Abstract:
Over the past two decades the contribution of postmigrant literature to Germany's literary landscape has attracted significant scholarly interest. This study investigates selected prose of Turkish-German authors. Six primary texts are reconceived as "transgressive" as they intervene in contemporary spatial, especially urban and global discourses. They employ diverse "spatial tactics" by citing conventional dichotomies (local-global, West-East) in order to abandon and replace them subsequently with dynamic views on space and time. This thesis proposes a new theoretical model of literary analyses in order to grasp the multidimensional aspects of space. Thereby, Lotman's cultural semiotics is used as springboard to expand the model throughout the readings of the texts. By including additional theories on space from disciplines such as gender studies (Gleber; Weigel), urban geography(Lynch; Downs/Stea), cultural-historical psychology (Nora; Assmann) and postcolonial criticism (Said), this analysis focuses on narrative strategies that challenge physical and conceptual concepts of boundaries. The originality of this approach lies in a perceptive, thorough reading of textual productions of space that refrains from pinpointing the texts as homogenous minority literature. The theoretical model examines spatial motifs and themes inherent in the primary texts while disregarding the alleged "foreignness" of the authors. Each of the main chapters discusses two works focusing on the dimensions gender-space, memory-space and geography-space: Emine S. Ozdamar's Die Brikke vom Goldenen Horn and Aysel Ozakin's Die Blaue Maske are analyzed as novels transgressing gender-coded urban spaces. The Berlin settings in Aras Oren's Berlin Savignyplatz and Zafer Senocak's Gefahrliche Verwandtschaft are conceived as multi-discursive fragments shedding new light on German "realms of memory". Yade Kara's Selam Berlin and Feridun Zaimoglu's Zwolf Gramm Gluck are investigated in relation to "glocal" dislocations and Oriental imaginations. This dissertation makes two key contributions to German literary studies: First, it proposes an alternative reading to the common practice of categorizing postmigrant literature by cultural heritage and generation by putting forward the idea that writers adopt manifold perspectives on spatial configurations. Second, by reading literary spaces through an alternate disciplinary lens, this dissertation reads the texts as multilayered complexities of spatial presentations and advocates a comparative, text-centered method of literary analysis.

Abstract:
The Ottoman Turks were of England's cultural others perhaps the most widely written about in the early modem period. The texts devoted to them cover a wide range of literary kinds, including history, drama, travel narrative, religious tract, newsbook, and ballad. This thesis concentrates pincipally on history writing and drama,a ddressing the image of the Turks as one of violent power, expressed in their immemorial hostility towards Christians, and in their internal dynastic relationships. The difference of the Turks is closely bound up in early modern writings with their descent, both in relation to distant forbears such as the Saracens and Scythians, and locally within the Ottoman dynasty. In approaching the early modern literature about the Turks as a series of interrelated lineages of power, my main aim has been to trace the relationship between the images of the ancient and modern Ottoman rulers. These two aspects of the early modern sense of the difference of the Turks are signalled by the division of the thesis into two parts, Part One, The Originall of the Turks, addressing ancient lineages, and Part Two The Image of the 0thoman Greatnesse, modern ones.

Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study of popularisation of feminism in Britain and Turkey in the 1990s. It focuses on selected British and Turkish women's magazines and examines the ways in which they engage with feminist concerns. The methodology is derived from feminist critical theory and cultural studies in order to address the dynamic interchange between feminist politics and mainstream or consumer women's interests and to examine the relationship between the concepts of feminism and femininity in contemporary women's magazines. The significance of the research lies in the identification of ways in which these texts incorporate and appropriate feminist discourses to the extent that the notion of femininity has increasingly come to be associated with feminist thought. The argument presented in this study is that the relationship between the producers of cultural texts and feminism, and producers and readers need to be taken into consideration to investigate how gendered subjectivities are reproduced in any given culture or crossculturally, by whom they are reproduced, in whose interests they work, and how they are constructed. This approach to popular culture will provide tools to articulate the political and cultural identities of women. The thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first, I discuss the evolution of feminist movements in the different historical and cultural contexts of Britain and Turkey by focusing on current feminist debates. The second chapter examines the women's magazine as a diverse form of popular culture with regard to its market and content. Contemporary women's magazine markets in these two countries and the ways in which these markets have been changed and expanded in conjunction with the development of feminist movements over the last two decades are discussed. This chapter also discusses the role of editors in defining a contemporary understanding of femininity for mass consumption and the editorial control of the magazine form as a commodity. The final chapter examines the dominant themes through which these texts have engaged with feminist issues. By comparing and contrasting the Turkish and British women's magazines I have found that specific conditions and politics engender a variety of diverse forms for the popularisation of feminism. Feminist themes and issues embedded in popular and commercial discourses are complex and various. However, I have found that the Turkish women's magazines primarily provide an outlet for women's voices and share a common goal with feminist politics of promoting female empowerment in the context of 1990s' Turkey. On the other hand, feminism is predominantly recognized as a cultural value by the British women's magazines in which feminism is often redefined through commodities and fetishized into a symbol of things. Their approach is defined as postfeminist which means the incorporation, revision and depoliticisation of feminist politics.

The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the image of the city of Diyarbakır as emerging from Kurdish and Turkish literature throughout the twentieth century. Diyarbakır city represents a highly contentious place in socio-political and cultural terms for the Kurdish vis-à-vis the Turkish imagined community. The first chapter is dedicated to the image of the city previous to the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923 as emerging from accounts of travellers from different ages and different languages. Then, in four different chapters, four different corpuses of Turkish and Kurdish literature are taken under the focus of the analysis. Each corpus allows the discussion of certain aspects and themes related to the city. Overall, each chapter and each corpus constitute a piece of the deconstructed literary image of the city, which is at the centre of this research. Since Diyarbakır is a contested city, its representations are deeply involved in processes of appropriation and symbolization of place. Therefore, in the shaping of literary Diyarbakır throughout the twentieth century, the conflicting political dynamics between the Turkish State and local Kurdish actors play a crucial role.

A partir du repérage d’un point aveugle de la littérature générale et comparée, ce travail vise à faire de la littérature turque le site d’interrogation de la discipline et de l’intelligibilité régionale de la littérature européenne. La mondialisation du discours critique permet de situer la réception de la littérature européenne chez un romancier turc contemporain dans le cadre des échanges littéraires inégaux entre un espace littéraire ancien et très doté et la périphérie turque. Les particularités de ce champ socio-Historique dont Orhan Pamuk est tributaire permettent de comprendre sa trajectoire exceptionnelle, mais aussi son ethos de lecteur de la bibliothèque européenne, marqué par l’excentricité et l’héritage de la dépendance. Dès lors, l’étude du recours d’Orhan Pamuk au roman européen met en valeur trois usages de celui-Ci : un usage mimétique, un usage générique et un usage architextuel dont témoigne la réécriture des Buddenbrook de Thomas Mann. Le recours au roman dostoïevskien met en lumière, quant à lui, l’homologie structurale de deux anciens empires dans le rapport à l’Europe, et révèle à Orhan Pamuk l’intelligibilité des « démons » de la Turquie. Le roman pamukien se présente alors comme une négociation poétique de la dépendance et de l’excentricité de la littérature et du roman turcs. La poétique intertextuelle très appuyée, dans un geste de réécriture du canon (Proust, Dante, Dostoïevski) permet la captation de l’héritage littéraire européen ; la poétique de la taklit, centrée sur les jeux fictionnels et les feintises ludiques, permet enfin de transmuer le complexe de dépendance mimétique dans une nouvelle catharsis romanesque de laquelle émerge la « fiction » de l’auteur pamukien
Having identified a blind spot in general and comparative literature, this work proposes to introduce Turkish literature as a questioning site within the field which also interrogates the regional comprehensibility of European literature. The globalization of literary criticism allows us to locate the reception of European literature within the work of a contemporary Turkish novelist in the wider context of an unbalanced literary exchange between on the one hand an ancient and rich literary space and the Turkish periphery on the other. The particularities of this social and historical field to which Orhan Pamuk is affiliated account for his trajectory in world literature, while also shedding light on his ethos as a reader of the European library, itself characterized by eccentricity and an inherited dependency. It follows that studying Orhan Pamuk’s use to the European novel brings to light a mimetic, a generic and an architextual use, as shown by his rewriting of Mann’s Buddenbrooks. As for his use of the Dostoevskian novel, it highlights the structural homology of the two former Empires in relation to Europe, and lays bare to Orhan Pamuk Turkey’s “demons” in all their legibility. The Pamukian novel presents itself as a poetical negotiation with the dependency and eccentricity of Turkish literature and the Turkish novel. Rewriting the canon (Proust, Dante, Dostoevsky) with glowing intertextual poetics, Pamuk captures the European literary inheritance ; these taklit poetics, replete with fictional games and playful sham facilitate the conversion of this net of mimetic dependency into a new novelistic catharsis from which the “fiction” of the Pamukien author emerges

Abstract:
This thesis presents a comparative and interdisciplinary investigation into the relationship between politics and the Turkish and Kurdish novels, which are treated not only as artistic constructions but also as socio-cultural and historical artefacts. The primary objective of this investigation is to understand the principle social, political, and historical reasons and root causes behind the close relationship between politics and literatures in Turkey and the principle socio-political and literary ramifications of such strong relationship. Towards this end, the thesis focuses on four main themes: language, love, religion, and history. Besides being the most common novelistic themes in the Turkish and Kurdish literary institutions, these are inherently heavily politicised and ethno-nationalistically charged themes - thus especially suitable for such inquiry. In line with this politico-historical and literary vein, the thesis also discusses some of the main political questions in Turkey, viz., the reasons behind the failure of Turkish democracy, its maladies and the resultant deadlock on some of the most important issues of the modern history of the country such as the Kurdish imbroglio and the conflict of secularisation and Islam. As the discussions on politics of love, language, religion, and history show, profound ideological competitions and antagonisms do not necessarily mean divergent political and literary structures. As such, the strong links between the Turkish and Kurdish literary institutions, as well as the ordeal of the Kurdish question and democratisation in Turkey, is as much caused by rival nationalisms, hostile ideological positions, and the like as by congruity, parallel political visions, and similar power structures. The main argument of the thesis, thus, is that the Kurdish and Turkish literary, political, and intellectual actors could not contribute towards the solution of the persistent political and literary questions in Turkey because of their failure in adopting a transformative politics and developing fully autonomous literatures. The future of the two literatures, as was in the past, this thesis argues, will remain intrinsically bound to the political structures and developments and the future of democracy in Turkey.

Abstract:
This thesis explores why readers insist on interpreting Zehra Çirak's texts in light of her Turkish German background when she claims that her texts have little to do with her Turkish heritage and are more universally applicable. While readers can interpret her texts without considering the author's biography, thereby obtaining insights into their own personal identity, I suggest that it also makes sense for readers to interpret her texts with the author's biography in mind because of current events and the history of Turkish migrant labor in Germany. To explore different possible interpretations of her texts, I have categorized Çirak's poetry, found in four of her volumes of poetry, Vogel auf dem Rücken eines Elefanten (1991), Fremde Flügel auf eigener Schulter (1994), Leibesübungen (2000), and In Bewegung (2008), into two broad groups. First, I look at the few poems in which Çirak overtly addresses alterity by discussing the alienation of Turks. In these texts, the speakers use Turkish words or images that link the texts to Çirak's biography. Then I turn to look at poems that can only metaphorically be interpreted as addressing Turkish German integration into mainstream German society and discuss how even though the figurative language Çirak employs make her texts applicable to other situations or interpretations, the texts lend themselves to being read in light of multiculturalism. In both of these categories of poetry, Çirak uses metaphor to address alterity without pandering to stereotypes or setting categorical limits on Turks, Germans, or other members of her readership.

Abstract:
Because I am a specialist on Cypriot literature, in particular Turkish- Cypriot literature, this has direct implications for the study of Turkish and Greek language literatures, as well as European minor literatures (as defined by Deleuze and Guattari: 1994). Due to the positionality of the Turkish and Greek literary traditions vis-a-vis European literary establishments, and that of Cypriot literature within the Turkish and Greek literary canons, I have studied literary polysystems theory (especially Even-Zohar: 1978 and 1979) and the relations between central and peripheral literatures. One of the central contributions of my work and research is to study the Turkish and Greek languages and literary traditions in the context and framework of 'contact languages' (Weinreich: 1953), in other words, as linguistic-cultural forms which have developed under co-habitation and mutual influence. I also studied 'othering, processes in Greek, Turkish, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot literary traditions within the broader context of orientalism and Eurocentricism in the system of European literatures. My work has brought to the fore the plurality of traditions within the domain of Turkish literature as well as the ancient and ongoing multilingual literary traditions of Cyprus. On the one hand, it enabled the study of different traditions within the same linguistic domain (Turkish) to be studied through different categories, such as Turkish literature and Turkish-Cypriot literature. On the other hand, it also allowed for the study of different language literatures under the same roof, such as the Greek, Turkish, and English language literatures of Cyprus as Cypriot literature.

Dabei haben die Eingliederungsprozesse von Türken und ihren Nachkommen bis heute besonderes Gewicht. Ziel der Dissertation ist es, anhand deutsch-türkischer Gegenwartsliteratur festgefahrene Denkmuster im Integrationsdiskurs zu hinterfragen und neue Perspektiven hierzu aufzuzeigen: Was ist Integration, wer integriert sich in was und warum? Die Arbeit untersucht, welche Integrationsmodi und -typen in der ausgewählten Literatur artikuliert werden, mit welchen Parametern Integration verknüpft ist und welche Faktoren als entscheidend für eine gelungene oder gescheiterte Integration gelten. Gegenstand sind Texte türkeistämmiger Autoren der ersten und zweiten Generation, die zwischen 2007 und 2011 erschienen sind insbesondere die Romane Ali zum Dessert von Hatice Akyün und Cafe Cyprus von Yade Kara. Den theoretischen und methodischen Rahmen bilden die interkulturelle Literaturwissenschaft nach Norbert Mecklenburg und Michael Hofmann (u. a. zu Identitäts- und Differenzkonzepten), die sozialwissenschaftlichen Ausführungen zum Integrationsbegriff von Hartmut Esser sowie das Diskursverständnis und archäologische Analyseverfahren nach Michel Foucault. Zu den Ergebnissen gehören die Ästhetische und thematische Charakterisierung der deutsch-türkischen Gegenwartsliteratur, die Bestimmung des dem jeweiligen Text zugrunde liegenden Integrationsverständnisses sowie die Bewertung der künstlerischen Ausarbeitung und des Diskursbeitrags. Besonders erhellend ist die Analyse, wenn die Texte einen abweichenden Diskurs von jenem in den Medien, der Politik und Gesellschaft dominanten entwerfen und Aspekte verhandeln, die bislang nicht in soziologischen Konzepten berücksichtigt werden. Dann zeigen sich im Diskurs neue Formationen und für die Integration entscheidende Faktoren sowie damit eine divergierende Einschätzung der Integrationsrealität.
Since the onset of guest worker migration in the mid-1950s, the notion of integration has been coming up in Germany as the diffuse demand for adaptation on the part of the migrants. Up to the present day, the processes of integration of Turks and their offspring have carried particular weight. The goal of this dissertation is to explore German-Turkish contemporary fiction in order to call intransigent patterns of thought in the discourse on integration into question and develop new perspectives: What is integration, who integrates into what, and why? The dissertation analyzes the modes of integration literature articulates, the parameters with which integration is bound up, and the factors considered decisive for successful or failed integration. Its subject are writings by first- and second-generation authors of Turkish origin that have appeared between 2007 and 2011, in particular the novels Ali zum Dessert by Hatice Akyün and Cafe Cyprus by Yade Kara. The theoretical and methodical framework is derived from intercultural literary studies as according to Norbert Mecklenburg and Michael Hoffmann (e.g. on concepts of identity and difference); Hartmut EsserÕs sociological account of integration; and Michel Foucault`s notion of discourse and archaeological analysis. The dissertation accomplishes the aesthetic and thematic characterization of German-Turkish contemporary fiction, reveals on which concept of integration each text is based, and evaluates the texts aesthetic realizations and their contributions to the current discourse. The analysis proves particularly insightful in those instances in which literary texts project a discourse that deviates from that of the media, politics, and society, and treat aspects that sociology has hitherto neglected. In these instances, new discursive formations along with new decisive factors for integration arise, and it becomes necessary to evaluate the reality of integration differently.

This dissertation is the first book-length study to analyse the production and patronage of Islamic illuminated manuscripts in late medieval RÅ«m in their fullest cultural contexts and in relation to the arts of the book of neighbouring regions. Although research concerning the artistic landscapes of late medieval Rūm has made significant progress in recent years, the development of the arts of the book and the nature of their patronage and production has yet to be fully addressed. The topic also remains relatively neglected in the wider field of Islamic art history. This thesis considers the arts of the book and the part they played in artistic life within contemporary scholarly frameworks that emphasise inclusivity, diversity and fluidity. Such frameworks acknowledge the period's ethnic and religious pluralism, the extent of cross-cultural exchange, the region's complex political situation after the breakdown in Seljuk rule, and the itinerancy of scholars, Sufis and craftsmen. Analyses are based on the codicological examination of sixteen illuminated Persian and Arabic manuscripts, none of which have been published in depth. In order to appropriately assess the material and to partially redress scholarly emphases on the constituent arts of the book (calligraphy, illumination, illustration and binding), the manuscripts are considered as whole objects. The manuscripts' ample inscriptions also help to form a clearer picture of contemporary artistic life. Evidence from further illuminated and non-illuminated manuscripts and other textual and material primary sources is also examined. Based on this evidence, this dissertation demonstrates that Rūm's towns had active cultural scenes despite the frequent outbreak of hostilities and the absence of an effective centralised government. The lavishness of some manuscripts from this period also challenges the often-assumed connection between dynastic patronage and sophisticated artistic production. Furthermore, the identities and affiliations of those involved in the production and patronage of illuminated manuscripts reinforces the impression of an ethnically and religiously diverse environment and highlights the role that local amīrs and Sufi dervishes in particular had in the creation of such material.

À travers ces cas, quoique lyriques, le genreromanesque met en évidence sa capacité à imposer des modèles de comportement, à transformer la personnalitédu lecteur, à susciter en lui une reconstruction identitaire. Dans ce travail, nous nous proposons d’étudier ce pouvoiret de le prouver à travers le cas du roman turc de la première décennie républicaine. C’est à ce moment-là, entre1923 et 1933, sous le régime de Mustafa Kemal, que convergent en Turquie les courants qui se disputent depuisquelques décennies la nouvelle identité des Turcs, après l’effondrement du modèle de société ottoman, basé sur lesentiment religieux. What do Don Quixote and Madame Bovary have in common? Indeed, they both believe themselves to be charactersfrom the novels they voraciously read. These examples, although heightened, highlight the novel’s ability to imposemodels of behaviour, to transform the reader’s personality, and in summary, to trigger a reconstruction of identity.In this thesis, I have set out to study this ability and to prove it through case studies of novels written in the firstdecade of the Republic of Turkey. The Ottoman model of society, based on religious affiliation, has collapsed andseveral currents of thought have been disputing for years a claim on the new identity of the Turks. They all convergein this period, between 1923 and 1933, under the rule of Mustafa Kemal, giving birth to a new form of identityreconstruction. Therefore, what role does the novel of this period play, especially as it has been dealing for decadeswith the social transformation of the country? In order to answer this question, I study the plots, recurring themesand characters of nearly eighty novels; I seek to determine the model(s) of society they defend and the linkconnecting them to the reality of the country. In addition, I analyse the symbolism of the places associated with theidentity referents at stake: Fatih, the traditional world, Beyoğlu, the Westernised Istanbul, and Anatolia, the sourceof national inspiration. This dissertation examines how Syriac literature portrays and perceives the Turkic peoples of Central Eurasia prior to the Seljük invasion of the Middle East. It spans approximately 500 years of history, from the mid-6th to the mid-11th centuries, and addresses over 100 extracts from 32 Syriac sources in which Turkic peoples are mentioned. Although several of the passages examined have been analysed in scholarly articles, many have never been addressed and few translated into English thus far. This dissertation presents a comprehensive survey of all pertinent references, gathering them together in chronological order, in order to build a composite picture of the subject. The findings make a significant contribution to our understanding of the interactions that took place over five centuries between Syriac Christianity and Turkic culture, both in the Central Eurasian homeland of the Turks and the Middle East. This dissertation explores why and how Syriac writers prior to the Seljük invasion were motivated to write about Turkic peoples. It examines the sources they used and addresses how these sources influenced their perception of the Turks. It further charts how these perceptions changed over the course of five centuries, including differences between East and West Syriac sources, as well as the ethnonyms used. Finally, it evaluates the contribution of Syriac literature to our knowledge of Turkic peoples. The Introduction provides basic background information on Turkic peoples. This dissertation aims to explore what challenges second generation Turkish immigrants face in the UK education system, specifically in London, which has a high multicultural mix. When addressing Turkish immigrants one has to keep in mind Turkish immigrants consist of three different origins namely Turkish Cypriots, Turkish immigrants from mainland Turkey and Kurdish Turkish immigrants. In this study, these three types of second generation immigrants have been analysed and their problems have been addressed, namely: underachievement, language, low expectations, bullying, gang involvement, identity crisis and parental issues. Solutions have been proposed in order to tackle the challenges that Turkish immigrants face in the UK.
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo explorar o que desafia a segunda geração de imigrantes turcos a enfrentarem o sistema de ensino do Reino Unido, principalmente em Londres, mistura multicultural. Ao abordar os imigrantes turcos, tem de se ter em mente que há três origens diferentes, ou seja cipriotas turcos, turcos da Turquia continental e curdos. Neste estudo, estes três tipos de imigrantes de segunda geração foram analisados e os seus problemas foram resolvidos, nomeadamente: insucesso, língua, baixas expectativas, o bullying, envolvimento com gangues, crise de identidade e questões parentais. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century a large and complex English literature on the Ottoman Turks developed, characterised by its diversity in form, content, opinion and context. This was a literature in the sense of a large body of texts sharing a topic, written in a similar time and place and in similar context, but also in the sense of a discourse, sharing literary conventions, citing similar sources, recycling information, accepted ‘facts’, anecdotes and images and drawing upon the same authorities. I examine this literature from its sixteenth-century roots, tracing its growth at the turn of the seventeenth century and its development into a complex literature, influenced by English religious and political contexts as well as growing Anglo-Ottoman trade and diplomacy, until the dramatic changes brought by diminishing Ottoman power in Europe at the close of that century. I draw these sources together as a ‘literature’, by examining trends, chronological developments and connections between them, while on the other hand I focus upon the contexts of individual works and a nuanced reading of their representations of the Ottomans. Through this I seek to bring a broader and more balanced perspective on both English literature on the Ottomans as a whole and the diversity and complexity of the works of which it was comprised.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, Molière's comedies were seen as a fertile source of material for Ottoman playwrights eager to bring new ideas to the popular dramatic arts and to create a new form of national theater. This dissertation concentrates on two primary ways that French theater was transmitted to the theater-going public in the nineteenth century : First, plays that traveled in their original language ; and secondly, translations and adaptations of the French plays most popular at the time. Précurseur de la littérature postmoderne en Turquie », étudie les récits courts de l’écrivain turc Haldun Taner (1915-1986) comme source d’inspiration des premiers postmodernistes turcs. H. Taner connu avant tout comme dramaturge, a créé une prose qui, délaissée en Turquie comme en Occident, présente un large champ inexploré éveillant notre intérêt scientifique. La problématique de notre recherche s’attache à déterminer le rôle des récits courts de H. Taner dans le paysage littéraire en Turquie, en soulignant leurs particularités. Notre méthodologie s’appuie sur les travaux des chercheurs occidentaux et turcs. Une place importante est laissée aux ouvrages théoriques des chercheurs russes, notamment de Mikhaïl Bakhtine. Sa théorie de la carnavalisation est largement appliquée à l’analyse des récits courts de H. Taner. Le corpus est constitué des récits cours de H. Taner de l’année 1945 à 1986. Notre étude confirme l’hypothèse de départ selon laquelle la prose carnavalesque de Haldun Taner a préparé le terrain au postmodernisme turc des années 1980-1990. This thesis, entitled "Haldun Taner's short stories. Forerunner of postmodern literature in Turkey ", studies the short stories of Turkish writer Haldun Taner (1915-1986) as a source of inspiration for early Turkish postmodernists. H. Taner, known above all as a playwright, created a prose, which, neglected in Turkey as in the West, presents a wide unexplored field arousing our scientific interest. The problematic of our research is to determine the role of H. Taner’s short stories in Turkey literary landscape, by emphasizing their specificities. Our methodology, based on the work of Western and Turkish researchers, leaves an important place to the theoretical works of Russian scientists, in particular Mikhail Bakhtin. His theory of carnavalisation is widely applied to the analysis of short stories by H. Taner. The corpus is made up of H. Taner's short stories from 1945 to 1986. Our study confirms the initial hypothesis that Haldun Taner's carnival prose paved the way for Turkish postmodernism in the 1980s and 1990s. The originality of the thesis consists in having determined the role of the prose of H. Taner in the development of Turkish literature, by having used Russian written sources not easily accessible to Western researchers, as well as in the application of Mikhail Bakhtin’s carnavalisation theory to Turkish literature

Notre travail de recherche traite des rapports de genre dans l’oeuvre de Sabahattin Ali, écrivain républicain (1907-1948) et pionnier du réalisme social. Ce travail se divise en deux parties. Nous consacrons la première partie à la vie de l’écrivain ainsi qu’à une analyse de la situation politique et sociale de la Turquie kémaliste ; puis nous observons de quelle façon les écrivains de la période républicaine ont perçu les rapports de genre. Dans la deuxième partie, nous expliquons comment Sabahattin Ali attire l’attention, par sa perception des rapports de genre, sur les inégalités et les injustices qui frappent les femmes et les hommes de l’époque kémaliste, puis nous montrons en quoi ses observations contribuent à faire de lui un défenseur unique et courageux de leurs droits, un penseur moderne toujours soucieux d’améliorer la vie de ses contemporains. Par le biais d’un examen précis des oeuvres de fiction et d’autres textes non fictionnels, nous voyons comment il a systématiquement dénoncé les carences et les défaillances du nouveau régime politique mais aussi pourquoi la littérature était pour lui le lieu d’une lutte pour la vérité et la liberté, valeurs auxquelles il s’est consacré jusqu’à sa mort. Our research deals with gender relations in the work of Sabahattin Ali, writer of the republican period (1907-1948) and pioneer of the style of social realism. This research is divided into two parts. In the first part, we talk about the life of the writer as well as the political and social situations of Kemalist Turkey. We also treat the subject of the perception of the gender relations by writers of the republican period. In the second part, we explain how Sabahattin Ali draws attention, through his perception of gender relations, to the inequalities and injustices that affect women and men of the Kemalist period, then we show how his observations contribute to make him a unique and courageous defender of their rights and a modern thinker always concerned with improving the lives of his contemporaries. Through a precise examination of works of fiction and other non-fictional texts, we see how he systematically denounced the shortcomings and failings of the new political regime but also why literature was for him the place of a struggle for truth and freedom, values to which he devoted himself until his death. Our work tries to pay tribute to a writer and an intellectual who always wanted to persuade his readers that social roles were never fixed but were the result of a culture and a society that it was up to all to forge

For this reason my main task has been to gather and compose all that has already been written within this matter. I have chosen not to dig deep into such an unexploared subject, but rather offer different types of entries with which further research can be pursued and built upon.

The early literature in Turkey consisted mostly of imitations of the well established arabic- and persian traditions. Because of that the turkisk modernism came, in comparison to the rest of Europe, relatively late. The quest for their own and original style first came with the modernists. For this reason I’ve chosen to stress turkish modernism and since Orhan Veli is given credit for it, his poetry. The modernistic breakthrough is explained through the poetic diction of Orhan Veli and the remaning members of a literary group called Garip. The reading of Velis poetry will be historically contextualized. Not only will his poetry be read in the light of his native literature history but also in comparison to other poets of his time.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the evolution of the early English travel narrative as it relates to the development and application of mercantilist economic practices, theories of aesthetic representation, and discourses of gender and narrative authority. I attempt to redress an imbalance in critical work on pre-colonialism and colonialism, which has tended to focus either on the Renaissance, as exemplified by the works of critics such as Stephen Greenblatt and John Gillies, or on the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as in the work of scholars such as Srinivas Aravamudan and Edward Said. This critical gap has left early travel narratives by Sir Francis Moore, Jonathan Harris, Penelope Aubin, and others largely neglected. These early writers, I argue, adapted the conventions of the travel narrative while relying on the authority of contemporary commercial practices. The early English travelers modified contemporary conventions of aesthetic representation by formulating their descriptions of non-European cultures in terms of the economic and political conventions and rivalries of the early eighteenth century. Early English travel literature, I demonstrate, functioned as a politically motivated medium that served both as a marker of authenticity, justifying the colonial and imperial ventures that would flourish in the nineteenth century, and as a forum for experimentation with English notions of gender and narrative authority.

Es el primer estudio que contiene el análisis de una leyenda española con un relato turco desde un punto de vista comparativo utilizando una bibliografía amplia de los importantes estudiosos de España, Turquía y de todo el mundo. El estudio consta de dos partes. La primera parte contiene el análisis de los dos relatos en la tradición oral. En el primer capítulo se analiza la distinción entre los géneros folclóricos que pertenecen las dos historias: la leyenda y halk hikayesi. En el segundo capítulo se centran en los orígenes de «Los Amantes de Teruel» y su evolución en la cultura oral del país, analizando la estructura y los motivos folclóricos que contiene el primer testimonio oral del relato en España, el papel escrito de letra antigua de Yagüe de Salas. En el tercer capítulo se dedica a los orígenes del relato turco y al análisis comparativo de sus cinco versiones en la tradición oral turca teniendo en cuenta la estructura que se proporciona por el investigador turco del folclore, Pertev Naili Boratav y los motivos folclóricos de Antti Aarne. En el último capítulo de la primera parte se hace un análisis comparativo de la estructura y los motivos folclóricos de los primeros testimonios de las historias española y turca. La segunda parte consta de sus versiones más exitosos en la literatura de dos países: Los amantes de Teruel de Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch y Ferhat ile Şirin de Nazım Hikmet. En el primer capítulo se dedica a la vida y la época de Hartzenbusch y la comparación de las dos versiones de la obra; una escrita en 1839, el primer manuscrito y la otra de 1849. Así se ve tanto la evolución de la leyenda en la literatura y también la evolución del drama y el dramaturgo en el siglo XIX. En el segundo capítulo consta de la vida y época de Nazım Hikmet que cultiva su obra dentro del movimiento realismo social y se considera como uno de los autores de la literatura turca más conocidos mundialmente. Para hacer el análisis, escogimos la primera publicación de Ferhat ile Şirin y lo comparamos con su versión en castellano Leyenda de amor, que se traduce bajo el dominio del mismo autor. Así se ven los cambios a la hora de traducir la obra a otro idioma. Tambien se ven la evolución de la leyenda dentro de la literatura.
This present thesis contains a comparative study of two legends of different cultures: "The Lovers of Teruel" in Spain and "Ferhat and Şirin" in Turkey. It is the first study that elaborates the analysis of a Spanish legend with a Turkish story from a comparative point of view using a large bibliography of leading scholars from Spain, Turkey and the entire world. The study consists of two parts. The first part contains the analysis of the two stories in the oral tradition. In the first chapter analyses the diferences between the folk genders that belong two stories: the legend and halk hikayesi. The second chapter focuses on the origins of "The Lovers of Teruel" and its evolution in the oral culture of the country, analyzing the structure and folk motifs taht contains the first oral testimony of the story in Spain taht is written by notarial Yagüe de Salas. The third chapter is dedicated to the origins of the Turkish story and the comparative analysis of the structure of Pertev Naili Boratav and folk motifs of Antti Aarne of the five versions in Turkish oral tradition. The last chapter contains the comparative analysis of the structure and the folk motifs of the first testimonies of the Spanish and Turkish stories. The second part consists of its most successful versions in the literature of two countries: The Lovers of Teruel of Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch and Ferhat ile Şirin of Nazım Hikmet. The first chapter is dedicated to the life and the century of Hartzenbusch and the comparison of the two versions of the book; one is written in 1839, the first manuscript and the other in 1849. Wıth thıs study we see the evolution of the legend in literature and also the evolution of the drama in the 19th century. The second chapter consists of the life and era of Nazım Hikmet who cultivated his work within the social realism movement and is regarded as one of the authors of Turkish literature more known ın world. We chose the first publication of Ferhat ile Şirin and compare it with the version in Spanish Legend of Love, translated under the control of the same author. So we compare the diferences between the original text and the translation one and also the evolution of the legend in literature.

Abstract:
The present work employs the detailed study of one case to illustrate a pattern that may well exist in other cases. It must be borne in mind that the subject population comprises approximately one fifth of the Soviet Union (and steadily growing at a rapid pace) and spread across a substantial portion of the Asian continent What is described in the following pages may have taken place with respect to other non-Russian nationalities in the USSR. Therefore, although this work focuses on Central Asian-Russian relations, it constitutes a possible model for analysis and investigation of Soviet policy toward other nationalities. There is strong evidence to indicate that those policies toward history and literature which were applied to Alpamysh have already been employed with respect to various developing countries as well, not the least of which are those bordering the USSR. It is the hope of this writer that this inquiry will induce others to pursue the questions raised here. Various disciplines and area studies might benefit from this investigation, aside from the obvious Central Asian and Soviet studies. The artificial separation of "areas" and disciplines, that have not existed during the evolution of the subject matter, cannot yield complete understanding. Given the restrictions imposed by the Soviet censorship and bureaucracies who control collections of materials and published works, documentation is not exhaustive. It is anticipated that subsequent research shall unearth additional information. Therefore, the temptation to hold back and wait for such new discoveries is immense. I almost succumbed to it, except for the constant reminders from friends and colleagues - among other reasons, pointing to the number of copies of the manuscript I had circulated in the academic community for comments and criticism who have insistently hounded me to go to print. I do so with mixed feelings, for, since the completion of this manuscript, a German translation (GDR printing) of Alpamysh has been issued It was translated not from the original, but from an earlier Russian translation. Moreover, it has been discovered that at least one, or perhaps two additional printings of Alpamysh have been offered for sale in Central Asia.

A great majority of the 3- and 4-year-olds produce narratives that do not count a story. 5- year-olds produce narratives that can be considered a story, however they fail to produce internal components of episodes. 7-year-olds are observed to produce episodes that contain necessary internal components. The emergence and function of temporal elements show differences relative to age and story unit.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to study how gender is constructed and represented in children's literature through image and text analysis of the four selected children's books from respectively Sweden, Poland, and Turkey. Through our analysis we want to demonstrate the prevailing gender discourses expressed in children's books through text and image. From this we want to create an understanding of the importance of the selection of children's books and the role of adults in com­municating and discussing the content. The study has feminist poststructuralism as theory which is part of social constructivism. To achieve the in-depth analysis, we used semiotic text and image analysis as well as multimodality and critical discourse analysis. The study's findings show that, based on semiotic image and text analysis, most analyzed books convey and portray a con­ventional and traditional image of femininity and masculinity. There are some break­through chal­lenges in the selected children's books that adults need to attend to in social practice with the chil­dren. The result we have reached is only partly in line with the curriculum for preschool gender equality. Some messages are also in conflict with them.

This research sets out to examine the representation of the construction of Turkish-German masculinities and masculine identities, as revealed in the literary and cinematic works of Turkish and Turkish-born writers and filmmakers respectively. To this aim the research will attempt to establish which factors mediate the construction and perpetuation of this hyphenated construct of masculine identity in its capacity to create an identity which, although dependent on the mediating influences of two opposing national identities, remains itself largely intangible and indefinable. The texts examined are Zafer Şenocak’s Die Prärie (1997), and Snow (2004) by Orhan Pamuk. The films are Lola und Bilidikid (1999) directed by Kutlug Ataman, and Gegen die Wand (2004) directed by Fatih Akin. Through an examination of the central characters in these works, it will be established to what extent they could be said to exist as representations or examples of this hyphenated cultural products. These characters will be examined in light of the theory that gender is a process of doing, and not being. Masculinity then, as a performance of gender will be considered in as far as it addresses the performance of a patricular kind of gender identity, namely that of migrant masculinity, in order to establish if there indeed exists an element of credibility to the hyphenated construct of the Turkish-German man, and by extension, to Turkish-German masculinity, as evidenced by the protagonists in the selected works.
