This dissertation presents experimental research on speech errors in Tunisian Arabic (TA). The central empirical questions revolve around properties of `exchange errors'. These errors can mis-order lexical, morphological, or sound elements in a variety of patterns. TA's nonconcatenative morphology shows interesting interactions of phrasal and lexical constraints with morphological structure during language production and affords different and revealing error potentials linking the production system with linguistic knowledge.The dissertation studies expand and test generalizations based on Abd-El-Jawad and Abu-Salim's (1987) study of spontaneous speech errors in Jordanian Arabic by experimentally examining apparent regularities in data from real-time language processing perspective. The studies address alternative accounts of error phenomena that have figured prominently in accounts of production processing. Three experiments were designed and conducted based on an error elicitation paradigm used by Ferreira and Humphreys (2001). Experiment 1 tested within-phrase exchange errors focused on root versus non-root exchanges and lexical versus non-lexical outcomes for root and non-root errors. Experiments 2 and 3 addressed between-phrase exchange errors focused on violations of the Grammatical Category Constraint (GCC).The study of exchange potentials for the within-phrase items (experiment 1) contrasted lexical and non-lexical outcomes. The expectation was that these would include a significant number of root exchanges and that the lexical status of the resulting forms would not preclude error. Results show that root and vocalic pattern exchanges were very rare and that word forms rather than root forms were the dominant influence in the experimental performance. On the other hand, the study of exchange errors across phrasal boundaries of items that do or do not correspond in grammatical category (experiments 2 and 3) pursued two principal questions, one concerning the error rate and the second concerning the error elements. The expectation was that the errors predominantly come from grammatical category matches. That outcome would reinforce the interpretation that processing operations reflect the assignment of syntactically labeled elements to their location in phrasal structures. Results corroborated with the expectation. However, exchange errors involving words of different grammatical categories were also frequent. This has implications for speech monitoring models and the automaticity of the GCC.

The Tunisian Berber (or Shilha) vernaculars are among the least described Afroasiatic (Hamito-Semitic) languages to this day. Although they have been provisionally assigned to the North-Berber group within the Berber branch of Afroasiatic, their immediate affiliation remains an open question. The principal task of this present work is to describe the phonology, morphology and syntax of Douiret. Less central to the aims of the study is the analysis of the basic wordstores of the three surviving Shilha varieties which include Douiret, Chninni (or Chenini) and Ouirsighen (Jerba). The Shilha variety of Douiret is chosen for this study because it still retains some fundamental elements of Berber structure which are not very dissimilar to other Berber languages such as Kabyle and Tamazight. The research shows that Tunisian Berber still survives today, but its future remains uncertain in the face of the forces of urbanisation, economic migration and lack of government support all of which may contribute hypothetically to its likely death. This study will be pursued with reference to the social and cultural context of the Tunisian Berber vernaculars. Research on the nature of language contact bewtween Tunisian Arabic and Shilha is practically non-existent and in this study, is a secondary concern. The strong influence of the local Arabic superstratum on Shilha in phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis is also investigated, as well as the presence of Berber elements in the distinctive Arabic dialect of Tunisia. As the thesis title suggests, this study should not be taken as the last word on Berber in Tunisia. This thesis investigates the idea that the grammatical system of a language influences aspects of thought patterns and communicative behaviour. It examines the linguistic conceptualisation of motion events in English and Tunisian Arabic (TA) in order to contribute to current debates in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research and its associated field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The main research questions are whether in learning a typologically different language, the conceptualisation acquired through first languages (L1) interferes with the learning of the conceptualisation inherent in a second language (L2). In order to address these questions, I adopt three analytical frameworks: a grammatical framework based on Talmy's (1985, 2000) binary distinction between verb-framed and satellite-framed languages, a discourse framework based on Berman and Slobin's (1994) application of Talmy's typology to verbal behaviour; and a ‘Whorfian' framework based on Slobin's (1987, 1996b) Thinking-for-Speaking' (TfS) hypothesis. A fundamental claim of the TfS hypothesis is that the grammar of a language and the discourse preferences of its speakers play a fundamental role in shaping linguistic thinking. From this follows the prediction that L1-based conceptualisation resists change when a typologically different L2 is learnt in adulthood. A comparison of the TfS behaviours of speakers of L1-English (L1-Eng), L1-TA, and ‘advanced' L2-English (L2-Eng) whose L1 is TA support this prediction. Based on the notion of ‘motionisation' – a term I coin in order to describe a conceptual strategy L1 speakers of English use when TfS about events – I show that linguistic habits are not only decisive in how the same TfS content is expressed (e.g. run from the jar versus run out of the jar), but more importantly, it is decisive in situations where speakers are ‘forced' to pick out different aspects of the same reality for TfS purposes. The findings reported here have implications for L2 English learners, in general, and, in particular, for learners of English whose L1 may be characterised as a verb-framed language.

Les différents dialectes de la langue arabe (DA) présentent de grandes variations phonologiques, morphologiques, lexicales et syntaxiques par rapport à la langue Arabe Standard Moderne (MSA). Jusqu’à récemment, ces dialectes n’étaient présents que sous leurs formes orales et la plupart des ressources existantes pour la langue arabe se limite à l’Arabe Standard (MSA), conduisant à une abondance d’outils pour le traitement automatique de cette variété. Étant donné les différences significatives entre le MSA et les DA, les performances de ces outils s’écroulent lors du traitement des DA. Cette situation conduit à une augmentation notable de l’ambiguïté dans les approches computationnelles des DA. Les travaux décrits dans cette thèse s’inscrivent dans ce cadre à travers la modélisation de l’oral parlé dans les médias tunisiens. Cette source de données contient une quantité importante d’Alternance Codique (AC) entre la langue normative MSA et le dialecte parlé en Tunisie (DT). La présence de ce dernier d’une manière désordonnée dans le discours pose une sérieuse problématique pour le Traitement Automatique de Langue et fait de cet oral une langue peu dotée. Toutefois, les ressources nécessaires pour modéliser cet oral sont quasiment inexistantes. Ainsi, l’objectif de cette thèse consiste à pallier ce manque afin de construire un modèle de langage dédié à un système de reconnaissance automatique pour l’oral parlé dans les médias tunisiens. Pour ce fait, nous décrivons dans cette thèse une méthodologie de création de ressources et nous l’évaluons par rapport à une tâche de modélisation de langage. Les résultats obtenu sont encourageants<br>The different dialects of the arabic language have a large phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic variations when compared to the standard written arabic language called MSA (Modern Standard Arabic). Until recently, these dialects were presented only in their oral form and most of the existing resources for the Arabic language is limited to the Standard Arabic (MSA), leading to an abundance of tools for the automatic processing of this variety. Given the significant differences between the MSA and DA, the performance of these tools fall down when processing AD. This situation leads to a significant increase of the ambiguity in computational approaches of AD.This thesis is part of this framework by modeling the oral spoken in the Tunisian media. This data source contains a significant amount of Code Switching (CS) between the normative language MSA and the Dialect spoken in Tunisia (DT). The presence of the latter in a disorderly manner in the discourse poses a serious problem for NLP (Natural Language Processing) and makes this oral a less resourced language. However, the resources required to model this oral are almost nonexistent. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to fill this gap in order to build a language model dedicated to an automatic recognition system for the oral spoken in the Tunisian media. For this reason, we describe in this thesis a resource generation methodologyand we evaluate it relative to a language modeling task. The results obtained are encouraging

Cette thèse a pour objectif de faire la lumière sur l'acquisition d'une langue étrangère en autonomie par la télévision. Elle s'inscrit dans deux champs de recherche, celui de la didactique des langues et celui de la psychologie cognitive. Elle s'appuie sur l ' étude de spectateurs tunisiens qui ont acquis l'italien par la simple exposition à la chaîne italienne Rai Uno et sur une expérimentation menée auprès de jeunes enfants. Des tests [CELI1] ont montré que ces spectateurs ont pu acquérir un niveau intermédiaire en italien malgré l'absence d'enseignement et d'interaction. L'analyse qualitative des entretiens a montré que l'exposition à une langue étrangère par la télévision s'accompagne d'un apprentissage implicite de cette langue, que l'acquisition de celle-ci est le résultat d'une exposition prolongée et qu'elle fait développer davantage des compétences de compréhension que des compétences de production. L'expérimentation menée auprès des enfants a confirmé ces résultats. L'ensemble de ces données a également montré la validité des hypothèses de Krashen concernant la primauté de l'acquisition sur l'apprentissage, l'importance des inputs compréhensibles et l'effet du filtre affectif<br>This thesis aims to shed light on the fact to acquire a foreign language autonomously by watching television. It comes according to two fields of research that are “the didactic of languages” and the “cognitive psychology”. This thesis is based on a survey of Tunisian spectators who have acquired the Italian language by watching the Italian channel Rai Uno and also experimentation conducted with young children. Indeed, the acquisitions of language by the spectators are real despite the absence of education and interaction. They were evaluated by tests [CELI1] which have shown that these viewers have an intermediate level in Italian language. Qualitative analysis of interviews showed that exposure to a foreign language television is accompanied by an implicit learning of the language. The acquisition of the latter is the result of a long exposure and it is further developing the understanding skills than the production skills. Together, these data also showed the validity of Krashen hypothesis regarding the primacy of the acquisition to the learning, the importance of understandable inputs and the impact of the emotional filter

In this thesis a new model for the analysis of foreign language lesson discourse has been developed. It draws on existing models but provides flexibility by focusing on three levels: Frame, Move, Act. An attempt has been made in this thesis to clarify further the domain of pragmatics by looking at the various fields that have contributed to it. This has led the author to (i) differentiate between foreign language lesson discourse and other discourses and (ii) locate the new model in relation to other approaches to discourse analysis. The foregoing discussion has revealed to the author that many researchers and theoreticians have misunderstood many key terms in pragmatics which have contributed to unwarranted positions concerning the role of the teacher and the importance of textbooks in the classroom. A detailed analysis of discourse in eight English lessons in Tunisian secondary schools (two in each of the four years) has been undertaken. The results of the analysis reflect the influence of the textbooks and suggest different degrees of benefit for the learner. There are seven chapters in the thesis. Chapter One reviews the theoretical foundations of the audiolingual method. Chapter Two discusses Chomskyan theory and its influence on approaches to L2 learning and teaching. Chapter Three deals with pragmatics, particularly its relevance to second language learning studies and its importance for the analysis of second language classroom discourse. Chapter Four looks at the communicative approach to second language teaching and related developments in second language acquisition studies. It also discusses Tunisian learners' communication strategies. Chapter Five gives the reader a general background about the Tunisian linguistic community and the educational system there. It also discusses the textbooks used for the teaching of English in Tunisian secondary schools. Chapter Six gives an account of the procedure adopted for data collection and presents in detail the model for the analysis of Tunisian foreign language lesson discourse. Chapter Seven discusses the results of the quantitative analysis of the Tunisian foreign language lesson discourses, and proposes some reforms. The thesis contains a short introduction and conclusion, as well as eight appendices where the orthographic transcription and analysis of each lesson discourse is given. Habib Abdesslem.

<p> The Arab Spring marked a milestone in the political, social, and economic struggle of the Arab populations. Tunisian youth, like the rest of the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) youth, dream of a corruption-free Tunisia, better and stronger educational system, and a fair access to suitable employment opportunities in a rapidly evolving and competitive world where students who are well-prepared academically and master the English language have a clear advantage to land good jobs and enjoy a brighter professional and social future compared to those who lack adequate professional skills and mastery of English language. This study specifically focused on examining the perceptions of Tunisian K–12 and university educators (i.e., teachers and educational leaders) of the effects of the Arab Spring on Tunisia’s educational policies and reforms related to corruption, job preparation, and English language. Historically, Tunisia’s 1956–2010 official educational policy has addressed important issues but not the corruption or job preparation issue. Only the mid-1990’s reform addressed the English language teaching in Tunisian schools. Furthermore, the researcher used the convergent parallel design strategy to answer this study’s empirical research questions (i.e., 2nd and 3rd). Results indicated that 51.9% of Tunisian educators (n = 52) believe that the Arab Spring has set the environment to develop educational policies and reforms related to corruption, 50 % believe that the Arab Spring has set the environment to develop educational policies and reforms related to job preparation, but less than a third (28.8%) believe that the Arab Spring has set the environment to develop educational policies and reforms related to English language. Furthermore, the majority of participants do not believe that Tunisia’s post-Arab Spring educational policies and reforms related to corruption (80.7%), job preparation (76.9%), and English language (65.4%) were effective. Additionally, 96.2% of the participants are convinced that post-Arab Spring Tunisia urgently needs new and effective educational policies and reforms to mitigate corruption, close the education-job market gap, and improve and increase English language teaching in Tunisian schools. There was no discrepancy between statistical and qualitative results in the study. </p><p>

L'objet de cette recherche consiste à étudier le rôle que des manuels d'anglais tunisiens jouent dans l'acquisition d'une Compétence Communicative Interculturelle ('ICC) par les apprenants. On se basant sur des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives ainsi que les modèles de Risager (1991) et de Sercu (2000), l'étude essaie d'évaluer aussi bien quatre manuels d'anglais tunisiens que la connaissance des apprenants et leurs attitudes envers les Britanniques et leur culture. Laquelle étude a tenu compte de deux variables : leurs niveaux d'éducation (6ème et 9ème années de l'enseignement de base) et leur appartenance régionale (zone rurale et zone urbaine ; il s'agit respectivement des deux régions de Bouzguem et de Sfax). L'application du test de corrélation de Pearson sur les données obtenues des élèves et les manuels n'a montré aucun rôle significatif des manuels d'anglais tunisiens évalués dans la formation des attitudes et des connaissances des apprenants dans les deux zones et concernant les deux niveaux d'éducation en question. En effet, l'étude a montré que les élèves ont tendance à être ethnocentriques et n'ont que peu ou une fausse connaissance des Britanniques et de leur culture. Il faut souligner, par ailleurs, que les manuels, ont aussi contribué à présenter une image irréelle et déséquilibrée de la culture britannique. D'autres sources d'informations sur la culture cible semblent être plus influentes dans la formation des attitudes des élèves et leur acquisition des connaissances sur la culture de la langue étrangère qu'ils apprennent. Quelques recommandations sont suggérées pour modifier les manuels évalués afin qu'ils puissent être plus commodes et plus efficaces dans l'enseignement de l'anglais ayant pour objectif la communication interculturelle<br>The aim of this PhD dissertation is to study the role that Tunisian EFL textbooks play in learners' acquisition of an Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). By means of quantitative and qualitative methods and following Risager's (1991) and Sercu's (2000) models, the study attempts to evaluate four Tunisian EFL textbooks as well as learners' knowledge and attitudes towards the British people and culture in terms of two variables: their level of education (6th and 9th form Basic Education) and their regional belonging (rural and urban areas, respectively Bouzguem and Sfax). The application of Pearson' Correlation Test on pupils' and textbooks' data has shown no significant role of the Tunisian EFL textbooks evaluated in shaping learners' attitudes and knowledge in both areas and levels of education. Pupils tend to be ethnocentric and have little and erroneous knowledge of the British people and culture. Textbooks, fail to present an unreal image of the British culture. Other sources of information about the target culture seem to be more influential in forming pupils' attitudes and informing them about the culture of the foreign language they are learning. Some recommendations are suggested to modify the textbooks evaluated to be more convenient and efficient to teach English for intercultural communication

Dans cette thèse, nous proposons une mise en lumière des aspects linguistiques relatifs aux phénomènes de contacts entre locuteurs arabophones et locuteurs appartenant à la communauté sicilienne de Tunisie à travers l’étude d’une chronique particulière, éditée dans le journal italien Simpaticuni (1911-1933). L’un des objectifs de cette recherche est l’analyse du tissu linguistique du corpus dans le but de déterminer la nature véritable de cette langue. Cela se traduit par l’identification des particularités phono-graphiques, morphologiques, syntaxiques et lexicologiques de la langue employée, et par la recherche de la sicilianité des textes en déterminant le degré de dialectalité. Puis, nous examinons les mots empruntés à l’arabe tunisien afin d’en analyser le fonctionnement et la modalité d’insertion dans le tissu syntaxique des chroniques et d’en définir la typologie. S’agit-il de référents à des objets quotidiens ? D’insertions pragmatiques? Quelle est la signification de ces choix ? Enfin, étant donné la nature dialogale de nos textes, nous étudions les variétés en interaction, travail qui permettra d’interpréter la présence des emprunts à l’arabe dans le discours. La numérisation exhaustive d’une rubrique particulière du Simpaticuni a pour objectif d’élargir la quête lexicologique des auteurs qui ont travaillé sur ce journal<br>In this thesis, we propose to highlight the linguistic aspects relating to languages in contact, more particularly between Arabic and Sicilian speakers of Tunisia, through the study of a particular column, published in the Italian newspaper Simpaticuni (1911-1933). One of the issues of this research is to analyses the linguistic base of the corpus, aiming at determining the real nature of this language. In this respect we describe the phonographic, morphological, syntactical and vocabulary features of this language, and measure in what extent the given texts are of a Sicilian nature according to their dialectal degree. We then gather the words borrowed from Tunisian Arabic in order to study their function and the way they occur inside the syntactic structure of the columns, and therefore define their typology. Would they refer to daily objects? Or to pragmatic inclusions? What do these choices mean? Finally, given the speech nature of our texts, we study the varieties in interaction, which will enable us to understand why some words have been borrowed from Arabic. Digitising the whole particular column of the Simpaticuni will enhance the glossary collection undertaken by other scholars who previously worked on this newspaper

Le développement d’outils de traitement automatique pour les dialectes de l’arabe se heurte à l’absence de ressources pour ces derniers. Comme conséquence d’une situation de diglossie, il existe une variante de l’arabe, l’arabe moderne standard, pour laquelle de nombreuses ressources ont été développées et ont permis de construire des outils de traitement automatique de la langue. Étant donné la proximité des dialectes de l’arabe, avec l’arabe moderne standard, une voie consiste à réaliser une conversion surfacique du dialecte vers l’arabe mo- derne standard afin de pouvoir utiliser les outils existants pour l’arabe standard. Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons particulièrement au traitement du dialecte tunisien. Nous proposons un système de conversion du tunisien vers une forme approximative de l’arabe standard pour laquelle l’application des outils conçus pour ce dernier permet d’obtenir de bons résultats. Afin de valider cette approche, nous avons eu recours à un étiqueteur morphosyntaxique conçu pour l’étiquetage de l’arabe standard. Ce dernier permet d’assigner des étiquettes morphosyntaxiques à la sortie de notre système de conver- sion. Ces étiquettes sont finalement projetées sur le tunisien. Notre système atteint une précision de 89% suite à la conversion qui repré- sente une augmentation absolue de ∼20% par rapport à l’étiquetage d’avant la conversion<br>Developing natural language processing tools usually requires a large number of resources (lexica, annotated corpora, ...), which often do not exist for less- resourced languages. One way to overcome the problem of lack of resources is to devote substantial efforts to build new ones from scratch. Another approach is to exploit existing resources of closely related languages. Taking advantage of the closeness of standard Arabic and its dialects, one way to solve the problem of limited resources, consists in performing a conversion of Arabic dialects into standard Arabic in order to use the tools developed to handle the latter. In this work, we focus especially on processing Tunisian Arabic dialect. We propose a conversion system of Tunisian into a closely form of standard Arabic for which the application of natural language processing tools designed for the latter provides good results. In order to validate our approach, we focused on part-of-speech tagging. Our system achieved an accuracy of 89% which presents ∼20% of absolute improvement over a standard Arabic tagger baseline

Dans ce travail de recherche nous avons abordé la question de la perception et de la production des voyelles orales du français par seize enfants tunisiens (8-9 ans) néo-apprenants du français à trois moments différents de leur apprentissage : au début de leur première année de français, après 9 mois d’apprentissage et suite à une période d’entraînements phonétiques. Les résultats obtenus montrent que (1) la perception et la production des voyelles sont fortement influencées par la L1 des apprenants aussi bien au début qu’après 9 mois d’apprentissage ; (2) les performances en perception et en production des néo-apprenants dépendent plus des voyelles elles-mêmes que de leur statut en L2 par rapport à la L1 (voyelles nouvelles, similaires, ou identiques) ; (3) les entraînements phonétiques que nous avons administrés n’apportent pas de bénéfice sur la perception et la production des voyelles orales françaises par les néo-apprenants tunisien<br>In this thesis, we studied the perception and production of the French oral vowels by sixteen Tunisian children (8-9 years old) learning French. Data are collected at three different periods: at the beginning of their first year of learning, after nine months of learning, and after a period of phonetic training. Mais cette position s'est retrouvée menacée à cause de la mondialisation, qui a incité beaucoup de tunisiens à exiger le remplacement du français par l'anglais. L'objectif de cette thèse est donc de mieux comprendre la complexité linguistique dans ce pays, d'explorer les différentes politiques linguistiques qui y ont été instaurées tout au long de son histoire, ainsi que l'impact de ces décisions sur tous les secteurs dans le pays. In order to investigate the current role of the French language in Tunisian society and to discover whether the process of arabization has weakened its influence, different questionnaires were distributed to various categories of Tunisians and interviews took place with targeted persons. Their attitude towards the French language was studied and their language use was analyzed. This thesis also explores the possibility of replacing French with English. Particular attention was paid to the comparison of both languages in the world today and on the benefits each one can bring to the Tunisian economy. This thesis builds on previous studies on the linguistic situation, attitudes and domains of language use in the Maghreb countries undertaken by Marley (2000, 2004, 2005, 2008) in Morocco, Benrabah (2007a, 2007b), in Algeria, and by Jabeur (1999) Daoud (2001, 2011a, 2011b) and Bahloul (2001) in Tunisia. It explores the shifts in the domains of language use, the differences in linguistic attitudes between generations in Tunisia and the role played by globalisation in this process. In order to investigate the ways in which domains of use and attitudes to English and French are shifting, a questionnaire was administered to a group of 100 teachers aged 40 to 60 and a group of 200 students aged 17 to 19. SPSS data analyses showed some statistically significant differences between the two groups. With respect to domains of use, the younger group uses significantly more English as a lingua franca, in chatting online, reading for pleasure, watching TV programmes and listening to songs. Teachers, by contrast, use significantly more French in activities such as reading and watching TV programmes. French remains the preferred foreign language of the older generation, but they believe it is threatened by English in Tunisia, whereas the younger generation preferred English. One main reason for these differences could be what the older generation consider to be the negative impact of globalisation on French and its positive impact on English. Interesting qualitative data were also extracted from the responses to a vox pop questionnaire submitted to 100 lay people in the street and from essays written by two groups of 25 students. These confirmed that the majority of Tunisians consider English to be the most useful foreign language in Tunisia and that it should be given more importance in academic settings due to its world status as an international lingua franca. This thesis also investigates language policy in Tunisia by analysing all relevant extracts from the speeches of Ben Ali, Tunisia’s ex-president, and interviews conducted with the three senior inspectors of the three main languages. Policy has promoted English over French in two ways: first, Arabic rather than French is now the vehicle for the teaching of the human and natural sciences in the Basic Education and, second, new measures in favour of English have simultaneously been taken in and outside academia. To conclude, the findings of this study contribute to knowledge in three ways: Firstly, by identifying differences in domains of language use and attitudes between generations in contemporary Tunisia, secondly, by scrutinizing the way students, teachers and lay people feel about French and English, the two main rival foreign languages in the country and, thirdly, by exploring the political discourse which influences the language situation both directly, through language policy, and indirectly, through hearts and minds.

Since 1994, various policies and guidelines, pertaining to modifying the language policy in Tunisia have been disseminated. All of these policies highlighted the importance of English as a global language. Despite all these policies and guidelines, the English language is still experiencing problems within schools and society alike. These problems prevent the language from developing and functioning accurately in the country. The actual requirements of English language learning are still not integrated into the general considerations of the political agenda. In order to determine what factors teachers perceive as important with regard to the situation of the English language in Tunisia, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches were conducted. The data was gathered by means of an intensive literature study, as well as utilisation of surveys and interviews. After analysing the data, specific conclusions were reached. The findings of my research indicate certain trends, for instance the discrepancy between policy makers’ practises and the teachers’ expectations of change. Additionally, the research highlighted teachers’ needs and desires for a better future. Certain recommendations in this regard have been made. Recommendations on how a clear vision could assist with the attainment of the best linguistic situation in Tunisia have also been made. The recommendations with regard to the study could be utilised to support the national educational reform post revolution in Tunisia in order to promote English language teaching and cope with globalization across the world.

Dans un premier temps, une base de données psycholinguistique en AT a été créée aux fins du contrôle convenable de variables psycholinguistiques dans la sélection des stimuli en AT. Cette première étude avait aussi pour but de mettre à disposition des chercheurs intéressés par le traitement du langage en Arabe une ressource psycholinguistique nécessaire. Dans la deuxième et principale étude, des bilingues AT-Français ont effectué une tâche d’interférence image-mot dans deux contextes expérimentaux différentes : unilingue (Expérience 1) ou bilingue (Expérience 2). Nos résultats suggèrent que le traitement lexical chez les bilingues est dynamique et modulé par un nombre de facteurs incluant, mais non limités à, la compétence langagière et le contexte langagier de l’expérimentation.<br>The main aim of this master’s thesis was to investigate the nature of the lexical selection process among late moderately proficient bilinguals whose two languages are lexically distant: Tunisian Arabic (TA) and French. As a first step, a psycholinguistic normative database in TA was created to enable proper control of several psycholinguistic variables in the selection of TA stimuli. This first study also aimed to provide researchers interested in Arabic language processing with a much-needed psycholinguistic resource for a spoken variety of Arabic. In the second and main study, TA-French moderately proficient bilinguals performed a picture-word interference task in two different language settings: monolingual (Experiment 1) and bilingual (Experiment 2). Our findings suggest that bilingual lexical processing is dynamic and modulated by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, language proficiency and experimental language setting.

Il s'avere que les apprenants tunisiens adoptent des habitudes et des fonctionnements langagiers qui ne peuvent pas etre tous ramenes d'une facon mecanique aux schemas acquis dans la langue maternelle : ce fonctionnement langagier est d'ordre logico-discursif comme le precisent certains linguistes dans la mesure ou il met a nu des operations de pensee acquises a travers l'activite discursive. Le discours des eleves tunisiens, meme s'il a pour fondement une composante narrative, se presente essentiellement comme un discours argumentatif. Pruve en est l'utilisation abondante des connecteurs pragmatiques qui est une des caracteristiques du discours dialogique, plus ou moins assimile en ce sens qu'ils se referent constamment a deux logiques : l'une propre a la langue maternelle etl'autre plus ou moins bien apprise et qui est propre a la langue francaise. Nous avons tente de degager dans cette etude, pour les erreurs et les ecarts les plus signifiants, les grandes lignes d'une explication par les interferences ce type d'explication n'est evidemment pas exclusif : certaines erreurs relevees sont observables chez d'autres appremants que des arabophones tunisiens, voire meme chez des locuteurs francophones natifs en cours d'apprentissage<br>This work is an analysis of the major problems encountered by tunisian pupils when learning french diring their secondary education. Pupils have to adopt mechanisms and idiotisms that cannot mechanically be paralleled to their native language patterns. This use of a new language implies logic in the speech patterns as is stressed by some linguists who think that speech reveals acquired thinking patterns. Tunisian pupils use an argumentative discourse, even though it is based on narration. They resort to an abundant use of pragmatic connectors, which characterize "dialogical" speech, more or less assimilated, as they always refer to two kinds of logic : the logic of their mother tongue ant thatmore or less mastered - of the target - language. We have tried to explain significant errors and differences through interferences. This type of explanation is not unique : some errors can be observed with other pupils who are not of arabic culture, even with french-speaking people trying to learn the language

L'étude sur le tunisien arabophone et la linéarisation de l'énoncé en allemand est formée de deux tomes de cinq chapitres. Après avoir défini les termes de base et présenté les conditions de l'environnement socio-culturel de l'apprenant, nous abordons le corpus de 52 discours, production du tunisien arabophone. Des aperçus sur la linéarisation des systèmes linguistiques fixant les paramètres suivent: celui du système sémitique de l'arabe littéral et celui du système roman du français, présentés en version comparative. Le système germanique est présenté plus en détail pour signaler ce que l'apprenant est censé avoir acquis. Il sert comme base à une meilleure compréhension de l'analyse des fautes. 15 règles de base, issues des conditions syntaxique et morphologique, dont l'application rend la linéarisation grammaticalement correcte, constituent le centre d'intérêt, ainsi que la notion de valence, la division des mots en catégories à l'aide de la classification hétérogène et le "stellungsfeldermodell". En analysant les propositions, nous avons constaté l'omission du verbe conjugué ou sa mise dans une position inadéquate. Cela advient dans les énonciatives pour la partie gauche du cadre verbal, dans les subordonnées pour la partie droite. L'exploitation de ces données a montré l'effet d'interférence comme résultat des transferts. Nous avons incorpore ces connaissances spécifiques dans notre méthode didactique. Le polylinguisme des apprenants aidant, l'approche se fait par la méthode contrastive et par l'étude de textes littéraires authentiques. Une meilleure maitrise de la linéarisation sera profitable pour tous les maitrisards qu'ils se servent de la langue allemande dans leur vie professionnelle comme enseignant ou comme cadre dans le secteur tertiaire.

Elle traite de l'historique de la langue francaise, de son role et de son importance pour aboutir a son statut de langue etrangere tout a fait exceptionnel. Le chapitre le plus important sera consacre a l'enseignement avec toutes ses reformes. La situation linguistique du pays, amene une evocation assez persistante de la langue maternelle absolument necessaire pour determiner la valeur d'une langue etrangere aussi bien dans les programmes scolaires que dans la vie culturelle et meme dans la vie quotidienne des indigenes. La conclusion de cette premiere partie tente de cerner les difficultes liees a la difference entre l'arabe et le francais. La deuxieme partie est essentiellement linguistique elle est basee sur l'analyse des productions orales et ecrites de quelques eleves tunisiens de l'enseignement primaire. L'interet est porte sur l'erreur. Notre demarche a ete de ne pas exagerer la gravite des fautes et de ne pas l'imputer ni a la langue ni a celui qui l'apprend bien au contraire nous avons essaye de demontrer combien la faute peut constituer pour l'eleve un support precieux dans sa strategie d'apprentissage, et revetir par la meme une valeur "therapeutique". Pour conclure, nous avons deduit que l'introduction du francais ne constitue en aucun cas "une charge" supplementaire pour les eleves tunisiens dont nous connaissons par ailleurs les insuffisances. Au contraire, l'acquisition d'une deuxieme ou meme d'une troisieme langue, et notre pratique de l'enseignement du francais nous l'a suffisamment confirme, ne peut-etre qu'un facte indeniable d'enrichissement et d'ouverture. Et c'est ce qui, dans la perspective qui nous preoccupe, peut donner un sens et une rentabilite a ce travail de recherche<br>This thesis is composed of two parts, the first one is a socio-linguistics one. It makes a review of french language, treats of its part and of its importance to end up to its quite exceptional status of foreign language. The most important chapter will be consecrated to teaching with all its reforms. The linguistics situation of the country causes a persistent evocation of mother tongue necessary to determine the value of a foreign language in the school programmes as well as in cultural life and even in the natives everyday life. The conclusion of this first part is trying to define the difficulties linked to the differences between french and arab languages. The second part is essentially a linguistics one. It is based on the analyse of oral and written productions of tunisian pupils in primary schools. Our interest focused on mistake. But our processes have been not to exaggerate the gravity of the mistake and we did not try to imput ir either to the language itself or to the one who learns it. On the contrary we have tried to show how a mistake can constitute a valuable aid for the learner in his learning strategy and in that way it takes on a real "therapeutics" value. To make a conclusion, we say that in a context such as the one, we have just described, the learning of french does not, in any case, constitute an extra an extra "burden" for the pupils whose insufficiencies we are aware of. On the contrary, we think that the acquisation of a second and even a third foreign language - and our pratice in french teaching has proved it to us - can also be an element of enrichment and opening. And that is what can give a meaning to the present work

La spécificité du paysage tunisien révèle la prégnance d'un plurilinguisme complexe où le français se singularise par une catégorisation complexe de ses locuteurs et l'écart entre usage oral marqué par l'alternance codique et usage écrit seul susceptible de générer une norme endogène. L'approche linguistique de cette norme en émergence débouche sur un inventaire de particularités lexicales étudié d'un double point de vue onomasiologique et sémasiologique.

Le développement d'un système de reconnaissance de la parole exige la disponibilité d'une grande quantité de ressources à savoir, grands corpus de texte et de parole, un dictionnaire de prononciation. Néanmoins, ces ressources ne sont pas disponibles directement pour des dialectes arabes. De ce fait, le développement d'un SRAP pour les dialectes arabes se heurte à de multiples difficultés à savoir, l’'abence de grandes quantités de ressources et l'absence d’'une orthographe standard vu que ces dialectes sont parlés et non écrit. Dans cette perspective, les travaux de cette thèse s’intègrent dans le cadre du développement d’un SRAP pour le dialecte tunisien. Une première partie des contributions consiste à développer une variante de CODA (Conventional Orthography for Arabic Dialectal) pour le dialecte tunisien. En fait, cette convention est conçue dans le but de fournir une description détaillée des directives appliquées au dialecte tunisien. Compte tenu des lignes directives de CODA, nous avons constitué notre corpus nommé TARIC : Corpus de l’interaction des chemins de fer de l’arabe tunisien dans le domaine de la SNCFT. Outre ces ressources, le dictionnaire de prononciation s’impose d’une manière indispensable pour le développement d’un SRAP. À ce propos, dans la deuxième partie des contributions, nous visons la création d’un système nommé conversion (Graphème-Phonème) G2P qui permet de générer automatiquement ce dictionnaire phonétique. Toutes ces ressources décrites avant sont utilisées pour adapter un SRAP pour le MSA du laboratoire LIUM au dialecte tunisien dans le domaine de la SNCFT. L’évaluation de notre système donné lieu WER de 22,6% sur l’ensemble de test<br>The development of a speech recognition system requires the availability of a large amount of resources namely, large corpora of text and speech, a dictionary of pronunciation. Nevertheless, these resources are not available directly for Arabic dialects. As a result, the development of a SRAP for Arabic dialects is fraught with many difficulties, namely the lack of large amounts of resources and the absence of a standard spelling as these dialects are spoken and not written. In this perspective, the work of this thesis is part of the development of a SRAP for the Tunisian dialect. A first part of the contributions consists in developing a variant of CODA (Conventional Orthography for Arabic Dialectal) for the Tunisian dialect. In fact, this convention is designed to provide a detailed description of the guidelines applied to the Tunisian dialect. Given the guidelines of CODA, we have created our corpus TARIC: Corpus of the interaction of the railways of the Tunisian Arab in the field of SNCFT. In addition to these resources, the pronunciation dictionary is indispensable for the development of a peech recognition system. In this regard, in the second part of the contributions, we aim at the creation of a system called conversion(Grapheme-Phonème) G2P which allows to automatically generate this phonetic dictionary. All these resources described before are used to adapt a SRAP for the MSA of the LIUM laboratory to the Tunisian dialect in the field of SNCFT. The evaluation of our system gave rise to WER of 22.6% on the test set

Notre interrogation de recherche consiste à nous demander comment le plurilinguisme contribue à la construction de ladite compétence. Nos deux hypothèses de recherche, la transversalité et la diversification, prévoient des rapports interactionnels, analogiques et contrastifs, lors de l’apprentissage et correspondent aux deux caractéristiques de la compétence plurilingue, globale et hétérogène. L’étude diachronique et transversale que nous avons entreprise dans le contexte scolaire tunisien nous a permis de relever les traces de la gestion de l’interaction entre les quatre langues en contact à l’école tunisienne, l’arabe classique, le dialectal, le français et l’anglais<br>In a plurilingual situation, contact between languages facilitates certain practices of interlinguistic relations. These interactions can be sollicited according to a methodological perspective which recognizes their role in the development of writing for the construction of a plurilingual competence. Our research aims at investigating how plurilinguism contributes to the construction of this competence. Our two research hypotheses, transversality and diversification, suggest interactional, analogical and contrastive, links within the learning process and they correspond to the two caracteristics of the plurilingual competence : global and heterogeneous. Cette thèse porte sur l’étude de paramètres acoustiques dans parole fluente chez des locuteurs bègues (SB) et des non-bègues (SNB), tunisiens.Les paramètres acoustiques comparés entre SB et SNB incluent le temps d’établissement du voisement (ou V.O.T), la fréquence du fondamental (F0), des mesures du Jitter et du Shimmer, l’étendue et la direction de la transition du second formant (F2), et également les trois premiers formants (F1, F2 et F3) des trois voyelles /a, i, u/. Les résultats sont en accord avec les études antérieures en ce qui concerne le V.O.T, qui serait aussi plus long chez les bègues américains et français. Concernant les valeurs du F0, des différences significatives entre les deux groupes sont obtenues pour /u/. Les mesures du Jitter et du Shimmer ne montrent pas de différences significatives, contrairement aux résultats recueillis chez les bègues américains où la signification est obtenue pour les mesures du Shimmer. Enfin,en ce qui concerne l’étude des variations formantiques, il y a des tendances sans atteindre la signification pour F1, F2 et F3. Les mesures de F2 sont moins élevées chez les bègues avec quelques résultats significatifs obtenus pour les séquences du type C-u. Le triangle vocalique des trois voyelles /a i u/ chez les enfants bègues tunisiens n’est totalement centralisé contrairement aux triangles obtenus chez les locuteurs bègues français et américains, selon la littérature<br>This thesis concerns the comparison of acoustic parameters in fluent speech in Tunisian stutterers’ speakers (SB) and non-stutterers (SNB), Tunisians.The acoustic parameters which are compared between SB and SNB include the Voice Onset Time (VOT), the fundamental frequency (F0), the measurements of jitter and shimmer, the scope and direction of the transition of the second formant (F2), and the first three formants (F1, F2 and F3) of the three vowels /a, i, u/. The results are consistent with previous studies regarding the V.O.T, which has been found also be longer for American and French stutterers. Concerning F0values, significant differences between the two groups are obtained for /u/. Measurements of jitter and shimmer show no significant differences, contrary to the results found from American concerning the shimmer. Finally, as regards the study of formant variations, there are tendencies without reaching significance for F1, F2 and F3. F2 values are lower in stutterers with significant results obtained for sequences of C-u. The vowel triangle of the three vowels /a, u, i/ in Tunisian children who stutter, is not centralized, unlike triangles obtained for French and American stuttering speakers, according to the literature

Notre mémoire est divise en trois grandes parties. La première partie comprend trois sections qui expliquent le chemin que nous avons suivi pour aller de la simple mise en évidence d'oppositions phonologiques de quantité sur les voyelles en arabe a la méthodologie de l'étude de l'organisation temporelle (timing) du contrôle du mouvement. La seconde partie comprend, elle aussi, trois sections consacrées à l'étude des données exclusivement acoustiques, situant typologiquement celles obtenues pour l'arabe tunisien parmi une quarantaine d'autres langues arabes (dont l'arabe standard et l'arabe koweitien) et non arabes. La dernière partie aborde l'organisation articulatoire de la quantité des variétés de l'arabe choisies. Elle comporte quatre sections décrivant l'acquisition et les traitements de données de timing sur la mandibule, organe rythmique qui participe à la régulation des mouvements de fermeture ouverture du conduit vocal pour différencier les signaux acoustiques dont la dimension temporelle est pertinente. La conclusion de notre travail donne le bilan de nos résultats sur l'efficacité des cycles et des phases - aussi bien articulatoires qu'acoustiques - pour étudier l'organisation temporelle de l'opposition de quantité et les régularités de cette organisation, observées aux deux bouts de la géodialectologie de l'arabe, du Maghreb au Machrek.

L'interet accru porte aux differences sexuelles basees sur le sexe du locuteur dans plus d'une langue ; ainsi que l'existence de ce phenomene dans l'arabe des femmes de tunis, nous a pousse a choisir ce sujet - car cet arabe particulier a ete peu etudie d'une part, et, d'autre part, les usages linguistiques feminins sont en evolution constante, due a l'evolution de la societe tunisienne en general, et au statut des femmes en particulier. Outre trois usages linguistiques communs aux femmes et aux hommes de tunis : l'emploi des emprunts, et le recours au franco-arabe, les tics de langage ; l'utilisation des parlers regionaux ; cette etude porte essentiellement sur les usages feminins par exclusivite ou par preference, et surtout sur le lexique. Celui-ci comprend cinq points : les formules d'adresse, les interjections, les serments et adjurations, le langage euphemistique et le langage poli. Concernant la morphologie, nous avons etudie le diminutif ; et pour la phonolo- gie, nous avons etudie les diphtongues. Le langage rime touche, lui, au style. Nous n'avons pas oublie un usage feminin extra-linguistique ; le langage gestuel<br>The increasing interest in sexual differences such as based on the speaker's sex in many a language, as well as the existence of such a phenomenon in the arabic spoken by women from tunis have dictated upon us the choise of our subject. Such an idiosyncratic arabic has, on the one hand, been little studied and, on the other hand, feminine linguistic usage is undergoing a constant evolution, on account of the evolution of tunisian society in general, and that of women in particular. Besides three linguistic usages common to both men and women from tunis, i. E. Borrowings and the resort to franco-arabic ; linguistic mannerisms ; the use of regional dialects, this study dwells upon feminine usages, whether exclusive or preferential, and mainly upon lexicon. The letter includes five main items : interjections, swearing and beseeching words; address formulas ; euphemistic language ; and courteous polite language. As far as morphology is concerned, we have dealt with the diminutive. As for as phonology, we have studied diphtongues. Style is hinged upon through rhymed language. Sous le Protectorat français en Tunisie, Français installés en Tunisie, Nationalistes tunisiens et Juifs ont chacun produit un ensemble de discours –politiques, de presse et littéraires- de langue française. Les nominations de Soi et des Autres qui y sont produites émanent de la représentation que le sujet du discours se fait de lui-même et de sa communauté et de celle qu’il se fait des Autres exprimant les rapports entre les membres des trois communautés. Les nominations et les représentations de Soi et des Autres sont analysées dans le cadre des discours qui les véhiculent. Analyse de discours, nominations et représentations sont ainsi indissociables. L’analyse des nominations en discours permet de déceler le sens de celles référant aux Français de Tunisie, aux autochtones arabo-musulmans et juifs. Les nombreuses nominations, même quand le référent est le même, expriment des positionnements différents. Le locuteur recourant aux mêmes nominations utilisées par un autre y effectue un réglage de sens. Le praxème "indigène (s)" dans le discours d’un Français de Tunisie ne produit pas le même sens que dans celui d’un nationaliste tunisien. L’adjectif toponymique "tunisiens" est extensible qualifiant tout résident en Tunisie –fût-il étranger- dans le discours des Français alors qu’il est réduit, dans le discours nationaliste, aux seuls vrais habitants du pays, parfois aux seuls arabo-musulmans. Il s’agit d’une bataille pour l’appropriation du lieu dont le moyen n’est autre que le nom. Et le régime politique instauré par la France en Tunisie de 1881 à 1956 ; est-il un Protectorat ou une colonisation ? Notre étude des nominations et des représentations de Soi et des Autres à partir d’un corpus composé de quelques discours nous met face à la recherche du ou des sens des nominations et le nécessaire décodage de leurs référents<br>During the French protectorship in Tunisia, the French that are settled in Tunisia, Tunisian Nationalists and Jews have, each of them, established a set of discourses in the field of politics, press and literature in French language. The nominations of the I and Others that are made widespread derive from the representation that makes of the subject of discourse himself and his community as well as the Others representative of the relationships or rapport between the members of the three communities. The nominations and the representations of the I and the Others are analysed in the frame of the discourses that make them widespread. Discourse analysis and nominations can never be dissociated. The meaning of nominations in discourse allows to find out referentials of the French settled in Tunisia, the native arabo-musulman and Jews. The innumerable nominations, even when they refer to the same referent, do not have the same connotations. The subject of discourse referring to the same nominations used by another subject provides them with new values. The nomination "indigene" in the discourse of a French in Tunisia does not have the same meaning as that in the discourse of the Tunisian nationalist. The toponymic adjective "tunisians" is bound to apply for every resident of Tunisia even though he is a foreigner in the discourse of the French; however, this meaning is dashed in the nationalist discourse and becomes restricted only to the real inhabitants of the country, id est, the arabo-musulman natives. It is actually a struggle for the appropriation of the space where the only means is the noun. And the political system that was established by France in Tunisia from 1881 to 1956, was-it a protectorship or colonization? Our study of the nominations and the representations of the I and the Others is to be backed up by a corpus involving some discourses that pave the way for a research of the meaning or meanings of the nominations and the necessary decoding of the referents

Nous sommes partie d’un constat, celui de la fréquence, de la réitération, et surtout de la persistance, depuis des dizaines d’années, de nombreuses erreurs d’un genre particulier relatives à l’emploi des pronoms personnels du français, produites par les apprenants tunisiens. Nous avons formé le projet de travailler sur les divers obstacles et les différentes sources de difficultés auxquels se heurte l’apprenant tunisien dans l’apprentissage et l’emploi de ce fait linguistique. Les problèmes liés à cet apprentissage et à cet emploi semblent présenter la double particularité d’être d’un côté spécifiques à la nature de ce fait de langue (cette catégorie de morphèmes est très complexe à cause des contraintes morpho – syntaxiques qu’elle présente) et inhérents à ses degrés de convergence et de divergence avec les faits de langue correspondants dans la langue maternelle de l’apprenant, le dialecte tunisien, et dans « sa deuxième première langue », l’arabe classique ; et d’un autre côté, généraux c’est-à-dire liés au contexte dans lequel cette langue est enseigné, contexte où plusieurs paramètres entrent en jeu : problèmes sociolinguistiques et psycholinguistiques. La question du statut du français enseigné en Tunisie est posé, statut qui varie d’un cycle à l’autre, et d’une région à l’autre et qui exige, dans tous les cas, des outils, des méthodes et des pratiques pédagogiques appropriés.La thèse que nous développons dans ce travail repose sur l’idée qu’à l’origine des problèmes constatés dans l’emploi des pronoms personnels, se trouvent ces différents facteurs généraux et spécifiques qui ont toujours agi à la défaveur de l’enseignement-apprentissage de la grammaire en général et qui, malgré la succession des réformes, n’ont jamais été pris en charge. Ainsi, l’échec de l’enseignement-apprentissage des pronoms personnels est essentiellement lié à l’absence de prise en charge des vraies difficultés rencontrées dans ce contexte par les enseignants et les apprenants<br>We started from a general remark about the frequency, reiteration and particularly the persistence, since many years, of numerous errors of a particular kind. These errors are relative to the use of personal pronouns of the French language produced by Tunisian learners.We developed the project through working on the diverse obstacles of different sources to which the Tunisian learner is exposed in the learning and use of this linguistic fact. The problems related to this learning and this use seem to be of a double particularity. One the one hand, the problems are specific to the nature of this element in the language (This category of morphemes is very complex because of the morpho-syntactic constraints which it presents) and inherent to its convergence and divergence degrees with the corresponding language facts of the learner’s mother tongue, the Tunisian Arabic dialect, and also with the “first second language”, the Standard Arabic. On the other hand, they are general which means that they are related to the context in which the language is taught. Many parameters, mainly sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic problems, intervene in this context. The issue of the status of the French taught in Tunisia is raised. This status varies from one cycle to another and one region to another and which requires, in all cases, appropriate methods and pedagogical practices. The thesis that we develop in this work is built on the idea that the remarked problems in the use of personal pronouns originate from different general and specific factors that have always acted unfavorably in the learning-teaching of the grammar in general which, despite the subsequent reforms, have never been taken into consideration. Hence, the failure of the learning-teaching of personal pronouns is essentially related to the absence of consideration of the real difficulties involved in this context both to the teachers and the learners

Au confluent de nombreux domaines, notre recherche a des préoccupations à la fois linguistiques, didactiques et professionnelles. Le postulat de base est que l’acte d’argumenter est omniprésent dans la communication professionnelle de type formel. Pourtant, peu de travaux se sont préoccupés de cette dimension technique de l’argumentation. Le premier objectif de la recherche est de contribuer à une meilleure connaissance de la place donnée et du rôle effectif de l’argumentation dans la communication professionnelle. Les données pratiques sont recueillies à travers une enquête, constituée d’entretiens et d’un questionnaire, auprès des intervenants aussi bien dans le monde professionnel que dans le champ du Français sur Objectifs Spécifiques (FOS). Cela amène à une réflexion didactique sur l’acquisition de cette compétence spécifique en FOS dans le contexte éducatif et sociolinguistique tunisien conférant au français un statut de langue seconde, en prenant comme exemple illustratif l’enseignement supérieur. Les implications didactiques de ce contexte justifient le second objectif de la recherche consistant en une réflexion prospective et innovante, espérons-le, sur les pratiques de formation à la communication professionnelle, spécifiquement argumentative. Cette réflexion cherche à opérer une conciliation entre les objectifs classiques des curricula du FOS et les objectifs pratiques de la communication professionnelle, au moyen de la confection d’un référentiel de compétences argumentatives en communication professionnelle à faire acquérir aux apprenants et d’un traitement didactique spécifique pour l’une des compétences sous forme de contenus de formation adéquats<br>At the confluence of many fields, our research has at the same time linguistic, didactic and professional preoccupations. Its basic premise is that the argumentation act is omnipresent in formal professional communication. Yet, few works were interested in this technical dimension of argumentation. The first objective of the research is to contribute to a better knowledge of the place given to argumentation and its efficient role in professional communication. The practical data are collected through an investigation, consisting of interviews and a questionnaire, with the concerned parties in the professional world as well as in the field of French for Specific Purposes (FSP). This leads to a didactic study of the acquisition of this specific competence in FSP in the Tunisian educational and sociolinguistic context that confers to French a status of Second Language, taking higher education as an illustrative example. The didactic implications of this context justify the second objective of our research consisting of a prospective and innovative thinking about the training practices for the professional communication, specifically the argumentative one. This study tries to strike conciliation between the classic objectives of the FSP curriculum and the practical objectives of professional communication. This conciliation is achieved through the production of an argumentative competences framework in professional communication to be acquired by learners and through a specific didactic treatment for one of the competences, which consists in adequate training contents

C'est cette situation aux enjeux et implications que nous nous proposons d'eclairer. Pour ce faire, nous avons adopte deux approches : une approche empirique (enquete en milieu scolaire) dont les resultats constituent le fondement empirique de la presente etude, une approche theorique proposant une definition qualitative de l'enseignement du francais et construisant un modele pour un meilleur apprentissage-enseignement de la langue francaise. Ces approches nous ont permis d'apporter des reponses a un certain nombre de probleme cles concernant de developpement et l'organisation et l'enseignement du francais en milieu scolaire et universitaire tunisien. Taking into consideration the learning reorganization of the last thirty years, this work addresses the new issues in grammar in the teaching/learning of French as a Second Language: If the study of morpho-syntactic structures is no longer a major concern as before, inter-sentential linguistics is in vogue nowadays in the methods of teaching languages. Without denying the merits of sentence grammars, this thesis presents itself as a kind of a propaedeutic invitation to the implementation of textual and enunciative linguistics in the second language classrooms and particularly in the Tunisian context

Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une méthodologie guillaumienne; il comprend deux grandes sections: 1 section: études de psychosystématique française. 2 section: études de psychosystématique arabe. Il s'agit, à l'origine, d'un ensemble d'articles et de communications, portant, les uns, sur des problèmes de syntaxe française, les autres, sur une tentative d'application de la psychosystématique du langage à la description de la langue arabe. Certains chapitres de la première section traitent de problèmes de grammaire contrastive (arabe français), envisages dans une perspective guillaumienne; ailleurs, il est traité de la question de la norme en grammaire; la quatrième partie de la 1ere section traite des degrés d'intensité au sein desquels nous nous interrogeons sur les problèmes épineux que posent le comparatif et le superlatif en français. La deuxième section aborde la langue arabe à laquelle est appliquée la psychosystématique du langage. La question est abordée, alternativement, au plan général et au plan général et au plan particulier où nous essayons de théoriser, à la suite et dans le sillage de G. Guillaume, le mot arabe. Compte y est tenu de la doctrine guillaumienne et également des vues des anciens grammairiens arabes. Malgré la diversité relative des cadres de recherche (centres de recherche scientifique, colloques internationaux,. . . ), et celle des thèmes, notre travail présente une profonde unité, notre souci constant étant l'interrogation de faits linguistiques (français et ou arabes) à la lumière d'une théorie fortement mentaliste qu'est le guillaumisme. Temps, mode, aspect, norme en grammaire, degrés d'intensité, comparatif, superlatifs relatif et absolu; théorie de l'arabe, du mot arabe, de la déclinaison, de la racine, arabes: voilà les principaux points appréhendés. Constamment l'analyse (détaillée) est au service de la synthèse qui, aidée de l'intuition scientifique, tend à transcender (au sens guillaumien du mot) l'observation, nécessaire, des faits linguistiques.

Notre recherche porte sur la maîtrise de l'écriture chez les étudiants spécialistes de français des universités tunisiennes, et plus précisément sur ceux de l'Institut Supérieur des Langues de Tunis et de la Faculté des Lettres de la Manouba. En première année d'université, on a tendance à considérer la maîtrise de l'écrit par l'étudiant comme un fait acquis puisque ce dernier est soumis dès son jeune âge à un apprentissage simultané de l'écrit dans deux langues (le français et l'arabe littéral), réussi puisque sanctionné par l'admission au Bac. Notre objectif est de tenter de comprendre les besoins effectifs des étudiants tunisiens à travers l'observation et l'analyse de leurs pratiques scripturales en langue française en nous intéressant tout autant aux capacités dont ils font preuve au cours de l'exécution de la tâche qu'on leur fixe qu'à leurs éventuelles carences. Nous nous sommes interrogée, tout particulièrement, sur l'influence de la formation universitaire qu'ils reçoivent sur ces savoir-faire, en examinant ses traces, langagières et métalangagières dans les comportements procéduraux comme déclaratifs de ces étudiants (similitudes et différences). Ils nous ont paru, en effet, de bons révélateurs de la compétence écrite en français qui est susceptible d'être acquise au sein du système scolaire et universitaire tunisien. Nous nous sommes intéressée, par ailleurs, à la situation sociolinguistique tunisienne, par rapport au français d'une part et à l'écrit en général de l'autre. Elle est à l'origine du rapport d'attraction/répulsion à l'écriture en français langue seconde qu'entretiennent ces étudiants. Enfin, à la suite de l'analyse des corpus effectuée et au vu des résultats recueillis, nous faisons quelques suggestions didactiques susceptibles d'aider à repenser certaines habitudes scripturales chez les étudiants et, chez les enseignants, certaines des méthodes de formation langagière mises en place dans le début de ce cursus universitaire<br>Our research is about the mastery of the writing among the specialist students of French of the Tunisian universities, and more precisely on those of the University of the Languages of Tunis and the University of Arts of “Manouba”. In first year of university, one tends to consider the mastery of the writing by the student like a fact acquire as this last is submitted since its young age to a simultaneous training of the writing in two languages (French and literal Arabic), successful since punished by the admission in the Baccalaureate exam. Our objective is to tempt to understand the efficient needs of the Tunisian students through the observation and the analysis of their scriptural practices in French language while interesting us not only to the capacities of which they give proof during the execution of the task we give them, but also to their possible deficiencies. We wondered, especially, on the influence of the academic training that they receive on this ability, while examining its traces, linguistics and meta-linguistics in the procedural behaviours as declarative of these students (likeness and differences). They appeared to us, indeed, good developers of written expertise in French that is susceptible to be acquired within the Tunisian school and academic system. We were interested, otherwise, to the Tunisian sociolinguistic situation in relation to French on the one hand and to the writing in general on the other. It is at the origin of the connection between attraction and repulsion to the writing in French language as a second language that these students maintain. Finally, following the analysis of the corpora done and within sight of the results collected, we make some didactic suggestions susceptible to help reconsider some scriptural habits among the students and, some of the linguistic training methods set up in the beginning of this academic degree course among the teachers

La communauté italienne contemporaine implantée de vieille date en Tunisie, devrait son "extinction" au non renouvellement des générations du fait des départs de la quasi-totalité des classes actives. A travers des enquêtes conduites auprès de quelques membres de cette communauté, il résulte qu'en dépit de l'emprise coloniale française en Tunisie et de certaines pressions exercées par le gouvernement tunisien, ces ressortissants ont subi une influence aussi bien française que tunisienne, mais n'ont assimilé en fait ni l'une ni l'autre. Ils préservent leur identité culturelle et les traits les plus significatifs de leur langage d'origine<br>The "extinction" of the present Italian community established in Tunisia from long ago, will be due to the non-renewal of the generations, as the majority of the working population leaves the country. Different surveys conducted on several members of this community have shown that in spite of the colonial authority of France on Tunisia and the pressure of the Tunisian government on the community, they have been under French and Tunisian influence, but they have actually assimilated neither one nor the other. They have still kept their cultural identity and the specific characteristics of their original language

This study explores the whys and wherefores of the communication difficulties experienced by Tunisian secondary school learners of English as a foreign language, and aims at offering ways out of the issue.It has been demonstrated that the issue proceeds broadly from the woeful dearth of exposure to and practice of the language and certain inadequacies of the teaching methodology.English seems to be learned as a mere curricular discipline, in that students have only a few weekly sessions confined solely to a classroom setting.The inadequacies of the teaching methodology are manifest in a number of aspects. The use of the mother tongue in EFL classes has proved to generate more harm than good. In the very framework, it has also been revealed that Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has not been at the level of the expected outcome. Two CLT principal principles, focus on meaning to the detriment of form, and prioritizing oral fluency over written proficiency, as well as certain constraints, mainly the severe lack of instructional materials and large classes have intervened with its successful implementation in EFL classes. An added factor related to teaching methodology is the quasi‐absence of theoretical teaching as a prerequisite for the success of specific learning activities.Accordingly, exposing learners profusely to English in various ways inside and outside the classroom, adopting an only‐English eclectic approach to teaching the language, and combining theoretical instruction with practical teaching can considerably contribute to surmounting the students' learning difficulties, and hence to the achievement of their communicative competence.

Le contact de langues, champ de recherches dans lequel s'inscrit cette thèse, n'implique pas seulement les langues elles-mêmes mais aussi les locuteurs, les sociétés ou ces langues sont utilisées ainsi que les cultures confrontées dans ce contact. Pour ces raisons, nous avons, au cours de cette recherche, opté pour une approche sociolinguistique. A partir d'enquêtes sur le terrain (ville de Sfax en 1989) et d'entretiens semi-directifs, notre objectif a été de cerner les caractéristiques et les spécificités de l'alternance de codes arabe dialectal français à Sfax. Après une présentation de la situation sociolinguistique tunisienne où arabe standard, arabe dialectal et français coexistent, ont été traitées les questions relatives au recueil des données et aux difficultés du terrain. Ont été abordées également les questions suivantes : comment repérer les diverses manifestations résultant du contact linguistique tels qu'emprunt, mélange, transfert de codes ou interférence ? Quelle grammaire faut-il utiliser pour analyser l'alternance ? Comment cerner les fonctions discursives de l'alternance de codes arabe dialectal français ? Quels sont enfin les facteurs susceptibles d'expliquer ou de déterminer le choix linguistique ? Enfin, la réflexion a été orientée vers l'analyse du discours épilinguistique (jugements de valeur) sur les langues en place et leurs emplois respectifs<br>Languages in contact, the research domain in which this study has been carried out, does not only involve languages in themselves, but also speakers and societies in which these languages are used, as well as the cultures confronted in this contact. For these reasons, during this research, we have opted for a sociolinguistic approach based on investigations (city of sfax 1989) and on semi-directed interviews, our objective has been to define the caracteristics and the specificities of Arabic French code-switching. After a presentation of the tunisian sociolinguistic situation which caracterized by the coexistence of standard arabic dialectal arabic and french, we deal with questions related to collecting data and to the difficulties we had to face. We also deal with the following questions : how to spot various manifestations resulting of languages in contact such as borrowing code-mixing, code shifting or interference ? L'objet de cette recherche est l'étude des représentations produites en milieu scolaire et ayant statut de variables intermédiaires entre l'enseignement et l'apprentissage. L'étude différenciée de ces représentations dans le cadre de la langue maternelle et des mathématiques, dans le premier cycle secondaire, a permis de mettre en évidence les rapports dynamiques qu'entretient la représentation de la matière avec la représentation du partenaire et de soi dans la situation scolaire. Les résultats d'une première étude menée auprès de 431 élèves de troisième année et leurs professeurs vont dans le sens de l'hypothèse d'une liaison positive entre la représentation de la matière et celle faite du partenaire. L'étude de la représentation de soi a été menée à partir d'un questionnaire auto-descriptif administre auprès de 755 élèves du premier cycle (et constituant un instrument d'évaluation pour les professeurs). L'analyse des données (par l'analyse factorielle de correspondances notamment) rend compte des principaux déterminants de la représentation de soi, du lien qu'elle semble avoir avec les évaluations des enseignants, ainsi que de son évolution au cours des premières années de l'adolescence interprétable en termes de construction de l'identité<br>The purpose of this research is to study the representations that occur in the school environment and are considered as intermediary variables between teaching and learning. The distinctive study of these representations in the framework of the mother tongue and mathematics in the first cycle of secondary education made it possible to bring to the fore the dynamic relationships existing between the subject matter and the representation of the other and of the self within the school context. Results obtained from a first study involving 431 third-year pupils and their teachers tend to confirm the hypothesis that there exists a positive relationship between the representation of the subject matter and the representation of the other. The study of the representation of the self was conducted using a self-descriptive questionnaire which was administered to 755 first cycle pupils (and which also constituted an evaluation instrument for teachers). The data analysis accounts for the main determinants of the representation of the self, the link this representation seems to have with the evaluation of the teacher as well as its evolution during the first years of adolescence
