Abstract:

The Pt-W(lOO) system has been studied using Auger spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron diffraction. Several different regimes were discerned and characterized; a pseudomorphic first Pt layer, distorted hexagonal Pt overlayers, 3D Pt microcrystallites and alloy films. XPS indicated electron transfer from Pt to W at the W/Pt interface and in the alloy layers. Surface Pt inhibits the dissociative chemisorption of CO via an ensemble effect resulting in enhanced molecular adsorption. Today fuel cells are far from being common place in the commercial market, primarily due to their high cost. The cost of such a system is largely determined by the platinum based catalysts used at both the anode and cathode of the fuel cell. In the present thesis structure, morphology, chemical and electronic properties of the Pt - Au/tungsten oxide model system were investigated by means of RHEED, AFM and PES. The epitaxial tungsten oxide thin films were prepared by oxidation of W(110) single-crystal surface using a RF oxygen plasma source followed by thermal annealing. Gold and Platinum were deposited "in-situ" by evaporation.
