Information systems (IS) outsourcing became a very common practice in developed and in emerging economies. Over 94% of Fortune 500 companies are outsourcing at least one major business function. Despite IS outsourcing's popularity, failure rates are high. Many remedies are proposed in the literature, but failure rate of IS outsourcing projects remains high. It seems these remedies turned out to be partially successful at best. This chapter presents an alternative, new perspective on how to avoid IS project outsourcing failures and explores the concept of modularity and normalized systems theory (NST) in relation to IS outsourcing projects. Such a new perspective, which originates from the system sciences, may add value to outsourcing risk analyses. A case study analysis of a failed IS outsourcing project has been conducted. This study illustrates how the concept of modularity and normalized systems theory can be applied ex ante in order to mitigate the risk factors in IS outsourcing projects.

Projects, programs, and portfolios can be safeguards for organizational continuity, enablers of evolutions, or catalysts for change. It is therefore essential to take the maturity into account of the organization they are serving. It is by embedding attention for it on the different levels that the drawbacks of maturity concerns can be turned into micro-catalysts for change, advancement, and success. This chapter analyzes different complementary components of organizational maturity, mainly maturity for program and portfolio management, the maturity of the relation between project and resource management, and maturity on strategy management. The levering potential of maturity risks is briefly be addressed. To give more depth to the silver lining, two cases are integrated. Together, they illustrate that attention for the organizational maturity concern is a concern that goes beyond the differences between traditional Waterfall projects and more agile paced contexts.

Abstract:
Big Data-wow! Look at the size of it! People are dazzled easily and impressed by the amount of data legions of developers can produce and moreover how they store it. But one should ask why so much data is being collected. Part of the answer is simple in light of scientific projects but why is there so much data on us? Such questions prompt this chapter on the philosophy of Big Data. After some background on definitions, origins and contemporary applications, the main discussion begins with thinking about Big Data from a complexity standpoint. Big Data is turned into knowledge but knowledge is extrapolated from the past and used to manage the future. Yet it is questionable whether humans have the capacity to manage contemporary technological and social complexity evidenced by our world in crisis and possibly on the brink of extinction. We are at the center of observation from which Big Data emerges, the overall human project being not only to create an artificial brain with an attendant mind but a society that might be able to survive what “natural” humans cannot.

This methodology was applied to the preselected set of bridges and culverts intended to have higher vulnerability to climate change (because of their years in service, their design, current scour depth, and so on). The academic study was conducted at a Polytechnic Health school. They used the management common tools to develop the idea and they experienced the role of an entrepreneur. Conversely, one of the aspects that contributed to the motivation for this work lies into the existing gap concerning project management applied to entrepreneurship. The current literature focuses on the definition of the business plan, a static component of entrepreneurship, which is fundamental for financing domains, but it neglects the dynamic component essential for the development of a business idea. The student majors' rewards were related with the teamwork environment: collaboration, communication, and creativity. The concept of privacy enhancing services delivery through the use of intermediary trusted third parties has already been described in literature but rarely turned into practice. A number of limited PET (Privacy Enhancing Technologies) applications exist in closed domains. The very few existing solutions are not based on an independent TTP (Trusted Third Party) concept which renders their trustworthiness questionable. This chapter examines the political implications of staging the promise of nonpolluted futures. In 2012, the general manager of Mining and Smelting Combine Bor (RTB) presented “the biggest ecological project in the Balkans.” This project promised the reconstruction of the old smelting factory and the construction of a new sulfuric acid factory, since the old ones polluted Bor significantly. It was promised that clean flash smelting technologies would be implemented in the old smelter. Following the smelter’s opening in 2014, the next two years were remembered as unusually unpolluting. However, as soon as the new Chinese management took over the company in 2018, the reconstructed smelter turned out to have less capacity than would suit the new owners. The sulfuric acid factory, which was supposed to collect sulfur dioxide from the smelter, could not even process the newly increased amount of it. As a result, at some point a vast amount of pollution was again simply expelled through the smelter’s chimney onto the town. It also turned out that the reconstructed smelter may even have been built improperly and hastily. In spite of some limited local protests back then, the state mechanisms to limit the increased pollution turned out to be powerless.

Abstract:
The backbone of every research project is the collection of data that a researcher has identified as worthy of analysis. Interviews, survey questionnaires, publically available information and audio-visual material are all potential sources of data to a researcher. However, collecting data can be a daunting experience, either because you have too little data or because what looked like a rich dataset has turned into a nightmarish sense of data-overload. It is therefore helpful to spend time thinking about where you will look for data. Evaluating data sources will save valuable time and resources but also tends to lead to better analysis and more robust results. What constitutes good practice when collecting data is very much dependent on the research tradition within which your project is placed. How do different research traditions define and use data? For those scholars whose work you are engaging with closely, where did they source data? The chapter will help you evaluate data quality, consider ways in which different sources of data be combined and will provide practical advice on data collection. Additionally, a great part of this chapter is dedicated to case studies as an example of a methodology that can be based on different types of data. By following the advice offered here, you will be able to collect data that are relevant to your research methodology and build high quality insights.

Cereal storage is a critical link in the food supply chain, impacting food security, quality, and sustainability. The present chapter provides a comprehensive examination of cereal storage systems in terms of engineering design, manufacturing planning, construction management, technology solutions, and business functions, by focusing on four key facility elements: I. factory and plant layout; II. warehouse and transportation; III. automation, robotics, and sensors; and IV. postharvesting equipment. Through a systematic lens, engineering design principles, construction management strategies, and technological solutions, etc., are explored. It also highlights the interdependence of facility elements and their impact on business functions, emphasizing the need for well-planned layouts and integrated technologies. The chapter delves into advanced manufacturing processes, automation, and real-time monitoring as essential components for optimal cereal storage. Additionally, it introduces the concept of turnkey projects and one-stop services as modern business functions in this domain. Offering practical insights, it can serve as a valuable resource for professionals and enthusiasts seeking a holistic understanding of cereal storage systems, bridging the gap between theory and practical application.

Public involvement or community relations activities have become essential to environmental remediation projects. The key to success for these programs is to identify community and stakeholder concerns and needs early on and address them through an effective outreach program that can result in a win-win outcome for those involved. A three-phase community outreach approach is used to identify and develop proactive community outreach strategies and programs. In the first phase, a community assessment is performed to obtain the input needed to develop an effective community outreach plan. The sec

Abstract A waterflood project is usually associated with a significant amount of capital and operating expenditure. Lifting, separation and treatment costs increase with production water cut and such increase accelerates dramatically when water cut passes the 80% mark. This paper evaluates the possibility to offset costs by converting the heat of produced fluids into electric power. Evaluation is focused on the use of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), a process featuring a low-boiling point working fluid and thus allowing electricity generation from a low temperature heat. It covers a number of sce

Background Early detection and identification of faulty greenhouse operation is essential, if losses are to be minimized by taking immediate corrective actions. Automatic detection and identification would also free the greenhouse manager to tend to his other business. Original objectives The general objective was to develop a method, or methods, for the detection, identification and accommodation of faults in the greenhouse. More specific objectives were as follows: 1. Develop accurate systems models, which will enable the detection of small deviations from normal behavior (of sensors, contro
