Abstract:
A rash of new festivals, a fashion for calendars and a renamed month all attest to the strength of anniversary culture in the Augustan era, and to Augustus’ own facility for capitalising upon it. We can safely assume that he would have understood, and perhaps even anticipated, that the bimillennium of his death might be commemorated. Whether he would quite have expected the exhibitions, conferences and publications with which twenty-first-century academics chose to mark it is perhaps another matter. This review article examines some of the scholarly fruits of Augustus’ 2014 anniversary, encompassing twelve books which were published that year, took it as an explicit prompt or were developed out of bimillennial conferences. They are tackled in three broad groups, the better to bring out the characteristic interests and approaches of each.

Abstract:
This article is a selective survey of the last twenty years of Amos research, which has witnessed robust discussion in multiple directions. It groups these trends into five very broad areas: (1) the possibility of positing an eighth-century setting for the prophet and the historical reliability of the book, (2) work on the redaction of the book and potential connections to the history of the composition of the Book of the Twelve, (3) theological themes of particular contemporary interest, (4) recent insights into the translation techniques of LXX Amos, and (5) the reception of Amos across the centuries, with a special focus on the views of women and minority and global communities. There is a range of scholarly positions in several of these areas and new questions being asked, all of which portends continued vitality in Amos research in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:
The IT industry is constantly evolving and it's more or less a requirement today for web developers to be familiar with and to be able to develop for all platforms. A technique that has taken hold and is now widely used is responsive design. Developing responsive design means adapting the layout to the viewing environment; the screen size. Another useful method when developing for different devices is the mobile first theory, which means developing for the mobile screen first. This is done to scale down the site and to clear unnecessary information in order to provide a better user experience. In this work we have developed a new design for the site greenb.se, using the mobile first theory to create a responsive website.

Smythe, Dion Clive. "Byzantine perception of the outsider in the eleventh and twelth centuries : a method." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2779.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the portrayal of outsiders in Michael Psellos's Chronographia, Anna Komnene's Alexiad, and Niketas Choniates's Narrative - using sociological theories of deviancy. The twofold aim is to "treat texts seriously", localized in Jakobson's speech-event nexus of addresser, context, content, contact, code and addressee; and secondly to understand the texts as statements of the ideology of the dominant elite. Outsiders are defined (using the labelling orientation) as people successfully defined as deviants; deviant behaviour is whatever they do. The dominant elite creates cultural boundaries, and places individuals in outsider roles on the other side of those boundaries. Outsiders can be understood only in terms of who defines them as deviant; there is no material reality to deviancy. Stereotypes, which identify social categories of people by evaluative trait-characteristics, are necessary elements of human cognition; they become prejudice only when they are overgeneralized, based on too limited data, applied too widely and maintained in the face of contrary empirical evidence. The analysis of the three texts in depth allows the identification of those groups labelled as outsiders by these expositors of the dominant ideology. My conclusion is that these authors portray a picture of the Byzantine outsider, which is coherent between this limited sample group, allowing for individual variation. These authors used stereotypes to conceptualize and encode in the linguistic and lexicographical complexities of their texts the outsiders they identified in their societies. Their presentation uses stereotypes, but does not descend to prejudice.

Abstract:
The focal point of this thesis is my complete transcription of the thirteenth-century Coventry Pontifical manuscript (Cambridge, University Library, Ff. VI. 9). In order to contextualise the Coventry Pontifical manuscript, this thesis comprises two investigative strands. The first is an exploration of the significance of the manuscript in the lives of its medieval users; the interactions between the manuscript and its culture; and the interplay between the manuscript and its users. To further our understanding of the significance of the Coventry Pontifical to its users, this thesis surveys the liturgical practices included in the manuscript, and how these practices and the production of the manuscript required the skills and money of the general population as well as the monastic community. An examination of routines of the time and an overview of the politics and people connected to the Diocese of Coventry and Lichfield follows. Contemplating the people who used the manuscript and how they used it leads to appreciation of the manuscript, and my transcription of it, beyond the significance to the user. It increases awareness of how and why the manuscript was compiled. The second strand uses the Coventry manuscript as a focus for a broader exploration of textual and musical liturgical transmission patterns of insular pontifical manuscripts in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Tracing these patterns of transmission, using a combination of variant categorisation and statistical analysis, reveals any relationships which exist between manuscripts produced across medieval Britain. The analysis, combined with consideration of the nature of pontifical exemplars, allows me to explore how pontifical transmission differs from that of other types of liturgical manuscript. This investigation of transmission patterns pinpoints the relative position of the Coventry manuscript in its insular liturgical setting, and thus emphasises the significance of my complete transcription of the manuscript to current scholarship.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose and objective The purpose of this study was to survey the use of mobile phones amongst people and how it coincides with mental health. We also wanted to investigate whether or not we could create a behavioral change amongst the mobile phone users and thereby see if it affected their mental health. To achieve this objective we emanated from two questions: (1) Is there a relationship between Smartphone addiction and subjective mental health? (2) Can a short intervention, where you decrease the time spent on smartphones amongst users improve their subjective well-being? Method To get an insight in how widespread the use of mobile phones is and if it affects subjective well-being we chose to collect data through surveys because it was time effective and gave a wide group of people. To be able to create a behavioral change we concluded we had to actively interact with the respondents, so we chose to perform an intervention. During the intervention the participants would reduce their mobile phone usage to the greatest extent possible to see if their mental health could be improved. Result According to the correlation analysis, there is a weak relationship r = - 0,218 between mental health and smartphone addiction which is statistically significant (p=0.013). Analysis of survey data showed a large group classified as smartphone addicted = 48.2% and 51.8% as non-smartphone addicted. This shows that more people are smartphone addicted in this study than other studies have found. The intervention failed due to many dropouts. Conclusions The result showed a weak negative correlation between mental health and smartphone addiction. Causal correlation was not clarified and further research is required on the subject in order to determine whether mental health issues leads to more smartphone usage or if a lot of smartphone usage leads to mental health issues by itself.

Abstract:
Um deles realizado por Haakma W. 2011 - “Expert Elicitation to Populate Early Health Economic Models of Medical Diagnostic Devices in Development”.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and one of the main causes of cancer death among females. The breast imaging standard procedures - X-ray mammography, MRI or ultrasound - suffer from some shortcomings such as insufficient specificity or sensitivity or carcinogenic risks (X-ray mammography) and high costs (MRI). Several alternatives have been suggested, among which photoacoustic technologies with near infrared (NIR) light are included. The medical photoacoustic devices merge the advantages of pure optic devices and of pure acoustic devices minimizing the respective disadvantages. Furthermore, the photoacoustic imaging can visualize the angiogenseis due to the associated increased hemoglobin concentration, with optical contrast and acoustic resolution, without the use of ionizing radiation or contrast agents and is therefore theoretically considered an ideal method for breast imaging. Under this principle, the department of Biomedical Photonic Imaging of University of Twente has designed an innovative device – The Twente Photoacoustic Mammoscope (PAM). The PAM optical source is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm with 5/ 10 ns pulses and a 10 Hz repetition rate. For acoustic signal reception PAM has a flat array ultrasound detector with 590 elements in a parallel plate geometry. The measured lateral and axial resolution is 2.3 to 3.9 mm and 2.5 to 3.3. mm respectively. The assessment of PAM is in process and can be placed at the main stream HTA – phase I: The first of 3 phases of clinical trials has started in December 2010 and so far, 3 HTA studies were conducted to assess the viability of its clinical implementation. However the cost-effectiveness of PAM is still unknown. The aim of this project is to implement and evaluate Markov models through Monte Carlo simulation in order to assess the cost-effectiveness of PAM in different scenarios. The tested scenarios were aggregated in 3 distinct groups: in the regular stages of the clinical pathway of breast cancer – screening, early diagnosis and late diagnosis – named Group I, and in the screening of multiple groups of high to moderate risk of breast cancer as suggested by the guidelines, named Group II. The last group of scenarios- Group III had the purpose of measuring the cost-effectiveness for a hypothetical technology that has sensitivities or specificities 5% higher than the standard of care and the same cost of PAM. The scenarios were tested simultaneously in 2 different epidemiological and economical contexts: Portugal and Netherlands. The obtained results for the different scenarios were analysed, specifically the CE ratio and the ICER ratio considering a willingness to pay threshold for each country. The cost-effectiveness results suggest that the clinical application of PAM is viable in high to moderate risk groups of breast cancer with dense breasts. Therefore, the future PAM design and development should continue to pursuit a constant effectiveness in dense and non dense breasts because it is one of the major competitive advantages of PAM.

Abstract:
We present a multilingual Named Entity Recognition approach based on a robust and general set of features across languages and datasets. Our system combines shallow local information with clustering semi-supervised features induced on large amounts of unlabeled text. Understanding via empiricalexperimentation how to effectively combine various types of clustering features allows us to seamlessly export our system to other datasets and languages. The result is a simple but highly competitive system which obtains state of the art results across five languages and twelve datasets. The results are reported on standard shared task evaluation data such as CoNLL for English, Spanish and Dutch. Furthermore, and despite the lack of linguistically motivated features, we also report best results for languages such as Basque and German. In addition, we demonstrate that our method also obtains very competitive results even when the amount of supervised data is cut by half, alleviating the dependency on manually annotated data. Finally, the results show that our emphasis on clustering features is crucial to develop robust out-of-domain models. The system and models are freely available to facilitate its use and guarantee the reproducibility of results.

Abstract:
Recently, exclusive lasso has demonstrated its promising results in selecting discriminative features for each class. The sparsity is enforced on each feature across all the classes via L12-norm. However, the exclusive sparsity of L12-norm could not screen out a large amount of irrelevant and redundant noise features in high-dimensional data space, since each feature belongs to at least one class. Thus, in this paper, we introduce a novel regularization called "exclusive L21", which is short for "L21 with exclusive lasso", towards robust flexible feature selection. The exclusive L21 regularization is the mix of L21-norm and L12-norm, which brings out joint sparsity at inter-group level and exclusive sparsity at intra-group level simultaneously. An efficient augmented Lagrange multipliers based optimization algorithm is proposed to iteratively solve the exclusive L21 regularization in a row-wise fashion. Extensive experiments on twelve benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed regularization and the optimization algorithm as compared to state-of-the-arts.

In ASME 2005 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2005-84551.

Abstract:
In this article kinematic analysis of a 3 Leg-Spherically Actuated (3SA) parallel manipulator will be addressed. Since each leg has a spherical actuator (three inputs for each leg) and manipulator has three legs; totally, there are nine inputs. Due to the fact that the manipulator has six degree of freedom, only six independent inputs are needed. Thus actuation could be done in different ways. If the triangles representing base and platform are equilateral, there are twenty different ways of actuation that should be studied during forward kinematic analysis. Rather than adopting the standard Denavit-Hartenberg approach, a simple method for forward kinematic analysis for all these different ways of twenty ways has been introduced. Considering all these ways, it will be shown that at least two and at most six nonlinear algebraic equations should be solved during forward kinematic analysis, while choosing the standard approach twelve nonlinear equations should be solved for each way of actuation. A unique inverse kinematic method has been presented. The singularly analysis for all these different ways of actuation has also been studied. For two out of the twenty different ways, closed form solutions for the singularity analysis have been obtained, for other ways; conditions which result in singularity configuration has been presented and simulation justified the proposed criteria.

"Stress, Strain and Plastic Instability of Internally Pressurized Pipes With Axis-Symmetric and Narrow Volumetric Flaws: Analysis and Experiments." In 2006 International Pipeline Conference. Full text
Abstract:
The mechanical behavior of internally pressurized pipes with volumetric flaws is analyzed. The two possible straining modes are identified and each is studied by means of an idealized flaw: the bending strain is associated with axis-symmetric flaws and the membrane strain to narrow axially oriented flaws. Linear elastic shell solutions for stress and strain are proposed. The plastic behavior is studied and equations for predicting the pressure at which the pipe fails by plastic instability are developed. The analytical solutions were validated by comparison with finite element simulations and burst tests on 3” diameter pipes. Two materials with very dissimilar plastic behavior, low carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel, were used on the experiments. Twenty-nine burst testes were carried out with pipe sections with axis-symmetric flaws and twelve were performed on pipe sections with narrow flaws. The analytical models for stress and strain agreed well with the numerical model, and both the analytical and the numerical predictions showed good correlation with the experimentally observed burst pressures.

"Comparison of Transfer Lengths in Pretensioned Concrete Railroad Ties Subjected to Different Magnitudes of Rail Loads." In 2016 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2016-5781.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to quantify the effect of different reinforcement types on transfer lengths, an extensive study was conducted with the selected group of twelve different reinforcement types. These reinforcements are extensively used to produce concrete railroad ties across the world. These employed twelve (12) different types are of 5.32 mm diameter wires with different surface indent geometries. A research team from Kansas state university visited a PCI certified concrete tie manufacturing plant during January 2013. During the plant visit, four (4) concrete railroad ties were cast for each reinforcement type for a total of 48 ties. Considerable part of the study conducted at the plant was previously published by the authors. However for effective understanding, brief explanation of the tie manufacturing process will be presented in this paper. Strain measuring points were mounted on the bottom surface of a concrete railroad tie during the casting process. Proper measures were taken to safeguard these strain measuring points during loading. Transfer lengths were calculated using these mounted strain measuring points. Transfer length measurements were calculated at the plant, immediately after the application of prestressing forces to the concrete ties. After the casting process, two ties for each reinforcement type were stored at plant location for approximately one year and the remaining two ties (companion ties) for the each reinforcement types were shipped and stored at Kansas state university. Transfer length measurements were again calculated at this stage for all 48 ties. Ties stored at plant location were later subjected to cumulative in-track railroad loading of 85 million gross tons over six (6) months period of time. Whereas, the companion ties stored at Kansas state university were not subjected to any loading. Transfer lengths are calculated and compared at this stage and presented [4] in the past. Ties which were already subjected to 85 million gross tons were further loaded to cumulative total of 236.3 million gross tons and the companion ties stored at Kansas State University were not subjected to any loading. Transfer lengths for the ties (twenty four) that were subjected 263.3 million gross tons were calculated and presented in this paper with detailed explanation. Transfer length behavior under different magnitudes of loading is also presented along with the discussion.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Germ-cell tumors (GCT) are the commonest ovarian neoplasm in the first two decades of life. Aim: To study the profile of ovarian GCT in children and their outcome. Methods: Retrospective study of all cases of malignant ovarian GCT in the pediatric age (up to 18 years) was done from January 2002 to December 2015. The medical records of all admitted cases during this period were reviewed and the data was analysed with respect to age at diagnosis, clinical presentation, tumor markers, surgical stage, tumor histology, therapy, clinical course, and outcome. Results: Girls with malignant ovarian GCT were seen at our institute during the study period. Out of these 25 underwent treatment. Mean age at presentation was 11.7 years (range: 3-18 years). Abdominal pain was the commonest presentation. Twelve (47.3%) had right sided disease, 11 (42%) had left sided disease and 2 had bilateral disease. Twelve cases (57.8%) were diagnosed as stage I disease, 5 (10.5%) as stage II, 7 (26.3%) as stage III and 1 (5.2%) as stage IV. Elevated AFP >1000 was found in 9 (47.3%), elevated B-HCG (>50) in 7 (42%) and elevated LDH (>1000) in 7 (36.8%) patients at presentation. Twenty (73.6%) patients underwent surgery prior to chemotherapy out of which 4 (21%) patients presented after undergoing surgery at other centre. Fourteen (57.8%) patients received 4 cycles of BEP based chemotherapy, 6 (21%) received 3 cycles, 2 (10.5%) received 2 cycles and 1 patient did not receive any chemotherapy as it was mature teratoma. The most common histology was dysgerminoma in 8 (42%) patients followed by mixed germ cell tumor in 4 (21%), teratoma in 3 (15.7%), embryonal carcinoma in 2 (10.5%) and yolk sac tumor and mature teratoma in 1 patient each. Four (21%) patients had relapse on contralateral side which was salvaged. 1 patient presented with relapse who underwent only surgery outside, 1 patient had ovarian torsion. Median follow up is 27months. The event free survival rate was 78.9%. Conclusion: This study confirms an excellent outcome for girls with ovarian germ cell tumor. Patients with advanced surgical stage relapsed frequently. The mainstay of treatment is fertility preserving surgery and cisplatin-based chemotherapy.
