Abstract:
Turkisms in South Slavonic Literature is a comparative analysis of Turkish loanwords in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Bosnian and Bulgarian Franciscan sources. After providing historical background on the Order of the Bosnian Franciscans (Bosna Srebrena), Bulgarian Catholic communities, Turkish presence in Bosnia and in Bulgaria, as well as short biographies of each of the writers whose works are analysed, orthography, phonology, and how the local languages were defined in the period under study are discussed. Considerable focus is then given to complications related to establishing earliest attestations for turkisms in Bosnian and Bulgarian. Subsequently, four chapters are devoted to analysing turkisms as grouped by grammatical function: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, and conjunctions. Particular attention is given to morphophonological changes, verbal aspect, Turkish voice suffixes, and number agreement. Lastly, the context in which turkisms occur, the motivation behind these borrowings, and semantics are addressed.

Abstract:
This chapter examines early film culture in Istanbul by focusing on how Turkish male writers constructed cinema-going Turkish women in early twentieth-century and postwar Istanbul. The goal is to analyze gendered concerns about spectatorship emerging in the patriarchal imagination of that time. In order to understand the reception of early cinema in Turkey as well as the cultural status of Turkish cinema among the Ottoman/Turkish intelligentsia and the gender politics surrounding it, the chapter looks at novels, poems, and newspaper reviews. The discussion begins with an overview of film market in post-World-War I Istanbul and cinema-going as a public experience in the Ottoman capital. An analysis of female spectators depicted by male authors reveals a changing culture of spectatorship. This occurred concomitantly with the sociopolitical transition from the declining Ottoman Empire to the rise of the Turkish nation-state. The chapter argues that the change in gender politics during this period triggered the new anxieties that creative writers project onto the activity of filmgoing, and particularly that by cinema-going women.

This chapter focuses on the development of the Arab German novel. Arab writers came to Germany primarily as students and political exiles and became well known in the country in the 1980s. In the beginning, most of them engaged with the thematics of immigration and cultural diversity and encountered prejudice in the reception of their works, as had Turkish writers. The work of the pioneers of Arab German literature was also categorized under the exclusionist term Gastarbeiterliteratur (guest worker literature) and Ausländerliteratur (literature of foreigners). After providing an overview of the beginnings and major themes of the Arab German novel, this chapter considers the works of pioneer writers from Syria, Lebanon, and the Negev, as well as those of Iraqi German writers.

For nearly 60 years--from its uprising against British rule in the 1950s, to the bloody civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the 1960s, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the 1970s, and the United Nation's ongoing 30-year effort to reunite the island--the tiny Mediterranean nation of Cyprus has taken a disproportionate share of the international spotlight. And while it has been often in the news, accurate and impartial information on the conflict has been nearly impossible to obtain. In The Cyprus Problem, James Ker-Lindsay offers an incisive, even-handed account of the conflict. Ker-Lindsay covers all aspects of the Cyprus problem, placing it in historical context, addressing the situation as it now stands, and looking toward its possible resolution. The book begins with the origins of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities as well as the other indigenous communities on the island (Maronites, Latin, Armenians, and Gypsies). Ker-Lindsay then examines the tensions that emerged between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots after independence in 1960 and the complex constitutional provisions and international treaties designed to safeguard the new state. He pays special attention to the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the subsequent efforts by the UN and the international community to reunite Cyprus. The book's final two chapters address a host of pressing issues that divide the two Cypriot communities, including key concerns over property, refugee returns, and the repatriation of settlers. Ker-Lindsay concludes by considering whether partition really is the best solution, as many observers increasingly suggest. On the Threshold of Eurasia: Revolutionary Poetics in the Caucasus explores the idea of the Russian and Soviet “East” as a political, aesthetic and scientific system of ideas that contributed to the construction of Soviet discourses of ethnicity, empire, and literary modernity during the tumultuous first two decades of the twentieth century, from 1905 to 1929. It exposes connections between literary works, political essays, and orientalist history, geography, and ethnology written by Russian and Azeri Turkic Muslim writers and thinkers, many of whom have been unknown to Anglophone readers until now. Tracing translations and intertextual engagements across Russia, the Caucasus and western Europe, this book offers an alternative vision of empire, modernity and anti-imperialism from the vantage point of cosmopolitan centers in the Russian empire and Soviet Union. In this way, On the Threshold of Eurasia illustrates the pivotal impact of the literature of the Caucasus and the former Soviet periphery more broadly on the monumental aesthetic and political shifts of the early twentieth century.

The volume consists of six parts devoted to literature, languages, history, culture, science, religions and philosophy of the Eastern World. Its aim is to portray the present-day state of oriental studies, which are here understood predominantly as philologies of Asia and Africa, but also as a field of study including other, adjacent disciplines of the humanities, not neglecting the history of oriental research. The book’s multidisciplinary content reflects the multi- and often interdisciplinary nature of oriental studies today. Part 1 (Literature) offers new insights into belles-lettres written in Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Urdu, Persian and Japanese. Part 2 (Linguistics) contains studies on Sanskrit texts (in a stylometric approach), Japanese nominals, Japanese poetry as a linguistic source, Arabic translations of the Bible, Arabic dialect of Morocco, Arabic culinary terms of Persian origin and Turkish vocabulary of the language reform era. The articles written by friends, colleagues, former students, and one current doctoral student collected in this celebratory volume dedicated to the doyen of Ottoman studies in Croatia, Professor Nenad Moačanin, are divided into three main chapters entitled “Ottoman Bosnia, Turkish Croatia, and Turkey in Europe,” “Distant Borders and Regions,” and “Glimpses Beyond the Ottoman Border: Habsburg Croatia and the Republic of Dubrovnik.” The first section consists of the articles predominantly dedicated to the main fields of interests of Nenad Moačanin, namely social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire, with special focus on Ottoman Bosnia, the Balkans and Central Europe, as well as the Ottoman borderland in Croatia. The second section entitled “Distant Borders and Regions” brings three articles which are geographically remote from the Western Balkans and Central Europe, such as Crimea, Syria, and Palestine, but nevertheless fit well into the conception of the volume by offering a possibility for comparison of distant regions. The third section “Glimpses Beyond the Ottoman Border: Habsburg Croatia and the Republic of Dubrovnik” contains five articles which provide an important insight into the situation on “the other side.” The volume also includes a biographical overview of Professor Moačanin’s scientific and educational career at the beginning, and the bibliography at the end of the volume.

Abstract:
The Persian historian Idris Bitlisi (d. 1520), composed a massive chronicle of the House of Osman for the Ottoman emperor Bayezid II (d. 1512). Idris was writing his text at the time of the rise of the Safavids in the east and the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. By relying on a chronicle written after the conquest of Constantinople attributed to Ruhi, Idris downplayed the Turkestani origins of the Ottomans and projected onto their “Eastern” origin undesirable traits associated with Turkic ancestry. Instead, Idris recast his masters as the true inheritors of Roman Empire and the true followers of Alexander the Great. To accomplish all this, Idris drew on biblical, Koranic, and other myths to create a myth for the state separate from a dynastic origin myth.

Citavi is a software that helps academicians in all processes, especially in the field of theology, in scientific research, and writing, from literature review to writing drafts of the research report (article, thesis, book) before the final revision. It differs from its peers with its features and tools that facilitate and accelerate research activities and processes and complete it with a solid weave. It fully supports many languages, including Arabic and Turkish, and offers error-free writing in these languages. It allows all kinds of date and page number entries to be written as written by the user. Citavi has brought together resource-reference management and information organization under the same roof. In this way, it has many features and useful tools such as creating bibliography and information slips, editing and changing the slips, dividing them into various categories, linking them to the chapters and headings shown in the table of contents of the research, and easily exporting them to a Word file. In this way, it transforms the time-consuming and tiring classical bibliography and information filing stage into an enjoyable and easily sustainable research process, thanks to its useful interface and advanced tools. In particular, the bibliography and information slips creation system will be welcomed by researchers with great pleasure and will be used with pleasure. Thanks to its features and tools, thesis, article, and book pre-edit drafts can be written directly in Citavi without the need for Word. Thus, the researcher can easily continue and complete his/her work directly through a single program without going back and forth between Citavi and Word applications. We wanted to ensure that researchers in our country benefit from this software, as it facilitates and accelerates the work of the researcher in almost all of the scientific research and writing processes in all fields, especially in the field of theology, and allows it to be built with a solid weave. For this purpose, a year ago, we presented the appropriate add-on for the ISNAD Citation System and the user guide to the use of researchers. Now, we are happy to present the same user manual to researchers as revised, supplemented, and visually improved.

The Festschrift is a collection of papers written in honour of Professor Elżbieta Mańczak-Wohlfeld to mark the occasion of her 70th birthday. Professor Elżbieta Mańczak-Wohlfeld is one of the leading authorities in the field of language contact, and has pursued research on the influence of English on Polish and other European languages, Polish-English contrastive studies, as well as various aspects of English grammar. She has authored more than 160 publications, including four books, as well as course books and academic papers. She has also edited and co-edited dictionaries of English borrowings in Polish. The Festschrift volume comprises papers from the world of linguistics which have been authored by eminent scholars from Poland and abroad. The chapters included in the volume focus on various issues, including those from the area of contact linguistics. The topics covered in the research papers comprise, for instance, the influence of English on different languages, such as Polish, Danish, Afrikaans, Swedish, Spanish, German and Japanese, as well as on Asian languages and cultures. The authors investigate Celtic borrowings in Polish, anglicisms in Serbian, or Yiddish borrowings in contemporary American English. The contributions also discuss the phenomenon of Ponglish, i.e., the communication code used by Poles living in the UK, the presence of foreign languages in the linguistic landscape of Kraków, as well as the problem of multilingualism in Europe, the relation between language, culture and identity, and the influence of globalisation on both Polish language and culture. Abstract:
The Short Words comprises the first ten chapters of the thirty-three-chapter work known as The Words, which in turn forms the first part of the Risale-i Nur (Epistles of Light) collection, a commentary on the Quran that totals in excess of six thousand pages. The Risale-i Nur was written in Turkish by one of the modern age’s most significant Muslim scholars, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1876-1960). Nursi wrote this monumental work in order to explain the truths and realities of belief, both to his fellow Muslims and to modern humankind in general. In Nursi’s view, we are in this modern age confronted by a profound crisis of meaning, and in the face of the assaults of materialist philosophies and ideologies, the question which must be prioritised over all others for Muslims is the saving and strengthening of belief. For it is only in belief in the Creator, the Source of all being, that humankind’s true happiness and progress, and the cure for the wounds caused by materialism and misguidance, are to be found. Nursi devoted a whole life of learning and scholarship to realising these aims. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi’s treatise The Short Words are presented here in its new English translation with a focus on the communication of meaning rather than on strict, word-for-word equivalence, which often obscures what the author is trying to say and makes reading more of a task for the reader than a pleasure. The Short Words are, as the title suggests, short, simple, reader-friendly pieces describing, through the use of comparisons, metaphors and analogies, the virtues of belief and worshipful action. The Short Words showcase Nursi’s own unique style of instruction through short, accessible parables on the relative merits and demerits of guidance and misguidance and belief and unbelief, pointing out how alien to human nature the rejection and denial of God really are, and showing how humankind’s true happiness and progress can be found only in recognition, acceptance and worship of the Maker of the universe, and in worshipful action on His account.
