Abstract:
In the former South Kanara or south coastal Karnataka region, the presence of overlapping languages, mainly Tulu and Kannada, posed prolonged dilemmas in the nineteenth century for the Basel Mission. The choice of language was important for their evangelical work, supported by important language-related activities such as dictionary making, grammar writing and translations. Since language use was intertwined with caste hierarchy, this raised issues over the position of lower castes, mainly Billavas, for the native elites and upper castes. This article argues that the prioritisation of Kannada, and relegation of Tulu to a secondary position, was an outcome not only of missionary perceptions of the larger Kannada context, but also more importantly can be traced back to elite representations regarding the subaltern Tulu culture and lifeworld. As missionary intervention in education and native language use challenged the status quo of social hierarchy among local communities, this sparked efforts by the native elites to reclaim and restore the earlier hierarchy. In the process, the native elite representations of Tulu language and culture became at the same time an effort at dismissal and appropriation.

Abstract:
Various speech metrics have been developed to assess and monitor phonological development in young children. Process Density Index (PDI) is one such measure employed to determine the severity of phonological errors and speech intelligibility. The present study explored the utility of PDI as a measure of phonological development in 756 Tulu-speaking children between 3;0–7;0 years, across age and gender groups. Results revealed that the youngest group of children exhibited a higher number of phonological processes and a higher PDI score as compared to the oldest group. Children with higher PDI scores exhibited poorer speech intelligibility than those with lower PDI Scores. Further, a statistically significant gender difference with boys exhibiting higher PDI scores than girls with no interaction between age and gender was noted. The study finding provides an insight into the phonological aspects specific to Tulu language and suggests the utility of PDI as a potential clinical measure while assessing phonological issues.

Events containing private affairs are confrains as ‘Agam and War, Valour, Pride and charity forms the ‘Puram’. Tamil Grammar is divided into Agapporul and Purapporul. Literary works based on Purapporal focused on the events based on outer lifestyle of the people. Purapporul can be identified as Seven and Twelve. Vetchithinai is defined as the capturing of cows and cattle breeds. The formation or the beginning of the Vetchithinai is because of the competition between the other two thinais like ‘Palai’ and ‘Mullai’. We can assumed that Vetchithinai is formed based on this competition. This research article clearly shows the difference between the Vetchithinai which is portrayed in Tholkappiam and the Vetchithinai which is portrayed in Purapporal Venbamalai and its developments in that thinai.

Abstract:
Linguists claim that “Tamil” is the most ancient of the languages spoken in the world, and it is language that introduces a group of people to the world. It is accepted by the majority that the race referred to by the word Dravidian refers to the group of people who speak the languages of present-day Andhra, Kannada, Malayalam, Tulu and Tamil. EVR Periyar became the leader after the Neethi Katchi became a secular non-brahmin movement under the leadership of PD Thiarayar and TM Nair. After that he started the magazines such as Viduthalai, Kudiyarasu etc. This movement grew out of the print media and was launched in 1944 by the Dravidar movement. Primary Dravidian ideological principles such as abolition of caste, abolition of superstition, abolition of Brahminism and women's rights were focused on. These are also promoted by the Dravidian followers through the visual media and the film industry. This article deals with how the ideological principles of the ancient Dravidian race were revived by the Tamil cinema.

Abstract:
AbstractThe preschool period is marked by the development of several domains such as communication, cognition, social skills, and literacy skills. As language and literacy skills overlap during the preschool period, it is important to understand the dynamics of language and literacy in early school years. Due to language diversity, India does not bear a single-language system, and often the language spoken at home may not be the same at school for curricular instructions. Therefore, the present study focuses on the influence of script in bi- or multilingual scenarios in India. More importantly, the home language may or may not have its specific script; thus, facilitating early literacy skills at home can be questionable. The study followed a cross-sectional study design. One hundred and forty participants were divided into two groups based on their native language (Malayalam and Tulu groups). Each group was further divided based on their age, younger and older groups. An early literacy checklist and a parent perception questionnaire were developed to assess the early literacy skills in second language (L2). The findings revealed a developmental trend in early literacy skills in children with the older group performing better than the younger group. The study results also shed light on this less researched domain of influence of native script on L2 learning in a linguistically diverse country like India. The study's findings emphasize the parental understanding of the importance of home literacy–based activities for children and evaluation of early literacy skills which will help in early identification and treatment.

Abstract:
BackgroundExposure to smoking in films causes smoking uptake among adolescents. Investigation of the extent to which tobacco imagery appears, or tobacco control laws are complied with in Indian films is limited, and especially so for films in regional languages. This study presents an analysis of tobacco content and compliance with tobacco control laws in popular films in several languages from the Karnataka state of India.MethodsWe used 5 min interval coding to measure actual tobacco use, implied tobacco use, tobacco paraphernalia and tobacco branding in the top 10 films identified from national box office ratings and regional distributor reports in Karnataka in 2015 and 2016. We also assessed compliance with tobacco-free film rules in India.FindingsA total of 47 films, in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Tulu languages were coded. Any tobacco imagery was observed in 72% of films, and actual tobacco use in 50%. Tobacco imagery was equally prevalent in films classified as suitable for universal viewing (U category) or at age 12 or more (U/A category) films; and significantly more common in films made in regional than national language (Hindi). None of the films were fully compliant with legal requirements on health spots, audiovisual disclaimers and health warnings.ConclusionsTobacco content was common in films classified as suitable for viewing by children, more among regional than national languages. Compliance with tobacco control laws was low. Stricter enforcement of tobacco-free film rules will protect children and adolescents from exposure to tobacco use on screen.

Variations of language that exist in society are systematic but not random, as what can be seen from Toba and Simalungun languages (TSL). This research was qualitative since it only collected and described TSL’s language variation and phoneme distribution. Data was taken from interview. The results show that vowel assimilation can be seen from TSL’s words horbo vs horbou, eme vs omei, and mate vs matei. Consonant assimilation exists in TSL’s combination, such as, baba vs babah, tubu vs tubuh, mangolu vs manggolu, manjolom vs manggolam, biang vs baliang, and unang vs ulang in which consonants /h/, /g/. /gg/, and /al/, and /l/ are found. Ellipsis appearing in /o/-/u/, /e/-/i/, /h/, /e/-/ui/, /b/-/l/ in Toba’s words such as horbo, eme, eta, marlange, and bagak can be found in Simalungun’s horbou, emei, heta, marlangui, and lagak. With reference to phoneme shift, several shifts in Toba’s consonant, such as, /rs/, /j/, and /e/ in words, such as marsuan, manjolam, and marlange have become /n/, /gg/, and /ui/ in words for example manuan, manggolam, and marlangui in Simalungun. Abstract:
Indonesia is an archipelagic nation consisting of diverse ethnicities and languages in southeast Asia. As in all nations, one of the linguistic communities found across the islands is made up of Deaf people. The limited research available about these Deaf Indonesians tends to focus on the linguistics of their language, BISINDO. However, almost nothing is known about their cultural traditions except studies about a Deaf Village in Bali. Currently, there are ongoing discussions among Deaf Indonesian communities in Java about Deaf identity. Most of these Deaf members espouse a cultural view of what it means to be Deaf. The argument centers on what is the correct term for a person who is deaf; one side of the argument is that Deaf people have a cultural identity, expressed as tuli (Deaf) while the other side maintains a medical view, expressed as tuna rungu (hearing impaired). These Indonesian Deaf perspectives are shared and documented for potential future research.

Abstract:
This work studies the vocabulary of outerwear in two related Turkic languages – Tatar and Chuvash. These two languages of neighboring peoples closely interact, which leads to their interpenetration, including the linguistic elements. In the article, Tatar and Chuvash lexemes, included in the thematic group “outerwear”, are analyzed in a comparative aspect. The words are considered in historical and etymological terms. The work provides examples from other Turkic languages and investigates the borrowing of these words into the Russian language. The article concludes that the stem of lexemes expressing the meaning of outerwear is made up of common Turkic words such as chikmen, tolyp, kurk, chapan, ermek, tun, bishmet, etc., although researchers believe some of them to be borrowings from other languages. Some of the words were borrowed into the Chuvash language from Tatar: sapan, kamsul, beshmet, etc. The etymology of such foreign words as kamsul is generally believed to come from Italian through Russian, zybyn, choba from Arabic, etc. Some names of outerwear were adopted into the Russian language from Turkic languages: beshmet, azyam, armyak, chekmen, epancha, kaftan, tulup, chapan, etc. The fact that the origin of many words is determined by scientists in different ways makes their study more complicated.

Abstract:
The study of regional languages is a critical component of a nation's cultural and linguistic heritage. As such, it is imperative to conduct in-depth research into the meanings and nuances of regional languages. In this study, the Bima language (ngahi mbojo), which belongs to the Bima-Sumba language family and is widely spoken in the Bima and Dompu districts, was examined to map and explicate verbs with the concept of 'lean'. To gather the necessary data, oral and written sources were used, including storybooks in the Bima language. The research methodology utilized a combination of interviews and literature review, while the verification method was employed to collect and analyze the data. The method, which involves the alteration of form and the use of paraphrasing techniques, was utilized to determine the original meaning of the verb and its explication, resulting in 65 points of analysis. The study revealed that Bima language verbs with 'lean' can be mapped to entities, processes, tools, and results. Specifically, the lexicon used to express the concept of 'leaning' includes maru (sleeping), santengi (leaning), doho (sitting), oko (squatting), kidi (standing), and tu'u (getting up).

This linguistic interweaving occurs, consciously or unconsciously, but the understanding of linguistic interaction is always on the front burner. The contribution shows some possibilities of the encounter of different languages and the consequences of these contacts. One of the processes in which the languages are merging is called code-switching. On concrete examples in written language, coexisting elements of spoken language are shown. The aim of the article is, however, to observe the written language and its tendency to either conceptual verbal or written form of language and to present three types of written texts and how code-switching in this field of communication works. Abstract:
Sign language, which is the main means of communication for the deaf, has many different variations in each region. As a diversity of languages and cultural identities for people with hearing impairment, regional languages also need to be preserved. Bandung as a city that has the highest type of deaf out of all persons with disabilities in it, has a large and active deaf community in introducing distinctive gestures. In fact, several studies have shown that the development of regional sign language led to the start of the construction of the first special school in the city of Bandung, but there has been no research on sign language in the Bandung area itself. The new media can help maintain the typical Bandung sign language to last longer so that it does not experience changes, transitions and language death. The digital dictionary was chosen to be a medium for documentation of Bandung sign language because it fits the needs of problems regarding language resistance. A digital operating system can be summarized in a single unit in the form of an application that can run on two types of devices, namely desktop and mobile. Referring to the design of a digital dictionary that functions as a tool, it requires usability flexibility, so that the application will be designed on mobile media (mobile apps). The design of the dictionary uses a visual aid in the form of 3-dimensional (3D) animation as a conveyer of the language you are looking for and what you want to know. So the purpose of the linguistic study of Bandung sign language is to be able to document the language in a digital dictionary in the form of a 3D animation display. This research uses the design thinking method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out directly in the Deaf community in the city of Bandung and will develop collectively in line with the findings of regional Bandung sign language. Keywords:sign, language, animation, dictionary, Bandung. Abstract:
This study documents and reflects the experience of Sign Language speakers in Yogyakarta. The reflection is then negotiated with the grand narrative of linguistic justice, which has been unwittingly narrated by the domination of knowledge viewed mainly in the perspective of the hearing. This study uses ethnographic methods focusing on a broad process of observation of the subject's experience. The findings of this study are: First, the experience of members of the Deaf community in promoting linguistic justice for Sign Language is a process of cultural relocation and hybridization. The dynamics that occur are related to the acceptance and rejection of Deaf culture in multicultural societies. Secondly, this study found a link between the process of marginalization of the Deaf culture and the intensity of power in inter-language relations.[Penelitian ini mendokumentasikan dan merefleksikan pengalaman penutur Bahasa Isyarat di Yogyakarta.

The center for Disability Services at UIN Sunan Kalijaga in collaboration with UIN Sunan Kalijaga Mosque provides sign interpreter service for the Deaf worshipers during the Friday sermon. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of sign language interpreters. Based on the analysis of three approaches and five measures of effectiveness, research shows that the Friday sermon interpretation program has not been effective. This is due to several factors, namely: the sitting position of the Deaf which determines the quality of visualization of sign language interpretation of khutbah material, the lack of language capability of sign language interpreters, the coordination is not done between the PLD and mosque management, the absence of material publications that facilitate the sign interpreter understand the material, lack of religious understanding of Deaf so that they ar less able to understand the sermon topic.[Pusat Layanan Difabel UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta bekerja sama dengan Laboratorium Agama Masjid UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta menyediakan layanan juru bahasa isyarat untuk jamaah Tuli pada saat khutbah Jumat.

Abstract. This study aims to find out how the process of selecting content in video making, challenges in the transliteration process from audio to sign language and communication patterns in disseminating to the target public of the videos which form of Indonesian songs lipsync using sign language uploaded via @aulion Instagram account. Using qualitative approach to the case study method and the concept of symbolic interactionism by George Herbert Mead. The result of this research indicate that the content selection process begins with the thought process where the whole social (society) precedes the individual mind, then the process of adjusting behavior as a form of understanding and interpreting the process, and the process of selecting songs as educa-tional media for sign language. The researcher divides the challenge of transliteration process into two types, namely internal and external challenges. Communication patterns used include the use of social media and direct (face-to-face) social interaction. The conclusion that can be taken is that the process of transliteration activities is preceded by social conditions in the community that give rise to the process of thinking to someone, where the aspects of mind, self, and society are related to one another as explained by George Herbert Mead in the concept of symbolic interac-tionism. However, these activities will be better if done regularly to maintain the interest of the community to learn sign language Abstrak.

Abstract:
At Tulum, as well as other Maya sites in the Yucatan Peninsula, mural painting traditions are related to the style and symbol-set associated with Central Mexican manuscript cultures. The murals reflect the widespread Postclassic Mesoamerican manuscript cultures lourishing from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries AD, during which iconic and logosyllabic scripts were used in the construction of regionally distinct manuscript forms. The murals at Tulum relate to manuscript culture not only in their style and symbol set, but also in their use of metaphorical dualisms, in which significant iconic elements are contrasted as an indicator of a more abstract concept. Recognizing metaphorical juxtaposition as an underlying principle of Mesoamerican ritual language, this paper discusses the process by which manuscripts become monuments and considers the sacred metaphors painted on the temples of Tulum as mechanisms for reinforcing political power.

Deaf students need special treatment for gaining communication skills. Regarding this problem, there has been a new method called Maternal Reflective Method (also known as MRM) that encourages the deaf students to speak using their articulation organs simultaneously with the Indonesian Sign Language. This study aims to discover how nonverbal communication, including touch, body movement, and paralanguage are implemented in a teaching-learning discourse in the kindergarten classroom for the deaf children. The method used by the teacher in delivering the teaching material is the main focus to see the variation of pedagogic multimodal resources. The modes found are also scrutinized due to their communicative implication nature; in regard to Jakobson’s framework on the language functions: referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalingual, and poetic. The results indicate that most of the time the teacher uses multimodal resources for commanding, prohibiting, and inviting the students in relation to the conative function of language.[Siswa Tuli membutuhkan penanganan khusus dalam mendapatkan kemampuan komunikasi. Abstract:
The paper describes the phonology and nominal morphology of KItʊlε, an Adamawa language of the Tula-Waja group, spoken in East-Central Nigeria. KItʊlε has a restricted consonant inventory, marked by a loss of voicing contrast in most consonants. It has a system of ATR vowel harmony, which has begun to erode in many lexical items. There are three level tones plus rising and falling glides. The underlying system of nominal number marking is suffix alternation as with the other languages in the group, but this has undergone numerous alterations, in part due to the addition of prefix alterations, and fossilised suffixes which have been incorporated into the stem. Some of these then appear as infixes, although this is not the underlying system. A note on demonstratives is appended, which shows that these are not directly concordial, but which have a broad semantic logic.
