Abstract:
My paper suggests that the Twilight saga’s enormous popularity is closely tied to its author’s tension-filled relationship with her fans, who claim ownership of her text by forcing their own interpretations through online media. The result is that through engaging with her fans, Stephenie Meyer actually empowers the Twilight fandom and alters the role readers play in the tri-part relationship of reader, author, and text. Fan studies and reception theory help me to effectively examine this dynamic by considering interpretations of what is “canon,” representations of women, and the creation of new Twilight books.

Abstract:
This paper examines a key trope within much contemporary paranormal romance: the absence, or ineffectiveness, of the father. The first part of the essay develops an analysis of this aspect of the genre (in the Twilight Saga especially) through the work of René Girard, Luce Irigaray, and Juliet MacCannell. Of particular importance here is the extent to which Twilight and similar narratives stage female self-sacrifice as a pre-condition for the redemption of the hero and the restoration of patriarchal bonds initially compromised by some crisis in the effective functioning of paternal authority. The second section extends this analysis to consider ways in which paranormal romances featuring werewolves and vampires shift away from this conservative and reductivist romance paradigm so as to affirm and contest heteronormative, paternalistic models of masculinity and sexual desire.

Abstract:
This paper aims to make a comparison and investigation between three popular vampire fictions, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire and Stephanie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga in order to show a development of the vampire. During the investigation it has become clear that the vampire over a decade has become an object that writers continue to reinvent and humanize. Concepts of Self and Other are thus important terms in this paper in the attempt to analyze the reinvention and humanization of the vampire myth. In Stoker’s Dracula, the vampire will be discussed from an Eastern and Western perspective where hence the vampire figures as an Oriental demon that in every way is the opposite from the British Empire. Rice’s novel, Interview of the Vampire shows a seemingly more humanized vampire that is less Evil, whilst Meyer’s The Twilight Saga demonstrates a vampire that is entirely human, however, with “special” abilities.

Abstract:
9/11 attacks open the 21st Century into the fear of the Other, which is coincidentally at the core of the Gothic tradition. In post-911 Gothic texts, the tension of Self and Other can be seen from the gothic family (representing homeland and country) and the gothic monster (representing foreign, dangerous intruder) respectively. This essay is a close study of two sets of Hollywood films dealing with such tension - Twilight saga and The Hills Have Eyes duology. It is argued, with Foucault’s notion of Power/Knowledge, that such Hollywood gothic productions further create and hence reinforce the fear of, but not suppress, the Other. The 21st Century Gothic genre is therefore no longer subversive, but appropriated to educate the unaware public.

Abstract:

"Writing Mormonism:vampires and werewolves in the Twilight Saga as exemplars for an ideal way of living." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201305301389.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of my thesis is Writing Mormonism — Vampires and Werewolves in the Twilight Saga as Exemplars for an Ideal Way of Living. In my study I examined four novels written by Stephenie Meyer, commonly known as the Twilight saga. It consists of following books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Firstly, my aim was to look for reasons why the vampires and werewolves in Meyer’s novels are so different from those in earlier horror literature. Secondly, I was interested in finding out, if the author’s religious beliefs had impact on her writing and in what ways. For theoretical background I read literature about vampires, werewolves and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church). Regarding vampire literature Nina Auerbach was my main source. She claims that throughout time the vampire image has been influenced by the current society and political surroundings, and thus supported my argument that Stephenie Meyer’s religious beliefs had an impact on her writing. Regarding werewolves I read Leena Peltonen’s article in which she tells about the werewolf image in detail — from their origin to features, ways of changing, and lastly the werewolves in literature. I used this to show similarities and differences to Meyer new, altered werewolf image. In addition, I got to know the holy books of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of which the Book of Mormon is the most important. I found similarities between the teachings of the Book of Mormon and the vampire authorities as well as the vampire transformations in in Twilight. Furthermore, I read researches on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to be able to recognise Mormon features in Meyer’s writing. Among this theoretical background were texts written by Rodney Stark, Jon Krakauer and Lori Beaman — each giving a slightly different approach to the religion. The span reached from describing violent fundamentalists over the average member of the LDS Church to Mormon housewives. I was able to show that Stephenie Meyer’s novels portray in a rather subtle way an ideal way of living — from the Mormon point of view. The vampires of the Cullen coven stand for an ideal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ family: they are wealthy, educated and beautiful and have strong family bonds. All vampires and werewolves in the Twilight saga form a livelong, even eternal, bond of love. Premarital sex and other things forbidden by the LDS Church, such as alcohol or caffeine, are not present in the novels. Furthermore, I found similarities between the authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the vampire authorities as well as werewolf leaders in the Twilight saga. Lastly I discussed the parallels of converting to Mormonism and transforming into a vampire or a werewolf in the series. I showed clearly in my thesis that the religious background of the author Stephenie Meyer has influenced her writing. It would be interesting to study novels written by other Mormon writers and to see if there are comparable parallels
Pro Gradu tutkielmani aihe oli tutkia, kuinka Stephenie Meyerin kirjoittaman Twilight-sarjan vampyyrit ja ihmissudet edustavat ihanteellista elämäntapaa Myöhempien Aikojen Pyhien Jeesuksen Kristuksen Kirkon (eli Mormoniuskonnon) näkökulmasta. Twilight-sarjan neljä kirjaa (Twilight eli Houkutus, New Moon eli Uusikuu, Eclipse eli Epäilys ja Breaking Dawn eli Aamunkoi) olivat tutkimukseni perustana. Lisäksi heillä on vahvan perhesiteet.

Abstract:
This essay examines the sadomasochistic relationship between the main characters of the Twilight Saga from a psychoanalytic perspective, and looks at the family and gender roles in the Saga from a post-feministic view. Aspects also considered are the portrayal of female sexuality as something dangerous and negative, recreational sex as something perverted, and the pro-marriage and anti-abortion propaganda in the last two novels. The purpose of the essay is to reveal how the author’s personal, and to some extent religious, beliefs and values are validated through the storyline; how the relationship between the main characters, as well as their personal psychological and physical health, change after matrimony and parenthood.

Martin, Shelley-Ann. "Robert Pattison as the object of desire: an investigation into the representation of the Twilight saga in online media." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1014075.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to provide researchers in the development of media studies with research into understanding the star as the object of desire in a contemporary context, using Robert Pattinson as the star and The Twilight Saga, which made him famous, as an example of the effects that the use of social and online media have on audiences in terms of their perception and identification of a particular star. This study drew from literature and theories such as stardom, star as the object of desire, audience theory, fantasy, desire and escapism as well as theory on globalisation, the mass media and online and social media. Whilst social and online media have been in existence for a number of years, there is little research that has been performed in order to determine whether or not the use of social and online media directly affect users’ understanding and perception of certain stars and films. There has also been little research performed in order to gain an understanding of fantasy and desire, in terms of films and film stars, outside the constraints of the cinema. This study examined this notion, noting that The Twilight Saga has been successful production worldwide, in order to discover whether or not the use of social and online media perpetuates obsession in the fans and audience members. The first part of the study that was conducted, applied certain theories discussed and developed in the literature review, to Robert Pattinson and The Twilight Saga in order to obtain a better understanding of the star and the film series in terms of cinema, stardom, fantasy and escapism and online and social media. A comparative case study of six online articles, from prominent online sources featuring Pattinson, was then conducted in order to investigate Pattinson’s image and status in the online community. Finally, a content analysis of various online and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube was performed in order to find out what type of information and imagery was being generated about Pattinson and the Saga as well as to investigate how fans and followers engaged with the different media channels and what kinds of comments they were making about the star and the Saga. It was found that Pattinson, the character he plays in the film series, Edward Cullen, and The Twilight Saga have a large presence on key social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, with a vast amount of followers and fans; Facebook and Twitter being the most popular and interactive media avenues. It was also found that Pattinson, Edward and The Twilight Saga, through the avid use of the social media tools, elicited and incited signs of obsession, fantasy and desire within an extensive amount of fans and followers, outside the constraints of the cinema

Firestone, Amanda Jayne. ""Is That What You Dream About? Being a Monster?": Bella Swan and the Construction of the Monstrous-Feminine in The Twilight Saga." Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5217.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that Bella Swan is a representation of Barbara Creed's monstrous-feminine which serves to reinforce ideologies that insist women are abject, inherently dangerous to men, and threatening to a patriarchal status quo. Through close-textual analysis of The Twilight Saga, I demonstrate how the monstrous-feminine frames the hysterical teenage body, hypersexuality, and eternal motherhood as simultaneously unacceptable and unavoidable. These negative women's stereotypes continue to persist in dominant popular culture, and this doublebind is overcome only by the impossible perfection of vampirism. The monstrous-feminine invites constructions of teenage bodies as unstable and unreliable, women's sexuality as dangerous and impure, and motherhood as a requirement for a complete identity. These constructions are particularly dangerous in Young Adult literature and particularly inspirational in fanfiction.

Herselman, Charlene. "From ‘logging capital’ to ‘tourism phenomenon’ : the impact of literary tourism on Forks, WA., United States of America." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/45925.

Full text
Abstract:
Literary tourism refers to any travel inspired by literature. This dissertation considers literary tourism from the perspective of a contemporary literary tourism attraction. It investigates the origins of literary tourism both in the historical context as well as in academic writing as interdisciplinary research between geography and literature. The current state of literary tourism research is also considered and the main research themes at present are identified, that is, authenticity and who the literary tourists are. This study also considers what the future might hold for literary tourism by looking at popular contemporary examples, including the works of J.K. Rowling, G.R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dan Brown, Stieg Larsson and L.J. Smith. In this context, literary tourism’s reciprocal relationship with film tourism is unpacked. This dissertation then moves on to discuss the main focus of this investigation. A mere decade ago, the world was unaware of a book series called The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Yet in a few short years, the literary tourism associated with this series has turned a small town in northwest Washington State into a tourism phenomenon. This study considers the development, extent and impact of literary tourism on this town, called Forks. It also considers other literary and film tourism sites associated with The Twilight Saga to show the vast range of the impact literature can have on tourism.

Abstract:
(Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) та американський комп'ютерно-анімаційний комедійно-драматичний фільм «Думками навиворіт» (Inside Out).
