Full textThe issue of the protection of international watercourses is becoming increasingly important on a global level. The international community is aware of the need to preserve the quality and quantity of water contained by the rivers, and the importance it has for the economies and survival of populations. In the Middle East, the situation is most critical, this arid and semi-arid region is experiencing a drought more severe and knows a parallel population growth, factors that explain a scarcity of water. We should also add a particularly tense political climate, which prevents a joint and shared management, fair and reasonable of resources. States, rather than understanding the urgency of protecting a common interest, prefer to defend their national interests. This thesis aims to study the legal regime of the Middle East's three major international rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, the Jordan and the Nile, a multidisciplinary approach (river law, the right to state sovereignty , the law of treaties, the law of State responsibility and environmental law ...), in order to identify gaps and shortcomings. The rest of the thesis is devoted to the study of what might encourage, in the recent developments in international law, the establishment of a harmonious protection, equitable and sustainable of the water resources in Middle East, through a regional cooperation between the concerned States and between regional and international actors

Full textPottery from the White Nil, technical and cultural study of the archaeological prospection from jebel Aulia to El Geteina (on the right bank of the White Nil), a fieldwork based research carried out in an area that strechtes along the eastern bank of the White Nil, from jabl Aulia in the north to the city of El Gateina in the south, and between the road linking Khratoum to Kosti to the east and the White Nil to the west. The White Nil is the main route linking the southern Sudan to the center and north. Little archaeological work has been done in this area, hence the importance of this study. The choice of this area was motivated by two reasons : one related to the threats of urban and agricultural development on archaeological sites without protection, the other to its loaction between the archaeological area of Khartoum and the archaeological sites of the White Nil. The objective of this study is to record and describe archaeologically and geographically sites in the region, and then analyze and make a typology of the pottery. We also seek an answer to the question regarding extensions of Meroe civilization in this region. These objectives will reveal later the extent of the link between the regions to the north and south of the country and the existence of a close link between the White Nil sites of Shabona, Rabak and Jabel Tomat with Neolithic. and Mesolithic sites of Khartoum and in particular their pottery. Some studies in the areas of El Geteina and El-Kawa showed the link between these areas and the Meroitic

Full textOur study focuses on the avulsion process, the key process for the depocenter migration of stacked channel-levee systems in the deepsea. To present, the avulsïon process has been explained as the abandonment of a channel (parent channel) and the birth of a new one (new channel). A true indice of avulsion has been given by the detection of the HARPs, a seismic term known since the 80s for highamplitude reflection packets at the base of new channel-levee systems. The HARPs are suggested, in analogy to the studies from ODP Leg 155 of the Amazon Fan, to be sandy deposits in lows adjacent to breached parent channels. Our present work, by re-visiting the Amazon Fan with multichannel high-resolution seismic data, highlights the great complexity of the HARPs architecture and their lithological heterogeneity. The study of some specific zones within the Zaïre Fan allowed revealing both the earliest stages of an avulsion process related to levee breaches and first splays linked to unconfined flows on the levee, and the latest stage of this process, with the first levee deposition and evolution following the HARPs deposition. These results provide new insights for the understanding of the processes involved during an avulsion event (levee breach, HARPs accumulation, levee aggradation). By describing the inter-relationship of the different architectural sub-bodies of the HARPs and giving details on both the earliest and latest stages of the avulsion, our results also provide clues to refine the previous conceptual models and reach a higher resolution knowledge of this process

Full textThe mechanisms controlling fine sediments dynamics in estuaries are complex because of the multiplicity of active processes and their diverse interactions, most often not well understood. The study of fine sediment dynamics embodies a number of fundamental environmental issues. Due to their strong affinity with a large range of metallic and organic contaminants, fine-grained deposits are capable of concentrating pollutants from watersheds and from the sea, both of which are sources of increasing coastal zone hazards (from agriculture, maritime traffic. . . ). Accretion of estuarine deposits leads to mudflat formation, and then salt marsh establishment, thus forming habitats of supreme importance in the European community. The lasting biodiversity and resource value of these habitats are at risk from accelerated estuarine infilling. The objective of this thesis has been to highlight key points of the functioning of an estuary co-dominated by waves and tides, and to gain better insight into the interactions underlying fine-grained sedimentation processes. The approach is highly methodological, based on the application of a cross-disciplinaryassemblage of tools. The study shows that wave influence, though significant, is restricted to the esturary mouth. The esturary exhibits freshwater/salinity mixing and the presence of a turbidity maximum resulting from a combination of tidal asymmetries. This tidal pumping is capable of very widely redistributing the sediment within the estuary, notably via macrofloc dynamics. Interactions between tidal asymmetry and morphology are complex and, through generated residual transport, condition the evolution of the estuarine system. The tidal dynamics are particularly well recorded by the characteristics of deposited sediments and their clear rhythmic pattern. The monitoring has shown the constant availability of sediment in the water column and the key role of tidal channels as vectors of sediment circulation. The input of sediment over the intertidal zones is governed by elevation within the tidal frame. The different results have highlighted the importance of Spartina in sediment trapping mechanisms over salt marshes and their seasonal variability but also the medium-term impacts of high sedimentation rates on benthic biocoenoses. At longer timescales, investigation of the consequences of this accretion highlights the effect of compaction of the sedimentary profile. The stratigraphic input from this work takes into account conclusions from the Holocene history of the neighbouring Flemish coastal plain, and confirms the advanced stage of infilling of the Authie esturay. The research on the Authie estuary may be summarised by a model of an estuary with mixed wave-tide hydrodynamic dominance pertinent to temperate macrotidal estuaries located in sand-rich tidal seas with storm wave influence, which is precisely the case of English Channel estuaries. Climatic perturbations and natural variability initiated within the frame of global change result in increasing human pressures on estuaries, thus generating potential risks. Tacking these pressures and risks calls for a holistic approach to the study of estuarine ecosystems, not only at the regional scale of the English Channel, but also in the world context

Full textThe governance of the Nile Basin is a challenge as it is to reconcile the interests of the eleven riparian States. Its instability is due to the existence of a plurality of legal regimes on the Nile. The development process of the agreements on the Nile, explains their differences. The riparian States have established a cooperative framework called the Nile Basin Initiative, to try to converge their interests and promote regional development. Nevertheless, the study of the positive law on the Nile, demonstrates a great legal and political instability. Therefore, we have tried to find out a way to overcome these differences in a sustainable governance of the Nile Basin. The harmonization of legal regimes on the Nile could be a viable solution. This is based on the qualification of the Nile waters of Regional Public Good, which requires the rehabilitation of the concept of sovereignty, which led to suggest the establishing of a "common sovereignty on the water."

Full textTurbidite systems are active when they are fed by sediments transported from the shelf to the basin floor. This sediment transfer is mainly controlled by climate and sea level. Fluctuations of these control factors since the Last Glacial Maximum are recorded within turbiditic systems by periods of high deposition separated by condensed intervals. In addition, morphological control and sedimentary processes are internals factors explaining the spatial variability of the sedimentary record along the turbidite system. The Rhone turbidite system is classified among Mud-rich systems; it is the largest sediment body in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean). It results mainly from the accumulation of sediments supplied by the Rhone River. It is presently inactive because the head of the Petit Rhone canyon is situated at about 70 km from the river mouth. Through analyses of 21 sediment cores collected along this system, we characterized, (1) the turbiditic activity during the last 25 kyr, (2) the role of climatic and sea-level controls on the turbiditic activity, (3) the role of internal factors such as the morphology on the spatial variability of the turbiditic deposition. Our study is based on (1) the realization of a chronostragraphical framework based on oxygen isotope (δ18O) fluctuations, Ca/Fe ratio and 14C AMS dating, (2) the characterization of lithofacies. The results show that: (1) sea-level is the main control factor on the connection between the Rhone canyon head and Rhone River mouth. The Rhone turbidite system is definitely a “low-stand dominant system” in the terminology of Covault et al. (2010). (2) the rapid and short sea-level rise at about 19 ka (19-ka meltwater pulse) is recorded by a shift from hyperpycnal flows to lower-concentration turbidites. (3) The presence of hyperpycnites demonstrates a direct connection between the Petit-Rhone canyon head and the Rhone River mouth favoured by sea-level low-stand conditions from 24 to 19 ka. They also demonstrate the competence of the Rhone River to generate hyperpycnal flows during flood episodes. (4) the morphology of the Rhone turbidite system controls the confinement of the turbidity currents and results in various arrangements of lithofacies

Full textCenozoic is marked by climatic instability and accelerating continental uplifts. Increasing sediment yield is generated, buffered and transferred by river to the deep sea. Four of the major turbidite systems in the world are located on the northern and the western margins of the Indian Ocean: the Ganges-Brahmaputra, the Indus, the Zambezi and the Tanzanian systems. This work aims to understand forcings affecting sedimentation and morphology of two main turbidite systems (Tanzanian system and Ganges-Brahmaputra system) and results have been compared with their nearest neighbors (respectively Zambezi and Indus). Based on a multiproxies approach in both area, our main results are as follows: (1) during Cenozoic, tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Tanzania margin led to the development of an atypical turbidite system wherein morphology attest of a strong structural control; (2) the Ganges-Brahmaputra system has a sedimentary activity mainly forced by sea level variations. This turbidite system records variations in many forcings impacting sedimentation from the catchment to the deep sea. Turbidite system activity and architecture revealed a strong variability mainly linked to the geodynamic and physiographic context of each studied margin. It appears necessary to integrate all forcings (affecting both the catchment and the deep sea) in the study and the understanding of sedimentary activity in a turbidite system

Full textThis thesis is devoted to reconstruct the Quaternary history of African monsoon and its influences on suspended loads of the Nile River and dust production in Sahara. The materials used in this study come from two sites (MD90-964 in the eastern Levantine Basin and ODP Site 964 in the Ionian Sea) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Based on clay mineralogy, grain sizes, carbonate and Corg contents, and XRF core scanning analyses of Core MD90-964, we have reconstructed history of the Nile suspended discharges, precipitation in North Africa, and Nile paleoflood events during the last 1.75 Ma. On the basis of the planktonic foraminiferal Delta(18)O record of Core MD90-964, we have established for the first time in the eastern Mediterranean Sea a high-resolution planktonic foraminiferal (G. ruber) Delta(18)O record that penetrates the Quaternary period. The ODP Site 964 allows us to establish the variations of Saharan dust inputs to the eastern Mediterranean Sea during the last 1.5 Ma. Our results indicate that both fluvial sediments from the Nile and Saharan eolian dust inputs to the eastern Mediterranean Sea are greatly influenced by the variability of African monsoon. The glacial/interglacial cycles and other orbital-scale climatic events, such as the “Mid-Pleistocene Transition”, can also affect climate changes in North Africa to a minor extent
