Abstract:
In a recent article I observed that Livy sees a dialectic at work in Roman history over the course of the reigns of the first four kings. The first king, Romulus, is associated with physical (i.e. military) strength and is devoted to war. His successor Numa is devoted to peace and to the advance of religion, law and the civilizing virtues. The Romulean thesis, having been answered by the Numan antithesis, reasserts itself in the reign of the third king, Tullus Hostilius. This time, devotion to war is even more intense: Tullus isferocior(1.22.2) than Romulus. Excessive devotion to war, however, entailed the neglect of other things: towards the end of his reign, during a plague to which he himself eventually fell victim, Tullus turned to religion, hoping that the gods would end the pestilence if he could balance his Romulean devotion to war with a Numan concern forsacra. But his efforts were too late and inept. It was not until the reign of the fourth king, Ancus Marcius, that a synthesis was achieved. Ancus had amedium ingeniumthat fused the Romulean and Numan tendencies. The adoption of theius fetialeby the Livian Ancus symbolizes this synthesis: theius fetialewas a martial (i.e. Romulean) ritual, but it also acknowledged the Numan claims of religion and right.

Klefbom, Helena. "Allemansrätten." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-168952.

Full text
Abstract:
The right of public access is a proposition for a fish market at Skeppsbron in Stockholm. The posed question to begin with has been; how to make this into a site that in numerous ways can relate to a wide range of people. Incorporated in this proposition is the old customhouse which is located on the site today. With the intention to be inspired by the old but without plagiarizing, the constructive elements and shapes can be recognised in the new supplement. Located in a way that makes it visible from Järntorget, the idea is to increase the movement of pedestrians between Old town and Skeppsbron. The new site holds a restaurant, a square, a marketplace and a sushi bar in an ambition to make this a place with activity all year around every hour of the day. Pedestrians are also given the opportunity to see for themselves the handling of fish from newly catched, to dinner on a plate. The restaurant serves one dish a day, based upon accessibility, not demand. The square itself offers places to sit down for anyone at anytime and aspires to remind us of the individual responsibility of our own consumption.

food is a part of the days we live. fish is a part of the city we live in. we meet at the table, at the counter, in the harbour. like we always have done, like we always will. the distances at skeppsbron are both small and large. the social scene and the harbours rawness are both a part of the character. skeppsbron has always been like that, and the traces are to be found in every cobblestone. through the cleanery, smokery and the bistro the guests take part of the whole process of the fish. from the uncensored cleaning, the preparation in the smokery to the cooked meal in the bistro. the customs house on the site are build in an functionalistic architectural tradition designed by paul hedqvist. the simple construction says something about the place, that we can learn from. by keeping the building all the layers of the place are kept. my building consists of two volumes - the cleanery and smokery. like the costums house they are varying in scale and interior materials. the guest should be able to read the process in the architecture. the cleanery’s naked concreteagainst the smokery’s tile covering, to the bistro’s warm plywood interior. my proposition investigates the time that was and the time that is, but above all the time that is yet to come. about the meetings at the table, at the counter and and in the harbour that has not happened. skeppsbron might be a place for that, again.

Abstract:
The starting point of the project has been to investigate how Blasieholmen’s public spaces can be improved, taking into account the criticism that stopped the Nobel Center. The three buildings at Blasieholmsudden (Tullhuset, North & South warehouse) have undergone many changes since port operations ended in 1942. To present the buildings accurately and to study the site carefully, a large part of the work has been dedicated to document and understand Blasieholmsudden through photography, sketches, and measurements.

Abstract:
Here is the north, here is Stockholm swimming palaces and hovels. Tomas Tranströmer: Indoors is endless from For the Living and the Dead (1989) Skeppsbron is a Stockholm cityscape going through changes. With the refurbishment of Slussen in the works, a whole new future awaits the site. It is a place full of potential, but at the moment neglected and lacking character. The small number of people deliberately visiting Skeppsbron belies its historical importance as the main port and marketplace of Sweden. My project is an attempt to find the soul and essence of the place, using Tranströmers poetry and my own drawings as a starting point. Building on my findings I have added new programs and spatial connections to the site. The proposal includes a sequence gradually moving from conserving, to stripping down to altogether removing existing pavilions. My main aspirations have been improving accessibility, interconnecting and last but not least making way for people. I come down to the water too seldom. But here I am now, among large stones with peaceful backs. Stones which slowly migrated backwards up out of the waves. Tomas Tranströmer: Slow Music from Bells and Tracks (1966)

Abstract:
Aethlon Medical is developing an extracorporeal blood filter as a therapeutic device designed to remove viruses and toxins from the blood of patients. The Hemopurifier is a modified hollow-fiber plasmapheresis cartridge containing an affinity matrix in the extra capillary space. The matrix contains a high mannose specific lectin as the active capture agent. The flow configuration of the device is that of Starling flow. The filter is designed to clear viruses and toxins from blood, delaying illness so the patient’s immune system can fight off the virus. Results to date indicate the efficient removal of a variety of enveloped viruses including HIV, HCV and poxviruses with in vitro evidence indicating the ability to capture Dengue fever virus, measles, mumps, influenza, Ebola and Marburg. Possible additional targets include bioweapons such as smallpox and bacterial toxins. A schematic of the use of the filter in a therapeutic application is shown in figure 1. In order to optimize the design of such a filter, the fluid mechanics of the device is modeled analytically and investigated experimentally. Additional information can be found in Tullis et al. [1], Tullis et al. [2], and Duffin and Tullis [2].

Abstract:
The rapid and specific detection of fibrin monomers (fm) and fibrin degradation products (fdp) is of major importance in the laboratory diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. Most methods in use are either time-consuming, needing special techniques, or insensitive and poorly specific. Some time ago, Watanabe and Tullis described a simple and rapid, semiquantitative test to detect fm and fdp in plasma, based on the finding that ristocetin in low concentrations (1.0-1.5 mg/ml) can specifically precipitate fm and fdp. To 0.4 ml ACD plasma, 0.1 ml ristocetin (2.5 mg/ml) is added and vortexed. The mixture is then incubated for 30 min at 20°C and centrifuged at 50xg for 5 min. The test is considered to be positive when fibrin-like strands or small or large pellets are observed on the bottom of the tube. More recently, Pfliegler et al. reported that ristomycin (AGGRISTIN), a structural analogue of ristocetin, can replace ristocetin in this test. Here we report on further results with the ristomycin (AGGRISTIN) precipitation test in 138 patients with various intravascular thrombotic events. The results of this test, performed on ACD plasma, were compared to the serum fdp values detected by immunoelectrophoresis (IEF) and by the haemagglutina-tion inhibition test (HIT). In all 30 cases with serum fdp above 30 ug/ml (HIT) or 28 pg/ml (IEF), the precipitation test was positive; at lower fdp concentrations, as detected by HIT or IEF, the test still was positive in 70 per cent of these thrombosis patients, suggesting a superior sensitivity. In 16 patients with elevated fibrinogen levels (but no evidence of thrombosis), the test was positive in only 3. No false positive results were detected in 16 healthy controls. Preliminary results show that the minor disadvantage of the test (blood collection on acid citrate dextrose) may readily be overcome by the in vitro adjustment of the pH of citrate plasma, commonly used for other haemostatic tests, to between 7.0 and 7.4.On the basis of our results we suggest that the AGGRISTIN (ristomycin) precipitation test is a simple, rapid and reliable method for the laboratory diagnosis of intravascular clotting.

Abstract:
In order to improve pipes and valves maintenance in EDF power plants by the use of reliability analysis, some wear mechanisms have been listed and their wear kinetics have been investigated. One of these wear mechanisms is cavitation erosion. Cavitation may occur in numerous pipe components such as valves, orifices, elbows and tees, in any place where low pressure and/or high velocity is reached. The effects of cavitation developments are first noise and vibrations, then erosion of the downstream pipe if the material is not resistant enough and at least loss of performance of the component (choking). A predictive model to evaluate cavitation erosion in valves and pipes was proposed in 1998 by Lecoffre [4]. Experiments on a closed cavitation test loop for the simple geometry of two sharp-edge single hole orifices (opening factor β = d/D = 0.4 and β = d/D = 0.8) have been performed in order to validate this model. First, the cavitation developments downstream the orifice have been visualized through a transparent pipe section. Incipient and chocking pressure coefficient have been recorded and compared with data from Tullis [2]. Then the erosion has been quantified using pitting measurements on mirror polished 316L stainless steel samples, located flush on the inner pipe surface. Cavitation pits have been measured using a laser profilometer. The plastic deformation volume measurement allows to define a pitting velocity, which can be related to a « loss of thickness » velocity, taking into account previous erosion tests on the pipe material. These pitting tests were performed for five flow conditions, characterized by three flow rate values and three pressure coefficient values. In the predictive model, these flow conditions parameters are more precisely defined by the flow velocity in the contracted section, named V1 (m/s), and by the pressure coefficient calculated with the lowest pressure in the contracted section, named σ1 (-). At least, a predictive model was adjusted using these experimental results. We found that the cavitation erosion wear velocity of a 316L stainless steel straight pipe downstream the orifice (characterized by its opening factor β) for the flow condition (σ1, V1) with cavitation σ1<1 fits well to the following formula: Verosion=k.(1−σ1)6.8.(V1−V0)5 with : k = f(β), V0 = g(β) where f and g are functions of the opening factor β = d/D. Tests using the same methodology have since been performed on butterfly valves and on multiholes orifices.
