Livingstone, Suzanne Rachel. "Sea turtle ecology and conservation on the North Coast of Trinidad, West Indies." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2006. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4323/.

Abstract:
Five species of sea turtle are known to nest on the north and east coast beaches of Trinidad, West Indies. In descending order of abundance: the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), the green (Chelonia mydas), the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the loggerhead (Caretta caretta). This thesis investigates a number of aspects of the ecology and conservation of the sea turtles nesting and foraging on the north coast. Prior to this project, little research had been carried out on the north coast region, largely due to the difficulties of accessing the

In the southeastern United States, skimmer trawls, pusher-head trawls, wing nets, and small try nets (headrope length less than 12-ft (3.66-m)) are exempt from using a turtle excluder device (TED) and instead must adhere to tow time restrictions as a mode to mitigate sea turtle bycatch. However, observer and stranding data indicate that these tow times may often be exceeded and result in mortality of sea turtles. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) published a notice of proposed rulemaking in December 2016 to extend TED requirements to other trawl types, however there has been limited

Marine vertebrate species face unprecedented and ever increasing pressures as a result of human activity, primarily fishing, in the global oceans. One area of growing concern has been for the impacts of small-scale fisheries on these species. Over the past decade it has become increasingly clear that these under-studied fisheries have sizeable levels of catch and bycatch of many threatened and endangered species of sea turtles, seabirds and small cetaceans. A decline in natural resources and increased demand resulted in a fast expanding niche market for these products. This stud

Entanglement nets were used to capture 153 green turtles among 16 capture sites. Pooled straight carapace length (SCL; mean ± SE) was 75.1 ± 0.79 cm. Though there was no significant variation in mean SCL among years, there was evidence of a difference in mean SCL among capture sites. Some of the key elements to assess the status of any wildlife population in a given geographical area are the levels of recruitment, survival and mortality. Whilst most of the information on marine turtles has been obtained from nesting sites, turtles spend most of their lives at sea. The conservation status of marine turtles in the southeast Pacific is poorly documented. This is particularly true for countries like Peru, where nesting events are very rare, although five species of turtles from populations from all over the Pacific basin, use these waters as foraging grounds. Marine turtle populations worldwide are threatened by a number of anthropogenic activities, of which fishing is unquestionably one of the most harmful. Though the effects of fisheries mortality have been documented across species, gear types and regions, management intervention remains constrained by data limitations even in well-monitored fisheries in developed nations. The issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing introduces further uncertainty into fisheries management regimes, with a lack of understanding of how IUU fishing activities affect marine turtle populations.
