50% of utility consumption and find broad support among employees due to the benefits of having covered parking where the solar panels are installed in the form of carport solar, elevated panels above the parking lots I also estimate that the project has a net present value (NPV) up to $4.9M in Westborough with the internal rate of return (IRR) up to of 12%. I conducted a sensitivity analysis on the input parameters and found a significant influence of precipitation on system output, with less influence by variation in vegetation height and performance of the solar modules themselves. I find that NPV and IRR may vary significantly, from $3.5-$8.0M and 6% to 19%, depending on installation costs and system output. Critically, I find that a regulatory framework is necessary to require utilities to allow grid connections from distributed solar generation. Also, I find non-technical and nonfinancial factors that drive decision-making, including willingness to make capital investments, leased-versus-owned status of property, and familiarity with solar electricity and utility markets. I found that a clear reframing the discussion in terms more understandable to the client is particularly useful, such as considering the project separate from solar energy, but more as constructing covered parking for employees, yet being paid to do so. I conclude that on-site solar generation has significant financial benefits for Journey. Although the estimated payback period of four to ten years is longer than Journey's typical capital investment payback, solar offers a low-risk form of investment. Alternate installation models may be investigated, including a leased model, which would require no upfront capital investment by Journey.

Leitwein, Maeva. Thesis, Montpellier, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MONTT070/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The brown trout Salmo trutta L. is the most widely distributed salmonid species in Europe. The species presents a high level of phenotypic diversity linked to its complex evolutionary history. An Atlantic hatchery lineage, which has been domesticated for decades, and more recently a domesticated Mediterranean strain, have been largely used for restocking and enhancement of wild Mediterranean populations in southern France, especially for recreational fishing. The impact of restocking practices on brown trout genetic diversity and population genetic structure has been extensively studied with allozyme and microsatellite markers. However, the small number of genetic markers used in these studies did not allow to get a genome-wide representation of introgression. The aim of this thesis was to assess the genome-wide impact of repeated introductions of Atlantic and Mediterranean domesticated strains into wild Mediterranean populations. First, a large number of SNP markers have been developed as well as a high density genetic map for S. trutta. Secondly, the molecular tools previously developed have been used to detect introgressed haplotypes and to provide a detailed picture of introgression frequency patterns across the genome of three wild populations from the Orb drainage. The length distribution of admixture tracts was used to determine the timing of introgression, taking variation in local recombination rate into account. Finally, this study focused on the positive or negative selective forces that modulate the genome-wide landscape of introgression. Our results suggest that the consequences of hybridization on individual fitness have to be considered separately over short and long timescales. This work shows that understanding the evolutionary consequences of stocking practices is of major interest for the conservation and management of natural populations

Abstract:
The theoretical framework of this study is intended to explore the potential Alain Badiou's theory of event, truth, and faithful subject may provide for understanding literature. This study applies this framework to John Ruskin's late and lesser-known work Fors Clavigera: Letters to the Workmen and Labourers of Great Britain (1871-1884). Both Ruskin's fragmented style in Fors Clavigera and his notion of historical truth developed therein have been read as madness and as reactionary romanticism. I examine key metanarrative moments in Fors Clavigera where Ruskin reflects on his historiographical choices and methods. Through my analysis, I show how Badiou's theory provides a way of better understanding Ruskin's historiography as deliberately purposeful and philosophically engaging.

Norton, Patricia Jean. "Teacher learning : a process of grafting new truths on to old truths : a case study of teacher learning in an independent school." Queensland University of Technology, 2006. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16332/.

Abstract:
The intent of this professional doctorate study was to clarify theory and develop knowledge that could benefit the researcher's workplace. It achieved two aims. The first was the useful knowledge gained by the insider-researcher about how to effect teacher learning in a reform context. The second was the improved understanding of the uniqueness of contextual conditions that affected teacher learning in one school. A case study of a single school site was the means of examining the problem of what issues confronted teachers in learning new knowledge mandated by curriculum reform, along with why those issues existed and how teachers dealt with them. A genealogical approach to the literature investigation determined where, why and how teacher learning should be effected in a learning community, in what reflected an "outside in" approach to the problem. However, the intent of the study was that this should be balanced by the "inside out" approach evident in the consideration of what teachers in a school had to say about the realities of teacher learning. Interviews with teachers considered good informants resulted in quality data that facilitated the construction of explanatory theory. A comparison of this theory constructed from data grounded in the realities of teachers' experiences with the theory derived from the literature constituted the final stage of clarifying the problem. Results from the study, therefore, represented both useful knowledge and understanding of the problem. These were of benefit to the specific school, while contributing to the professional efficacy of the researcher-insider, responsible for delivering curriculum reform that was dependent on teacher learning.

Abstract:
Hydropower plants, with dams and turbines, form obstacles to smolts migrating downstream. The purpose of this study was to investigate turbine-induced mortality of brown trout (Salmo trutta) smolts at two power plants, guidance efficiency of existing diverters and whether the effect was enhanced by reducing light levels at the turbine intake by covering the power plant channel with an opaque tarpaulin. Furthermore, the aim was to investigate whether there was a relationship between smolt status and the smolts’ ability to move towards the sea. In the River Emån in Småland 46 trout smolts were caught, radio-tagged, released at two power plants and tracked daily for six weeks. There was a higher mortality at the upper power plant than at the lower one. The diverter at the lower power plant had a statistically significant guiding effect, but the diverter at the upper power plant did not. All of the smolts that chose passage through the trash gate did so when the power channel was covered with tarpaulin (i.e. light levels were greatly reduced). There was no evidence that smolt status or release date would affect passage times at the upper station, nor did smolt status affect swimming speeds downstream of the two power stations.

Abstract:
The classic view of trout (Salmo trutta) life history is that trout begins its life in freshwater, migrates to the ocean after about 1-4 years and then returns to freshwater to spawn. As trout fry have been caught at the mouth of the River Emån, near the Baltic Sea, researchers have speculated that some trout emigrate during their first year of life. The purpose of this study was to describe the variation in the length of time trout reside in freshwater before they migrate to the ocean for the first time. Another purpose was to investigate whether it was possible to discern where and how long the fish spent in freshwater and saltwater during different parts of their lives. Between 2007 and 2009, 23 adult trout were captured in the River Emån in southeastern Sweden. From each fish, a microchemical analysis of the sagitta otolith was conducted. The analysis focused on measuring the ratio of strontium:calcium from the center of the otolith to its outer edge at 6μm intervals. Based on this analysis, I found that 26% of the trout in the population emigrated to sea before they had reached the age of one. The largest proportion (48%) of trout emigrated between 1 to 2 years of age. The results of my study indicated that there was a significant correlation between age and the number of times that the fish remained in freshwater. I also analyzed the ratio of zinc:calcium and manganese:calcium. The analysis of zinc showed annual fluctuations, including a high value during the fish's first year and a seasonal pattern, with higher values of Zn:Ca in spring and summer. My results also showed some variation of the trace element manganese, half of the fish showed a peak in their first year. The results of this study indicate that by analyzing the concentrations of trace elements in otoliths one can describe individual variation in brown trout movement patterns and life history.

Abstract:
The Scottish brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) is identified as an important resource which requires responsible and continual management. This study was divided into two parts; an electrophoretic survey of wild trout populations in Scotland, and a quantitative assessment of the genetic component to growth rate in various stocks, grown under hatchery and farm conditions. Sixty wild populations were sampled by various methods. All fish were typed using brain, eye, heart, liver and muscle tissue and starch gel electrophoresis for thirty four enzyme loci, thirteen of which were found to be polymorphic. Gene diversity analysis was conducted on the data collected, 33% of the diversity being attributed to differences between populations, much of the variation was thought to be due to founder effects. Evidence is presented to support a hypothesis that the trout in Scotland are derived from two main post glacial invasion stocks. Future management strategies for wild stocks of Scottish brown trout are discussed. Growth trials were conducted at Howietoun fish farm in order to calculate heritability estimates for growth rate. Hierarchical and factoral crossing schemes were employed, using broodstock from three stocks. Heritability estimates for growth rate were found to be high and it was concluded, significant genetic gains could be achieved if growth rate was the only trait of commercial interest and truncated mass selection was adopted. Attempts were made to investigate the relationship between heterozygosity and growth rate in the hatchery populations. It was concluded that more data were required to make a meaningful assessment, but from this study little evidence exists for a positive correlation between heterozygosity and growth rate. Correlations between early life cycle stages and subsequent growth are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis has the objective of investigating the social construction of sex education in a public school with a Nucleus of Adolescent Multipliers (NAM). An ethnographic research was developed in a school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between August, 2002, and June, 2003. During this period, NAM`s meetings, classes of various subjects, and, specially, the classes of Sciences were observed, as well as meetings, breaks, and other activities. Students and teachers were interviewed. The current intense debate about the sexuality of adolescents is caused by the fact that sexuality is an important focus of political investment and of governance technology, and, the school reveals itself as a privileged space for the development of biopower. This thesis demonstrates in what ways education is imbricated in this problematic and how it relates to other areas of knowledge, as biology, medicine, demography and psychology, in order to manage the adolescent sexuality. Sex education has been taught at schools mainly by Science teachers based on the theme of human reproduction, and, in some schools, in the framework of NAM. The school offers the students a knowledge that pretends to be scientific, and, therefore, true about sexuality, which is used by them as a criterion of truth to judge their previous knowledge about this theme. In this perspective, the human body is conceived as an organism and each organ is studied having as main focus its reproduction function. Thus, the woman`s body receives greater emphasis than the man`s body. Contradictorily, when sex education is developed on the basis of the reproduction theme, precisely this ends up being emphasized, in spite the fact that it is exactly its occurrence among adolescents that the various educational policies intend to avoid. The school interventions try to develop among adolescents a sense of responsibility around the sexual relations, aiming to change or to adequate the mechanisms that structure patterns of preventive behavior. With this objective, the school, besides fostering the use of preservatives for the practice of safe sex, ends up recommending a specific model of relationship, in which sex relations should occur. In a similar way, pregnancy appears as an inadequate experience for this period of life.

Hurley, Ursula Kate. "Truths and their telling : a novel with complementary discourses." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/17620/.

Full text
Abstract:
Comprising a novel and complementary discourses, this thesis blurs the traditional distinctions between critical theory and creative practice, and contributes new insights into the practice, craft, and theory of the contemporary novel. It stages a praxical enquiry in which the creative texts perform a triple function: as original literature, as documents of process, and as critical enquiry. In so doing the texts add to our understanding of how life history and gender influence literary production, and delineate the nexus of fiction/biography/autobiography, both in terms of the individual writer negotiating the matrix of self and other, and in terms of the author in a wider social and historical context. The main apparatus for this investigation is a work of prose fiction that exploits the ability of the novel to sustain a critical exploration while simultaneously delivering a satisfying narrative. It is a composite text that, I will argue, works as historiographic metafiction to dramatise key events in the apparently disparate lives of three women who are separated by historical and social context. The relationship between the three women becomes visible as the narratives gradually reveal their connections. Via this structure, layers of resonance accrue as the themes outlined above are worked through in this fictional space. Alongside the novel, complementary discourses present the poetics that have been developed in its production. They examine the critical and historical context of my work, articulating insights gained into the novelist’s craft, the nature and purpose of the writer's tool kit, and its relationship with the author's life history. The complementary discourses conclude by offering responses to questions about the interactions between gender, genre and creative processes, before proposing future lines of enquiry into the nature and possibilities of the novel.

Pollock, William J. "The epistemology of necessity." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4053.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the direct reference theory of proper names and natural kind terms as expounded by Saul Kripke, Hilary Putnam and others and finds that it has not succeeded in replacing some kind of description theory of the reference of such terms - although it does concede that the traditional Fregean theory is not quite correct. It is argued that the direct reference theory is mistaken on several counts. First of all it is question-begging. Secondly, it is guilty of a 'use/mention' confusion. And thirdly, and most importantly, it fails to deal with the notion of understanding. The notion of understanding is crucial to the present thesis - specifically, what is understood by a proper name or natural kind term. It is concluded that sense (expressed in the form of descriptions) is at least necessary for reference, which makes a significant difference to Kripke's claim that there are necessary a posteriori truths as well as contingent a priori truths. It is also argued that sense could be sufficient for reference, if it is accepted that it is speakers who effect reference. In this sense, sense determines reference. The thesis therefore not only argues against the account of reference given by the direct reference theorists, it also gives an account of how proper names and natural kind terms actually do function in natural language. As far as the epistemology of necessity is concerned the thesis concludes that Kripke (along with many others) has not succeeded in establishing the existence of the necessary a posteriori nor the contingent a priori from the theory of direct reference. Whether such truths can be established by some other means, or in principle, is not the concern of the thesis; although the point is made that, if a certain view of sense is accepted, then questions of necessity and a priority seem inappropriate.

Abstract:
Little is known about the behavior of juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) during winter in boreal streams. Harsh winter conditions presumably affect overwinter survival negatively in small streams, where ice may have a large effect on survival of young salmonids. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of over-head ice cover on the spatial positioning of small brown trout in a boreal stream. I hypothesized that during the day brown trout will use the middle of the stream to a greater extent in the presence of over-head ice cover than in its absence. In the absence of ice cover, trout were predicted to hold station near the shore. At night, I hypothesized that there will be little effect of ice cover on the spatial positioning of the trout, with trout expected to occupy the entire stream width. Analysis of the results for the entire study period revealed a strong positive correlation between the tendency to be positioned towards the middle of the stream during daytime and the presence of ice cover. An analysis based on the period when water temperature was around 0o C (< 0,3o C) showed that trout used the entire width of the stream in the presence of surface ice but were restricted to the margins in the absence of ice. My hypothesis regarding the spatial distribution of trout at night was not supported by the data, as there was no difference in their spatial distribution during the day and at night.

Abstract:
The potential for naturally occurring element concentrations and stable isotope ratios to provide biogeochemical tags of Sa/mo fruita, an andromous salmonid, was examined. Statistically significant differences were found in the concentrations of Li,Mg, Mn, Sr, Ba and Pb in the hydroxyapatite freshwater growth bands of wild Sa/mo fnltta scales collected from 12 catchments draining into the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea. However, only 50% of the fish studied could be correctly classified to their catchment of origin based on element concentrations in scales. The degree to which element concentrations in sea trout scales could be used as a stock discrimination tool offish in the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea is probably limited. Sr, Mn, Ba and Mg in recently deposited scale hydroxyapatite and otolith aragonite allowed the classification of Sa/mo tnltta to site of origin (n=6) in the Dee river catchment in Wales, U.K., to be determined with 86% and 89% classification accuracy respectively. There appeared to be regional patterning in scale and otolith chemistry in the upper, middle and lower regions of the catchment. Scales might offer a non-lethal biogeochemical tag, comparable in performance to otoliths, but further work needs to examine the degree of post-depositional change in scale hydroxyapatite. Concentrations of Sr and Mn in scales were correlated with concentrations in stream water, providing a unique opportunity to map high resolution catchment-wide variability in scale element concentrations using British Geological Survey (BGS)stream water chemistry data as a proxy for Sr and Mn in scales, at 792 sites in the Dee catchment (neighbouring sites were > 41m apart). The regional patterning in Sr and Mn in scales among sites (n=12) in 3rd order tributaries in the upper, middle and lower regions of the catchment were not present in predicted scale chemistries at sites in 1 st and 2nd order tributaries (n=792). Some geographically isolated sites in the Dee catchment might be expected to show similar concentrations of Sr and Mn in scales suggesting that the technique is unlikely to be a useful fisheries research tool in the Dee catchment. The performance of olsN, 013C and oD in scales and concentrations of Sr, Mn, Ba and Mg in scales and otoliths of Sa/mo tnllta as biogeochemical tags of fish at sites (n=6) in the Dee catchment were compared. No significant differences in oD in scales were detected among the 6 study sites. However, significant differences were detected in Ol~ and OBC among sites. The olsN and OBC values allowed fish to be classified to their site of origin with 93% accuracy. This classification was superior to that achieved when using Sr, Mn, Ba and Mg in the hydroxyapatite of scales from the same fish (which achieved a classification accuracy of 88%). olsN and 013C could provide biogeochemical tags of Salmo fruita but further work needs to examine the degree of spatial variability in 01SN and OBC in Salmo fruita scales in the Dee catchment.

Abstract:
For Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta), the decision to migrate or when to migrate is believed to be influenced by the individual’s metabolic rate (MR) relative its food intake. As MR was expected to be related to behaviour, the potential links between behaviour and metabolic costs was studied. For both salmon and trout the dominant individual had a higher standard metabolic rate (SMR) than its subordinate counterpart. Also, successful migrants of brown trout had a higher SMR than unsuccessful migrants, whereas no such difference was found for obligate migratory Atlantic salmon. Measures of variation in MR and boldness indicated that Atlantic salmon was more sensitive to stress than brown trout and became passive when stressed. When two trout were interacting, an increase in ventilation rate (VR) was positively correlated to fighting intensity. The first day after an interaction, VR did not differ between small dominant and subordinate trout (mean size 3.7g), whereas for large trout (26.0g) subordinates had higher VR than dominants. However, a combination of low temperature (10°C) and high water velocity (22cm/s) eliminated this difference. This probably reflects the high swimming activity of small dominants and the low motivation for dominants to defend a large territory when temperatures were low and the cost of moving was high. These results show that the relationship between MR and behaviour may differ depending on species, fish size and environmental factors.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The effects on the diet of brown trout (Salmo trutta) of a clear cutting of the riparian vegetation has been investigated in a field-experiment, where two of the potential effects of a clear cut were simulated. The focus was placed on the two factors increased light and input of terrestrial invertebrates. The increase of ligth was manipulated by placing fluorescent lights over the brook and the input of terrestrial invertebrates was manipulated by placing plastic tents over the brook. Issues discussed are the percentage terrestrial food in the different treatments and at the different times of sampling, differences in the percentage terrestrial food between older and younger individuals of brown trout, differences in the amount of aquatic food in the light-treatment and a taxonomic summary of the composition of the diet. There were significant differences between the the different treatments, where the individuals in the control treatment ate significantly more terrestrial food as compared to the individuals in the tent and in the combined light and tent treatment. There was also a significant difference between the different times of sampling, more terrestrial food was consumed later in the season. No sigificant differences were detected between older and younger individuals concerning the percentage of terrestrial food eaten, nor between the different treatments concearning the amount of aquatic food consumed. The aquatic food showed a wider variation and was more diverse as compared to the terrestrial food, and earthworms (Lumbriculidae) was a very common food item.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to identify the motivating factors driving consumers home purchase decisions from the consumer's point of view. Although there is an abundance of past real estate research, dating back as far as the 1920's, the factors shaping consumers home choice have not been fully explored. Past research has tended to assume that homebuyers arrive at a decision following a logical and rational decision making process. These studies have also tended to focus on utilitarian or economic factors shaping home choice. Although past research has unquestionably added to the understanding of home purchase behaviour, the focus on utilitarian and economic factors does not explain decisions that are underpinned by deep-seated motives. The present thesis extends past research by exploring the less tangible, non-economic aspects of home choice in order to provide a fuller story of why and how people consume homes. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the unsolicited motives underlying consumers' home choices, therefore, a qualitative technique known as ZMET was employed. Based on the notion of unconscious thoughts, ZMET uses visual images gathered and/or generated by consumers to elicit and probe the metaphors that represent their thoughts and feelings. For the present study, 14 consumers who had recently placed an offer on a home took part in the ZMET interview. The present methodology extends past property research which has predominantly taken a quantitative approach. The findings of the study provide a rich insight into the motivations behind consumer home choice. Firstly, it reveals that the pre-purchase checklists used by many homebuyers and real estate agents are inaccurate representation of consumer home choice, and explains why this is so. Secondly, it demonstrates the influence of twenty four motives, including three central constructs (space, nature and views) on consumer home choice and highlights the fact that autobiographical memories underpins many of the motives to impact on choice. Thirdly, it provides a model mapping out the interaction between utilitarian and hedonic motives, which evokes a network of feelings, sensations and emotions that shape consumer home choice. In doing so, the research provides theoretical insight into the link between the rational information-processing model and the experiential view of hedonic consumption in home purchases. This study has shown that a specific set of utilitarian and deep-seated hedonic factors interrelate to culminate upon one's home choice. The findings in this study maintain that while utilitarian factors are significant determinants of home choice, in themselves, they do not always tell the whole story. This new knowledge of how and why homebuyers chose what they did is valuable to practitioners in predicting accurate property demands and value. Real estate agents can-sell more effectively by matching a property to a homebuyer's hedonic needs. The information in this study also helps homebuyers understand that their home choice is guided by internal images and deep-seated motives derived from many years of past experience but more importantly, they can decide if these motives justify the price they pay for the property. Finally, the model gives future researchers a new framework to access meanings necessary for understanding homebuyer choice and allows a closer examination of the mechanics of these influences on the housing market and its demands.
