Full textThe streets in Tunis by the of the 19th and 20th centuries. Tunis, capital of the Ottoman Tunis Province Regency, was, like many other capitals in the Mediterranean Muslim world, experiencing great changes as a result of the reform movement which took its inspiration from the Ottoman Tanzimat. The scope of the research is the study of the evolution of urban design in Tunis through the great scansions and changes of the town urban history in the period 1835-1935. In the context of the predominance of European influence over the Mediterranean and in the Maghreb in the 19th Century and the establishment of the French Protectorate, the transition from the old town to the modern town reveals/unveils/brings out local resistance, the survival of previous/older institutions, a mixture of influences, and the emergence of a new definition of urban space in total break with the past. This new definition represents a watershed with respect to space status and the transition from urban to public space by the turn of the 20th century. Streets, public buildings, domestic architecture, usage/uses and meanings change significantly. The observation of urban changes and of the transformation of the street network is organised around three levels of analysis. At general level, the actual changes of the town, the analysis of public space forms, and urban space dimensions and their impact on architectural production. The purpose of this research, which is based on the assessment of urban changes and the emergence of new municipal conceptions and urban infrastructure in Tunis in the period 1835-1935, is to contribute to the knowledge of the urban history of the town, before and after the establishmentof the French Protecorate, during a key/critical period, the analysis of which has been hidden under an ideological veil

Full textThrough a socio-anthropological survey realized in the women's zawiya of the tijaniyya of Tunis, we have tried to discover the collective structuration mode which prevails inside the zawiya. Our hypothesis was simple : to this sacred pagan form, which is reflected through the salvation means movement as well as possession rituals inside the shrine, corresponds a different relationship with the social otherness : the sociability. Thus the aim of our research doesn't concern the "maraboutical" practices, nor the possession cult in themselves, but consists to conceive them through a phenomenological approach, which insists on the concrete religious life and minor interactions experienced by the social actors. Such analysis allows us to display the full dimension of the non-rational, the mythical and the theatrical which structures the collective experience
Abdelkafi, Jellal. "La médina, espace historique de Tunis : enjeu culturel et politique de l'organisation spatiale." Paris 12, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987PA120012.
Full textThe medina of tunis, an area of residual and unique qualities defined as a historic area, is not presented as the center but as a cultural and political enjeu of the spatial organization. The question of the enjeu is developped in three parts : the first two from a historical point of view and the third accordind to the themes. The first book analyses the process of occidentalisation of the medina beginning in 1837 in the context of the reforms and the european influences. The part played by the capital city is studied in connection with the nineteenth century patrimonial state while ulama-s" and baldiyya-s' authority and power are prestented to account for the management of the urban area. The connection between the old city and its new counterpart yet in the making is analysed in the light of the institutional bicephalism and the real estate question. The analyse of the technical, scientific and political answers to the question of the decaying medina ends with the presentation of the urban structure at the expiration of the protectorat. The second book estimates the attitudes of the "nouvel etat" towards the medina now considered as the historic area of tunis in the context of the national process of urbanization. While the degourbification of the capital - i. E. Slums clearance -is presented by the gover- nment as the symbol of the recovering of national dignity, the taudification of the medina -i. E. Growing into a slummy area - appears as the symbol of the traditional society in decay. From 1970 the position of the government has changed : it first admits the hypothesis of safeguarding of the medina then denies it and finally adopts a new policy : to integrate the historic area to the general scheme of modernization of the capital. The third book analyses the planning pratices, the patrimoine policy, the speeches backing up the work on the historic area and finally the various representations of the medina. The conclusion enhances the original demography of the medina and the perenniality of spa- tial discontinuity and social segregations and gives a synthesis the followirgthemes : - the desacralisation of the medina and the coming on of the historic area. - the part of the mythologies of muslim urbanism

Full textThis research studies the landscape heritage protection in the European sector of the city of Tunis. To identify the landscapes that play a key role in identity construction, we use a methodology of landscape evaluation based on the analysis of the urban-lanscape, of the perceptions and representations. Our sources are tourist guides, the website "harissa" and serveys carried out among the inhabitants of the city of Tunis. To identify the actors and the interests linked to this landscape heritage protection process, this research compares three periods of Tunisian history. We thus compare the evolution of the cultural heritage protection process from the Protectorate to the present time, and three recent projects : the Embellishment of the Habib Bourguiba avenue, the Rehabilitation of the Belvedere Park and the Restructuring of the "little sicily" neighbourhood

Rather than a product of rural exodus, the peripheral spontaneous settlements seem to be an expression of an expulsion process generated by development models implemented between and 1980. The first part of the thesis analyses the effects the process of capital accumulation in tunisia between 1960 and 1980 and shows how they have generated various mecanisms of expulsion versus the low income people and hence provoked the development of the peripheral spontaneous settlements. The second part analyzes the peripheral spontaneous settlements as a three dimensions phenomenon : actors - mecanisms - products and a new pattern for producing housing whose fonction has been to insure the diffusion of housing property among the people who where put out of the housing market. The third part analyzes the evolution of the relation chips between the state and this new pattern of urbanization and shows that the state in its formula- tion of e new urban policy recognizes the role of this new urbanization and tends to realize its integration

Two trends are noted: fragmentation, translated by an accentuation of socio-spatial differentiations, and the intensification of daily mobility. The object of our research is to question the fragmentation through the development of daily mobility (s) differentiated in Greater Tunis. The analysis of the physical and spatial reorganization of this metropolis and the daily mobility of a sample of individuals showed the development of specialized fragments dispersed under the effect of metropolitan selectivity and the multiplication of places of daily life leading to fragmented daily mobility. These refer to a social fragmentation manifested by the exclusion of certain territories and populations from the international scale of operation of the metropolis

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to show how creative commercials in Tunisia from 1994 to 2007 sought to create a new transnational artistic identity. And that following the cultural and sociological mutations known in this country in recent years. At first, I will outline the various key elements of identity, social, historical, political, communicational ... which led local designers to this inevitable quest. In a second time, and as part of a comprehensive analysis of advertising spots, I will check first the results that I achieved in the first part. But I also try to show the way in which the designers have made a reconciliation with the Arab-Islamic identity, memory of' tunisian ancestors and some modern identity, inspired greatly from the global culture, as the use of new images that have allowed advertisers to give a new look to several codes stereotyped. Finally, in the third part, 1 will try to evaluate the effectiveness of this communication. I study the impact of this new advertising image in order to deduce the action of this recent artistic approach

Full textA differential analysis of, the one hand, the daily practice of the space, and, on the other hand, its dreamlike representation as it is imagined by children belonging to two contrasting neighborhoods of tunis (a traditional and a quite "european" one) helped us in noticing that the space in a city is both historically and socially predetermined. As each society reproduces its own space, the social practices of the space tend to vary: they hold a mirror up to the social division of labor and the social stratification. Indeed, the different uses of the space (or what was called the "real-life space") revealed quantitative and qualitative disparities between the neighbordhoods. While the children of the medina are left to themselves after the classes, thos e of the "european" city obey an implacable order. This reflects an explicit division between two antagonistic spaces coexisting but never mixed. Thus, being the reflection of all the oppositions making two neighborhoods gouverned by a series of coded phenomena, the dream is not the slightest. Directly drawn from reality of the consciousness, the element s of the daydream, on the one hand, a rural world directly transplanted into the city, one the other hand, a practical w orld copied out as it is actually; and each of them expresses the opposition of a socialpolitical reality of which the child, even in his dreams, is a witness, as he symbolizes the ideology of the social configuration he belongs to

Without falling behind other rich countries metropolises, Tunis got itself involved in the waterfront development. Why is the Tunisian capital seizing hold of the lakes and its shores it has neglected up till now? How is the city creating itself at the water's edge? After studying the heritages of Tunis' relation to its water site, the author analyses the urban development of the lakes that reflects, on the one hand, a changing approach to landuse planning and, on the other hand, the physical and intellectual reintegration of water site in the spatial organisation and the identity of the capital. Finally, the study of the territorial construction of "Les Berges du Lac", the first planned waterfront to be used to this day, ends this research

Full textA combination of demographic changes and the development of informal settlements in Tunis and its surrounding area mean that the city now constitutes what is an international metropolis, with a median zone extending over 30 km. Given the complexity of the system originally in place, with its many structural and procedural constraints, along with the limitations of land policies which have already been pursued, access to urban land in Tunisia is increasingly dependent on market regulation. The Tunisian government is now studying the proposal of a future project of a new town in a locality called Fejja, located approximately thirty-five kilometers from the capital. The first of its kind in Tunisia, this project aims to reconcile an industrial park with a zone of habitat within the dynamics of an economically sustainable and durable development. The urban sprawl of Grand Tunis is the result of a number of factors; one of which being the illegal developers and the landowners. Those factors are responsible for the development of a land market designed specifically for people with low income. In terms of housing policy, the state has so far proved unsuccessful it its attempts to provide a land offer which is suitably adapted to this community. It has thus decided to tolerate such housing developments which are now common to the outskirts of the city. This work consists in analyzing the different phases of the urbanization process of Tunis, and to determine the underlying mechanisms behind this process, such as densification, peri-urban and regional development projects through the creation of a new town

The context of the transition was explained to better understand the circumstances in which it occurred and how that context will affect the entire transition process. It will be a question of putting forward, first, the originality of the process of the constitutional transition in Tunisia then a study of the new Constitution. In the same way the research explains how the progressive wishes and the respect of the Tunisian identity were reconciled through the preservation of a certain number of values and principles of conservative tendency. Finally, the object of the thesis is prolonged to analyze of concretely, the transition from the constitutional transition to the democratic transition, through the more or less effective implementation of new institutions. However, it has been necessary to show that, while the process of constitutional transition seems to have been completed, its practical implementation encounters a number of difficulties that should be resolved in order for the democratic transition phase to truly end

This work of Protectorate, oscillates between an architecture which takes as a starting point an artistic repertory western (eclectic current, art nouveau, art deco or modernist) and an architecture which refer to the local repertories (neo-moresque current). Certain achievements thus made it possible to found a continuity and a dialogue with local art, whereas others present classic or modern architectural designs which reflect a foreign language breaking with the old heritage of Tunisia. This study was centred on the case of the town of Tunis, between 1900 and 1930, period during which the most outstanding buildings of style neo-moresque set up

Full textToday, more and more historic urban centers are becoming heritage sites. Numerous preservation initiatives have been launched by institutions, associations and even residents themselves. However, the growing interest in the built environment of urban centers is challenging relations between residents, and more broadly between users of these spaces, in a variety of ways. Following in Henri Lefebvre's footsteps, it's possible to argue that rules aimed at preserving architecture, or even a neighborhood as a whole, necessarily reconfigure the social uses they previously made possible. In other words, the dynamics of heritage preservation inevitably redefine the dynamics of appropriation of spaces by their inhabitants. In this work, we have decided to examine this change in the way inhabitants appropriate urban spaces, by focusing on the Medina of Tunis. This choice seems all the more pertinent given that the various challenges associated with the socio-cultural and urban evolutions of recent decades are particularly visible. The originality of this work lies not only in its analysis of the hypothesis - quite intuitive, after all - that heritage development necessarily modifies modes of appropriation, but also in its attempt to understand the ways in which the mechanisms of appropriation in turn bring into play the management of the historic center. In this work, we have therefore opted for a singular methodological approach to analyze the involvement of private actors in the public authority's patrimonialization of the Medina. Better still, we show that this involvement is extremely diverse, and leads us to rethink the types of appropriation studied as drivers, composers or claimants of a multiple patrimonialization. Finally, this work on the relationship between appropriation and heritage opens up other research perspectives, leading us to question the power relations that determine living in the Medina, the right to the city, and the sustainability of modes of living

In order to investigate the current role of the French language in Tunisian society and to discover whether the process of arabization has weakened its influence, different questionnaires were distributed to various categories of Tunisians and interviews took place with targeted persons. Their attitude towards the French language was studied and their language use was analyzed. This thesis also explores the possibility of replacing French with English. Particular attention was paid to the comparison of both languages in the world today and on the benefits each one can bring to the Tunisian economy. Considering the importance of the opinion of Tunisian people on this matter, questionnaires and interviews were also realized

Full textIn a landscape devastated by what has been hastily labeled the "Arab Spring," marked by the resurgence of authoritarianism in Egypt and civil wars in Libya, Yemen, and Syria - which have reinvigorated jihadist groups and stirred the specters of tribalism, ethnic strife, and religious conflicts - Tunisia stands as a remarkable exception. Despite enduring a protracted and fragile political transition, the country has managed to safeguard its republican institutions, adopt a new Constitution acclaimed by numerous observers as the most progressive in the Arab world, and successfully navigate the challenges of two legislative and presidential elections in 2014 and 2019.This Tunisian exceptionalism can be attributed to several factors, with consensus (Tawâfuq) being paramount among them. Indeed, what we refer to as "consensus" constitutes the cornerstone of Tunisia's democratic transition, often characterized as consensual. The crowning achievement of this consensus during the transitional phase was the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the quartet that orchestrated the national dialogue in Tunisia in 2014.Similarly, consensus lent its name to the Tunisian Constitution of January 27, 2014, acclaimed as a consensual Constitution. Successive versions of the Constitution underwent extensive deliberation, culminating in a consensus. This process was highly consultative, designed to reconcile differences on pivotal issues and secure broad societal agreement on the provisions of the new Constitution. Notably, the creation of the "consensus commission" within the National Constituent Assembly aimed to overhaul the rules governing the representation of various political forces. The composition of the consensus commission did not adhere to proportional representation; rather, each group was allotted an equivalent number of members.Nevertheless, while consensus facilitated the establishment of a democratic political and constitutional regime, setting Tunisia apart as an exception in the region, it also revealed certain adverse effects during the consolidation phase of the regime, encompassing political, institutional, and constitutional aspects. The spirit of reconciliation, which temporarily quelled antagonisms and differences, did not resolve underlying socio-economic issues, and these problems may resurface after a period of dormancy

Full textThe first part of this thesis addresses the question to what extent the location of a firm can be regarded as having an influence on the growth of newly created firms as measured by employment growth. For this, we propose a model of firm growth –using a database of 412 high tech firms and 993 low-tech firms- that is specific to characteristics of the location as well as the firm and industry. We emphasize in particular the capacity of the location to offer them and environment rich in knowledge. Estimates indicate that the low-tech firms growth is largely influenced by locational characteristics as well as characteristics specific to the firm and industry while the growth of high tech firms is independent of the characteristics of the location. They are not sensitive to local and neighboring sources of knowledge. This result shows that the location is rather constrained and it has serious deficiencies regarding the supply of inputs that are necessary to the development of new technological firms. The new data of the economy of knowledge would make it impossible to maintain an economic model insufficiently competitive. The public powers then called for the creation of business incubators in order to create a conducive environment to the growth of innovative firms. Thus we propose in the second part, an analysis of the role of business incubators in order to understand whether they can fill in the gaps in the market. The results show that incubators play an important role in the firm growth, although they suffer from certain deficiencies

With the application of the European regulationsn°178/2002 on January 1st, 2005, all the actors of the food chain must be mobilized to bring the maximum of guarantee and insurance to the final consumers, in terms of quality and safety. In the case of the Tunisian date sector, the traceability - as an approach of strategic management- appears like a managerial innovation which always comes within the phase of adoption. Our research comes within the scope of this framework. The aim of this research is to identify the determiners of the adoption of an approach of traceability with the example of the companies of date conditioning in Tunisia. So we present a modelling by suggesting associating the theory of the stakeholders to the theory of diffusion and adoption of the innovation. We discuss three generic propositions of research put forward by basing on a qualitative analysis with conditioning date companies considered as "pioneers" in tunisian traceability. The results of this research end up in the elaboration of a set of determiners of the adoption of the traceability with in the conditioning date companies’ link in Tunisia. It represents the characteristics of the traceability, the characteristics of the organization and, the characteristics of the environment such as specified in our model, to which it is advisable to add the fourth element stemming from the analysis of the interviews and which concerns the transversal factors

The relationships of these Muslim elites with the political power and with other social categories of Tunis (whether Muslim or not) are also taken up. Having both used private and unpublished records as well as public ones, this research endeavors to focus, through the study of its elites, on an urban and Muslim society, that of Tunis, on the eve of the 20th century

Full textAt the crossroads of the sociology of work, trade unionism, political crises and gender studies, this thesis, based on a long-term ethnographic survey of labour conflicts in international subcontracting, aims to shed new light on the reconfigurations of the Tunisian workers' movement during the revolutionary process that began in December 2010. While social science research on political crises in the Maghreb and the Middle East is abundant, the world of work remains a blind spot. Yet, during this period, Tunisian workers have massively burst onto the political stage: interrupting production, forming trade unions, occupying and sabotaging workplaces, and sometimes getting engaged in hunger strikes. This multi-site survey carried out in the textile, call centre and electronics sectors in Tunis, Mahdia, La Chebba and Sousse, enables us to grasp the workers' movement in its many dimensions: that of the protagonists, the companies and the union structures, and at the intersection of the social relations that run through it. While revolutions are mainly studied through the lens of social ruptures, this study, by seeking to sequence the events marking the workers' movement, reveals both its transformations and its continuities: its rhythms, its forms, its possibilities and its protest closures varying from one sequence to the next. In close contact with those involved in the struggle, this survey also highlights variations within each sequence: certain conflicts that were part of the same action repertoire did not lead to the same outcomes; some mobilizations were more inventive than others; some players were excluded from the union arena, while others made a “career” of it. A gendered reading of these dynamics is essential to understand them

Full textSince the first years of independance, the tunisian administration menaged to have several consultative bodies at central, regional and local levels. This had to be so because of the gowing interventionism of the state, of the very high specialized tests of the administration and for a better protection of the administred. These bodies either have to coordinate between the activities of the administration's different services or to provide it with the clarifications necessary for its decision, making or to make possible a compromise between the representatives of contradictory interets or at last to provide the administred with the means of defending themselves in case they are questioned by the administration. Consulting these advisory bodies can be facultative or compulsory. When it is compulsory, the administration has to ask for it before making its decision if it has to obtain a conformable notice from the consultative body its decision is illegal if it deos not abide by the meaning of the notice. The notice can't stend a suit for power abuse, but it is always possible to tackle it indirectly throug the connex decision, except for the "reglementaire" decree which can not stand any. In tunisia, advisory administration is still in the beginning. It does not have its proper place yet. Decisions are frequently taken without proceeding to the necessary consultations. This situation is due to the nature of the political regime (a single parti system and no counter power available). Besids this administration is not quite organized since some bodies are over-sollicited, some others are simply forgotten. No doubt a long time as well as the change of the state structure are necessary for the improvement of such an administration

Full textTunisia has not escaped the global privatization movement. Taking into account the weight of its public companies and foreign debt and also the conditionality of international donors (World Bank and IMF), Tunisia has embarked on a vast program of privatization. This thesis work purpose is to identify the objectives, terms and stakes that conduct the Tunisian privatization process, and then comparing it to the implementation of the French privatization program. In the second part, the study describes the possible alternatives to privatization, particularly the public-private partnerships that are widely available today

Full textAt the exact opposite intuitions according to which regional disparity is an unavoidable consequence of the dilemma of winners and losers, construction of inequalities in Tunisia is attributed to real forces. The first force echoes the economic development model at work since structural adjustment. Indeed, the forced march towards liberalism and globalization zeal and speed in the field has significantly contributed to the widening gap between the coastal and deep Tunisia. The polarization of economic activity which falls within the logic of productivity growth, has not exercised the desired ripple effect which helped to dig the groove separating the rest of the coastal territory. The second source of inequality raised by the thesis is the institutional environment. Indeed, the quality of regulation, political stability and the low participation of the local population in the implementation of development policies and in political life have significantly contributed in the construction of regional inequalities in Tunisia. However, economic growth is pro-poor generally. She contributed in reducing inequalities. In terms of economic policy recommendation, it seems imperative to correct if not reduce to a minimum inequality, to review the liberal flight of the Tunisian economy and its integration into the global economy pushed by a state interventionism (rethink investment incentives in the deeper regions, direct public investment in infrastructure to deeper areas ...). The second recommendation refers to the need for a shift towards a territorial development approach that gives pride of place to local stakeholders in the design and implementation of development policies. The third recommendation is the need for a revision of the horizontal and vertical modes of governance to promote the regionalization process and improve the quality of economic and political institutions

Full textThe imaginary of the French people who emigrated in Tunisia during the colonial period called the French protectorate was particularly rich as indicated by the myriad of testimonies from many authors who dabbled in writing it down on paper. This thesis seeks to study the Tunisian colonial era from a literary perspective through a systematic approach of the texts and the vision of the authors on the assented exile of French Tunisia. An exile, but also a return to the main land. For many of them who lived the end of the French protectorate, the difficulty was to move to a country which was their own, but not entirely. The choice of the analytical method relies on an imagology study of this matter which will assess the complex notion of imaginary from the myth-analysis point of view. Then the different components will be verified and applied to the context of colonial Tunisia. Regarding the latter topic, literature seems to be the ideal approach to study and highlight the richness of the imaginary of the French Tunisians through the great diversity of texts available : memoirs, testimonies, novels, personal documents, photographes, etc. Finally, the personal experience of the author in the context of the French protectorate in Tunisia will allow to consider the topic via analytical objectivity and a subjective analysis
