Abstract:
AbstractThis paper considers the abolition of the mui tsai (young female bondservants) as it unfolded in British Malaya, and challenges the overemphasis on Hong Kong as the primary focus of mui tsai scholarship. While the mui tsai system was defended as a time-honoured Chinese tradition, this paper uses new material to show that trans-racial considerations figured prominently in mui tsai abolition in Malaya, particularly in helping to recast it as a wider problem of child welfare. It is argued that this neglected aspect of mui tsai abolition only comes clearly to light in the Malayan case; for only in the intensely multi-racial conditions of peninsular Malaya could the question be asked: ‘Do you own non-Chinese mui tsai?’

Abstract:
The clinical and functional results of 46 patients who underwent zone II flexor tendon repair using the Lim/Tsai technique combined with the Kleinert/Duran early active mobilisation regime and place and hold exercises were assessed. The results were compared with 25 patients who were treated by the modified Kessler technique and the Kleinert/Duran regime alone. After a follow-up of 8 to 17 weeks, the Lim/Tsai group had a better grip strength and a significantly better total active motion of 141° compared with 123°. The rupture rates (Lim/Tsai: 1/51; Kessler: 3/26) and the extension deficits were not statistically different in the two groups. However, the complication rate was significantly lower and the average time of treatment was significantly shorter in the Lim/Tsai group. These results support the use of the Lim/Tsai six-strand repair technique in zone II flexor tendon injuries and early active mobilisation without rubber-band traction.

Abstract:
Background: The single looped suture modified Lim/Tsai technique is widely used for flexor tendon repairs. It has been shown to possess better biomechanical properties and require less repair time per tendon as compared to the double looped suture original Lim/Tsai technique. However, there is no clinical data on the modified technique. Methods: The retrospective study included zone 2 flexor tendon repairs made using the modified Lim/Tsai technique from January 2008 to December 2014. Clinical outcome was assessed using the revised Strickland and Glogovac criteria, which categorises repairs based on the total active motion of the repaired digit. Results: Sixty-two patients with 74 digits were included. The overall mean total active motion was 122°. The overall satisfactory outcome of the modified Lim/Tsai technique was 81.1%. The rupture rate of the modified Lim/Tsai technique was 2.7%. Using multivariate linear regression model, we found that outcomes were negatively influenced by subzone 2C and crush/saw injuries, but not by concomitant neurovascular injuries or post-operative follow-up duration. Conclusions: Based on this retrospective study of patients with zone 2 flexor tendon injuries, the clinical outcomes of modified and original Lim/Tsai techniques are comparable. As such, there is no clinical evidence favouring one over the other.

Taiwanese President Tsai adopted a least provocative China policy. Negatively impacted social groups in Taiwan organised large scale protests against Tsai administration’s reforms. The main opposition party Kuomintang has been beset by an unpopular pro-China leader, open internal conflicts, lack of financial sources and low popularity. The Chinese government has frozen all official connections with Taiwan at the central level and blocked Taiwan’s participation in some international conferences. The Tsai-Trump phone conversation signals unstable Taiwan-China-US triangle relations in 2017.

Abstract:
As the first female president in Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen’s actions and words are crucial to the advancement of gender equality within the Chinese patriarchal society. Likewise, the media also have a role in shaping gender discourse which may or may not support the president’s attempt at empowering women in politics and other sectors of life. This paper examined the linguistic strategy used by President Tsai to represent herself as a strong female leader through her official statements and how the media represented her in their reports. The data were collected from local news reports and international news portals, and from her speeches as quoted by the media, starting from the year she was elected in 2016 to 2018. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, it was apparent that President Tsai struggled with her role as a female leader in politics, with critics from persisting patriarchal society and pressure from emerging new values in Taiwan. The media, on the other hand, was divided in making representations for and against Tsai. The conclusion of this research is hoped to give a general description of gender and political dynamics under the new era of Tsai Ing-wen.

Abstract:
Social sciences researchers commend the scientists in the field of natural science for their history of replication and reproduction of scientific research. Such advocates for replication warn that business research is frequently built on a foundation that is ever evolving and necessitates the replicating of theoretical work. Following this logic, this paper is a replication of the celebrated 1998 article by Tsai and Ghoshal, Social capital and value creation: The role of intrafirm networks. Replication was conducted utilizing Structural Equation Modeling. The data was collected by the original researchers through a survey administered by mail. The survey comprised questions rated using a Likert scale. Findings mostly support Tsai and Ghoshal’s results with the exception of the relationships among constructs measuring trustworthiness, resource combination and sharing, and product innovation. Utilizing the before-mentioned constructs and the same analysis as Tsai and Ghoshal--structural equation modeling (SEM); the replicated model presented in this paper shows a non-recursive relationship versus Tsai and Ghoshal’s recursive model. All in all, we contend that the replicated model presented in this paper agrees with current literature and is a more comprehensive model than the one offered by Tsai and Ghoshal.

Abstract:
We compared the Lim/Tsai tendon repair technique using an extra-tendinous knot with modification using an intra-tendinous knot. The ultimate tensile strength, load to 2 mm gap force, stiffness, mode of failure, location of failure, and time taken to repair each tendon were recorded during a single cycle loading test in 20 tendons with each repair method. We found that the ultimate tensile strength and 2 mm gap force of the modified Lim/Tsai repair with an extra-tendinous knot (56 SD 5 N and 14 SD 2 N, respectively) were statistically significantly higher than that of the modified Lim/Tsai repair with intra-tendinous knot (51 SD 7 N and 11 SD 2 N, respectively). We conclude that the modified Lim/Tsai repair with extra-tendinous knot is stronger, despite having the same number of core strands.

Abstract:
Three Gram-stain-positive strains were isolated from fermented mustard and were rod-shaped, non-motile, asporogenous, facultatively anaerobic, homofermentative and did not exhibit catalase activity. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strains were members of the genus Lactobacillus. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the type strains of Lactobacillus crustorum (98.7 % similarity), Lactobacillus farciminis (98.9 %) and Lactobacillus mindensis (97.9 %) were the closest neighbours. However, DNA–DNA reassociation values with these strains were less than 50 %. Phenotypic and genotypic features demonstrated that these isolates represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus futsaii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is YM 0097T ( = JCM 17355T = BCRC 80278T).

Abstract:
This paper discusses the relationship between Eco Museum and rural revitalization. This study explores the possibility of combining the Eco Museum concept with rural revitalization to find a way out for the village's future development. From the perspective of the components of an Eco Museum, this study selects Yim Tin Tsai in Hong Kong as the research object to elaborate and evaluate the application of the Eco Museum concept in the restoration project of Yim Tin Tsai in order to provide a reference for the practice of the Eco Museum concept in China. The study concludes that the local residents of Yim Tin Tsai have been given autonomy to preserve their own local nature and cultural resources in situ. On the basis of this, Yim Tin Tsai has been able to develop sustainably and generate economic benefits for local residents. This study illustrates that it is feasible to realize rural revitalization while practicing the concept of Eco Museum.

Zootaxa 4658, no. 1 (August 21, 2019): 101–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.4658.1.4.

Abstract:
This study describes two new species of earthworms belonging to the genus Amynthas (Oligochaeta: Megascolecidae) from central Taiwan. They are named Amynthas luridus sp. nov. and Amynthas ruiyenensis sp. nov. Both species are octothecal with the former found at elevations of 1500–2300 m and the latter at an elevation of 2200 m from the Central Mountain Range. In addition, DNA barcodes are made available for the first time for the following species: Amynthas catenus Tsai et al., 2001, Amynthas exiguus aquilonius Tsai et al., 2001, Amynthas proasacceus Tsai et al., 2001, Amynthas hohuanmontis Tsai et al., 2002, Amynthas tessellatus Shen et al., 2002, Amynthas fenestrus Shen et al., 2003, Amynthas tantulus Shen et al., 2003, and Amynthas uvaglandularis Shen et al., 2003. Furthermore, Amynthas exiguus ssp. aquilonius Tsai et al., 2001 distributed at elevations of 2200–3000 m in the Central Mountain Range is elevated to species level, as A. aquilonius Tsai et al., 2001. The highest altitude record so far for the exotic Eukerria saltensis (Beddard, 1895) in Taiwan, 2200 m above sea level, is documented. Moreover, some recent assignments of species to Amynthas and Metaphire and synonymies of names are critically discussed. It is argued that idiosyncratic genus concepts, inadequate species comparisons, and unexplained synonymies should be avoided. A hitherto undetected and possibly monophyletic species group of mainly Korean Amynthas species in the A. tokioensis-group is indicated, characterized by numerous genital papillae around each spermathecal pore and male porophore, large ampullae, long diverticula, large prostate glands, and manicate intestinal caeca. The names A. bimaculata, A. silvatica and A. surcata (Ishizuka, 1999), as well as A. odaesanensis, A. righii, A. fasciiformis, and A. sanchongensis Hong & James, 2001, previously declared as junior synonyms of A. tappensis (Ohfuchi, 1935), are revalidated.

Abstract:
Various Tsai-type quasicrystals and crystalline approximants have been found in a variety of systems. These compounds are made of Tsai-type icosahedral clusters. Recently, the existence of long-range magnetic orders was reported in Cd6R and Au-SM-R approximants[1,2]. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the magnetic properties of new alloys systems which are also composed of Tsai-type clusters. In the present work, in order to search new Tsai-type quasicrystals as well as approximants, we have investigated the phase constitution and phase stability in the Au-In-R(R=rare-earth) systems. In this research, alloys of various compositions were prepared by arc melting and were subsequently annealed under various conditions. The phase constitution and phase stability were investigated by X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. As a result, we have observed the formation of 1/1 approximants in the Au-In-R systems and found that they are stable up to high temperatures of ~1000K. The formation condition and stability of icosahedral quasicrytals will be also reported in the presentation.

Abstract:
President Tsai Ing-wen has been plagued by controversial domestic issues, and her popularity has fallen significantly. While economic growth in Taiwan has increased, inequality and deteriorating cross-Strait relations have been hard on the ruling party. Tsai needs to work with the new premier, William Ching-te Lai, to regain people’s trust for the local elections in 2018.

Abstract:
In this study, a simple approach was described to investigate the theoretical models for electrospun polymer nanofiber-reinforced nanocomposites. For predicting the tensile strength of the electrospun nylon 6 nanofiber-reinforced polyurethane acrylate composites, conventional Pukanszky, Nicolais–Narkis, Halpin–Tsai, and Neilson models were used, while for Young’s modulus, Halpin–Tsai, modified Halpin–Tsai, and Hui–Shia models were used. As per the Pukanszky model, composite films showed better interaction since the values of the interaction parameter, B, were more than 3. Similarly, the value of an interfacial parameter, K, was less than 1.21 (K = −5, for the curve fitting) as per the Nicolais–Narkis model, which indicated better interfacial interaction. For composite films, the modified Halpin–Tsai model was revised again by introducing the orientation factor, α, which was 0.333 for the randomly oriented continuous nanofiber-reinforced composites, and the exponential shape factor, ξ = (2l/d)e−avf−b, which showed the best agreement with the experimental Young’s modulus results. Based on mentioned remarks, these models would be applicable for estimating the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of electrospun nanofiber-reinforced polymer composite films.
