Abstract:
AbstractThe acrylate monomer was synthesized by two step process. 2,4-dichloro-1-ene(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenone (DHP) was synthesized using 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde and 2,4-dichloro acetophenone. 4-[3-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl]phenylacrylate (DCP) was prepared by reacting DHP with acryloyl chloride. The synthesized monomer was copolymerized with 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and styrene using solution polymerization technique. Monomer and polymers were characterized by IR, NMR and UV techniques. The average molecular weight of the polymer was around 4000 g/mol. First and second decomposition temperature of the polymers was around 320 °C and 430 °C, respectively. The reactivity ratio of the polymers was calculated by Fineman-Ross, Kelen-Tudos and extended Kelen-Tudos methods. The synthesized monomer has been less reactive than the commercial monomer. The rate of photocrosslinking increased from 39 % to 99 % due to the using of copolymerization technique.

Abstract:
Soluble heterocomplexes consisting of sodium hydride in combination with trialkylaluminum derivatives have been used as anionic initiating systems at 100 °C in toluene for convenient homo-, co- and ter-polymerization of myrcene with styrene and isoprene. In this way it has been possible to obtain elastomeric materials in a wide range of compositions with interesting thermal profiles and different polymeric architectures by simply modulating the alimentation feed and the (monomers)/(initiator systems) ratio. Especially, a complete study of the myrcene-styrene copolymers (PMS) was carried out, highlighting their tapered microstructures with high molecular weights (up to 159.8 KDa) and a single glass transition temperature. For PMS copolymer reactivity ratios, rmyr = 0.12 ± 0.003 and rsty = 3.18 ± 0.65 and rmyr = 0.10 ± 0.004 and rsty = 3.32 ± 0.68 were determined according to the Kelen–Tudos (KT) and extended Kelen–Tudos (exKT) methods, respectively. Finally, this study showed an easy accessible approach for the production of various elastomers by anionic copolymerization of renewable terpenes, such as myrcene, with commodities.

Abstract The cationic copolymerization of 1,3-pentadiene (PD) with α-pinene (AP) initiated by aluminum trichloride (AlCl3) was carried out in N-pentane solvent. The effects of the polymerization temperature and the comonomer composition on the yield of the copolymer, softening point, Gardner color scale and number-average molecular weight (Mn) are discussed. The performance of the copolymer was better than that of AP homopolymer (PAP) and PD homopolymer (PPD). The structure of the copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), 13C-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In addition, the reactivity ratios for AP (M1) and PD (M2) determined by the Kelen-Tudos method from low-conversion data are r1=0.58 and r2=5.92, respectively.

Abstract:
The monomer phenyl acrylamide was synthesized by reacting acrylamide with chloro benzene in the presence of pyridine. Copolymer of phenyl acrylamide (PAM) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) was synthesized by free radical technique using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The overall conversion was kept low (≤ 15% wt/wt) for all studies copolymers samples. The synthesized copolymers were characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and their thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The copolymers compositions were determined by elemental analysis. The monomer reactivity ratios have been calculated by linearization methods proposed by Kelen-Tudos and Fineman-Ross. The derived reactivity ratios (r1, r2) for (PAM-co-MMA) are: (0.03, 0.593). The microstructure of copolymers and sequence distribution of monomers in the copolymers were calculated by statistical method based on the average reactivity ratios and found that these values are in agreement with the derived reactivity ratios. Copolymers of PAM with MMA formed alternating copolymers.

Abstract:
The copolymerization of styrene (St) with a bioderived monomer, pentadecylphenyl methacrylate (PDPMA), via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was studied in this work. The copolymerization reactivity ratio was calculated using the composition data obtained from 1H NMR spectroscopy, applying Kelen-Tudos and Finemann-Ross methods. The reactivity ratio of styrene (r1 = 0.93) and PDPMA (r2 = 0.05) suggested random copolymerization of the two monomers with alternation. The copolymerization conversion increased with increasing PDPMA concentration of the feed, upto 70 wt % PDPMA, but decreased thereafter. The molecular weight determined by gel permeation chromatography was lower than the theoretical values and the polydispersity increased from 1.32 to 2.19, with increasing PDPMA content in the feed. The influence of styrene content on the glass transition and thermal decomposition behavior of the copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Morphological characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a phase separated soft core-hard shell type structure. The complex viscosity and adhesion properties like peel strength and lap shear strength of the copolymer on different substrates increased with increasing styrene content.

Abstract:
<p>The radical terpolymerization reactions of the acceptor-donor-acceptor and donor-acceptor-donor systems, maleic anhydride (MA)-allyl propionate (AP)-methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St)-MMA-AP, had been studied. The terpolymerizations were carried out in methyl ethyl ketone at 60-75 °C in the presence of 2,2’-azoisobutyronitrile (ABIN) used as the initiator. Some kinetic parameters and copolymerization constants - for both, system were determined by dilatometric and Kelen-Tudos or Seiner-Lift methods. The obtained results are discussed in terms of the free monomer and complex chain growth models. It is shown that terpolymerization was carried out at a stage close to binary copolymerization of MA...AP complex with free MMA and St...MMA complex with AP in the both studied system, respectively. These systems are also used as model for interpretation of cyclocopolymerization mechanism in allyl methactylate-MA (or St) system. DTA and TGA analyses indicated the relatively high thermal stability of St-MMA-AP terpolymer. It is shown that this terpolymer decomposes through a one-step reaction at 310 °C, however MA-AP-MMA terpolymer decomposes through a multi-step reactions at 150, 260 and 310 °C.</p>

Abstract:
Linalool (LIN) and acrylamide (AM) have been copolymerized by benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in xylene at 75°C for 40 min. The system follows the ideal kinetics with bimolecular termination and results in the formation of nearly alternating copolymer as evidenced from the reactivity ratios, r1(AM) = 0.3 and r2(LIN) = 0.05, which have been calculated by the Kelen-Tudos method. The overall activation energy of copolymerization is 40 kJ mol−1. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum of the copolymer shows the presence of the band at 3395 cm−1 due to the alcoholic group of LIN and at 1453 cm−1 due to the amide group of AM. The 1HNMR spectrum shows peaks at 7.0-7.7δ due to the alcoholic group of LIN and at 6.3-7.0δ due to the amide group of AM. The Alfrey-Price Q- e parameters for LIN have been calculated as Q2 = 0:274 and e2 = −0.749. The mechanism of copolymerization has been elucidated. In this paper we also report on the measurement of Mark-Houwink constants in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 25°C by means of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as α = 0.50 and K = 7.5 × 10−4 dl g−1. The thermal decompositions of the copolymer are established with the help of the thermal gravimetric analysis technique.

Abstract:
Several available free software audio solutions were analyzed, and Jackdmp—a C++ reimplementation of the renowned JACK Audio Connection Kit—was selected as the most appropriate solution for a real-time audio architecture on DROPS. The JACK sound architecture provides the lowest processing latency possible on a desktop computer for a given set of sound card parameters. It reduces the latency jitter caused by software to zero and synchronizes streams at sample accuracy. A real-time admission scheme for JACK clients is proposed. The execution time of different typical JACK clients was analyzed with measurements to validate the assumptions the proposal is based on, but also to gain further knowledge about their timing behavior. The measurements showed that the condition set by Paul Davis—the time to process a client must be a linear function of the buffer size—holds for all tested clients. Jackdmp was ported to DROPS. The developed design of the port and its implementation is documented here. Measurements showed that—although the real-time performance of the Linux kernel is continuously being improved in the mainline and on special external branches—DROPS can provide a signaling latency that is two times lower on average than the values that can be achieved on the same machine running with a low latency patched Linux kernel. Thus, it can be stated that DROPS is well-suited for real-time audio processing and that the pursued path to use it as the foundation of a truly real-time capable audio workstation should be followed

Abstract:
The present work argues for the invaluable contribution of boy actors to the evolution of Tudor drama. Since most young scholars later went up to university or the'Inns of Court, I have also considered the course of drama in those institutions. This drama in education was given its prime impetus by visiting professional troupes, whose itineraries included schools, universities and the Inns. The education in drama they set before their audiences helped shape the schools drama, which was able to develop and expand in a way denied the professionals by the consequences of the Reformation. Not till Leicester's men established themselves at the Theater were the professionals enabled once again to strive towards their eventual pre-eminence. The argument in those'sections dealing with the colleges of Winchester, Eton and Westminster is supported by original archival material hitherto unavailable in print. The Introduction states the situation at the moment of the foundation of the Theater and of the first Blackfriars. That significant moment marked the beginnings of the decline in the fortunes of the forces of drama in education. The prehistory is rooted in the broad educational changes of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries (Chapter I) and in the seminal effect upon the drama of the sermons of the mendicant preachers of the later Middle Ages (Chapter I). These twin influences forged the drama of pre-Reformation England, defined the roles of professionals and boys alike (Chapter II).

Abstract:
The work aims to compare some different methods to evaluate residual stresses in a Autofretted tube. The experimental part was carried out through G.SACHS(4) method, and the analitycal part applied Timoshenko's Method(1), Mendelson's Method(2) and Chen's Method(3), making use of the Von Mises equivalent stress criteria for the first one and the Tresca equivalent stress criteria for the last two. Also, the numerical method applied was the Finite Element through the Von Mises cri teria. The results allowed to observe that those methods which made use of the same equivalent stress criteria would tend to the same results. To test this hypothesis, the Chen's Method was changed from Tresca criteria to Von Mises criteria. As the results were satisfactory, the Mendelson's Method was changed to Von Mises criteria, and the answers confirmed the hypothesis as well.

Nelson, Katie M. "Thomas Whythorne and Tudor musicians." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36853/.

Full text
Abstract:
The autobiography of Tudor musician Thomas Whythorne (1528-1596) is rich with self-exploration, social commentary and intimate storytelling. His story begins at childhood, then progresses chronologically as he gains an education, becomes a music master, and rubs shoulders with some of the most prominent people in England. This rich historical source has been strangely neglected, particularly by social historians, since its discovery in 1955. No one in any discipline has so far attempted an overall assessment of Whythorne the man, his work, and his significance. This is my aim. Working outwards from a close examination of his unique manuscript (Bodleian MS. Misc.c.330), this study hopes to shed new light on the music profession in early modern England. Whythorne adds considerable clarity of focus to the professionalization of music in the sixteenth century, as seen through the eyes of one of its advocates. Chapter 1 reviews Whythorne’s own life story and compares it with available external evidence. Chapter 2 proceeds to mine the manuscript itself for further evidence of Whythorne’s motives and methodology, offering a number of new hypotheses regarding the dating, content, and structure of the manuscript. Chapters 3 and 4 explore the nature of the Tudor musical profession, proposing and exploring a ‘spherical’ model of the music profession (in place of a hierarchical model). These chapters examine the various ‘spheres’ or types of musicians in turn, comparing Whythorne’s descriptions to external evidence. Chapter 5 then examines private music tutors in greater depth, as this group have previously remained very shadowy figures. Finally, Chapter 6 examines the world of early music printing in England, and Whythorne’s pioneering place in it. It also explores the nature and function of his self-fashioning, arguing that Whythorne constructed an identity well outside the realm of the generic. By viewing early modern society through Whythorne’s lens and comparing it to contemporary sources, we can shed new light on early modern musicians in England, and on the society in which they lived.
