Morkeski, Kate. "In-Stream Hemlock Twig Breakdown and Effects of Reach-Scale Twig Additions on Appalachian Headwater Streams." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33196.

Full text
Abstract:
Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a prominent tree in the forests of eastern North America, where it commonly grows along headwater streams. It is experiencing widespread mortality due to infestations of an introduced insect, the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae). Eliminations of tree species are known to have ecosystem-level effects, and one consequence of hemlock death is a change in allochthonous inputs to headwater streams. I predicted that hemlock twigsâ dendritic structure, abundance, and resistance to decay currently make them highly effective retainers of leaves in headwater streams, with consequences for nutrient uptake. To understand the role of hemlock twigs in streams and to compare their functions to those of a potential replacement species, I (1) quantified the decomposition and microbial colonization of twigs and (2) manipulated twig standing crops to quantify effects on leaf retention and nutrient uptake. Hemlock twigs provide a poor-quality substrate for microbial colonization and growth relative to birch (Betula lenta) twigs and are more resistant to breakdown than birch. Although hemlock twigs appear to be effective in retaining leaves, they do not substantially affect reach-scale uptake of ammonium, which is much more strongly influenced by the timing of leaf inputs. Although hemlock death may subtly change patterns of organic matter accumulation and breakdown, the potentially important effects of hemlock death include changes in large wood inputs, changes in hydrologic regime, and increases in rhododendron cover.

Hulette, Geoffrey, and Geoffrey Hulette. "Twig: A Configurable Domain-Specific Language." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12467.

Abstract:
Programmers design, write, and understand programs with a high-level structure in mind. Existing programming languages are not very good at capturing this structure because they must include low-level implementation details. To address this problem we introduce Twig, a programming language that allows for domain-specific logic to be encoded alongside low-level functionality. Twig's language is based on a simple, formal calculus that is amenable to both human and machine reasoning. Users may introduce rules that rewrite expressions, allowing for user-defined optimizations. Twig can also incorporate procedures written in a variety of low-level languages. Our implementation supports C and Python, but our abstract model can accommodate other languages as well. We present Twig's design and formal semantics and discuss our implementation. We demonstrate Twig's use in two different domains, multi-language programming and GPU programming, and compare Twig against a well-known typemapping system, SWIG.

Sarco-Thomas, Malaika. "Twig dances : improvisation performance as ecological practice." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/936.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis charts the role of dance improvisation performance as a practice of ecology by analyzing data collected from a series of experiments in improvisation. Conducted in a number of locations in Europe and Asia, these experiments examine the usefulness of improvisation performance practices to notions of “ecology” and common understandings of humans’ relationships to our environment. Using “ecology” to describe an investigation of interrelationship as well as a commitment to act with an awareness of one’s actions in the social, mental and natural spheres discussed by Felix Guattari (2000), I outline ways contemporary improvisation practices can facilitate this investigation. To do this I draw on my own experience as a dancer at the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (PARTS) in Brussels from 2004-2006, and as codirector of the TWIG Project in China in 2006. Using the experiences of improvising, learning dance, seeing dance, performing dance, creating scores for dance, and teaching movement improvisation, I argue that ecological practice is defined by its ability to instill a sense of “response ability” and personal agency in its practitioners. As a way of observing and incorporating new knowledge, improvisation functions herein both as a research practice and as the object of study. By improvising and documenting my experiences using a phenomenological lens derived from Merleau-Ponty’s work, I reflect on how practices of awareness in dancing can constitute new ways of knowing. I discuss how improvising can assist awareness of the body’s relationship with the environment at a number of levels including sensory, spatial, temporal, conceptual, social and political. I also investigate the notion of paradox as a theme throughout the thesis and present its usefulness as a way of producing and reflecting upon a practice of bodily research. The term “twig dances” represents an expanded understanding of what I mean by “improvising”, and points to my use of improvisation as a research process. As an action taken “to understand or realize something”, a twig dance is any of a number movement practices which take as their focus an active investigation into relationships between people and the non-human world.

Rao, Praveen. "Indexing XML Data for Efficient Twig Pattern Matching." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194425.

Full text
Abstract:
The Extensible Markup Language XML has become the de facto standard for information representation and interchange on the Internet. In this dissertation, I address the problem of indexing and querying XML in two environments, namely, (a) a traditional environment where data is centrally stored and (b) a growingly popular peer-to-peer (P2P) environment. In a traditional enviroment, the index built over XML data is typicallycentralized. On the other hand, due to the distributed nature of the data in a P2P system, the index is also distributed. Due to the different models of storing data in these two environments, I propose two different XML indexing schemes for efficient query processing. In a traditional environment, a core operation is tofind all occurrences of a given query pattern in the database. I propose a new way of indexing XML documents and processing query patterns. Every XML document in the database is transformed into a sequence of labels by Prüfer's method that constructs a one-to-one correspondence between trees and sequences.During query processing, a query pattern is also transformed into its Prüfer sequence. By performing subsequence matching on the set of sequences in the database, and performing a series of refinement phasesthat I have developed, all the occurrences of a query pattern can be found in the database. Furthermore, I show that all correct answers are found without any false dismissals or false alarms. I present the design, implementation, and experimental evaluation of the PRIX system that I have developed for this purpose.Coupled with the growing popularity of P2P systems, XML is commonly used as an underlying data model for P2P applications to handle the heterogeneity of the data and limited expressiveness of queries. Locating relevant data sources across a large number of participating peers is an important challenge. In this environment, the challenge is to quickly test the existence ofa query pattern in XML documents published by usersrather than finding all their occurrences. PRIX finds all occurrences of a query pattern and hence is not the best solution. Moreover, in a P2P environment, a distributed and decentralized index is necessary. Therefore, I propose a distributed indexing scheme for XML documents to quickly test for existence of query patterns based on polynomial signatures. In this scheme, each XML document is mapped into an algebraic signature that captures the structural summary of the document. The participating peers in the network collectively maintain a distributed and hierarchical index over the signatures. By virtue of the signature index, the signatures of documents with similar structural characteristics tend to be stored together at the same peer, and a search for document sources is resolved quickly. I present the design, implementation, and empirical evaluation of the psiX system that I have developed for this purpose. The signature scheme proposed in psiX can be applied to querying heterogeneous XML databases.

Ding, Dabin. "Holistic Boolean Twig Pattern Matching for Efficient XML Query Processing." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/811.

Full text
Abstract:
Efficient twig pattern matching is essential to XML queries and other tree-based queries. Numerous so-called holistic algorithms have been proposed for efficiently processing the twig patterns in XML queries. However, a more general form of twig pattern, called Boolean-twig (or B-twig for short), which allows arbitrary combination of an arbitrary number of all the three logical connectives, AND, OR, and NOT, in a twig pattern, has not been adequately addressed. The theme of this study is on holistic (and efficient) B-twig pattern matching using region encoding and Dewey encoding schemes. We first adopt region encoding and propose a novel, direct approach called DBTwigMerge for holistic B-twig pattern matching, which although enjoys certain theoretical ``beauty'' and ``elegance'' but does not always outperform our prior approach, BTwigMerge. Based on the experience gained and in-depth investigation, we then come up with another new and more efficient approach, FBTwigMerge, which is proven to be the overall winner among all the holistic approaches using region encoding. In this study, we also studied the holistic B-twig pattern matching problem using Dewey encoding. The unique properties of Dewey encoding bring challenges and also benefits to this problem. By carefully addressing the challenges, this dissertation finally presents the first Dewey based holistic approach, called DeweyNOT, for efficiently solving the pattern matching problem with a subclass of B-twigs, i.e., twig queries involving arbitrary AND/NOT predicates. Extensive experimental studies have been conducted that demonstrate the viability and outstanding performance of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:
Throughout history, the Latin American region has faced inequalities in the form of ethical issues that derive from institutional corruption, bribery and negligence. Today, the region is facing an ongoing shift in terms of emerging market potential, whilst influences from global trends are establishing roots. The developed opportunities have earned attention from foreign actors, whereas the prospect of the Brazilian market has received considerate devotion from Swedish companies, that are considering Brazil as a major entry point into the region. The historical influences in relation to cultural differences presents challenges in the management of business relations, as well as in the ethical dilemmas that may arise. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain an understanding concerning the significance within the relation between Swedish corporate culture and facing ethical dilemmas in international business, with the particular focus of the Brazilian market. This thesis is based on a qualitative study in the form of interviews with five represented Swedish companies, in order to gain deeper understanding of the complexity and intangibility behind the corporate cultural phenomenon, as well as related experiences with the concentrated market. Moreover, this study is based on a deductive research, given that the specific relation between Swedish corporate culture and managing ethical issues in Brazil is quite unexplored. Thus, it felt required to gain relevant insight prior to this research. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is based on a literature review that is divided into acknowledged concepts of internationalization, culture and business ethics. In turn, the theories discussed are relevant to establish a connection in the form of a synthesis that makes sense of the complexity and intangibility that is surrounding the topic of ethical dilemmas, due to differentiating cultural influences on the notion of business ethics and its implementation. The literature review has in turn acted as substance in the analyzing of the presented empirical data gathered through interviews, where the empirical findings are first displayed case by case and followed by a cross-case analysis. The outcome of this research argues that the corporate cultural values have a significant role in the way Swedish companies can use ethics as a notion of simultaneously shaping the outside perceptions, based on inside operations. Networks are further emphasized as an aspect of transition in the relation between Swedish companies and the Brazilian market, where dilemmas occur when disturbed by differentiating cultural influences. In terms of profitability and long-term sustainability, the extent of implementation where ethical values go, can act as a reinforced tool in terms of creating attractive visibility on the international market.

Abstract: Community structure and dynamics on twig-girdlers populations were investigated from December 2002 to December 2006 in Serra do Japi, Southeaster Brazil. The adults occur between October and May, period utilized mainly for reproduction. It was observed a total of 1113 individuals, grouped in 12 species. From the beetles observed, 1 % was classified as rare species (Oncideres miniata, Oncideres bucki and Oncideres macra), 2,61% as disperse (Oncideres cervina), 37,83% as common (Oncideres impluviata, Oncideres ulcerosa, Oncideres dejeani, Psyllotoxus griseocinetus and Oncideres irrorata) and 59 % as very abundant (Oncideres saga, Oncideres captiosa and Oncideres humeralis). Sex ratio of most ofthe species was of 1: 1 in the recruitment of the populations, and it was deviated towards female in the other months. Abiotic factors, such as precipitation and temperature influenced the dynamics and phenology ofthese populations. In the tribe Onciderini (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), the female girdles the trees by removing the bark and some of the wood using its mandibles. Then, it digs deep into the wood above the cut and lays its eggs. So, the branch breaks and falls on the ground and the larvae develop on the dead stems of their host plants. This study verified both the patters of host plant used by the insect and the species selection and its relation to structural characteristics of plants in Serra do Japi. 15 families of host plants were found in a whole, and they are listed in decreasing order of the most used ones: Vochysiaceae 44,62%, Mimosaceae 14,78%, Melastomataceae 11 ,41 %, Lauraceae 9,35% and Anarcadinaces 5,71 %, the other species summed 14,13% ofthe studied species. O. saga, O. dejeani, O. impluviata and P. griseocinetus were the most poliphagous species. O. irrorata was the only monophagous and specialist specie. Some other aspects like: 1) bioecological parameters of twig girdlers while using each host plant; 2) girdled stem len7 3) stem diameter; 4) cut type of the branch and 5) architectural pattern of the host plant w1 also included in this study. The differences of the diameter average were statistically significant. It was observed that O. saga cut branches of larger diameter ( X = 4,77 ± 0,89 DP). The average number of posture incisions by O. dejeani (X = 64,94 ±1,61 DP) was greater than the other species. There was significative relation between the average diameter and the twig length of the host plants with the reproductive investment (number of eggs/twig) of the twig-girdlers species from Serra do Japi. These relations indicate different reproductive strategies which contribute for reducing inter-specific competition. Likewise, the positive relation between the average size of the twig and the female size of the specie Onciderini indicates organizational standards of their community. The strategies and different behavior among the twig-girdler species were associated with characteristics of the used host plants. For instance: not only physical and chemical defenses but also indirect defenses by insect-plant associations. The diversity of this group of insects found in Serra do Japi was considered high. This, was based on a literature review, and thus shows that the place is environmentally and ecologically balanced in richness of species. Therefore, it is necessary that the site be preserved.

Abstract:
Titanium and its alloys have been extensively investigated due to their wide application in chemical industry, medical implants and aerospace industries. As a significant role in plastic deformation, twinning has been widely studied in hexagonal metals. The local stress state may be modified by twinning, which influences sequential plastic deformation modes such as slips, twinning and secondary twinning. Thus, there is also an urgent demand for understanding the mechanism associated with the twinning-induced deformation, which is useful for the development of predictive capabilities that can describe twinning and twinning-induced sequential events, and their correlations with microstructures. In this work, crystallographic analysis of twin variant selection and twin-twin junctions is applied in commercially pure titanium. A new sequential twinning mechanism that {101̅2} twins are stimulated by the {112̅1} twin-twin junctions (TTJs) is observed by quasi in-situ EBSD. Another sequential twinning mechanism that a {112̅2} compression twin adjoins a {10 1̅ 2} extension twin is found at high angle grain boundaries. Displacement gradient accommodation is used to determine the sequential twin variant while the classical Schmid factor (SF) is not sufficient. Besides, a detailed analysis of the detected 425 {101̅2} double twins inside primary {112̅2} twins reveals that the double twin variants that exhibit specific misorientation with respect to the parent grains are the most frequent. The prevalence of double twins is possible to justify with the prismatic-dislocation mediated nucleation mechanism. When complemented with an apparent SF analysis, the criterion can accurately predict the selection between two variants within the group of the popular double twins. When multiple twin variants are active in the same grain, twin-twin interactions may happen. {112̅2} TTJs can be divided into three types according to the crystallography of {112̅2} twins. A statistical analysis of {112̅2} TTJs reveals that one type is the most popular while other types are rarely activated. The frequency of TTJs can be evaluated by using an apparent SF analysis. The interesting finding is that twin-twin boundaries (TTBs) form in one side of the incoming twin as a TTJ forms. Corresponding to the formation of TTBs based on the interactions of twinning dislocations, interface dislocations in the observed TTBs have lower line energy than those in the un-observed TTBs. Similar operation is applied to the analysis of {112̅1} TTJs

Parents who simultaneously grieve the loss of one twin and nurture the surviving twin experience a paradox of grief and joy. The acute grief of losing a twin coincides with a critical time in the development of the parental role and relationship with the surviving twin. Very few researchers have addressed the unique parenting situation in which one twin infant dies. The aim of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe the experience of parents who lose one twin in utero, at birth, or in the neonatal period. The study question was "What is the parenting experience of mothers and fathers who simultaneously face the grief of the loss of one twin while nurturing the surviving twin during infancy?" Nine parents, recruited via a support group, were interviewed. Systematic content analysis, emphasizing in-vivo coding (participant's own words), was conducted until data saturation was reached. A comprehensive description of the experience of raising a surviving twin was constructed. Four descriptive themes were identified: (1) Living with ambiguity: the irony of raising a lone twin, belonging and not belonging, and at least there is one; (2) Communicating the family journey: telling or not telling, deciding who needs to know, and how many children; (3) Parenting with wonder and worry: doubt and hyper-vigilance, unanswered questions, and the living twin as a unique person; and (4) Life is different now: loss of innocence, honoring both twins, making and keeping relationships, work-life challenges, and accepting that it doesn't go away. Issues raised by parents included the ambiguity and irony of losing one twin, no one understands, multiple losses, and living with this loss. The description of this experience gives insight to the dynamics and burden of this loss. Data from this study can inform pediatric nurses about the issues, concerns, and needs of parents who sustain this kind of loss. Therapeutic interventions based by the tenets of family-centered nursing care can be developed by understanding the long-term effects of grief on parenting

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine instances of naturally occurring conversations between twin siblings. This study uses both conversation analysis and semi-structured interviews to investigate communication patterns and practices in everyday twin-to-twin talk. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What pragmatic features of analytic interest are present in twin-to-twin talk? (2) What pragmatic features of analytic interest are present when twins interact with other members of the family system? There were a total of six sets of twin siblings between the ages of 10 and 15 who engaged in participant self-taping and semi-structured interviews. Although it did not have an observable effect on the findings, there were five sets of dizygotic (fraternal) twins and one set of monozygotic (identical) twins. Eight parents were interviewed and four parents participated in the conversations with the twin siblings. Findings suggest that certain communication practices and Phenomena are present in twin siblings' conversations, though not necessarily uniquely. Simultaneous speech is a conversational practice evident in every set of twin siblings' transcripts, serving as a completion to the other's utterance. In the presence of parents, it functions as a competitive move, other-initiated repair, and entertainment. As the twins conversed alone, extension/completion of the other twin's utterance served as a way to verify reported speech. It functions as support, verification, competition, and a way to gain attention when talking in front of a parent. The joint conversational performance act of code-switching was a practice used for entertainment by the twins when conversing alone. It served as a way to prove a point and to entertain as they interacted with a parent. Conversational phenomena included testing, and speaking for one's twin. Twins engaged in testing while conversing alone to show support for their twin. As they engaged in talk with a parent present, it served as competition/support, role confirmation/enactment, and identification/deidentification between the twin siblings. Speaking for one's twin could only occur while the twins were conversing in front of a parent. It functioned as a competitive move, as support, and as a way to gain attention.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University
Introduction: Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) is a prenatal condition affecting 10-20% of monochorionic – diamniotic (identical) twins and is defined by unbalanced blood flow from one twin to the co-twin. TTTS is staged using the Quintero Staging System (I-V) based on ultrasound and Doppler findings. Even with the staging, TTTS does not have a linear course of progression and lacks predictably in the outcome of the pregnancy. If it does progress and is left untreated, TTTS has a 100% mortality of both twins. There are various treatments for TTTS including septostomy and serial amnioreductions, but the optimal treatment for TTTS is laser ablation of the communicating placental vessels between both twins. These anastomoses are the pathophysiological cause of the syndrome and LASER treatment allows the twins to recover in utero. LASER treatment is associated with risks, including preterm rupture of membranes and preterm labor in 4% of pregnancies and short-and long-term morbidities in 13% of the twin, with the main cause of all morbidity in TTTS infants being prematurity. Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome’s associated unpredictability, lack of linear progression, and various risks and outcomes cause decision-making in TTTS to be problematic for both physicians and parents. Methods: A six-month observational period from July 2012 through January 2013, a cohort of women pregnant with monochorionic – diamniotic twins were referred to the Fetal Treatment Program of New England for assessment of TTTS in their twins by ultrasonography. If diagnosed with TTTS, the twins were staged (I-IV) and treatment recommendations were discussed. At Stage I, patients were recommended for observational, conservative management of weekly ultrasounds. If the patient's ultrasound findings were consistent with Stage II, III, or IV, they underwent LASER treatment. During LASER treatment, communicating anastomoses between both twins were ablated using a diode laser. The women were discharged 2 days post-op and were recommended to have at least weekly ultrasounds for the first two weeks after surgery and then every other week ultrasounds thereafter, to monitor each twin’s health. Abstract:
This article describes the Dana intelligent Twin Steering System designed for mobile vehicles with two steering axles (i.e. with four steering wheels). Current vehicles with four-wheel steering function are typically equipped with a hydraulic configuration where the two steering cylinders are connected in series. This type of connection highlights some limitations on available power, steering comfort and enabling advanced working functions. Dana evolved this type of hydraulic configuration introducing the possibility to disconnect the rear axle from the front one. In this way the rear axle, through the electronic control of its valve block, allows to improve the steering system performance and introduces advanced steering functions compared to the conventional steering systems.

Abstract:
The stories collected within this thesis are, by and large, tales of loss. To be more specific, the following losses occur: one brother, two lovers, a doting former sister-in-law, one's own health, certain freedoms, (including a room with a view,) life itself (twice,) and innocence, forever gone in an absent-minded moment of brutality. Chronology is toyed with somewhat, more so towards the beginning of this collection, less so towards the end. The opening story, "Three Kitchens," is comparatively unique in that it is the sole work written in the first person. While it fits thematically within the larger whole, it has been placed at the beginning based on this one difference. "Birdsong," a tale of regret centered on not leaving when it is prudent to do so, is the next story. The remaining four stories can be thought of as a pair of twins; "Candelabrum," and "The Becoming of Felix Wagner," both occur in 1961 East Berlin, during the construction of the Berlin Wall, (and are more closely entwined than are the last two stories.) "Hernandez," and "Hank Flowers," occur within the span of a few days in mid-1980's rural Pennsylvania, though are only bound together by the thinnest of threads.

Abstract:
Abstract. Digital Twin is a digital replica of physical assets, processes and systems that can be used for various purposes. Virtual model is constructed from the corresponding physical model and these two are then connected by generating real time data using sensors. Resent advances in technology have enabled this, because they have made digital environments cost-efficient. The goal is to simulate the real world with minimal physical resources using machine learning, multivariate analysis and other mathematical techniques. Optimally no physical resources go to waste in testing and development. Runtime validation means monitoring and validating a running system with both digital and physical models. Simulated (digital) model parameters are used in the physical model and then the simulated model is updated with new data from the physical model. Simulated model gains more and more data over time becoming more accurate. This thesis studies the applicability of mathematical models as a prediction tool to predict and validate systems behaviour as a part of simulation. And further, be used in analysis in a digital twin model.

Abstract:
Background: It is possible to replicate the natural process of twinning by means of artificially spitting early-stage embryos in the laboratory. This method has resulted in applications relevant to agricultural and sporting animals. Embryo splitting, or in vitro twinning, has been successfully conducted in various livestock species. Human embryo splitting has been previously reported. The results were, however, inconsistent. Hypothesis: The quality of the human embryos generated by twinning in vitro is comparable to the quality of the embryos created by fertilisation. Experimental Approach: A total of 176 twin embryos created by splitting of 88 human embryos from either early (2 – 5 blastomeres, n = 43) or late (6 – 10 blastomeres, n = 45) cleavage stages were analysed in terms of morphokinetics and developmental competence. Data was compared to the morphometrics of embryos created by fertilisation and leading to pregnancy and live birth following single blastocyst transfer (n = 42). Furthermore, comparative analyses of the expression patterns of early lineage-specific markers (n=21 pairs) of twin blastocysts and non-manipulated Day 5 - 6 blastocysts using immunocytochemistry and human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) derivation was attempted (n = 5 pairs). Finally, comparative analyses of micor RNA (miRNA) profiles in spent blastocyst medium (SBM) of human twin embryos created by blastomere biopsy (n = 7 pairs) and SBM of blastocysts that led to a healthy pregnancy and live birth following embryo transfer (n = 7) were also conducted. Results: Morphokinetic data indicated that human preimplantation development is subject to strict temporal control according to a set ‘developmental clock’. The size of twin embryos generated in the study was directly proportional to the starting cell number of the embryos used in their genesis. Furthermore, the first commitment decision in terms of cell fate was delayed, with the inner cell mass (ICM) becoming distinguishable later in the study group than in the normal control blastocysts. The ICM, if present at all, was small in size and of low quality. Furthermore, most cells in the twin embryos concurrently expressed both ICM and trophectoderm (TE) markers. Finally, the nature of miRNA secretion in SBM consistently varied between the twin and control embryos. Conclusion: Taken together the data suggested that human twin embryos created in vitro by embryo splitting are unsuitable not only for clinical use but also for research purposes.

Eon, Kang Shin. "Hot ductility of TWIP steels." Thesis, City University London, 2014. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/13703/.

Full text
Abstract:
TWIP (Twining Induced Plasticity) steel is very promising AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) grade owing to its superior toughness and ductility. Recently it has attracted the interest of the automotive and steelmaking industries, as the need for reducing weight to provide better fuel efficiency is of paramount importance with the gradual depletion of fuel resources. A high Al, TWIP steel is being commercially developed as Al has been found very well in delaying fraction in deep drawn products. However these steels are difficult to continuous cast and cracking can occur at the slab surface. Therefore it becomes very important to gain an understanding of the cause of this cracking, in order to prevent their occurrence. To assess the likelihood of the cracking in these high Al TWIP steel slabs (1~1.5%Al, 0.6%C, 18%Mn), conventional hot tensile tests were performed to simulate the continuous casting process. A variety of TWIP steels were tested in order to determine the influence of such factors as chemical composition, cooling rate and thermal cycle on hot ductility. Using a cooling rate of 60oC/min after heating to 1250oC, ductility was generally <40% RA (Reduction of Area) indicating that these high Al TWIP steels it will be difficult to cast without transverse cracking occurring. The 1.5%Al containing steels had worse ductility than the low Al containing steels (0.02%Al) because of the presence of large amounts of AlN precipitated at the austenite grain boundaries. Reducing the Al and N level improved ductility. Higher strength Nb/V high Al containing TWIP steels were also examined although ductility was likely to be worse than the simpler microalloying free TWIP steels as was confirmed. Increasing the cooling rate from 60 to 180oC/min after melting caused the ductility to further deteriorate and high N levels produced only a small reduction in the ductility, probably because ductility is so poor. Increasing the S level from 0.003 to 0.01% caused the ductility to deteriorate in TWIP steels free of microalloying. Increasing the S level to 0.023% caused no further deterioration in ductility even though the MnS volume fraction increased. The worse ductility in the higher S steels was not caused by a simple increase in the sulphide volume fraction but more a consequence of the change from coarse hexagonal plate AlN, which are mainly within the matrix and so have little influence on the hot ductility, to very long dendritic rod precipitates, which are situated at the dendritic or close to the austenite grain boundaries. This dendritic precipitation was rarely observed in the low S steel. The MnS inclusions appeared to act as nucleation sites for the precipitation of AlN and when there was few inclusions precipitation of AlN was mainly confined to the matrix. The ductility of Nb containing high Al, TWIP steels was very poor in the as-cast condition. Adding B and Ti still gave rise to extremely poor ductility when a cooling rate of 60 oC/min was used but reducing it to 12oC/min caused the ductility to improve so that RA values were now close to the 35~40% RA value required to avoid transverse cracking. To improve ductility B and Ti additions were examined. 0.04%Ti and 0.002%B are required to ensure good hot ductility in high Al, TWIP steels. Sufficient Ti is needed to remove all the N as TiN so preventing AlN precipitating as films over the austenite grain surfaces. B is also needed as it can segregate to the boundaries and strengthen them. A SIMS technique confirmed that B had indeed segregated to the boundaries. The slower cooling rate 10~15oC/min compared to 60oC/min will result in the optimum segregation of B as well as coarsening the TiN precipitates so they are no longer effective in reducing the ductility. Following all these recommendations, i.e. a low S level, slow secondary cooling rate, a Ti level above the stoichiometric for TiN and a boron addition of 0.002%, transverse cracking was avoided commercially in these very difficult to cast high strength TWIP steels.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines twins' negotiations of identity across the lifecourse. Split into two main parts - structuring contexts and agency contexts - it draws upon Jenkins' theory of social identity to examine the interplay between structure and agency as identities are constructed and reconstructed across the lifecourse. Importantly, reflecting current theorising within the sociology of childhood, it illustrates how children can and should be considered to be competent social actors. Even though children have their childhoods structured for them by their parents, children take an active role in shaping their own and each other's childhoods. The body, space and talk provide three important resources for helping twins to variously play up and play down their identities as twins. Discursively constructed as both a concentrated version of siblingship and an intensification of the symbol of the child, twinship is something that children are expected to (in the main) grow out of. Leaving behind the sameness and togetherness they once shared as children are vital signifiers that they are 'growing up' successfully. However this thesis shows that although, on the one hand, children are often keen to show that they are following this normative timetable, on the other hand, it is evident that they do not simply move from being twins to being adults but rather may try to take up and exit their identities as twins in different situations and with varying degrees of success. Identity then is always in process, moving between various possibilities and emerging from social interaction between embodied actors.

Abstract:

"Twin screw granulation : granule property optimisation." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20916/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to design granule properties with narrower size distributions and controlled bulk strength through the optimisation of formulation parameters and processing parameters in twin screw granulation with a consideration of binder in solid and liquid forms, respectively. In this thesis, lactose (soluble) and microcrystalline cellulose (insoluble) were chosen as the objective powders. Hydroxypropyl cellulose was used as the main binding excipient. From a perspective of formulation development, a novel approach to predict the optimal L/S ratio for twin screw granulation was developed through the study of single drop behaviour, which reduces the waste from trial and error in formulation development process, in order to producing the granule with narrower size distribution. In addition, the solid binder particle size in formulation was studied. Through evaluating the binding capability of different sized HPC and sieved lactose, it was found that the solid binder with smaller particle size could achieve better binding capabilities which is important on granule size distribution and strength. Moreover, a new solid binder-micronized lactose was evaluated and examined for twin screw granulation. Due to its instant dissolution rate, it was proved to be excellent in binding capability and also leads to a produce of more uniformed granule for both materials. On the other hand, investigations from processing parameter to design the granule properties was also carried out. At first, granulation temperature, especially the liquid temperature was studied. It was found to be effective to enhance the binding capability of HPC in both forms. In addition, more uniformed granule for both material could be obtained when a high temperature applied, especially when HPC solution was used. In addition, process parameters including screw speed and configurations was studied with a constant materials mass in the barrel (Barrel loading, g). This study clarified the effect of process parameter especially screw speed on granule properties which is quite contradictory in the literature. It was found that similar to the use of kneading elements, the screw speed is quite important in narrowing granule size distribution and enhance granule strength especially when kneading elements were used.

Buckney, David. "Clearance management in twin screw compressors." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/18235/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the performance of twin screw compressors is heavily dependent on the rotor clearances within them, chamber models, used as design aids, allow for the specification of their magnitude and distribution but do not account for how these may vary during operation, as a result of internal temperature changes caused by the compression process. A validated procedure has therefore been developed to enable a chamber model to predict compressor performance, while including the effects of rotor and casing distortion resulting from dependant thermal effects. This has been achieved by the use of surface boundary mapping to calculate the rotor and casing temperature exposure within the compression chamber resulting from initial performance estimates. These detailed temperature distributions are processed analytically using appropriate assumptions that allow calculation of component temperatures and thermal growth. A program for calculation of leakage area curves has been adapted to support locally calculated variations in clearances. These updated area curves can then be fed back into the chamber model in an iterative procedure to simulate performance with thermally distorted clearances. The inclusion of thermal clearance corrections generally improved the accuracy of the chamber model when predictions from it were compared with test results over a wide range of operating pressures and temperatures. Furthermore, this work was found to be applicable in the evaluation of the interlobe clearance distribution between the rotors. Predicting clearance distortions and likely areas of rotor to rotor contact at a particular operating duty allows clearances to be optimised for the correct balance between performance and reliability; the results thus obtained were supported by findings from available test and tear down results.

Abstract:
The moral hazard of four groups of agents determines the likelihood of crises. Chapter 2 is on banks'moral hazard. The question is, how to optimally regulate heterogeneous banks ? It shows that the banks which have higher cost borrowing are more likely to gamble, so they must be subject to more strict capital requirements. Chapter 3 is on banks' and depositors' moral hazard. It explains why capital regulations may be inadequate and whether market discipline can be established through subordinated debt requirement. Chapter 4 is on international investors' and local governements' moral hazard. It identifies the market failures that lead to excessive hot money flows to developing countries : International investors overlend because there are externalities among them; local governments overborrow because they maximize their short term private benefits. It proposes that the capital flows to a country should be constrained to the foreign currency generating capacity of that country

Eyring, Andrew Stuart. "Analysis of Closed-Loop Digital Twin." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9242.

Abstract:
Given recent advancements in technology and recognizing the evolution of smart manufacturing, the implementation of digital twins for factories and processes is becoming more common and more useful. Additionally, expansion in connectivity, growth in data storage, and the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) allow for greater opportunities not only with digital twins but closed loop analytics. Discrete Event Simulation (DES) has been used to create digital twins and in some instances fitted with live connections to closely monitor factory operations. However, the benefits of a connected digital twin are not easily quantified. Therefore, a test bed demonstration factory was used, which implements smart technologies, to evaluate the effectiveness of a closed-loop digital twin in identifying and reacting to trends in production. This involves a digital twin of a factory process using DES. Although traditional DES is typically modeled using historical data, a DES system was developed which made use of live data with embedded machine learning to improve predictions. This model had live data updated directly to the DES model without user interaction, creating an adaptive and dynamic model. It was found that this DES with machine learning capabilities typically provided more accurate predictions of future performance and unforeseen near future problems when compared to the predictions of a traditional DES using only historic data

Shaik, Aamir Malik, and Matadha Sidhvin Dulevale. "Digital Twin : Visualization-Assisted Corrective Maintenance." Thesis, KTH, Mekatronik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-288098.

Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the significance of the Digital Twin based data-driven solution, in helping corrective maintenance technicians leverage their multi-disciplinary engineering skills to solve complex mechatronic problems. Due to the complex mechatronic nature of the faults, human involvement is necessary for corrective maintenance. Even today, many industries perform corrective maintenance by following methods that are both time inefficient and error prone. Software/AI based solutions have been widely reported to have failed due to neglect of human aspect in maintenance. The role of human cannot be completely replaced by software systems yet. Standard maintenance practices such as FMEA and RCA are costly, time consuming and susceptible to errors. On the other side, Digital Twin (DT) based solutions have shown to have improved management and effectiveness of maintenance by considering the human aspect. However, for corrective maintenance, the solution is still in its conceptual stage. There is a need to practically implement a Digital Twin based solution and quantitatively evaluate its significance. Recent studies have shown that Digital Twin concept, built on model-based approach, has a tremendous potential in providing all the essential data required to control the behaviour of a network of physical devices, and at the same time, virtually monitor their real-world states effectively. This thesis first attempts to develop user-centric visualizations built on a fully integrated digital twin of a complex Cyber Physical Production System (CPPS), and then it tries to evaluate its effectiveness (in terms of correctness and efficiency) in solving the corrective maintenance problem. Experimental results show that when the corrective maintenance task is assisted by user-centricvisualizations from a real-time Digital Twin, it significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of the maintenance technician by about 24% and 52,4% respectively. Further, a post-experimental qualitative analysis explains that it is not any visualization but a Digital Twin based data-driven visualization, built on the user requirements that helped perform the corrective maintenance task more effectively.

Trias, T. (Tuulikki). "Inter-twin and parent-twin relationships and mental health:a study of twins from adolescence to young adulthood." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514282167.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The sample consisted of 419 twins, born in 1965–1973, from Northern Finland who had been followed at ten-year intervals, at 2–10 years, 12–20 years and at 22–30 years of age. Data on psychosomatic symptoms, parent-twin and inter-twin relationships were elicited, and twins completed the Children's Depression Inventory modified for age. Middle adolescence appeared to be the most difficult phase of puberty for twins as far as depressive and psychosomatic/somatic symptoms were concerned. When different twin pairs were evaluated separately, the males of opposite-sex twin pairs seemed to be in the most favourable position, particularly in late adolescence, as they reported least depressive symptoms. Depressive and psychosomatic symptoms were evaluated in relation to parental preference among young adult twins. Parental preference was evaluated in two directions: which one of the parents was reported to feel as being closer to the twin – experienced parental preference evaluated by the twin, and which one of the parents the twin felt closer to – twin's own preference. Those males who were equally close to both parents (experienced parental preference) had least total depressiveness, while females in intermediate situation had the highest self-confidence and least anhedonia and nervousness. According to twins' own preference, twins who felt equally close to both parents had least total depressiveness and anhedonia. The intermediate position seems to be the best alternative, as these twins had the least symptoms. Psychosomatic and depressive symptoms were evaluated in relation to co-twin dependence in young adult twins. MZ twins, especially MZ females, reported most often co-twin dependence at all ages. There were no significant differences in depressive symptoms between dependent and independent twins. Twin's subjective experience about co-twin dependence appeared to be important for the twin's mental well-being, as dependence-independence imbalance within twin pair was associated with elevated levels of depressive symptom reporting, especially in twins who perceived themselves as dependent and the co-twin as independent. Dominance-submissiveness between co-twins and its relationship to mental health was assessed in young adulthood. Dominance-submissiveness in the twin relationships was assessed separately in three domains of life: physical and psychological dominance-submissiveness and the role of a spokesperson. Submissiveness in the psychological domain seemed to be associated with increased depressiveness, nervous complaints and psychosomatic symptoms in males of male-female twin pairs. Among females of same-sex twin pairs, submissiveness in the psychological domain was most clearly associated with depressive symptoms. We conclude that being submissive, especially in the psychological domain, to a female twin partner seems to be stressful, whereas it is easier, especially for females, to be submissive to a male twin partner. This was in contrast to co-twin dependency, which was experienced positively when occurring towards a twin sister.
