Abstract:
Despite the fact that it has been over seven decades since the passing of the famous Turkish writer Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil (1865-1945), his fame has continued till now due to the writer's unique and remarkable literary works in poetry as well as in novel, storytelling as he was familiar with European literature, particularly French, cultural and intellectual movements. Halid Ziya is considered one of the first writers who adopts European style in his writings and his novel The Forbidden Love 1900 (Aşk-ı Memnu in the original) often considered his masterpiece. It is the first and greatest novel in the history of Turkish literature through which the writer shows his good linguistic knowledge proficiently concerning the configuration and vocabularies of Turkish language and its accurate details. The Forbidden Love has been numerously studied and filmed as a TV-series. And originally written and first published in Turkish. In brief, words in Turkish are formed through a system of affixes attached to word stems. The writer frequently uses assertive adjectives in his novel in order to give a meaningful sense of the word. Abstract:
In parallel with the recognition of the importance of writer presence in academic texts, there has been an increasing interest in writer stance. Yet, very little of this research has been devoted to the construction of stance through retrospective labels. Driven by this need, this study aims to investigate the construction of stance through retrospective labels by American and novice Turkish writers in their texts. Using a corpus-based methodology comprising of quantitative and qualitative procedures, this study analyzes the frequency counts of stance through retrospective labels and the functions associated with them. The results of this corpus-based research have revealed similarities as well as some marked differences between the two corpora. It seems that in addition to proficiency in English, educational background of novice Turkish academic writers have an impact on their construction of stance through retrospective labels. I suggest that the strategic employment of retrospective labels to create stance is a valuable rhetorical strategy for academic writers to construct convincing arguments.

F. M. Dostoevsky is one of the most prominent figures in the history of world culture and literature, whose work has had a strong influence on writers from different countries. The article examines the reception of F. M. Dostoevsky’s creative heritage in Turkish literature of the 20th and 21s centuries. The main translations of his works into Turkish from the 1920s to the present are noted, Turkish translators and researchers who studied the work of the Russian writer are named. The article provides an overview of the works of leading Turkish writers (P. Safa, S. Ali, A. H. Tanpinar, S. Agaoglu, D. Ozlu, V. O. Bener, B. Karasu, O. Atay, R. Ozdenoren, O. Pamuk, L. Tekin, M. Mungan, etc.) that reflect the ideas and images of F. M. Dostoevsky. The influence of his novels on Turkish literature was reflected in the similarity of themes, problems, ideas, motifs, images, narrative style, ways of depicting reality in the works of Turkish writers, especially at the level of artistic insight into tragic life collisions, universal values, human mental life, features and motifs of his behavior, as well as in the development of the novel as a genre. Master’s and doctoral dissertations of Turkish researchers, scientific articles, monographs, publications in journals, interviews with Turkish writers were used as sources of research.

Abstract:
The lecture of the most famous Turkish writer of our time, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2006, was delivered at St.Petersburg State University on February 20, 2017 and was dedicated to the literary works of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, whose has always been appreciated by the Turkish prose writer. In his speeches and interviews Orhan Pamuk often says that he was influenced primarily by Russian writers: Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Vladimir Nabokov. The lecture is devoted to the analysis of two works by Dostoevsky — The Brothers Karamazov and Demons. It is based on the author’s personal impressions and perception of the novels in the context of Turkish culture, social and political life, and everyday life. In this case, a look at the work of Dostoevsky “from the outside” is especially interesting since Pamuk represents a country that is largely oriented towards Western culture, but at the same time preserves Eastern traditions, including religious ones. Pamuk reflects on Dostoevsky’s novels and notes they are politically significant novels, even though in the Russian literary tradition they are interpreted differently. Parallels drawn between the events that unfold in The Brothers Karamazov and Demons and the events in the public life of Turkey allow Pamuk to draw a conclusion about the deep mental kinship of Russian and Turkish societies with their ambiguous attitude towards the West.

The representations of minorities by the mainstream writers have frequently been viewed negatively. The depiction has been of a major concern to the literary writings. However, the representations of Kurdish women in Turkish literary works has rarely been tackled in scholarly papers and researches. Generally, the life of a Kurdish woman is molded by patriarchal practices, traditions, and customs that govern all social zones, rather than the legal rights. The patriarchal ideologies embedded in women’s mind make them believe that they could do nothing but what is expected from them; to be submissive and obedient.This research paper focuses on the representation of the Kurdish women in selected modern Turkish novels by three particular Turkish novelists: Honor (Penguin, 2012) by Elif Shafak written in English language ; Face to Face by Ayşe Kulin (Everest, 2006) written in Turkish ; The Legend of Ararat ( Collins and Harvill Press, 197) by Yashar Kemal written in Turkish . The research aims at selecting a variety of authors based on gender, ethnicity, Language and region. Yashar Kemal, is a Turkish writer of a Kurdish origin from Gökçedam, a village in the southern province of Osmaniya; Elif Shafak, is a Turkish-British writer who lives abroad and Ayşe Kulin, a woman writer from Istanbul. By means of textual analysis, the study investigates the representation of Kurdish women in these texts. Through a comparative approach, the paper endeavors to examine the ways in which the selected authors depict the Kurdish women and their social predicaments in their fictional works. Moreover, it investigates the images and conditions these authors depict to the mainstream Turkish readers as well as to the public readers in the rest of the world. This is portrayed through the construction of specific female characters that enhances a stereotype Kurdish women, who are powerless, submissive, ignorant and victims of the patriarch Kurdish society in southwest Turkey. It also explore the diversity in the authors' representation; the sympathetic to the Kurds, challenging the stereotypes viewpoints of the Kurdish women or the negative image and the harsh representation that includes depicting misconceptions and defects in the construction of the Kurdish identity and social structure. The women in the novels are presented as victims of the gender-based system simply for having been born female; they are marginalized and discriminated against in a variety of ways.

The Mughal literary culture has been noted for its notable achievements in poetry and a wide range of prose writings in Persian. In terms of profusion and variety of themes this literary output was also perhaps incomparable. The court's patronage has rightly been suggested as an important reason for this. This patronage, however, was not consistent throughout; much of the detail of its detour thus requires a closer scrutiny. The phenomenal rise of the language defies explanation in the first instance. The Mughals were Chaghtā'i Turks and we know that, unlike them, the other Turkic rulers outside of Iran, such as the Ottomans in Turkey and the Uzbeks in Central Asia, were not so enthusiastic about Persian. Indeed, in India also, Persian did not appear to hold such dominance at the courts of the early Mughals. In his memoir, Bābur (d. 1530), the founder of the Mughal empire in India, recounted the story of his exploits in Turkish. The Prince was a noted poet and writer of Turkish of his time, second only to ‘Alī Sheēr Nawā’ī (d. 1526). Turkish was the first language of his son and successor, Humāyūn (d. 1556), as well.

This thesis provides an experimental approach to abstract anaphora resolution in Turkish written discourse. The core of this work consists of identifying various manifestations of abstract anaphoric expressions &ndash<br>bu vs. bu durum, bu olay, bu is, bu ger&ccedil<br>ek (bu as the bare abstract object anaphor vs. bu+label abstract anaphors)- in Turkish discourse, and investigating whether any difference is observed in their processing. To this end, two offline experiments are conducted with human subjects, and the results indicate that label anaphors, compared to the bare anaphor bu, have a tendency to disambiguate the antecendent in some cases.

A text is a linguistic structure that is more than a random collection of sentences. A text is cohesive (Halliday &amp<br>Hasan, 1976) and coherent (Mann &amp<br>Thompson, 1987, 1988). Mainly ignored in the field of linguistics until recently, the text and the discourse structure have been inquired from various points of view (Asher, 1993<br>Asher &amp<br>Lascarides, 1998<br>Grosz &amp<br>Sidner, 1986<br>Mann &amp<br>Thompson, 1987, 1988<br>Webber, 2004). D-LTAG is a discourse grammar work that extends a lexicalized sentence level grammar LTAG (Joshi, 1987) to low-level discourse (Webber, 2004<br>Webber &amp<br>Joshi, 1998). In this framework, discourse connectives such as coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, parallel connectives and discourse adverbials are predicates of discourse structure that take text spans that can be interpreted as abstract objects (Asher, 1993). Turkish has a flexible word order in comparison to languages like English. In English, the discourse adverbials are noted for their ability to occupy positions unavailable to other discourse connectives. In Turkish, word order of other discourse connectives, coordinators and subordinators are not expected to be as restricted. This thesis examines the connective position, argument order and the information structure of five Turkish discourse connectives in their eleven uses. The analyses show that the examined features of discourse connectives are related to the syntactic group the connective belongs to. Discourse connectives of the same syntactic groups exploit similar connective position and argument order possibilities, and they tend to be included in similar information units.

Abstract:
This study investigated the use of lexical bundles in research articles written in English by Turkish scholars. For the purpose of the study, a corpus of published research articles produced by Turkish scholars in six different academic disciplines was collected. The four-word lexical bundles that appeared at least twenty times in this one million word corpus were identified and further analyzed both structurally and functionally based on the previous taxonomies developed by Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad and Finegan (1999) and Biber, Conrad and Cortes (2004). The results of this study revealed that the lexical bundles found have structural correlates as well as strong functional features that help to construct discourse in academic writing. The conclusions drawn from this study could be applied to the teaching of academic genres to researchers in English as a Foreign Language context and are expected to provide insights for further corpus-based studies in academic writing.

The aim of this thesis is to compare and contrast the ways in which native speakers of Turkish (NST) and native speakers of American English (NSAE) write the acknowledgment sections of their MA and PhD dissertations. The analysis in the study focuses on the pragmatic and discourse strategies used by the authors in the texts written in English. First, the study uncovers the organization of the dissertation acknowledgments and the thanking strategies employed in the acknowledgment sections written in English by native speakers of Turkish and American English in their MA and PhD dissertations. Then, the authors&rsquo<br>choices of expressions of gratitude for specific addressees (e.g., supervisors vs. friends) are discussed. Data examined in the study comprise 144 dissertations written by 72 NST and 72 NSAE and are collected from sources such as the National Theses Centre of The Council of Higher Education of Turkey, ProQuest dissertation services. The thesis aims to contribute to the areas of foreign language education, pragmatics and cross-cultural communication.

The text is a reflection of a well-researched professional publication by Tomáš Rataj České země ve stínu půlměsíce (Czech Lands in the Shadow of the Crescent, 2002). After a multilateral acknowledgement of the book, the author fills in relevant items written by some of the staff of the Faculty of Arts MU, some of which were published only after the publication of Rataj’s work. Additionally, she refines, with reference to the study of Jan Kumpera (1994), the existence of a translation of the Bible into Turkish initiated by Comenius, namely its printing in the 19th century. At the end, the author mentions her personal teaching activities on the topic in the context of the honoured person of Jan Zouhar’s personality as a pedagogical ideal.

This chapter is intended to be an analysis over Elif Shafak's novels which have as main theme the fight for women's rights and freedom. The writer expresses her indignation against the honor code and she pleads for women's emancipation in modern Turkey. Within her novels, Honour and The Bastard of Istanbul Elif Shafak manages to portray Turkish women both traditional and modern, pointing out the gap between these two faces of the Turkish society. An active writer, an anti-violence advocate, but also a journalist who during her interviews and articles published mainly in Western media draws the picture of HBV victims, Shafak reminds the main solution for the eradication of the honor killings and sexual discrimination: ‘Higher Education' for the Turkish girls who stay in their country and integration for those who immigrate in different corners of the world where Women's Rights are respected and the perpetrators punished for their crimes.

Blogs are an integral component of blended learning environments in English as a second language (ESL)/English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts. Although they are used in higher education to promote language learning, their impact on EFL preservice teachers' writer identity development in academic writing is underexplored. Utilizing Hyland's metadiscourse model, this qualitative case study in the Turkish higher education context investigated EFL preservice teachers' writer identity development on blogs. The data were collected via reflective journals, semi-structured interviews and reflective essays. Triangulation and corpus-based analysis of Hyland's metadiscourse markers were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed the EFL preservice teachers' multifaceted and even contradictory academic writer identities on blogs and numerous challenges they encountered regarding their identity displays. This study highlighted a blended and corpus-based futuristic perspective on the exploration of EFL writer identities.

Voyaging throughout the villages and towns of historic Armenia, dissident Turkish writer Kemal Yalçin discovers hidden, secret or crypto-Armenian families whose disguise of national identity, suppression of memories of historic catastrophes and fear of discrimination are experienced as personal tragedies. Yalçin describes his journey of discovery of silenced memories and invisible identities in his book You Rejoice My Heart (2007) – a documentary, fact-based collection combining features of a novel and political history blended together. The significant point that the present paper emphasises is the fact that the recording of the pain and the hopes of hidden Armenians is Kemal Yalçin’s autobiographical confession and his protest against Turkish nationalist and chauvinist policy, against the intolerance and aggression of Turkish authorities and his recognition of the Genocide of Armenians in 1915.

This article is about the story of a favorite Jewish song of many people around the world. Hava Nagila is one of the first modern Israeli folk songs in the Hebrew language. It went on to become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and bar/bat (b'nei) mitzvah celebrations. The melody is based on a Hassidic Nigun. According to sources, the melody is taken from a Ukrainian folk song from Bukovina. The text was probably the work of musicologist Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, written in 1918. The text was composed in 1918, to celebrate the Balfour Declaration and the British victory over the Turks in 1917. During World War I, Idelsohn served in the Turkish Army as a bandmaster in Gaza, returning to his research in Jerusalem at the end of the war in 1919. In 1922, he published the Hebrew song book, “Sefer Hashirim”, which includes the first publication of his arrangement of the song Hava Nagila.

Verbs in Turkish morphology; It has an important place in terms of preventing unnecessary repetitions by providing a short way to convey what is told, facilitating the transfer of thoughts to be told, making the language fluent and strong by connecting sentences easily and fluently. Noun-verbs in the group of verbs in Turkish, with the addition of -mAk (-mak, -mek), -mA (-ma, -me), -İş (-iş, -iş, -uş, -ş) to the verb stem or body. they are created. Noun-verbs tell the verb's payment and the nouns of the verbs regardless of person and tense. In this page, the noun-verbs and noun-verb affixes in the Legend of Yaşar Kemal's Ağrıdağı, the words that have written names, were determined by scanning method. The words in which the detected nouns-verbs are included are classified according to their structures. The study has been put into writing by adding the place-defined and text numbers of the noun-verbs determined because it is in the text. With the data obtained, the usage numbers of nouns and verbs were given and targeted certain inferences

Abstract:
The most detailed description of the “Balkan” period is found in the novel by D. Tanasoglo “Uzun Kervan”. In other genres (poetry), the poeticized image of the Balkans as the historical homeland of the Gagauz is presented to a greater extent. The main events of the “Balkan” period in the history of the Gagauzians, reflected in fiction, are: the adoption of Christianity by the Oghuz / Uzes – the ancestors of the Gagauzians, relations with the local population of the Balkans, the struggle against the Ottoman Turks, and the creation of a fictional Gagauz state called Uzi Eyalet. The authors also draw attention to the way in which changes occur in the traditional everyday culture of ancestors of the Gagauz as a result of changing economic-cultural type, and religion. In the Gagauz environment of creative people, there is a unity in the perception of the historical past associated with the presence of the ancestors of the Gagauz people in the Balkans. As a rule (with a few exceptions), the past broadcast by Gagauz writers is largely mythologized: and the writers themselves play a significant role in the process of constructing ethnicity.

Marco Polo and his knowledge of Asian languages Marco Polo (1254–1324) claimed (or rather his editors) that he could speak (and read) in other languages in ad dition to his own, at least five. Although he spoke little Chinese or rather not, he spoke a number of languages used in East Asia at the time – most likely Turkic (in the Kuman dialect: (lingua) tartara; tartaresce; tartaresche), which was also spoken among Mongols, Arabized Per sians, Uighurs and perhaps even he knew Mongolian. While communicating with the Great Khan, Marco Polo was almost certainly able to speak and write Mongolian. Marco Polo usually referred to Chinese local names in Persian, so it is very likely that he spoke Persian and was able to read the Arabic script. In addition, Persian was the lingua franca used throughout the region at the time even at Kublai Khan’s court. The paper brings some particular examples from Marco’s Mss.
