Full textThe link between Paris and Turkey was founded when both countries opened diplomatic relationships in the 17th century. Since then, the French culture, language and literature has been key to the Turkish intelligentsia, the first victim of the political instability the country is experiencing since 1960. Paris played the role of a window into the Western world, driving generations of writers to cultivate the myth of the Ville Lumière, city of love, revolutions and freedom. The debate on the place of Turkey in Europe justified a close look into the images of Paris in the contemporary Turkish literature. This study focused on three contemporary writers, who all worked under the shadow of Attilâ Ilhan the precursor, who died in 2005. Demir Özlü, the nauseated loner, for whom Paris will always remain an inaccessible dream, Nedim Gürsel, the prolix lover who turned the city into his mistress, and Enis Batur, the scientific explorer who observed each and every of its stones, have each in their own way placed Paris at the heart of their literary production. In doing so, they preserve the special status the French capital city enjoys in the Turkish collective imagination. Through their exiles and wanderings, they serve as a bridge between Turkey, whose traditions are grounded in the Middle-East, and Paris, which incarnates a Western world that is depicted either as flamboyant or decadent but will always remain obsessive. The fact that they are constantly split between two languages, cultures and places, Paris on the one hand, Istanbul and Turkey on the other hand, pulls them into a gnawing and permanent quest of their identity of human being and writer

Full textThe zodiac has been known since ancient times but it was the Greek astronomers of the Hellenistic period who determined forms after the mythological figures and animals. The zodiac iconography inherited by the 8th and 9th century arabic-persian astronomers was largely inspired by ancient traditions. They subsequently updated it. Indeed, the iconography of the zodiac constellations had its codifier: the astronomer Abd al-rahman al-suff, then in the service of the buyid prince Adud al-dawla, who wrote “the book of the fixed stars”. The purpose of this iconography was mainly didactic, allowing constellations in the sky to be identified, hence a number of features characterizing the figures in all the copies made until the 19th century. A second type of zodiac appeared in the manuscripts starting in the 13th century: the astrological zodiac, which had a radically different purpose. The astrological zodiac was then used by astrologers to elaborate horoscopes but was often found in late 12th century east Anatolia or Persian metallic objects. Like the manuscripts as of the 14th century, these objects offer two types of iconography: - the first shows the signs conjugated with the planets in their various forms of associations, the most frequent being the planet associated to its house sign. - the second, frequently seen in miniatures starting in the 14th century, offers a new zodiac, purged so to speak, in which only some of the signs are perfectly associated to their planet: these are mixed series. We have underlined the major role of a focal point from which, we believe, a good part of the arabic-persian astrological zodiac may have originated: the city of Harran, in east turkey, whose inhabitants worshiped stars until the 9th century. The practice of the cult survived until the city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. It was at this time that this so distinctive iconography of the planets and the zodiac started appearing and spreading. The zodiac is not restricted to the two areas of astronomy and astrology. It also extends to other forms, among which the pictorial and mystical conception of heavens symbolized by the bearers of the divine throne. It was also used to make talismans, just like the ancient Arabic moon zodiac…

Full textIn order to better understand how the image of Turkey has been constructed in the minds of westerners, we have analyzed French literary production in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as it reflects in inheritance of prejudices deeply anchored in the French culture. To begin, we have chosen to define the notion of exoticism. This first approach has allowed us to note that Turkey, in the eyes of French writers, possesses a certain number of attributes as well as repulsions, which has led them to take a positive or negative stance vis-a-vis Turkish exoticism. Secondly, we have attempted to define the esthetic orientations of the writers in question, noting a use of relatively fixed writing techniques, where a witnesses event mixes with fiction, where the objectivity of descriptions mixes with the subjectivity of their authors, and where the cliché reigns, particularly when describing the geography of the country and the mode of life of its inhabitants. Finally, if esthetics is unanimous amongst the writers, their ideological slant brings them to pass more nuanced judgements concerning the political aspect of things. A presentation of historical facts and their confrontation with the affirmations of the French writers allows one to understand how manipulation has been installed and how a negative image of Turkey has been fabricated

Full textIn the aftermath of the foundation of the republic of Turkey (1923), cinema, a new discovery, was one of the art forms that influenced the masses most. Following the early films made with popular approaches, several important names came to the fore in the making of cinema as art. Among contemporary directors who have developed their work through the years with this scope, omer Kavur is immediately noticed. This Ph. D dissertation analyzes the significance of Kavur in this country's cinema, and attempts to define the connection of this cinema to the global context and its specific place in the history of turkish cinema. The experience of having worked with Kavur as assistant director, having intimately witnessed the process of his search for originality, and participated in this process both physically and mentally, has been shaped into this dissertation. The search for identity in turkish cinema and the distancing of the viewer from his own cinema within a contracting economy and weakened box-office, are explained with data. It becomes all the more important today that, despite the disappearance of export markets, as for many other countries cinemas, Kavur attempts to make art films. The effort to reach the inner roots of the mystical content of "secret face", which forms the main theme, aims at the same time to search for and determine the place of turkish cinema in the contemporary world

Full textHaving identified a blind spot in general and comparative literature, this work proposes to introduce Turkish literature as a questioning site within the field which also interrogates the regional comprehensibility of European literature. The globalization of literary criticism allows us to locate the reception of European literature within the work of a contemporary Turkish novelist in the wider context of an unbalanced literary exchange between on the one hand an ancient and rich literary space and the Turkish periphery on the other. The particularities of this social and historical field to which Orhan Pamuk is affiliated account for his trajectory in world literature, while also shedding light on his ethos as a reader of the European library, itself characterized by eccentricity and an inherited dependency. It follows that studying Orhan Pamuk’s use to the European novel brings to light a mimetic, a generic and an architextual use, as shown by his rewriting of Mann’s Buddenbrooks. As for his use of the Dostoevskian novel, it highlights the structural homology of the two former Empires in relation to Europe, and lays bare to Orhan Pamuk Turkey’s “demons” in all their legibility. The Pamukian novel presents itself as a poetical negotiation with the dependency and eccentricity of Turkish literature and the Turkish novel. Rewriting the canon (Proust, Dante, Dostoevsky) with glowing intertextual poetics, Pamuk captures the European literary inheritance ; these taklit poetics, replete with fictional games and playful sham facilitate the conversion of this net of mimetic dependency into a new novelistic catharsis from which the “fiction” of the Pamukien author emerges

Full textAt the end of a genocidal experience like the armenian catastrophe or the holocaust, witnesses have to reconstruct themselves, both physically and morally, in a society that has lost its ethical foundations: all meanings or references seem ruined. each deportee has to find a way to get his humanity and his identity (denied by his torturers) back. this reconstruction, from inhuman to human, shows a difficult behaviour between speaking and silence, and bring to the fore the inexpressible nature of the genocidal experience. witnesses experience moreover the dilemma between a disabling memory and an essential obligation to remember. it appears that the crime is more unreportable than indescribable: the experience is so extreme that it seems to annihilate all chance of understanding from a third party. then, the survivors choose to write down their experiences, modifying receipt concepts, and trying to build the new foundations of an original literary esthetics, in which art, imagination and truth can coexist. the armenian survivors, having to deal with the denial of the turkish genocide, refuse to write literary testimony and seem to censure their own works and limit, in spite of themselves, the impact they should encounter. only culture and its references, last link between the deportee and a third party, manages to go beyond the ethical limit that armenian survivors assert themselves. culture, subjected to doubt and revealed because of genocides, is confirmed as a power able to sublimate the most awful existence and the most unlikely writing
