Full textThe right of public access is a proposition for a fish market at Skeppsbron in Stockholm. The posed question to begin with has been; how to make this into a site that in numerous ways can relate to a wide range of people. Incorporated in this proposition is the old customhouse which is located on the site today. With the intention to be inspired by the old but without plagiarizing, the constructive elements and shapes can be recognised in the new supplement. Located in a way that makes it visible from Järntorget, the idea is to increase the movement of pedestrians between Old town and Skeppsbron. The new site holds a restaurant, a square, a marketplace and a sushi bar in an ambition to make this a place with activity all year around every hour of the day. Pedestrians are also given the opportunity to see for themselves the handling of fish from newly catched, to dinner on a plate. The restaurant serves one dish a day, based upon accessibility, not demand. The square itself offers places to sit down for anyone at anytime and aspires to remind us of the individual responsibility of our own consumption.

Full textfood is a part of the days we live. fish is a part of the city we live in. we meet at the table, at the counter, in the harbour. like we always have done, like we always will. the distances at skeppsbron are both small and large. the social scene and the harbours rawness are both a part of the character. skeppsbron has always been like that, and the traces are to be found in every cobblestone. through the cleanery, smokery and the bistro the guests take part of the whole process of the fish. from the uncensored cleaning, the preparation in the smokery to the cooked meal in the bistro. the customs house on the site are build in an functionalistic architectural tradition designed by paul hedqvist. the simple construction says something about the place, that we can learn from. by keeping the building all the layers of the place are kept. my building consists of two volumes - the cleanery and smokery. like the costums house they are varying in scale and interior materials. the guest should be able to read the process in the architecture. the cleanery’s naked concreteagainst the smokery’s tile covering, to the bistro’s warm plywood interior. my proposition investigates the time that was and the time that is, but above all the time that is yet to come. about the meetings at the table, at the counter and and in the harbour that has not happened. skeppsbron might be a place for that, again.

Full textHere is the north, here is Stockholm swimming palaces and hovels. Tomas Tranströmer: Indoors is endless from For the Living and the Dead (1989) Skeppsbron is a Stockholm cityscape going through changes. With the refurbishment of Slussen in the works, a whole new future awaits the site. It is a place full of potential, but at the moment neglected and lacking character. The small number of people deliberately visiting Skeppsbron belies its historical importance as the main port and marketplace of Sweden. My project is an attempt to find the soul and essence of the place, using Tranströmers poetry and my own drawings as a starting point. Building on my findings I have added new programs and spatial connections to the site. The proposal includes a sequence gradually moving from conserving, to stripping down to altogether removing existing pavilions. My main aspirations have been improving accessibility, interconnecting and last but not least making way for people. I come down to the water too seldom. But here I am now, among large stones with peaceful backs. Stones which slowly migrated backwards up out of the waves. Tomas Tranströmer: Slow Music from Bells and Tracks (1966)
