In an attempt to understand the patterning regulation during limb development, three approaches have been taken in current studies. First, the relationship between cellular position and growth has been studied in cultures of dissociated fragments of mouse limb bud cells. The purpose of this chapter is to contextualize the challenges that the office of multicultural affairs staff at one state university experienced while moving to virtual learning formats. This study seeks to offer four specific recommendations and best practices for both multicultural affairs offices/centers and higher education institutions, in general, to ensure that students who utilize these virtual format spaces will continue to develop a sense of belonging within the institution. The author historicizes the formation of Black cultural centers and their development into multicultural affairs, tracks the public recognition of the essential importance of these centers and diversity and inclusion programming, and outlines the issues and problems the OMA staff faced in virtually providing a continued and ongoing sense of belonging for diverse students and staff. Higher education institutions can use these recommendations to inform the future of virtual multicultural affairs offices.

Cloud-based applications like email services or office suites enable real-time collaboration and traceability for shared data from nearly anywhere by using a modern web-browser. Thus, a significant shift has happened to these common applications to focus only on their usage than on their maintenance. However, today’s software development projects spend a noteworthy amount of resources to setup and maintain necessary development tools–over and over again. Thus, a similar shift for these development tools in the future would enable to spend valuable resources more on the actual project’s goals than on the tools’ maintenance. Especially development projects for cyber-physical systems, which interact with the real life’s surroundings by relying on sensors and actuators, have specific needs when using cloud-based solutions. In this contribution, preconditions, design decisions, and limitations of a cloud-based testing approach for CPS are outlined and discussed on the example “Hesperia.” “Hesperia” bases on the experiences from the development of “Caroline”–an autonomously driving vehicle for the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. “Hesperia” as a cloud-based testing approach was tested 2009 during the development of an autonomously driving vehicle at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Office of Information Technology at California State University, Fullerton is responsible for campus administrative mainframe and programming support, as well as for all mainframe applications such as the student records and financial accounting systems. Two campus organizations, University Extended Education and the Office of Analytical Studies rely heavily on the timeliness and accuracy of administration and student record data. These organizations have identified process improvements that are best met by client/server database applications. Due to limitations in the university’s Office of Information Technology support capabilities (budgetary and legacy system related), both University Extended Education and Analytical Studies have opted for internal database development while still relying on the Office of Information Technology’s mainframe data. This approach has resulted in increased local capabilities without the uncertainties related to working within an overloaded campus-wide Information Technology organization. Whether this approach is advantageous from an enterprise perspective remains to be seen.

This research situates the experiences of two married Black Queer women from working-class backgrounds, who are young academic professionals working in contingent positions in the Midwest during Trump's first year in office. Using a critical collaborative autoethnography, the authors situate their social media posts, reflections, and stories in the broader literature that denotes the challenges of spousal accommodations and diversity positions in corporatized universities for faculty and staff of color. The findings extend the literature by outlining the various ways in which we experience oppression as married Black Queer women in the university, surrounding community, and are burdened with diversity work without systemic intervention and institutional buy-in, in the Midwest. They share their stories to combat the silencing of their struggles and provide a path toward survival under these circumstances. They outline how the use of social media, writing, and creating intentional spaces of Black Joy have aided them as they move through their careers.

The conditions of the golden age liberated Massachusetts State College from the forces that had restricted its development since the nineteenth century. In spurts of growth linked to demographic and political cycles, M.S.C. mushroomed from a limited-purpose college into a comprehensive university and from a single campus in Amherst into a multicampus system, with units in Worcester and Boston and a statewide president’s office. By the end of the period, UMass seemed finally to have joined its counterparts in western states as a full-fledged public university in the land grant tradition, with strong programs of graduate education and research built on a large undergraduate base and linked to public service activities of applied research and nondegree instruction. The evolutionary process remained incomplete, however, and Massachusetts was still Massachusetts. The state’s nonelite private institutions watched the public expansion nervously and organized to protect their interests. Other components of the public system, including the state colleges and a new network of community colleges, vied for support from an intensely politicized government still unsure of its role in higher education. Though the effort during the 1930s to transform Massachusetts State College into a full public university had ended in failure when the General Court shelved the enabling legislation, the university movement had gained important ground. In particular, by the end of the prewar decade, the loose coalition of students, alumni/ae, and organized labor that had kept the movement alive had stirred public interest and won support from the college’s trustees as well as its president, Hugh Potter Baker. Baker himself, with his roots in the scientific-technical traditions of land grant education, had been slow to endorse a broadened conception of his institution but once converted had become an eloquent and persistent advocate. Believing, despite his disappointment over the legislature’s inaction, that World War II would foster increased interest in higher education and create new opportunities for M.S.C., Baker used his annual reports during the war to reiterate the central arguments of the university movement: that, in comparison with other states, Massachusetts was not providing adequate support for public higher education; that demand for places at the college far exceeded enrollment capacity; that the region’s private institutions were not prepared to respond to the need; and that large numbers of Massachusetts residents were being forced to attend public universities in other states.

Teaching institutions around the world are using large, unwieldy, and expensive learning management system (LMS) packages that are beginning to have profound effects on their whole organizations. Such LMS packages in turn go to great lengths to interoperate with the desktop information productivity software that almost all institutions use, Microsoft Office System. Since a very large part of the instructional content is generated in Office, it seems sensible to investigate whether straightforward extensions of the Office System could become an LMS in their own right. This chapter describes research and development that integrated Microsoft Office System, Share- Point Windows Services, and SharePoint Portal server (SPS) as the heart of an off-the-shelf LMS. Already designed to work closely with Office, SPS features are compared against the list of features expected of an ideal LMS. Where gaps in the LMS features were discovered in SPS, a number of small extensions of standard Office applications were proposed to fill these gaps and create a credible LMS. These Microsoft tools and custom extensions were put to use in teaching and administration during a 2-semester (8-month) trial at Bond University. The SPS installation was hosted in partnership with G-Netech Pty Ltd. This Bond University/G-Netech SharePoint Alliance project (BUGSA or SharePoint Alliance) was able to call upon combined research, development, and teaching expertise provided by the partners. The outcomes of the short trial support the concept of the Office System as a viable LMS.

Abstract:
The right to education is one of the fundamental human rights which enables personal development, independence, and full participation in all spheres of life. Article 70 of the Polish Constitution grants everyone the right to education and obliges public authorities to ensure universal and equal access to education for all citizens. By ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Poland recognized the right of this group of people to education and committed itself to ensuring an inclusive education system enabling integration at all levels of education. Poland has also ensured that these people will have access to universal higher education without discrimination, based on the principle of equality. Since 2008 the Office of Persons with Disabilities has been functioning in the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, which supports disabled students and PhD students of our University. The development of the Office over the period of more than ten years, applied procedures, and support systems are described in the article. Additionally, selected programmes and projects of the Institution and external organizations will be presented alongside the Office of Persons with Disabilities as the leading and supportive institution.

Universities are being asked to play an increasingly larger role in communities as catalysts for venture creation. Some universities have embraced taking an active role, often filling gaps in the local entrepreneurial environment, to induce venture creation. This chapter discusses the role the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, USA, has taken when partnering with local economic development entities in academic to practitioner-based activities. Over the last 12 years, UCF’s Office of Research and Commercialization (UCF ORC) has continuously worked on improving the process of getting ideas from the university laboratories and the community out to the market to help the community grow and flourish. UCF and a growing number of other universities are creating a suite of Entrepreneurial Support Entities (ESEs) that provide entrepreneurial help in all of a company’s development stages. This chapter presents the interactions among the ESEs, with UCF serving as an example to demonstrate the impact a university can have on its surroundings and on the community’s development. There are many examples of such interactions across the US at other universities as well.

The last semester of the final year of the Illinois student movement began peacefully enough, but when the Illiac IV supercomputer project was announced with suggestions it might be used for nuclear weapons development, the RU and newly formed Faculty for University Reform (FUR) quickly protested. Two youths failed in an attempt to bomb the downtown Champaign police station and were caught within moments, but no one was caught when a firebomb was thrown into the Armory ROTC office. Dr. Benjamin Spock, famous baby doctor and antiwar activist, spoke on campus, disparaging the idea of violent revolution.
