Abstract:
It is clear from the comparative study of Upper German evidence undertaken in this book that multilateral associations were ubiquitous in the Holy Roman Empire in the period 1346–1521, and that they structured the interactions of all the diverse political actors within it. Indeed, inhabitants of the late medieval Empire used an ‘associative’ language of membership and mutual assistance, and the multilateral metaphor of the Quaternion (a symbolic amalgam of political actors of various statuses), when attempting to apprehend and articulate the structure and function of their polity. Modern unitary concepts of statehood and constitutionality, which dominate how we narrate and describe late medieval and early modern history, are inadequate to make sense of the Empire’s structure. The paradigm of ‘associative political culture’ offered in this book therefore not only reconceptualizes the Empire, but also has implications for alternative ways of envisioning political configurations and developments in pre-modern Europe.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates how contemporary ‘media culture’ has altered the way we experience and communicate religion and explains the role which language and other semiotic resources play in mediating religious experience and transforming the notion of sacred space, sacred time and a sense of communion based on collective emotion. The underlying assumption is that media together with religious institutions proximize the spiritual reality to believers and create a community of the faithful by reducing various dimensions of distance and providing the audience with a sense of participation and interaction. The chapter focuses on mediated rituals and demonstrates how both TV and radio, with their semiotic properties enabling liveness and immediacy, blur time-space boundaries, change the nature of individual and collective experience, and enhance the emotional and axiological potential of religious messages. It discusses the role of metaphor and metonymy as well as other cognitive operations within discourse space (involving both verbal and visual strategies) in these processes.

Abstract:
This book explores cognitive sociology as an area of inquiry focused on culture, cognition, and the social dimensions of human thought. Highlighting differing traditions, from cultural sociological perspectives focused on emphasizing group differences in categorical knowledge to neuropsychology-influenced integrative perspectives analyzing the mechanisms by which cultural processes enter into individual minds, this volume brings together prominent scholars from sociology and other disciplines to feature the key tensions, debates, and directions in the field. The volume is organized into seven parts. The first three parts are organized around general theoretical, interdisciplinary, and methodological contributions. Part I addresses theoretical foundations that forge cognitive sociology and its relationships to cultural sociology and to cognitive science. Part II emphasizes perspectives from other fields that inform an interdisciplinary cognitive social science. Part III highlights methodological developments in cognitive sociological analysis. The next four parts focus on employing cognitive sociology to examine the sociocultural organization of specific cognitive processes. Part IV analyzes the sociology of perception and attention. Part V explores the sociocultural framing of meaning through oppositions, language, analogies, and metaphor. Part VI looks at the social construction of categories, boundaries, and identities. Part VII examines collective experiences of time and memory.
