Full textThe aim was to calculate melting temperatures of Ta-W binary alloys. Firstly we calculated equilibrium properties (equations of state, elastic constants, formation energies) at 0 K for pure metals and Ta1-xWx intermetallic compounds, in the framework of DFT by using pseudopotentials. These ab initio data were used to fit a MEAM-2NN potential to represent the interactions between tantalum and tungsten atoms in Ta-W alloys. The obtained cross-potential was then used in molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the melting temperatures of Ta-W alloys. The melting temperature predicted for tantalum by the fitted potential agree with the experimental value. But for tungsten the results disagree strongly with the experiment: the predicted melting temperature is over estimated by 1000 K. It induces an error in the prediction of melting temperatures for Ta-W alloys. Our attempts to improve the MEAM potential for tungsten have only permitted to reduce the difference by 200 K

Full textElaboration of glass (fusion and working) is clone at very high temperatures. The refractory materials used in the corresponding industrial processes must satisfy three essential criteria (good resistance to corrosion by glass melts and to HT. Oxidation by air, good mechanical properties). Since some process temperature can exceed 1300°C, Ni or Co base alloys cannot be used in such cases. We have thus focused our study on chromia forming Mo and W base alloys (these two metals being known for their resistance to molten glass and their good mechanical properties at high temperature, chromia being very resistant to molten glass). The melting temperatures of the components are very different. Elaboration by melting techniques cannot be used; all syntheses have thug been clone by sintering of metallic powders, with palladium as an activating agent. The study of the mechanical properties and of the resistance to oxidation resistance of these alloys bas concerned a wide range of compositions. It was shown that the mechanical properties and the oxidation behaviour are closely related to the characteristics of diffusion in the alloys. Part of this work was thus devoted to the determination of the Cr-Mo-W temary phase diagram and to the diffusion coefficients of the elements. The study of the MoW base alloys oxidation properties bas evidenced the beneficial effect of a chromia dispersion in the alloy. By extension, this result led us to study new ODS Ni base alloy (MA758 type) with an original alloy concept ( "Bi-ODS" alloy containing two oxide dispersions), the behaviour of which is significantly improved as regards H. Full textNew well-defined catalyst precursors for alkane metathesis have been prepared based on tantalum and tungsten complexes supported on oxide supports. In the case of Ta, the introduction of π-donor ligands such as Cp* or Cl is detrimental to catalysis, and the presence of Lewis acid centres at the surface of the support (silica-alumina or alumina) does not bring significant changes. In the case of W, the support is very important : for instance, no activity is found for [W(≡CtBu)(CH2tBu)3] supported on SiO2, while [W(≡CtBu)(CH2tBu)3] supported on SiO2-Al2O3 and Al2O3 show similar activities to those observed for their Ta analogues supported on the same oxides. Moreover, while H2 treatment induces sintering when W is supported on silica, supporting on silica-alumina and alumina allows tungsten hydrides to be obtained. These complexes show improved activities in alkane (propane) metathesis (140 TON). Finally, we show that the key steps of metathesis of alkane probably provide from the key steps of olefin metathesis, in which the cleavage and formation of C-C bonds of alkane come from to a common metallacyclobutane intermediate

Full textTantalum is a metal with a good corrosion resistance. However, tantalum pyrochemical crucibles are damaged by the molten metals they contain, especially by diffusion at the tantalum grain boundaries. A solution is to carburize the crucibles. During carburizing, two carbides are formed: TaCx and Ta2Cx in the form of two homogeneous surface layers. During cooling, a layer of Ta2Cx precipitates is also formed. In this study, the low pressure carburizing process is applied to the TaW2.5% alloy (Ta97.5wt.%-W2.5wt.%). The aim is to benefit from the advantages of tungsten addition: limitation of the grain growth during the treatment and an increase of the carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries. However, these carbides differ from those of pure tantalum by their nature and their morphology (lamellar layer).A CALPHAD study was performed to obtain a thermodynamic database and thus improve the understanding of MC and M2C carbide formation (with M=Ta,W). In addition, EBSD analyzes have shown the crystallographic relationships {110}Ta//{0001}Ta2Cx and {111}TaCx//{0001}Ta2Cx.Finally, the layer growth kinetics were studied according to the different parameters (duration of carburizing and diffusion, temperature, surface state and microstructural state). This study thus made possible to obtain different phases on the surface of crucibles: MC, M2C or TaW + M2C precipitates. Then, these surface microstructures were evaluated against attack by liquid metals (Al, Bi) and salts (CaCl2)

Full textThe aim of this thesis concerns the synthesis of nanostructured tungsten and tungsten alloys, related to the thermonuclear fusion issue, with a double perspective, one concerning the powders themselves,in order to simulate the dust that will be produced during the tokamak operation, the other concerning bulk materials, where the nanostructure could bring a significant improvement on mechanical properties (elastic limit, ductility), and also on specific properties related to this operating environment (resistance to sputtering, blistering, corrosion, ...).To do so, we synthesized tungsten and binary and ternary alloys in the W-V-Cr system using Selfpropagating High-temperature Synthesis. These powders were then sintered using Spark Plasma Sintering, in order to retrieve bulk dense samples. At each step of the process, the materials were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, microhardness and compression tests. Our results show that we were able to obtain bulk nanostructured samples, with a relative density ranging from 97 to 100% depending on the alloy, with an elastic limit of up to 1000 MPa and a ductility of about 30%, which is a very promising results for a tungsten alloy with no rhenium

Full textWith the reduction of CMOS devices dimensions, we have to change the conventional CMOS gate poly-silicion/SiO2 by inserting a well chosen metal layer between poly-silicon and gate dielectric. Metals proposed here are tungsten and tungsten nitride. However, the integration of tungsten alloy in poly-silicon/TiN/W (WN)/high-k gate stack requires new dry etch approaches. This work focuses on plasma etching of W and WN embedded in metal gate stack. In a first part, we characterized both metals, as deposited and integrated in the metal gate stack. Differences between both metal gate stacks lead to the development of two gate etch strategies. Cl2/O2 and Cl2/O2/NF3 are the proposed solutions to control respectively, the profile of WN and W, without damaging the whole metal gate profile and the dielectric layer. In a second part, we focused on deep understanding of mechanisms during W and WN etching in Cl2/O2 based plasmas. More specifically, we have investigated plasma/surface interactions, plasma gas phase composition and chemical nature of the layers that deposit on feature sidewalls and on the reactor walls during the process

Full textHP alloys are typically used as steam methane reforming tubes in the petrochemical industry. During service, they are exposed to temperatures between 700°C and 1000°C under gaz pressure of several MPa. Their as-cast microstructure, together with fine in-situ secondary precipitation, provide these alloys with an excellent resistance to creep deformation. Nevertheless, after long-time ageing, coarsening of secondary carbides leads to the weakening of the tubes and therefore to an accelerated damaging. The effects of some alloying elements (V, Ti/W) on secondary precipitation of M23C6 and NbC carbides were investigated through numerical simulations performed with TC-PRISMA software. On the basis of encouraging results in terms of precipitation optimization, two model HP-type alloys were cast at the laboratory and aged in the range of temperatures corresponding to service conditions. As-cast microstructures were first compared with an industrial "standard" alloy. Then, secondary precipitation were characterized for all the alloys and all ageing temperatures. Microstructural investigation highlighted the beneficial effect of vanadium and titanium/tungsten additions on secondary precipitation characteristics

Full textThis thesis is focused on the reactive sputter deposition of W-O thin films. In order to play with their composition, the Reactive Gas Pulsing Process (RGPP) is implemented and allows tunable oxygen and tungsten concentrations. Similarly, the GLancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique is developed to produce various architectures, namely inclined columns, zigzags and spirals, and increases the surface-to-volume ratio of the films. The GLAD co-sputtering approach is also investigated by means of two inclined and separated W and WO3 targets. Relationships between microstructure, composition, electronic and optical properties of W-O films are systematically studied. They are finally applied as active layers for resistive sensors in order to improve detection of dodecane vapor and ozone gas. The high porous microstructure of inclined columns produced by GLAD combined to the suitable composition adjusted by RGPP leads to define a range of W-O films attractive for sensing performances

Full textAdhesion of a coating on its substrate is an important property for the use of coated materials. That is why many techniques were developed with the aim of determining this property. We use here the interfacial indentation test which makes it possible to adequately represent the rupture at the interface. One uses the load minimum necessary to create a crack at the interface to calculate the apparent toughness which represents the adhesion of the coating. ln this work, we study two coatings of NiCrSiFeBC and WC-10Co-4Cr deposited by HVOF on a steel substrate SAE 1045. The conditions of deposition are chosen to obtain various thicknesses of coating and two levels of roughness of the interface. We observed a complex mode of cracking around the indent since a network of secondary cracks appeared in the coating and along certain unmelted particles of the coating. To take into account the global mode of cracking, we introduce aIl the crack lengths into the calcuJation of the interfacial toughness. The results show that the influence of the roughness of the substrate led to various mechanical behaviors. Indeed, for the highest roughness, we obtained the best mechanical interlocking of the coating on the substrate. On another side, the thickness has apparently a weak influence on the toughness, in any case for the studied materials, this being probably related to the low level of residual stresses in the vicinity of the interfacial indent. ln conclusion, the indentation test shows once again its aptitude to study the adhesion of a coating/substrate couple
