Abstract:
The root ts-d-q found in the Old Testament has always presented its interpreters with a challenge. It is the root from which modern versions usually offer us the word ‘righteous’. Actually two problems arise over it, for from this root we have both a verb and a noun. So we must discover in the case of the noun, what the feminine form tsedaqah actually means and how it differs from its masculine counterpart, tsedeq, if at all; and, in the case of the verb, what tsedeq means in the Qal as well as in the Hiphil, as hitsdiq.

Abstract:
The Hebrew expression in the Old Testament mishpat u-tsedaqa, conventionally translated ‘justice and righteousness’, has a particular application to the social responsibility of the king. The state, in the person of the king, is seen in the Old Testament as having an obligation to exercise its power on behalf of the most vulnerable. This may be illustrated by the widespread evidence from the ancient Near East of administrative and judicial action undertaken by kings to cancel debts, provide for the release of debt slaves, remit taxes, order the return of distrained property, and so forth. Although the impact of such measures would have been limited, and the tradition is attenuated in later levels of the text, the ideal of the state as the protector of the poor may be applied to the state’s relationship with the modern capitalist economy. It demands that the economy should be regulated to protect the most vulnerable against the impoverishment resulting from its transformation by globalized capitalism. The reality, however, especially in the UK and the US, is that the state colludes with capitalism to increase inequality and deepen poverty.

Abstract:
Uno de los preceptos de la religión judía, contenido tanto en la ley escrita como en la ley oral, es el de la tsedaqá. Este concepto, que podría traducirse como “rectitud”, se aproximaría al ámbito de la justicia social, en el sentido de que su objetivo sería paliar o revertir aquellas situaciones de desigualdad contenidas dentro de la sociedad a través de los actos de caridad de sus integrantes. Su práctica continuada por parte de los piadosos llevaría, por lo tanto, al tikkun ha-olam; esto es, a conseguir una mejora de la sociedad cuya consecuencia final sería la reparación del mundo, ya que el objetivo de paz estaría completo o más próximo a su conclusión. En estas páginas nos centraremos en el desarrollo de este término y en el modo en que ha sido transmitido oralmente a través de la literatura en época contemporánea como valor dentro de una cultura educativa.
