Abstract:
A medico-ethnobotanical survey was conducted among the Senegalese migrant communities of Turin (Piedmont, NW Italy) and their peers living in Adeane (Casamance, Southern Senegal), both among healers and laypeople. Through 27 in-depth interviews, 71 medicinal plant taxa were recorded and identified in Adeane and 41 in Turin, for a total of 315 different folk remedies recorded in Senegal and 62 in Turin. The large majority of the medicinal plants recorded among Senegalese migrants in Turin were also used in their country of origin. These findings demonstrate the resilience of home remedies among migrants and consequently the role they should have in shaping public health policies devoted to migrant groups in Western Countries, which seek to seriously take into account culturally sensitive approaches, that is, emic health-seeking strategies.

Gordon, Jessica Ann. "'La Sposa trionfante' : entertainments for princely marriages in Turin, Mantua and Florence, 1608." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1991. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34727/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the pageantry and entertainments which took place in 1608 on the occasion of three aristocratic marriages, those of Princesses Margherita and Isabella of Savoy to Francesco Gonzaga of Mantua and Alfonso d'Este of Modena and of Maria Maddalena of Austria to Cosimo II de' Medici of Tuscany. Volume I comprises: a brief survey of the political situation in northern Italy in 1608, including the marriage negotiations between savoy, Mantua and Modena; a discussion of attitudes to women current in the Renaissance as reflected in marriage pageantry; a full account of the pageantry and entertainments celebrating these marriages, drawing on archival material and contemporary published descriptions; a discussion of the interpretation of pageantry, the response of the spectators, and pageantry's value as political propaganda and as a means of promoting and spreading artistic development. Volume II is an edited collection (in Italian and French) of the relevant documents from Italian state archives and full transcriptions of the three principal accounts published in 1608. The thesis concludes that there is a close relationship between political changes and developments in pageantry. The rise of absolutism as the dominant form of government in Italy at the end of the sixteenth century is parallelled by the glorification of the ruler in pageantry. The stability and prosperity of the state come to be identified with the security and strength of the ruler. The thesis offers a new approach to the role of women in Renaissance politics and society through examination of marriage pageantry. Women are represented as counsellors and mediators, rarely taking action, but promoting peace and, through their role as mothers of future heirs, ensuring stability and prosperity in the state.

Abstract:
Recent scholarship emphasises that the exercise of political power by royal and aristocratic medieval women was commonplace. Building upon this work, my thesis examines the life of Adelaide of Turin (c.1014/24-1091), who inherited, and ruled, the mark of Turin. Her importance has often been overlooked however, particularly in Anglophone historiography. Older scholarship tends to focus on Adelaide in terms of her connection with the Savoyard dynasty (who later became kings of Italy), or on the rise of regional states. These traditional histories do not take account of the central issues with which I am concerned: gender and cultures of power. In focusing on Adelaide – and gender – my thesis illuminates wider issues, relating to the exercise of power in the eleventh century, as well as to imperial politics, and religious change. Part I of the thesis considers Adelaide’s role in dynastic and imperial politics. Particular attention is paid to Adelaide’s acquisition and maintenance of power, and to the marital alliances forged between Adelaide’s dynasty and the imperial family. Through focusing on Adelaide key political events are reassessed, including two crises in the reign of her son-in-law, Henry IV of Germany (his attempt to repudiate his wife in 1069, and the events at Canossa in 1077). Revising the commonly held view that Adelaide and her dynasty had close ties with Savoy, Part II focuses on Adelaide’s power in Turin. Adelaide’s religious patronage and support of monastic reform are examined, as are her dealings with her officers and administration, her relationship with local elites, and her role in the administration of justice. Adelaide dominated the political landscape of Turin, and played key roles in imperial and papal politics. She was such an important non-royal ruler that (in preference to the more usual term, ‘lordly woman’) she is best described as a ‘princely woman’.

Abstract:
Sigismondo D’India, (1582? -1629?) a contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi, was one of the major composers of the early XVIIth century and one of the founding fathers of modern music. This thesis aims at setting him against a background which requires some reminiscing and updating, that of the court of Turin, where the musician settled between 1611 and 1623. It was the most fruitful period of his musical career, the study of which addresses three issues: music, patronage and nobiliary identity.I shall first study the movements of musicians, artists, printers and musical sources, and shall analyse besides some works by the composer. It appears that Sigismondo D’India, together a singer, a guitar-Player, a composer and a poet, stands out as one of the boldest and the most idiosyncratic musicians of his days. His musical career goes hand in hand with artistic patronage, which made his travelling easier, connected the various cities accommodating the musician and his dedicatees and facilitated creative emulation. The study of patronage through D’India’s creativity in music points out, among other things, the numerous relationships between him and his dedicatees. Finally, through the notion of nobiliary identity, I shall focus on the way in which the composer contributed to building up the cultural identity of a court while building up his own status as a nobleman. The nobiliary identity can thus be considered a first step toward national identity. I also aim at showing that D’India was perfectly up to the role of gentleman-Musician, and that his music contributed to building a model of urbanity

Cuxac, Mario. Thesis, Lyon 2, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LYO20022/document.

Abstract:
This work studies the turinese journalistic world during fascist system, especially the second decade. This decade coincide with the rise of the consensus (1929-1936) before the first time of contestation (1936-1940). The italian journalism is more and more controlled by the political authorities. The repression of the national and regional papers, and then the organization, standardization and institutionalization of the press, change drastically the journalism background. In view of this, this work focuses on collective and individual trajectories, with Turin as study place. The political, social and cultural influences of Turin make this city a particular place for the fascism, hard to “normalize”, and which possess two of the principal papers of the country (the Gazzetta del Popolo and La Stampa). The prosopographical study of the 278 identify journalists allows to put in perspective social characteristics (geographical origins, level of schooling etc...). The national and regional political connections light up the moving mark between politic and journalism and allow to replace the journalism question in the ampler setting of fascist regime and his ambiguities (between control, surveillance and repression, on one hand, and limits of totalitarianism of the other hand). The prosopographical study shows also a clear continuity of journalist between liberal and fascist periods, which questions the image of a harsh and total “purge” of the profession. In this context, the question of the place of the new journalistic generation, technically formed and permeated of fascist ideology, like Ermanno Amicucci and other fascist figures wanted, is central. Finally, the second part of the study takes an interest in a few singular trajectories and compared itineraries, which allows to illustrate a part of the diversity of turinese journalist attitudes, confronted with a regime who wants to institute a “new journalism model”. This trajectories intend to light up more specifically some of central aspects of journalistic world during the regime, like the purge of the years 1927-1931 (with for example Gino Pestelli, Leo Galetto or Santi Savarino),, the connections with local politic world (Angelo Appiotti, Leo Rea) or the racial laws and their impact (Deodoato foà). Between opposition and resignation, acceptation and negotiation, illusions and pragmatism, this biographical trajectories expose some varied positions, insert into a ampler context, which is the fascist ventennio, and his tragedies

Abstract:
Guarino Guarini's SS. Sindone Chapel and its relic offer the occasion to contemplate the paradox of the Incarnation in architecture--a dialectic of presence and absence. The thesis begins with a return to the Gospel accounts of the Empty Tomb, and examines the tradition of reliquary and martyria which the Chapel is inscribed in. The Incarnation theme is then traced to the late seventeenth century context of the Chapel and is considered in the Counter-Reformation context of Turin. The architectural organization of the theme of presence and absence is then explored in the Chapel. In Part II, an examination of Architettura Civile, Guarini's treatise on architecture, seeks to understand the theory of parallel projection (ortografia) with regards to the Chapel's themes. In the last stage Guarini's philosophical treatise sheds some interesting light on ortografia--Presence and absence weave an architectural idea, a geometrical theory, a theological mystery.

Park, Jungyoon. Thesis, Paris Est, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PEST3026.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of our work consists of questioning the role of consumption activities and spaces in local strategies for attractiveness. How is the concept of consumption involved in the dynamics of territorial development, in particular, in terms of the relation among “image,” “marketing” and “attractiveness”? How can we understand “the concept of new consumption space” such as it is employed by the cities that desire to reinforce their attractiveness? To emphasize the importance of consumption spaces in policies for local attractiveness, following a theoretical discussion (part one), we present three case studies (part two) exploring the questions of territorial attractiveness and consumption space: 1. Our first example is “Bercy Village,” a new Parisian consumption space created within the framework of the ZAC Paris Bercy at the end of the 1990s. 2. Second, we examine projects and strategies of urban regeneration in Turin, Italy. Turin is in search of attractiveness by reinforcing the aspects of culture, leisure and tourism. The importance of the attraction of mega-events and the development of global urban strategies (the Spina Centrale project and Turin’s Strategic Plan) is particularly stressed in this example. 3. Finally, we turn to the restoration project of the Cheonggye river (Cheonggyecheon). Seoul, the capital of South Korea, recently restored a forgotten river in an old commercial district, notorious for traffic jams and pollution. Through this project, Seoul was able to create a new attractive riverwalk for city users

Abstract:

Abstract:
Alfredo Casella and Gian Francesco Malipiero were significant voices among several Italian composers at the beginning of the twentieth century that promoted the revival of instrumental music. They hoped to create a national style beyond opera by expanding the instrumental repertory of their country. This document includes analyses and discussion of solo keyboard works by these composers created between 1914--1918, including Malipiero's Preludi autunnali and Risonanze, and Casella's Nove Pezzi and Sonatina. The author identifies important sources of style relevant to the musical language of Malipiero and Casella and assesses the quality and context of their contributions to the history of solo keyboard music in twentieth century Italy. These composers successfully revitalized a dwindling solo keyboard tradition through their own compositions, their work as pedagogues, and their leadership positions in the international musical community.

Abstract:
This paper assesses the incineration capacity requirement of the Province of Turin through a detailed analysis of the mass streams and the properties of residual Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Historical data series were elaborated to study the trend evolution of household generation and separate collection. Residual MSW material compositions were calculated for each year over an observed period and for planned scenarios. A waste properties model was applied to calculate the residual MSW chemical composition and the LHV. The analysis allows conclusions to be drawn about the design of the planned waste-to-energy plant and to estimate the required size and technology to be used. The results show that the use of grate furnace combustor appears to be more suitable than fluidized bed.

Abstract:
Low power adsorption chillers with low desorption temperatures deserve particular attention, because of the possibility of driving them with a solar thermal system integrated with buildings. The monitoring of a recent solar cooling installation in Turin, Italy, has pointed out the opportunity of developing a dynamic mathematical model, in order to simulate the transient performances of this plant. Focusing on the aforementioned low power-low temperature adsorption chiller category, this work proposes a numerical model of the systems, that include a novel zeolite as the adsorbent and water as the refrigerant fluid. The simulation results have been verified by means of the nominal values of one of the very few commercial chillers of this typology available on the market, and have compared with experimental data found in the literature for similar plants.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">In the mobility industry, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) combines fuel cell technology with batteries, allowing to overcome some limitations of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), such as the high recharging time and the high battery mass for applications requiring a high amount of energy (e.g., bus and heavy-duty vehicles). FCEVs have the possibility to collect several information from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) with relevant potential for vehicle efficiency improvement. Indeed, an online vehicle speed prediction inherently considering real-life factors such as traffic flow, driving path and driving style, allows for novel designs of Energy Management Systems (EMSs) for the optimal operations of the hybrid propulsion system.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In such context, this paper proposes an EMS based on Stochastic Model Predictive Control with Learning (SMPCL) to optimize the hydrogen consumption of a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), while guaranteeing the fulfillment of constraints on battery state of charge (SOC) and available power ranges, as well as maximizing the lifetime of fuel cell and battery. The proposed approach combines a scenario-based Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) for the propulsion system optimization with novel fuzzy Markov Chains (MCs) for short-term vehicle speed prediction. The effectiveness of this approach has been evaluated considering real driving speed acquisitions of a city bus operating in Turin (Italy) in different traffic flows and with different drivers. For comparison, several algorithms have been applied to a high-fidelity simulation plant representative of the FCEV propulsion system developed in GT-SUITE. The results show that SMPCL allows for relevant reduction of hydrogen consumption compared to classic rule-based approach, while getting also important benefits in terms of fuel cell and battery lifetimes. Moreover, hydrogen consumption is very close to the results of a global offline optimization algorithm used as benchmark (i.e., Dynamic Programming). Finally, next steps will include experimental validation of proposed approach on a real propulsion system in a test bench located in Turin (Italy).</div></div>
