Abstract:
Recent sedimentary records have indicated that climate in low latitude, continental environments have varied significantly throughout the mid to late Holocene. In subtropical North America, major climatic phenomena such as the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the Bermuda High have been shown to play a major role in this variability. Specifically, the northward migration of the ITCZ and the eastward position of the Bermuda High during summer months leads to warmer and wetter conditions over subtropical North America, and vice versa. Water allocation in the upper Klamath Basin of Oregon and California has been challenging. Irrigators have increasingly turned to groundwater to make up for surface water shortages because of shifts in allocation toward in-stream flows for Endangered Species Act listed fishes. The largest increase in groundwater pumping has been in and around the Bureau of Reclamation's Klamath Irrigation Project, which includes the Tule Lake subbasin in the southern part of the upper Klamath Basin. Previous groundwater flow model simulations indicate that water level declines from pumping may result in decrea

In the Spring and Summer of 1942, the population of West Coast Japanese were rounded up and forcibly moved from their homes to temporary camps and soon after to ten permanent relocation camps in the interior Western United States. The decision to build a permanent center at Tule Lake was based upon the unique potential the area provided for agriculture on a huge scale. The other permanent centers were located in re

Evaporation ponds that dispose of agricultural drainwater provide attractive habitat for waterbirds but may result in contaminant exposure that impairs reproduction. I estimated post-hatching survival and evaluated productivity estimates for American avocets (Recurvirostra americana) nesting at evaporation ponds in the Tulare Basin, California from 1991 to 1993. Avocets and Black-necked stilts (Himantopus mexicanus) comprised the majority of 5,969 nests found. Nest success and embryo mortality varied among ponds and between species. I evaluated the use of various wetlands by wintering ducks in the Tulare Lake Basin (TLB), California, during October 1982 - April 1983 and September 1983 - March 1984. Aerial waterfowl counts of the TLB were used to document spacial use patterns by ducks. Ground surveys on evaporation ponds in the Tulare Lake Drainage District (TLDD) were used to evaluate duck use of specific ponds with varying chemical and biological parameters. During mid-winter, up to 300,000 ducks used the TLB. The most abundant species (northern pintail (Anas acuta), northern shoveler (Anas clvoeata), and green-winged te

Abstract:
Late Victorian fiction often poses the trope of the rational, masculine mind, frequently associated with the figure of the male detective, in opposition to the stereotypically irrational, feminine mind. This binary underpins gender roles in Victorian sensation and detective novels, which both reinforce and trouble the simple vision of gender that these stereotypes imply. This dissertation examines and contextualizes the figure of the detective with its binary gender associations and the attempts it makes to negotiate and challenge the implicit tensions of contemporary gender roles. This dissertation is a study of Late Woodland period (A.D. 400--1100) subsistence and mobility patterns in the Mobile-Tensaw delta of Alabama. My goal was to learn how prehistoric people used this unique central Gulf Coast estuary. Assessing the role of similar environments in settlement models was impossible as basic data---what people ate and how they distributed themselves across the landscape---were unavailable In 1998 and 1999 I excavated six sites. Four are on natural levees in the deltaic lowlands and two are on the adjacent upland bluffs. All six were occupied in the summer and fall. P

Abstract:
Because of the variation in the temperature of maximum density with depth, it is known that the upper (above 200m) and lower water columns circulate separately in deep temperate lakes. While near surface water overturns twice per year, the deep waters often mix only partially during a complete annual cycle. It is believed that deep convection is triggered by storm surge forcing some of the relatively cold upper water column downwards through its compensation depth, so that it becomes unstable and sinks The scale and intensity of the resulting deep water forming plumes are studied numerically.

The shift from the use of French faience and continental European coarse earthenwares to the use of Anglo-American (primarily British manufactured) ceramic types in Spanish colonial southeastern Louisiana is examined. Comparative archaeological data and probate records were used to further refine the chronology. The results were then synthesized with the historic record to e

The community is a socially constituted unit based on a shared identity. Individuals create the shared identity from practices and abstract notions that are reinforced in localized communities by daily interaction and common concerns.
