The reissuing of Mubin Sheppard’s Tunku: His Life and Times, the biography of Malaysia’s ‘Father of Independence’ Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (1903-1990), by Pelanduk Publications, one of Malaysia’s leading publishing houses, could not be timelier as Malaysians and their friends had been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the country’s freedom from colonialism. This work by Sheppard, a historian of Malaysian culture and heritage who was a close friend of the Tunku, became a classic after it was published by Pelanduk for the first time - in the present version - in 1995.

Abstract:
Despite popular representations of Tunku Abdul Rahman as an avuncular political personality, he was also an astute policy practitioner. This was evident in how he, in pursuit of Malayan interests, calibrated Malaya's foreign policy posture towards Jakarta in a manner that not only displayed little appreciation of Indonesian sensitivities, but also undermined its political interest and status as the major power in Southeast Asia, thus contributing to bilateral tension.

Abstract:
Number One Wisma Putra celebrates more than half a century of service to Malaysia by the country’s Foreign Service. Its humble origins date back to July 1956 as External Affairs Ministry of the then Federation of Malaya, before Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj became the first Minister of Foreign Affairs in September 1957 - only ten days after independence from Britain. Today, No. 1 Wisma Putra happens to be the address of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country’s new administrative capital, Putrajaya, which is only a short drive south of Kuala Lumpur, where the Ministry had its beginnings. As pointed out in the foreword by Malaysia’s former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who from 1991 to 1999 served also as the country’s foreign minister, ‘Wisma Putra’ is the popular non-official name for the Ministry, thus fondly remembering its founder Tunku Abdul Rahman, the ‘Father of Malaysia’s Independence’.

Abstract:
The National Defense Policy reflects the desire of every country to defend its strategic interests and to preserve national security. It is a manifestation of the goal of protecting the security and strategic interests of a country. In the Malaysian context, the three main thrusts are the thrusts of the Malaysian Defense Policy namely the national strategic importance, defense principles, and defense concepts. There were three major changes in the Malaysian Defense Policy that began with the era of Tunku Abdul Rahman (1957-1970), Tun Razak / Tun Hussein Onn (1970-1980) and Tun Mahathir era (1981-2003). The Tunku Abdul Rahman era 1957 until 1970 was pro-western (dependency). During the reign of Tun Razak from 1970 to 1976 and Tun Hussin Onn from 1976 to 1980, the defense policy changed to Neutrality (neutrality). In contrast to the Mahathir era administration, his defense base tends to form self-reliance. The change of Mahathir's defense policy can be seen in the Procurement of his weaponry that has affected Malaysia as a developing country that is so vocal and bold to speak. In the international ring, his voice is so echoed to voice the aspirations of the Third World and the commitment shown above the other leaders. Self-reliance under Tun Mahathir's administration made Malaysia's defense aspect more modern until Tun Mahathir became references and attention throughout the world, especially the Third World.

Abstract:
This research begins with the assumption that the political ideology of Malaysian leaders influences the design of state mosques and seeks to investigate the relationship between Malaysian leaders political ideas of Islam and their influence on the design of state mosques in Malaysia. Even though studies undertaken of state mosque in other Muslim countries show a relationship between state mosque and politics, there are no studies that describe the influence of politics on the state mosques in Malaysia. To date, the research on the state mosque in Malaysia focuses on six main aspects: these are descriptions of the state mosque in regard to its historical development; documentation of the state mosque in the form of measured drawings; classification of state mosque styles; theory for designing the state mosque based on religious sources; discussion on the technical aspects of the state mosque design; and discourse on the role and function of the state mosque in relation to social aspects. In contrast, the aim of this research is to determine: How are the leaders political ideas of Islam expressed through the design of state mosques in West Malaysia? A case study approach as defined by Yin (2003) was applied. Evidence for the case studies has been collected from archival records to gather data regarding political development and building policy which relates to three prominent leaders in Malaysia –Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak and Tun Mahathir Mohamad - while on-site observation, state mosque documents and interview were methods to collect evidence for three state mosques in Malaysia, which are the National Mosque, Penang State Mosque and Putra Mosque. Since this research deals with specific interpretations of the state mosque as a social-physical phenomenon and the need to understand how the structural relationship exists between the state mosques and social culture, a multi-disciplinary logic of inquiry combining the interpretive and structuralist paradigms was adopted. In association, a framework incorporating both semiotics and hermeneutics were developed to analyse, firstly, the symbolic meaning embedded in the design of the state mosques and their mundane settings and, secondly, to reveal the leaders intentions and associated actions during the creation of the state mosques. An analysis of the data exposed that there is a dialectic relationship between the leaders and the design of the state mosque in the period of post-independence in Western Malaysia. The investigation of the three state mosques also suggested that the political ideas of Islam as propounded by Malaysian leaders have a profound effect on determining the design of the state mosque. This study, therefore, offers new insights, which not only add to knowledge in this field by widening and strengthening the understanding of political and architectural historical theory in Malaysia, but also are valuable for range of associated fields including architectural semiotics and non verbal communication. This is because this research reveals deep understandings of the built form and material environment operating as a sign in a cultural and social context.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates how the same questions of ideology, identity, and institutions that complicated Singapore's integration has remained pertinent throughout Malaysia's development. It analyzes ways in which the state, economy, and society of Malaysia have all changed structurally and significantly over time. Most especially the installation of the Barisan Nasional (National Front, BN) coalition in the early 1970s. The chapter talks about the Alliance, Socialist Front, and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PMIP or PAS) that offered ideological alternatives until episodic ethnic unrest peaked with riots following the 1969 elections. It also mentions Tunku Abdul Rahman who used the violence as justification to suspend the nearly completed election and declare emergency rule.

Abstract:
These days, technology is growing rapidly, and the market has been introduced with lots of fascinating ways to interact with computers. The advancement of deep learning models and hardware technology also enables more applications with fancy features to be built. The importance of hand gesture recognition has increased due to the prevalence of touchless applications. However, developing an efficient recognition system needs to overcome the challenges of hand segmentation, local hand shape representation, global body configuration representation, and a gesture sequence model. This paper proposed an interactive dashboard that could react to hand gestures. This is also an initiative of the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Smart Campus project. Deep learning models were investigated in this research and the optimal model was selected for the dashboard. In addition, 20BN Jester Dataset was used for the dashboard development. To set up a more user-friendly dashboard, the data communication stream between the captured input stream and commands among the devices will also be studied. As to achieve higher responsiveness from the dashboard, evaluation on data communication protocols which were used to pass the input data included in the study.
