A 31-year-old male fire fighter with a history of recurrent “atypical pneumonia,” environmental and drug allergies, nasal polyps, asthma, and Crohn's disease (not on immunosuppressants) was transferred from an outside hospital for management of acute hypoxic respiratory failure with peripheral eosinophilia. Prior to admission he reported a 2-week history of worsening dyspnea, productive cough and wheezing, prompting an urgent care visit where he was prescribed amoxicillin-clavulanate for suspected community acquired pneumonia. Despite multiple days on this medication, his symptoms significantly worsened until he was unable to lie flat without coughing or wheezing. He was ultimately admitted to an outside hospital where his labs were notable for a leukocytosis to 22,000 and peripheral eosinophilia with an absolute eosinophil count of 9700 cells/microL. His blood cultures and urine cultures were negative, and a radiograph of the chest demonstrated bilateral nodular infiltrates. Abstract:

The main conclusions that can be drawn from most of previous non-linear simulations of LPV (Keeley 1970, Rose & Smith 1972, Wood 1974, Tuchman et al. 1978, 1979) are the following:In all cases where the fundamental mode is predicted, by the linear analysis, to be the dominant, the pulsations are seen to diverge and lead to a rather violent mass-loss process (Wood 1974, Tuchman, Sack & Barkat 1979).A steady pulsation with (roughly) a limit cycle does set in only in those cases where the linear analysis predicts that the dominant mode (with the largest value of the growth rate) is the first overtone (or higher). In all these cases the actual limit cycle is found to be in a good agreement with the linear predictions, with regard to the pulsation mode and period (Wood 1974, Tuchman, Sack & Barkat 1979). However, it is important to note that periods, for these overtone pulsators, are always found to be smaller than 300 days (Wood 1974, Tuchman, Sack & Barkat 1979). Increasing the luminosity of these models, in order to increase their periods, results in a switch to the fundamental mode, followed by the violent relaxation oscillations, mentioned above.

An inventory of the bryophytes from Tucuman-Bolivian montane forest of Bolivia resulted in 374 species distributed among 184 genera and 70 families; liverworts are represented by 97 species, 42 genera, 20 families; hornworts by a single species, genus and family; and mosses by 276 species, 141 genera, 49 families. Twenty-seven percent of the known Bolivian bryophytes are present in the Tucuman-Bolivian montane forest. Comparing the bryophyte composition of the two recognized montane forest ecoregions, the Yungas and the Tucuman-Bolivian, the former is 2.8 times more diverse than the latter

A stepwise validation procedure was carried out to translate and develop a Turkish version of the Tuckman Procrastination Scale. A total of 858 college students completed the Tuckman Procrastination Scale, the Academic Self-efficacy Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. Two items in the original scale loaded on a different factor and were removed from the measure. The 14-item scale had a one-factor solution as supported by subsequent confirmatory factor analysis. The Turkish version of the Tuckman Procrastination Scale scores correlated negatively with academic self-efficacy and self-esteem scores. Overall results provided evidence for the validity and the reliability of the scale scores.

Abstract:

We report a new star formation history for the Tucana dwarf spheroidal galaxy, obtained from a new look at a deep HST/ACS colour-magnitude diagram. We combined information from the main sequence turn-off and the horizontal branch to resolve the ancient star formation rates on a finer temporal scale than previously possible. We show that Tucana experienced three major phases of star formation, two very close together at ancient times and the last one ending between 6 and 8 Gyr ago. We show that the three discrete clumps of stars on the horizontal branch are linked to the distinct episodes of star formation in Tucana. The spatial distribution of the clumps reveals that each generation of stars presents a higher concentration than the previous one. The simultaneous modelling of the horizontal branch and the main sequence turn-off also allows us to measure the amount of mass lost by red giant branch stars in Tucana with unprecedented precision, confirming dwarf spheroidals to be excellent laboratories to study the advanced evolution of low-mass stars.

Abstract:

Educational institutions developed in Tucson, Arizona in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, during a critical time in cultural and political shifts of power between Anglo and Mexican elites in Southwestern United States. My qualitative analysis reconstructs language policies in the incipient educational system in Territorial Tucson. This article examines official and unofficial language policies in both public and private schools in Tucson that reflected this accommodation of power and the negotiation of a new racial hierarchy in the context of westward expansion. I argue that the private schools Mexican elites founded in this period maintained bilingual instruction and promoted biliteracy as a means of racially and linguistically distancing themselves from Anglos, Indians and Mexicans from lower socioeconomic classes in public schools.

Abstract:

Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency, an X-linked disorder, is the most common cause of inherited urea cycle disorders. Approx. 90 mutations that produce reduced levels of ornithine transcarbamylase (OTCase) activity have been identified in patients [Tuchman (1993) Hum. Mutat. 2, 174–178; Tuchman and Plante (1995) Hum. Mutat. 5, 293–295]. A model of the three-dimensional structure of OTCase, developed on the basis of its homology to the catalytic subunit of Escherichia coli aspartate transcarbamylase (ATCase) [Tuchman, Morizono, Reish, Yuan and Allewell (1995) J. Med. Genet. 32, 680–688], and in good agreement with the crystal structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa OTCase [Villeret, Tricot, Stalon and Dideberg (1995) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 92, 10762–10766], indicates that many mutations that produce severe clinical symptoms are at the active site or buried in the interior of the protein. However, one of the few recurrent mutations, R277W, an alteration that produces a milder phenotype of ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, is located in the model in a loop remote from the active site that is analogous to a similar loop (the 240's loop, a flexible loop of the catalytic chain of Escherichia coliaspartate transcarbamylase, comprised of residues 230–250) of ATCase. Human wild-type OTCase and the R277W mutant have been cloned and overexpressed in E. coli and a rapid and efficient purification method utilizing the bisubstrate analogue, NΔ-(phosphonacetyl)-l-ornithine, has been developed and used to purify both proteins. Gel chromatography indicates both are trimeric. The pH dependence of the kinetic parameters of the wild-type enzyme is similar to that of E. coli OTCase [Kuo, Herzberg and Lipscomb (1985) Biochemistry 24, 4754–4761], suggesting that its catalytic mechanism is similar, although its maximal activity is approx. 10-fold less. Compared with the wild-type, the R277W mutant has nearly 70-fold lower affinity for l-ornithine, shows no substrate inhibition, and its thermal stability is reduced by 5 °C. Its reduced affinity for l-ornithine, which in turn results in lower activity at physiological concentrations of ornithine, as well as its reduced stability, may contribute to the clinical effects that it produces.

Tucano Toco (Ramphastos toco) é um dos grandes frugívoros de dossel, tanto de florestas contínuas quanto ambientes semi-abertos. No Pantanal Sul o Tucano Toco é comum em paisagens que intercalam ambientes fechados e abertos. Neste estudo avaliamos a abundância de Tucano Toco em capões de mata e mata ciliar, bem como a produção e consumo de frutos carnosos durante a estação seca. Apenas seis espécies frutificaram em capões de mata, e cinco em mata ciliar. Nos capões de mata a maior abundância do gênero Ficus, cuja frutificação foi assincrônica, proporcionou disponibilidade constante de frutos. Na mata ciliar a oferta de frutos carnosos foi variável e as figueiras foram raras e não foram detectadas pelo método de quadrante centrado. Nos dois hábitats os tucanos exploraram frutos de Cecropia pachystachya, Genipa americana e Ficus. A ocorrência de Tucano Toco foi sempre maior em capões de mata do que em mata ciliar, sendo mais elevada em um dado hábitat, quando pelo menos duas espécies disponibilizavam frutos carnosos. A maior regularidade na ocorrência dos tucanos em capões de mata pode ter sido conseqüência da oferta constante de frutos carnosos, a qual ocorreu devido à presença das espécies do gênero Ficus neste hábitat. Porém, a presença da espécie nos hábitats avaliados deve decorrer da combinação de todos os frutos comuns na sua alimentação.

Abstract:

An alternative risk assessment method, known as failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), is demonstrated on the regional water supply systems (RWSS) in Tucson, AZ, USA that combines delivery of potable and reclaimed water and conveyance of wastewater to a developing area within the Tucson RWSS. The goal of FMECA is to examine the volumetric severity of a component failure on the overall system function by modeling the system under alternative failure modes. Within FMECA, the Risk Priority Number (RPN) is applied to compare the risk criticality between components' failures. To complete FMECA, the Tucson RWSS is represented in a network flow model that optimally allocates flows between sources and demand points to minimize operational costs. Potential failure mode consequences are evaluated from the flow model as the volume of water not delivered to users if the component is unavailable. The volumetric severity of the failure event is converted to an ordinal value using stakeholder judgment. Likelihood of each failure mode is similarly defined by stakeholders on a 1–10 scale. The RPN is then computed as the product of the severity and likelihood. RPN values for all failure modes are then ranked to assess the most critical elements. Alternative system configurations are examined to assess the value of redundancies on the Tucson RWSS resilience.

Implementing a viable biofeedback program into an integrative mental health inpatient rehabilitation program has its appeals and its challenges. This article describes the biofeedback program within the Sierra Tucson inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Abstract:

Two new tiger beetle species from subhumid Tucuman-Bolivian forest in the National Tariquia Reserve in Tarija, Bolivia, are described and illustrated. Cylindera (Plectographa) yaguaree n. sp. is the first described Neotropical species in this genus that has setae over the complete elytral surface. Pseudoxycheila tucumana n. sp. closely resembles Pseudoxycheila andina Cassola, but is readily distinguished by spots on elytra longer than elytra width. These two new species are likely endemic to Tucuman-Bolivian forest and bring the known endemic forest tiger beetle fauna of this ecoregion to three species.

SummaryTucuman Parrot Amazona tucumana breeds in the cloud-forest of south-eastern Bolivia and north-western Argentina (or Southern Yungas forest). We studied the nesting requirements of the Tucuman Parrot and assessed cavity availability, reuse, and spatial pattern of nests in El Rey National Park – one of the last mature, undisturbed areas of the Southern Yungas forest. We recorded 44 nesting attempts in seven tree species, with most nests (95%) being located in live canopy trees > 60 cm DBH. Most parrot nest-cavities occurred in Blepharocalix salicifolius (60%) and cavities in this species were selected significantly more than expected based on availability. Nests were shallower and higher than nests of other Amazona species. For all years combined, mean nest density of Tucuman Parrot was 0.24 ± 0.04 nest ha-1 and the distance to the nearest active nest was significantly greater than the distance between all trees used as nests. Nesting pairs of Tucuman Parrot were separated by 144.1 ± 152.8 m, while potential nest-trees were 66.0 ± 55.4 m apart. Density of suitable cavities for nesting was 4.6 cavities ha-1. Approximately 16 suitable cavities were available for each breeding pair (0.24 breeding pair ha-1 and four suitable cavities ha-1) and 5% of the suitable cavities available were occupied, suggesting that suitable cavities are not a limiting resource. However, due to the territorial behaviour of breeding pairs, some of these cavities are unavailable to other breeding pairs. The spatial requirements of Tucuman Parrot for nesting could limit management actions intended to increase the density of nesting pairs.

El artículo de Einsenberg "Ciencia Social, Política Pública y Amnistía para Gallinas" discute el papel principal del Condado de Pima en Arizona, como una iniciativa para desarrollar una agricultura urbana en Tucson. Ella dirigió un Equipo de Política, que proveyó a otros equipos con información sobre políticas, los educó sobre procesos y los ayudó con la negociación de la política medioambiental. Con una serie de iniciativas que incluyen el desarrollo de hojas informativas, entrenamientos sobre información política y conducción de talleres, el Equipo de Política facilitó el desarrollo de un plan tentativo para el comité de zonificación de Tucson, que incluyó un elemento distintivo sobre agricultura urbana. AbstractTariana, an endangered Arawak language of north-western Amazonia (Brazil), has a number of strategies for nominalizing verbs. These include noun classifiers as word-class changing derivational markers, in addition a number of nominalizing suffixes. Nominalizations are a subclass of nouns, with their own set of special properties. As a consequence of areal diffusion from the neighboring and unrelated East-Tucanoan languages, Tariana nominalizations come to be used as complementation and relativization strategies. This is especially so for innovative speakers of Tariana who use Tucano on a daily basis, and whose language bears a strong imprint of Tucano, the main language of the region.

AbstractMultiwavelength solar irradiance measurements between 400 and 900 nm were made on cloudless days in Tucson, Arizona, over a 30-month period between March 2010 and August 2012. They were analyzed to simultaneously retrieve aerosol optical depth (AOD) and ozone column abundance and to examine their monthly variation. These retrievals were compared with results from a similar study done at the same location between 1975 and 1977. The near tripling of population in Tucson over the past 35 years may have contributed to a 19% increase in the AOD, and the annual-mean ozone column abundance was found to be 11% lower than that inferred during the mid-1970s.

A pesquisa aborda a tematização da cultura em dois jornais da cidade de Imperatriz-MA: O Progresso e Capital. O objetivo foi apontar as temáticas mais recorrentes e compreender as representações contidas no material jornalístico a partir de conjunturas políticas, sociais e econômicas, nos 1970 e 1990. A partir dos conceitos de campo de Bourdieu (1997), de representação de Chartier (1990) e notícia, de Tuchman (1983), problematizamos o jornalismo e o agendamento da cultura. O estudo utilizou os recursos da análise de conteúdo e da pesquisa documental. Os impressos apresentaram uma cobertura do tema cultura, mas com pouco espaço. Concorrendo com notícias e manchetes de políticas local e nacional, os tópicos mais abordados no O Progresso foram a literatura, a televisão e o cinema e no Capital, a música e literatura. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Jornalismo; Cultura; Imperatriz-MA. ABSTRACT The research addresses the thematization of culture in two newspapers in the city of Imperatriz-MA: O Progresso e Capital. The objective was to identify the most recurrent themes and to understand the representations contained in journalistic material from political, social and economic conjunctures in the 1970s and 1990s. From the field concepts of Bourdieu (1997), from Chartier (1990) and news from Tuchman (1983), we problematize journalism and the scheduling of culture. The study used the resources of content analysis and documentary research. The Newspaper presented a coverage of the theme culture, but with little space. Competing with news and local and national policy headlines, the most topics touched in O Progresso were literature, television and film and in Capital, music and literature. KEYWORDS: Journalism; Culture; Imperatriz-MA. RESUMEN La investigación aborda la tematización de la cultura en dos periódicos de la ciudad de Imperatriz – MA: O Progresso y Capital. El objetivo fue apuntar las temáticas más frecuentes y comprender las representaciones contidas en el material periodístico a partir de diferentes conyuncturas políticas, sociales e económicas, en los años 1970 y 1990. A partir de los conceptos de campo de Bourdieu (1997), de representación de Chatier (1990) y noticia de Tuchman (1983), problematizamos el periodismo y el agendamiento de la cultura. La investigación utilizó los recursos del análisis de contenidos y de la investigación documental. Los resultados aputan que O Progresso y Capital apresentaron unacobertura del tema cultura, pero con poco espacio. En competencia con noticias y manchetes de política local y nacional, los tópicos más abordados en O Progresso fueron la literatura, la televisón y el cine, el O Capital tuvo una cobertura centrada en la musica y literatura. Abstract:

Este artigo se propõe a analisar o modo como a figura do comunista foi discursivamente significada pela imprensa do interior brasileiro durante o primeiro ano do golpe civil militar, em 1964. Para isso, foram utilizados os jornais Caiçara e O Comércio, fundados nas cidades de Porto União, Santa Catarina, e União da Vitória, Paraná, produtores de notícia durante o período político em questão. O aparato metodológico utilizado baseia-se na Análise de Discurso de linha francesa (PÊCHEUX, 2008; ORLANDI, 2010) e parte da concepção do jornalismo como atividade que pode, potencialmente, construir e significar socialmente a realidade (TUCHMAN, 1976; BERGER & LUCKMANN, 1998).
