Abstract:
A história da linguística é narrada habitualmente como uma série de “revoluções” em que um paradigma novo substituiria por completo seu predecessor, cujo trabalho deveria ser deixado à margem dos desenvolvimentos atuais. Recorrendo a uma análise do verbete sobre etimologia na Encyclopédie dos iluministas franceses do século 18, é possível negar essa suposta linearidade dos avanços teóricos e metodológicos da linguística e reconhecer que eles se fazem por acúmulo e desdobramentos cíclicos, jamais de forma abrupta.
