Abstract:
In a recent article I observed that Livy sees a dialectic at work in Roman history over the course of the reigns of the first four kings. The first king, Romulus, is associated with physical (i.e. military) strength and is devoted to war. His successor Numa is devoted to peace and to the advance of religion, law and the civilizing virtues. The Romulean thesis, having been answered by the Numan antithesis, reasserts itself in the reign of the third king, Tullus Hostilius. This time, devotion to war is even more intense: Tullus isferocior(1.22.2) than Romulus. Excessive devotion to war, however, entailed the neglect of other things: towards the end of his reign, during a plague to which he himself eventually fell victim, Tullus turned to religion, hoping that the gods would end the pestilence if he could balance his Romulean devotion to war with a Numan concern forsacra. But his efforts were too late and inept. It was not until the reign of the fourth king, Ancus Marcius, that a synthesis was achieved. Ancus had amedium ingeniumthat fused the Romulean and Numan tendencies. The adoption of theius fetialeby the Livian Ancus symbolizes this synthesis: theius fetialewas a martial (i.e. Romulean) ritual, but it also acknowledged the Numan claims of religion and right.

Abstract:
This article covers the role of Ancient Roman statesman and intellectual Marcus Tullius Cicero in the culture of the United States of America during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly his influence on the formation of democracy in the US. While the recent decades have witnessed the increasing scholarly attention to the impact of Cicero on the early political culture of the US, the body of historical research, especially the Ukrainian one, lacks general analyses of Cicero’s role in the American political system during the emergence of the American state and its existence on the early stages of its history. After a general overview of the historical context of Cicero’s biography and legacy, this article pays a particular attention to his impact on the creation of United States democracy. A significant number of Cicero’s ideas, more or less, had been reflected in the concepts which defined the newly created American democracy. The most important concepts in this regard are the ideas of a republic government, private property, just laws, and forms of state structure. Apart from the general importance of Cicero’s ideas for the early American democracy, Marcus Tullius Cicero himself was a notable example for some Founding Fathers of the US, especially for the 2nd President John Adams. During the 19th century, Cicero continued to play a significant role in the American society, specially in the fields of education and public speaking.

This paper presents a comparison of experimental results with predictions obtained from Tullis' (1984) model of search times for tabular displays. Three levels of information density for displays with and without highlighting were used in a series of experiments. The highlighting of information was done by adding graphic boundaries (lines). Two levels of highlighting were used. A question-answer type of visual search was performed for two different tasks. The search time results are discussed and a method for utilizing Tullis' model for highlighted displays is suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay makes the case that Livy's version of the tale of Mettius Fufetius transmits certain facts that relate to inherited ritual practices (horse-sacrifice among them) along with formulas used in early law and diplomacy. Although the author may not be fully aware of the original meaning of all he is handing down (e.g., the etymology of mitis) because he has simply taken materials from his sources without much critical investigation, the traditional elements are important to him because they seem to authenticate this legend about the reign of Tullus Hostilius. For the moralizing historian that Livy certainly is, the treason of Mettius Fufetius and his execution at the command of the Roman king comprise the starting point of a remarkable sequence of episodes in his narrative that demonstrate the dishonorable behavior of Rome's chief rivals in Italy. The legend of Mettius Fufetius thus embodies a kind of ““original sin”” in the political realm, and becomes the paradigm for Rome's harsh dealing with faithless allies over the next five centuries. The essay concludes that this story typifies many Roman fabulae, insofar as they were often composed on the basis of outdated or unfamiliar idionyms, toponyms, ceremonial words and phrases, and ancient legal terms. In such fabulae characters like Tullus Hostilius and Mettius Fufetius, perhaps mere names in annals and king-lists, become the performers whose ceremonial acts turn into the foundational moments of Rome's public life.

Abstract:
Abstract M. Tullius Cicero is one of the most prominent figures of ancient rhetoric. His rhetorical speeches are characterized first and foremost by outspokenness and offensiveness and they do not lack in temper either. Since he also dealt with rhetorical theory, Cicero was fully aware of the fact that not only the uttered words and revealed facts hold significance in a rhetorical speech but also concealment and omissions. The latter rhetorical techniques are used mainly in his ad personam attacks. An eloquent example of this is his invective against Piso which I would like to present in more detail.

Agaricus vittadinii Moretti (1826a: 66) is a striking species traditionally ascribed to the genus Amanita Pers. (1797: 65) (Bas 1969; Traverso 1998; Neville & Poumarat 2004). Amanita is one of the most widespread, species-rich ectomycorrhizal genera (Yang 1997; Yang et al. 1999; Neville & Poumarat 2004; Tulloss 2000; Kirk et al. 2008; Tulloss & Yang 2015), characterized by usually agaricoid basidiomata (including sequestrate forms) with a pallid spore print, a hemiangiocarpic schizohymenial development, presence of both universal and partial veils, and usually white and free lamellae (Bas 1969; Neville & Poumarat 2004; Justo et al. 2010). Microscopically, diagnostic characters are amyloid or inamyloid spores, bilateral hymenophoral trama and longitudinally acrophysalidic stipe tissue, which consists of clavate, usually terminal elements, longitudinally oriented on a diffuse system of narrow, branching hyphae (Corner & Bas 1962; Bas 1969; Jenkins 1986; Yang 1997, 2005; Traverso 1998; Neville & Poumarat 2004).

Abstract:
The article analyses which works of Marcus Tullius Cicero are mentioned and (or) quoted in the textbook on the rhetoric of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy “Orator Mohileanus” (1636) by Joseph Kononovich-Gorbatsky. The Ukrainian teacher prefers the speeches of the Roman orator. 49 speeches of Cicero are mentioned or quoted 228 times (16 legal speeches — 148 times, 33 political speeches — 80 times). There are three cases of special attention to Cicero’s speeches: their chronology is presented; the technique of confirmation is analysed on the example of “In Defense of Archias the Poet” and common places are collected for imitation. Among Cicero’s treatises on oratory, the most popular are “Rhetorica ad Herennium” (as Joseph Kononovich-Gorbatsky means, authored by Cicero) and “About the Subdivisions of Oratory”. In total, seven rhetorical treatises are mentioned or cited 101 times. A special role is given to “About the Subdivisions of Oratory”. The structure of the first treatise clearly repeats the composition of the work of the Roman classic, the titles of the sections are duplicated, parallels are constantly drawn. Unlike other rhetorical works, Cicero’s “About the Subdivisions of Oratory” are quoted in Ukrainian rhetoric in large fragments. Six Tullius’s philosophical works are sporadically (12 times) presented in Ukrainian rhetoric; Cicero’s letters — three times only.

Abstract In his commentary on Cicero,De inventione, Grillius gives Cicero'spro Tullio as an example of the genus obscurum causae and identifies the occultatio negotii as the distinction of this type of exordium. This article argues that the occultatio negotii is an ironic form ofdissimulatio, by which the orator hides the real object of the debate and clouds the issue, drawing the attention of the judges to points not directly connected with it. This oratorical tactic is used by Cicero in thepro Tullio. Avoiding the real issue (the clash between Tullius' and Fabius' slaves), the orator focuses on a juridical problem (the meaning ofdolus malus) and appears as a defender of thevoluntas legis, opposing the (supposed) legal formalism of the antagonist.
