Full textAfter the 16th century, Angola history linked both trade and slavery for commercial purposes and could not fonction without the merchandise considered legitimate by the europeans. Thus the angolan transition to modernity, in the 19th century, follows the evolution of slave trading and as this trade is subject to questioning and progressively abolished in Europe, the Angolan structures develop in an attempt to maintain african hegemonies against various challenges. The african production now proposes new merchandise, imposing new relations to the europeans. The long distance trade, first african then international, beings about changes as well as the modernization of the production agents, whilst exerting influence on political organizations. Of such, the imbangala and the tshokwe, both of lunda origin, are the perfect example. They become the agents of change and the europeans' privileged interlocutors, thus making way for the definition of the conditions of african hegemony as well as its, inevitable, wasting away

Full textHow did the Koongo-speaking populations in Kongo and Kakongo lived the 17th and 18th centuries, which were periods of important social and economic transformations induced by slave trade ? The numerous linguistic sources of european origin (bilingual dictionaries, etc. ). Which are, for most of them, original and used in this work as essential material, permit to answer this question. On one hand, they are showing, with the Kikoongo lexis, the lexical and morphosyntaxical unicity between the different dialects of this language, going from the borders of the luanda area to mayumba, and from the Congo river to the margins of pool. On the other hand, they are proving the stability of basic cultural forms such as matrilinear kinship and "traditional" religion which nevertheless, has to compete with christianity. At the same time, important changes occur in food with the entry of american plants ( cassava, corn), and in craft industry for some local productions (palm tree fibres) are drawing back from the importations. The Koongo-speaking area becomes the second zone of contacts and trade between African and european people, after the gulf of Guinea

Full textThrough the techno-typological study of ceramic series resulting from shell middens situated on the coast in the South of Luanda (Angola), and outdoor deposits in the Northern part of the country (Kibaxe-Dembos region), this work tried to restore the dynamics of evolution of cultural traditions in this part of southern Africa, from the first centuries AD up to our contemporary period. The corpus was constituted by series resulting from ancient excavations but also stemming from recent works, in particular those realized since 2005 on the deposit of Cabolombo to Benfica. The analysis notably concerned the variability of decorations (sets) and their layout, and it allowed identifying five ceramic styles, which seem to have a chronological meaning and thus provide a chronocultural frame which can serve as reference for future works. That chronological frame covers all the Iron Age and also concerns the first centuries of colonial period. In parallel to this work of archaeology two ethnological inquiries were conducted. The first one in the region of Luanda among shell fishermen who perpetuate an ancient practice to collect "Mabangas "; the other one in the Namibe desert, among Kwissis and Kwepes( khoisan type) populations, belonging to the old pre-Bantu collection. These two inquiries had a double vocation: collect on the ground possibly rare data that could provide information on lifestyles, threatened today by the evolution of the Angolan society, and at the same time, initiate an ethno-archaeological step, to enlighten certain situations met in the various archaeological contexts

Full textPolitical unity and territorial kingdom Kongo ended with the arrival of Europeans among Bakongo. In effect, started by the Portuguese from 1482 and relayed by other Europeans among which the Dutch, the Spanish, the Italian, the French and English, the European presence in the kingdom Kongo had two important impacts : the slave trade and evangelization of peoples. The consequences of these two phenomenons were not only the end of the power of State organized on a large space, but also new influences, and even ruptures, sociocultural among all peoples Bakongo. At the time of systematic occupation of Africa by the European colonial powers, the area of the Territory Kongo fell mainly under the domination french, belgian and Portuguese. This thesis deals with the shock colonial of society Kongo facing occupation portuguese, mass emigration of populations of the north of Angola to the Belgian Congo and the consequences sociocultural which resulted. As to the question methodological and to that of the use of historical data, it was stressed the importance of oral sources that allow another approach of the past which, in turn, makes emerge the concepts of "history in Africa" and "History of Africa". Without sacrificing the scientific rigor, this thesis has privileged the vision of the history of Africa in which the African ceases to be considered as a simple object of the history to become a subject of history
Toldo, Federica. ""Da geração" e "da simpatia" : relacionalidade em prática em três danças da Ilha de Luanda (Angola)." Doctoral thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/34137.
Full textMy thesis focuses on the relational fabric that emerges from three dances practiced on the Island of Luanda –a now urbanised coastal strip off the city shore, formerly inhabited by fishermen. In the local Portuguese dialect, the term “dance” (“dança”) not only refers to an action undertaken by individuals, but also designates a social grouping. The term “dance” means first and foremost “group”. This linguistic particularity led me to view dance from two perspectives: representation and participation. Two of the three dances analysed are recreational: the carnival dance, and the circle dance (rebita) –typically during which couples are formed. The third dance is a ritual dance practiced during the offering to the mermaid (kyanda), who manifests her dissatisfaction through sea storms. The analysis of these three dances shows the axiological pre-eminence of the relational domain of affinity, conjugality and partnership. This contrasts with the genealogic domain, which is troubled by the transmission of spiritual afflictions (ilundu spirits). It is common for these three groups to overlap; individuals –especially women– tend to flow from group to group. This led me to consider the role of dance practices in the densification of the Island’s relational fabric. Implemented by dances, this relational density brings a new perspective to the difficult task of understanding the cultural specificity of the Island’s population within Luanda’s broader context
