Abstract This paper investigates the functions of the reflexive pronoun ko 53 to 21/to 21 in Tujia, a Tibeto-Burman (TB) language. Apart from being used as a verb object, the reflexive pronoun in Tujia can be used as an intensifier, indicating “self, non-other”, but it can also be used to create “passive” or “causative” meaning. It is argued that both meanings created by the reflexive pronoun can be accounted for under a decomposition approach. Nowadays, multi-modal discourse, including language, picture, audio and video play a very important role in the translation of folk songs. Under the comprehensive framework of Delu Zhang, this paper analyses the application of multi-modal discourse in the translation of Tujia folk song Long Chuan Diao from four aspects: cultural level, context level, content level and expressive level. The study can better understand Tujia folk songs and transmit Tujia culture. Multi-modal discourse analysis plays an important role in translating and spreading Tujia folk songs in Western Hubei province.

Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive description of the serial verb construction (henceforth SVC) in Tujia. It shows that serial verbs or verb phrases in Tujia are linked by the particle lie 55. lie 55 does not contribute any semantic content to the construction, but only functions as a linking particle. lie 55 is not used for any other purpose in any other structure. Abstract This paper presents a preliminary investigation of nominalization and relativization in Tujia from a typological perspective. We show that there are several nominalizers in Tujia, only two of which are multifunctional: ɕi and ɲie. ɕi can function as a nominalizer, a relativizer, a complementizer, a converbal clause marker or a stance marker. ɲie can function as a genitive marker, a nominalizer, a relative clause marker, a non-relative attributive marker or a stance marker.
