Several experiments were conducted to identify the limiting amino acids in a 22% corn-soybean meal diet for poults from one to three weeks of age. Developmental changes in muscle metabolism as well as differences between muscles were also examined. Protein synthesis was determined using a ¹⁴C-tyrosine emulsion technique. Poor reproductive performance by turkey hens compared with chickens is partially due to the early cessation of egg production associated with the onset of incubation behavior. Abstract:
Prolapse of the oviduct is a common problem which results in 5% mortality of female male-line breeding turkeys that have been selected for high meat yield. Prolapse is rare in unselected traditional-line turkeys. Male-line turkeys are characterised by large multiple ovulating ovaries compared to traditional-line turkeys. It was proposed that the large ovary of the male-line resulted in a high plasma oestradiol concentration, which stimulated collagen degradation in the oviduct, impairing the structural integrity of the oviduct and predisposing the male-line to prolapse. Clostridial dermatitis (CD) is a multifactorial disease of rapidly-growing turkeys. Clostridium septicum (Cs) has been identified as the primary cause, although C. perfringens (Cp) has also been implicated. Pathogenesis is not fully understood; however, it is hypothesized that Clostridia translocate from the gastrointestinal tract and spread hematogenously to capillary beds of skeletal muscles. Intense genetic selection has produced a rapidly growing bird that is heavier and less active. This may predispose birds to development of CD due to positional restriction of blood flow to the cauda

Prolactin (PRL) is a highly versatile hormone in terms of its biological functions. In Galliformes, high levels of PRL are associated with incubation behaviour and hatching. It has been shown that these high levels of PRL were associated with an increased ratio of glycosylated PRL (G-PRL) versus non-glycosylated PRL (NG-PRL) in turkey (Bedecarrats et al., 1999a). This suggests that glycosylation of PRL is related to its proper function during those stages of life. However, the mechanism(s) controlling post-translational modification of PRL are unknown.
