Background: As of the year 2014, about 2.5 billion people globally lacked access to improved sanitation. The situation is even worse in the sub-Saharan African countries including Kenya. The practice of open defecation (OD) peaks beyond 72% of the population in Turkana County, Kenya, despite various interventions to end it. Methods: This article reports on both qualitative and quantitative aspects of a cross-sectional study. A partially mixed sequential dominant (quantitative) status was used to understand various socioeconomic factors associated with OD practice in Lodwar’s human settlements,

While archaeology and linguistics provide an important basis for the reconstruction of the early history of those parts of eastern Africa inhabited by pastoral societies, oral traditions also can make a valuable contribution. In this paper an examination of the traditions of the Turkana of north-western Kenya reveals an often remarkably sophisticated rendering of complex processes of origin and migration. Moreover, those traditions also embody insights into basic factors concerning the development and spread of pastoralism in East Africa that the methodologies of other disciplines have only re

Monumental architecture is a prime indicator of social complexity, because it requires many people to build a conspicuous structure commemorating shared beliefs. Examining monumentality in different environmental and economic settings can reveal diverse reasons for people to form larger social units and express unity through architectural display. In multiple areas of Africa, monumentality developed as mobile herders created large cemeteries and practiced other forms of commemoration. This article examines the unique role played by fishing, hunting and gathering groups in the survival strategy of the pastoralist societies in whose midst they live. During periods of extreme adversity, these groups acted as a refuge for destitute herdsmen and their households by absorbing population in periods of hardship and releasing individuals back into pastoralism when conditions once again allowed the accumulation of stock. Notably, the vaccine distribution disparity revealed that when push came to shove, in the case of global distribution, self-interested persons reached inward rather than reaching out, prioritized their needs, and acted to realize their self-interest. The diversity of African Conflicts has become a field of inquiry and drawn the attention of many scholars who wish to theorize the origin of these conflicts. Such conflicts were perceived, in many ways, as originating from a colonial legacy. However, conflicts over natural resources have always played a role in human society, and have retarded socio-development in many countries. Guy Martin acknowledges that, over the last 40 years, Africa has been and continues to be one of the most conflict-ridden regions of the world; this has resulted in untold human suffering (Guy, 2002:185-188). Abstract:
Abstract In Africa, nomadic pastoralism is in decline. For a variety of interacting political, social, economic, and environmental reasons, nomadic populations in the savanna lands of East Africa, numerous a century ago, have become increasingly sedentarized or settled. Former nomads now live on commercial ranches, in farming communities, on irrigation schemes, and as wage employees in towns and cities. Under these conditions, the nomadic cultural patterns and lifestyle are dramatically transformed, and pastoral traditions are either lost or become subordinated to other kinds of subsistence. These transformations in subsistence and behavior contribute to changes in health and well-being which, although not fully understood, include changes in nutrition, reproduction, growth of children, disease, work and activity patterns, social integration, and psychological status of the people.

Abstract:
Abstract The way of life of pastoral Turkana in the early 1980s was in many ways similar to that of those Turkana whom the first European adventurers encountered in the late 1800s. The arid, hot, and dusty Turkana climate made the region unattractive to Europeans and to Africans from more humid regions; traditional Turkana livestock herding is well suited to the region; Turkana District is far from major cities and administrative centers; and the Turkana people, deeply rooted in their own values and experiences, have always been difficult to control. However, external events during this century are as important as ecological and environmental constraints within Turkana for understanding the ‘backwardness,’ ‘intransigence,’ and ‘resistance to change’ so often attributed to Turkana. In this section, some of the political, historical, and socio-cultural factors are examined which contributed to the isolation of Turkana, and to the mutual hostility between the Turkana and Government, whether Colonial or National. The focus is on southern Turkana, but events in northern Turkana which had a major impact on the south are considered.

This research report is a case study on local peace practices within pastoralist communities in Kenya’s Turkana North (a subcounty of Kenya’s Turkana County). While significant existing research and analysis has focused on the concern that pastoralist communities across the African continent may contribute to growing violent conflict—and in particular to violent extremism—this report instead situates these communities within the theoretical framework of “everyday peace.” This framework centers on understanding the myriad ways in which ordinary people in conflict-affected contexts engage in sma
