Abstract:
Accurate identification of prognostic markers in primary breast cancer is critical for selecting the most beneficial mode of therapy for the affected patients. The estrogen receptor (ER) is a major prognostic marker, indicating the estrogen-responsive nature of breast tumors and the likelihood of response to hormonal therapy. Estrogen receptor variants may possess outlaw functions, acting in a dominant-positive (transcriptionally active in the absence of estrogen) or dominant-negative (transcriptionally inactive, while inhibiting the function of wild-type ER) manner. "Development of a rhesus macaque model to study the interactions of HIV/malaria parasite co-infection." Tulane University, 2007.

Abstract:
HIV and the malaria parasite have great disease burdens world-wide, and because their endemic regions overlap, the risk of co-infection is great. Little is known about the impact one infection has on the other's progression, but given the number of people at risk of being co-infected and the magnitude of the disease burden associated with each disease, any interaction could have a large impact on public health As more attention has been given to the potential risks of this kind of co-infection, a number of studies have been initiated to investigate the effects of co-infection. Recent studies i

"The role of PDGF in pulmonary fibrosis and lung development." Tulane University, 2000.

Abstract:
Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) regulates proliferation, chemotaxis and differentiation of connective tissue cells during embryogenesis and possibly in disease states such as pulmonary fibrosis. To assess the effects of PDGF on lung development and pulmonary fibrosis in vivo, transgenic mice were generated in which expression of the human PDGF-A or -B gene was targeted to distal lung epithelium under control of the human surfactant protein C (SPC) promoter In SPC-PDGFB transgenic mice, overexpression of PDGF-B resulted in an abnormal lung structure in both adult and juvenile mice, includ

As a global crossroads, Panama has always been subject to the effects of globalization. In recent decades, with technology and market forces advancing with unprecedented speed, these effects have been especially impacting. Higher education is one sector that has changed dramatically. Until the 1980s, there were only two universities in Panama. Now, the Ministry of Education recognizes 36 institutions and the Public Registry lists far more This study examines how the process of globalization from 1990 to 2007 has affected the development of the university system in Panama. It explores this evol
