Abstract:
John Stevens was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund to compose a concerto for its principal tubist, Gene Pokorny. The piece began with multiple conversations between composer and performer and from these meetings actualized the influences that shaped the work. The most important influences that the performer mentioned were his passions for American steam locomotives and the Three Stooges, both of which were used by Stevens in his rendering of the composition. This concerto was designed to be played on the famous CC York tuba that was played by the former principal tubist of the CSO, Arnold Jacobs, the same instrument used today. Insight into the history of the York tuba will be given as well as their influence on contemporary manufacturing and design. Focus is given to how Stevens writes the piece idiomatically to the CC tuba and potential performance problems when a performer uses tubas of a different key. Conversations with both gentlemen will display the non-musical influences on Journey and how this effects the composition. Stevens' compositional language is explored and discussed in respect to the challenges and idiosyncrasies within the work. Collegiate tuba professors provide explanation for works level of interest within their respective schools and experiences.

Kittaweepitak, Boonyarit. "The Evolving Role of the Solo Euphonium in Orchestral Music: An Analysis of Lorin Maazel's "Music for Flute and Orchestra with Tenor Tuba Obbligato" and Karl Jenkins' "Cantata Memoria"." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1707374/.

Full text
Abstract:
The euphonium has been an integral part of wind bands and brass bands for more than a century. During this time the instrument has grown in stature in both types of band, as an ensemble member and a solo instrument. Until recently, however, the instrument has been underrepresented in orchestral literature, although a growing number of composers are beginning to appreciate the characteristics of the instrument. The purpose of this research is to explore the perceived rise of the euphonium in an orchestral environment through analyzing the significance of the role it plays within Lorin Maazel's Music for Flute with Tenor Tuba Obbligato (1995) and Karl Jenkins' Cantata Memoria (2005); specifically, how the euphonium contributes to the orchestral scores in relation to its capabilities as an instrumental voice.

The 20th century English composer depicted in this dissertation, Ralph Vaughan Williams(1872–1958), is similar to the Hungarian composer, Bela Bartok(1881–1945), in the way that they are both famous for collecting folk materials. Unlike other renowned composers, Vaughan Williams learnt music because it was a family tradition and did not find his own voice until later on. When his father past away in 1903, he moved to Leith Hill Place with his mother. It was in this place that he discovered extreme passion for folk songs, and he soon found himself going door to door, requesting and collecting folk materials. In 1910, he not only had a collection of more than 800 folk songs, they were also largely incorporated in his compositions. As a result, the use of folk songs became Vaughan Williams’ distinctive style of composition. The Tuba Concerto analyzed in this dissertation is not only the first concerto piece written specifically for the tuba instrument, but also one of Vaughan William’s major works that is employed with abundant folk materials. This dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter one is the research motive and methods followed by a brief overview of the history of the term “tuba”. Chapter two discusses the reason behind the making of this concerto along with the biographies of the composer and the two tuba soloists, Philip Bramwell Catelinet(1910–1995)from the premiere held in England and William John Bell(1902–1971)from the premiere held in the United States. Chapter three and four is the pivotal chapters of this dissertation as it is the movement analysis and interpretation of Tuba Concerto. Chapter five then summarizes and concludes the thesis.

To make awed sounds, he also has used strong tones of tuba. He has created the distinguishing feature of tuba so that the tuba players could make the appealing melodies.
