In 1989 and 1990, small, medium and large seed tubers, cv. Total yield, ware yield (> 150 g), numbers of tubers and numbers of stems increased as seed tuber size increased. Also, decreasing the size of seed tubers decreased the numbers of tubers in all sizes except those > 200 g. SUMMARYA series of experiments examining the influences of size and spacing of planted potato tubers (‘seed’ tubers) on tuber yields was conducted at four sites in the UK in 1982–84. A new approach to data analysis was used to estimate the optimum tuber planting density for different ware grades. The optimum density, which maximized returns, decreased with increasing seed tuber weight and ratio of seed-tuber cost to ware value and with lower than average total tuber yields. Changing the required ware grade from 40–65 mm to 40–80 mm had a minimal effect on the optimum tuber planting density.Opt

Standard seed tuber of 25–125 g weight (30–55 mm) is known as seed size tubers in India. Obtaining seed size tuber is important for achieving higher potential of the cultivars. Purple and yellow nutsedges are two of the world's worst weeds, reproducing asexually by rhizomes that can develop into new shoots or tubers. These tubers are the storage organs for carbohydrate reserves that are replenished by growing shoots and exhausted by new shoot, root plus rhizome, and basal bulb production. Based on the biology of both species, we hypothesized that the regenerative potential of purple and yellow nutsedge would decrease, with increasing shoot clipping–soil disturbance (SCSD) frequency and decreasing tuber size. Over the years, studies have been conducted to increase the fraction of mid-size tubers, which are used as a planting material, within the general pool of tuber sizes. However, in many cases, misshapen tubers were formed, and the practice has not become widespread. Abstract During the pre-turnaround hydrostatic test, multiple tube leaks were discovered in the original water wall tubes of a 680 psig industrial boiler installed in 1954. Inspection of the water wall tubes of the boiler revealed significant pitting corrosion on the high heat flux side warranting tube repair or replacement, while the cold-side of the tube maintained close to original wall thickness. Metallurgical analysis determined the mode of failure to be caustic corrosion. Further investigation concluded that the physical root cause was localized higher heat flux due to the operation of l

Cyclic polarization of the UNS NO4400 alloy tube material was conducted to determine the pitting and repassivation (protection) potentials prior to the galvanic coupling study. The parameters studies include the potential-time relationship of uncoupled and coupled steel to UNS NO4400 alloy tubes, effect of anode size, galvanic current distribution, effect of water flow d

Abstract The Fractionator Overhead (OVHD) System of a Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) consists of shell and tube type Exchangers. Carbon Steel metallurgy is used in both shell and tube with Fractionator Tower OVHD vapor on shell side and crude feed on the tube side. Since commissioning, frequent failures of these exchangers have been reported causing loss of production. Failures were in the form of erosion-corrosion, pitting and general wall thickness loss on the tube Outer Diameter (OD) surface. These failures were as a result of under deposit corrosion due to presence of moderate to heavy foul

Abstract Waterside tube cracking is one of the major reasons for carbon steel boiler tube failure. Previous research has shown that the waterside cracking depends on environmental factors such as temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Failure analysis of failed industrial boiler tubes have shown that grain size and decarburized layer on the inner tube surface may play important roles on SAC cracking. Carbons steel samples were heat-treated to produce different microstructure features. A recirculation autoclave facility was set up, in which slow strain rate tests (SSRT) were carried out on heat-tre

Abstract A polyethylene unit experienced an ethylene gas leak within a high pressure tube and shell heat exchanger resulting from water side corrosion of UNS N04400 (Monel Alloy) tubes. To address historical water side exchanger fouling issues, the cooling tower was transitioned to a polymeric dispersant program capable of handling higher stressed chemistry. A failure analysis revealed that tube wall loss was localized to areas beneath residual deposits that had accumulated at baffle plates. Abstract Aluminum radiator tubes must have several demanding properties to be successful including good heat transfer, high strength to withstand internal pressures, brazeability for attaching external fins and headers, corrosion resistance to cooling fluids, and long service life. Tubes having a wall thickness of approximately 320 microns (11.8 mils) must meet all these properties. A modified simulated service test (SST) of various aluminum radiator tube alloys was conducted to determine how well coolant-side alloys of eight different composite materials resisted corrosion. Abstract:
Fossil fuel power plants are complex systems containing multiple components that create extreme environments for the purpose of extracting usable energy. Failures in the system can lead to increased down time for the plant, reduction of power and significant cost for repairs. In the past, inspections and maintenance of the plant's superheater tubes has been predominantly manual, laborious, and extremely time consuming. This is due to the pipe's small diameter size (between 1.3 and 7.6 cm) and the coiled structure of the tubing. In addition, the tubes are often stacked close to each other, limi

These include a range of morphological characters such as leaf shape and leaf composition (waxes, lignin etc..) but also different in developmental potentials. Apical buds of juvenile plants are vegetative, while those of mature plants can be reproductive. Likewise, basal buds form in the axills of juvenile leaves have different fates than distal buds formed in the axils of mature leaves. The Bingham Canyon Mine, located near Salt Lake City, Utah, is surrounded by more than 6 billion tons of waste rock developed over the open cut mining history from 1903 to present; the surface area of the waste rock is approximately 5000 acres. From 1930 to 2000, selected portions of the waste rock dumps were commercially leached using a ferric-sulfate-based lixiviant to extract copper, whereas other portions have only received meteoric leaching. In this study, replicable large-scale tests were used to analyze the ability of products to prevent sediment from exiting the perimeter of a site via sheet flow.
