Abstract:
AbstractFruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are a species-rich and economically important group. The phylogenetic relationships among the many taxa are still to be fully resolved and the monophyly of several groups is still to be confirmed. This paper reports a study of the phylogenetic relationships among 23 economically important tephritid species (representing several major lineages of the family) which examines the sequence of a region of mitochondrial DNA encompassing the cytb, tRNASer and ND1 genes. Substitutions characteristic of particular taxa were found that could help classify member

Abstract:
The type species of the genus Acidiella Hendel is A. longipennis Hendel, which is known as a widely distributed species in South East Asia. Specimens of A. longipennis are rarely found in insect collections, but I was able to examine a number of Myanmar specimens collected by R. Malaise during the Swedish Expedition in 1934, and reported as A. longipennis by M. Hering in 1938. As a result, three related species were sorted out from these specimens. They look very much alike except for the dorsal abdominal patterns (difficult to see in dried specimens) and postabdominal structures. I here provi

Abstract:
The ‘type’ of the fly species ‘Trypeta’ cylindrica Walker, 1853, from the William Saunders Collection, was misidentified and subsequently placed in the genus Chyliza Fallén (Psilidae). A specimen from the same collection with identical label data but belonging to Coelopacidia Enderlein (Tephritidae) is hereby identified as the correct holotype and the species should therefore be referred to as Coelopacidia cylindrica (Walker, 1853). Chyliza pallidipes Lamb, 1917 stat. rev. is taken out of synonymy and regarded as the valid name for the species previously treated as ‘Chyliza cylindrica’.

Abstract:
Fruit flies, in the family Tephritidae, are major pests of horticultural crops and of quarantine concern in India and globally due to their concealed feeding habits and invasive nature. In India, most problematic species belong to the genera Bactrocera, Dacus, and Zeugodacus within the subfamily Dacinae, and Carpomya within the subfamily Trypetinae. The economic impact of these pests extends beyond yield losses and increased management costs. They can also lead to the loss of export markets and increased expenses for the construction and maintenance of fruit treatment and management facilities
