Full textHow to analyze the transnationalisation of pro-Kurdish mobilizations? The main hypothesis of this PhD thesis is that the different dimensions of the Kurdist mobilizations in Europe (emergence, action repertoires, temporalities, rhythms, individual engagements, self commitment, etc. ) have to be related not to the political structures of the countries where these mobilizations take place, but to the extended interdependence system of the Kurdish movement: they' vary according to different interaction systems (relationships with the authorities, with the media, with the other mobilized groups and internaI relationships) that are not limited to the objectively present actors in a given interaction site. The demonstration of this hypothesis goes through the mobilization of plural sources: interviews with activists of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), observations of demonstrations, analysis of the militant press, statistical analysis of protest events and auto-sacrificial actions

Full textThis dissertation explores the internal conflicts in Kurdish society from local context and long term perspectives. It departs from an interrogation on the war between the PKK and the Turkish state, during which some residents took sides with the guerillas, others chose to collaborate with the state by becoming korucu, yet a small portion of others got involved in the Islamist organisation Hizbullah. Through a comparative examination of the three localities Lice, Kulp and Silvan (in the north-east of Diyarbakir) from 1830s to 1990s, the present research aims at providing a detailed, situated, and locally anchored account of the phenomena of destructuration and restructuration that have affected the Kurds of Turkey. The approach adopted in the study is at the intersection of history and anthropology, combining the examination of the written sources and ethnographic survey, particularly through a series of interviews realised between 2013 and 2017 in the villages and main localities of the field of this study. The principal dimension of the research tries to clarify how the intra-Kurdish cleavages and conflicts were influenced and determined by a series of factors (local dynamics, tribal affiliation, internal recomposition in some families, the impact of socialisation and politicisation, etc.). Of great importance in the study are the interactions between the conflicting dynamics internal to Kurdish societies and the manner in which the politics of the central power step in to influence these configurations. The perspective adopted in the study relies largely on oral sources and tries to produce a shared or connected history, thus detaching itself from Kurdish-centred and/or “sunnite-centred” historiographies, by including diverse ethnic and religious communities living or having lived in the region. Special attention is devoted to “minor” histories and memories, in the form of secret resistance, as well as to the role of constructing and transmitting the memory in the persistence or reconfiguration of internal conflicts. The results of this research, sensitive to the phenomena related to temporality and subjectivity, help to clearly see the variety of factors in the involvement and loyalties that are influential in situations of violence with different Kurdish actors opposing each other

Full textWhy do peace negotiations fail? Answering this question, this dissertation synthesizes the literature on bargaining theory and third party involvement in intrastate conflicts. Using qualitative case study methods, I employ this theoretical framework to the third round of the peace talks between Turkey and Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which was held between December 2012 and July 2015. Bargaining model of war highlights the problems of information asymmetries and credible commitment that lead to bargaining failures. Information asymmetries and commitment problems are usually more severe in intrastate conflicts because it tends to be more difficult to obtain information about the military capabilities of non-state armed groups (NSAGs) and there tends to be larger power asymmetries between states and NSAGs. The case highlights four sets of implications. First, both sides in a peace process can willingly make choices that fail to achieve the ends to which they aspired. Second, these choices result from ill-designed measures in bargaining practices and/or the lack of a third party that would redress the relative balance of power and maintain it during the peace talks. This ultimately intensifies the problems of credible commitment. Third, disruptive exogenous shifts in relative capabilities, especially in favor of the NSAG, may produce asymmetric information problems. Fourth, some conflicts do not lend themselves to third-party involvement, as it may be too difficult or costly for third parties to redress the relative balance of power.
