Abstract:
My paper suggests that the Twilight saga’s enormous popularity is closely tied to its author’s tension-filled relationship with her fans, who claim ownership of her text by forcing their own interpretations through online media. The result is that through engaging with her fans, Stephenie Meyer actually empowers the Twilight fandom and alters the role readers play in the tri-part relationship of reader, author, and text. Fan studies and reception theory help me to effectively examine this dynamic by considering interpretations of what is “canon,” representations of women, and the creation of new Twilight books.

Abstract:
This paper examines a key trope within much contemporary paranormal romance: the absence, or ineffectiveness, of the father. The first part of the essay develops an analysis of this aspect of the genre (in the Twilight Saga especially) through the work of René Girard, Luce Irigaray, and Juliet MacCannell. Of particular importance here is the extent to which Twilight and similar narratives stage female self-sacrifice as a pre-condition for the redemption of the hero and the restoration of patriarchal bonds initially compromised by some crisis in the effective functioning of paternal authority. The second section extends this analysis to consider ways in which paranormal romances featuring werewolves and vampires shift away from this conservative and reductivist romance paradigm so as to affirm and contest heteronormative, paternalistic models of masculinity and sexual desire.

Abstract:
The article presents an analysis of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels as modern literary fairy-tales. To this end, the discussion will refer to structuralist critics, and identify “narrative functions” from folktales (stock images and episodes, stock character functions, characteristic sequences of episodes), used by Meyer in her vampire novels. As it turns out, Meyer modified folklore material to sustain a long and variously themed narrative: by embedding numerous subplots, by rearranging functions between characters, and creating composite and collective characters that combine contradictory functions. The author transformed several folktales into a series of four novels about coming of age in the twenty-first-century United States. A detailed analysis of Meyer’s modifications of the folktale partially corroborates the feminist critique of Meyer’s representation of the protagonists as reinforced versions of cultural stereotypes and gender roles. However, some transformations, especially Meyer’s assignment of the hero-function to the female protagonist Bella, seem to suggest just the opposite, thus leading to the conclusion that the Twilight novels reflect the confusion caused by contradictory role-models and aspirations, the confusion that seems to be inherent in a coming-of-age novel.

Abstract:
Gothic monsters have recently experienced a period of focused scholarly analysis, although few studies have engaged with the werewolf in terms of its overt alignment with masculinity. Yet the werewolves of young adult fantasy fiction both support and subvert dominant masculine discourses through their complex negotiation with emotional repression and violence. These performative masculine practices are the focus of this article, which analyses how hegemonic masculine ideals are reinforced or rejected in a corpus of young adult fantasy texts, including Cassandra Clare's young adult series The Mortal Instruments (2007–2014) and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga (2005–2010). Both texts feature masculine characters whose lycanthropic experiences implicitly comment upon gender norms, which may shape young adult audiences' understanding of their own and others' gender identities.

Abstract:
Popular culture tourism destinations are made up of constructed realities transforming local communities into fictional servicescapes. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how the unpacking of a key concept (servicescape), applied to destination management, can support the transition to sustainable destination development in the face of popular culture tourism. The aim is to unpack the servicescape concept by exploring how it is constructed focusing on Twilight Saga representations and production processes at four destinations. The data consists of photographs and video clips of the servicescapes and interviews with key stakeholders. The findings support previous servicescape research dimensions and elements but also identify critical areas of power, control, and conflict when introducing a process approach to the servicescape concept. The study provides insights into the complex exchanges that take place in the development of servicescapes at popular culture tourism destinations. The study thereby contributes to an elaborated and holistic servicescape model, stressing the importance of strategic design and local stakeholders’ early involvement in the preproduction of popular culture tourism phenomena.

Abstract:
Abstract Mental disorders are common in modern times. It can be seen in the novel Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. It describes that the main character has a psychological problem. As a result of her failed expectations about her mother's figure, she experienced early trauma and disappointment, which culminated in mental changes that led to Borderline Personality Disorder. Two problems are proposed in this research; how does the absence of maternal care trigger mental disorders and the impact of Borderline Personality Disorder suffered by BellaSwan. This research uses the theory of Object Relations by Otto F. Kernberg. Two of Kernberg’s concepts are considered appropriate to be utilized: mother-daughter relationships and the concept of Borderline Personality Disorder. Those concepts help this research to describehow the absence of maternal care trigger mental disorder and the kind of Borderline Personality Disorder suffered by Bella Swan. The result of this research shows two main points. First, the absence of maternal care is the cause of the failure of character-forming and it led to Borderline Personality Disorder. Second, the impact is shown through her being unconfident and split up from the social.

Abstract:
This study explores the effectiveness of media literacy-based activities on writing proficiency and affective domains in the EFL setting. A quasi-experiment was conducted during the 2021 academic year with 148 college EFL students selected as participants from three classes from a private university in Seoul, South Korea. Participants were divided into three groups based on proficiency levels: upper proficiency, intermediate proficiency, and lower proficiency. The assigned activities included four steps: (1) watching video clips made by a teacher, (2) group discussion, (3) individual presentation, and (4) individual writing. For these activities, participants used multimedia like YouTube, Fanfiction.net, Reddit discussion boards, and blogs to understand the topic, evaluate the content, and express their thoughts. Popular franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Potterverse, and the Twilight saga provided material for the activities. The study’s results reveal that students significantly increased their writing skills, regardless of proficiency level. Moreover, the higher the linguistic ability, the more the writing ability improved. In a survey, students also showed significant changes in all affective domains (anxiety, interest, confidence, and engagement), except for the lower proficiency group’s confidence domain. The study presents a detailed summary of the activities and derives meaningful implications.

Abstract:
The nerds of 20th and 21st century global pop and visual culture have taken various forms over the decades. In a plethora of media - from video games to comic books to film - individuals associated with this subject position have typically been shown to be on the periphery of socio-spatially determined spaces of value. Through contemporary North American high school dramas, comedies, romances, and thrillers ranging from The Faculty (1998) to She’s All That (1999) to The Twilight Saga (2008-2012), these socio-spatial spaces of value are typically associated with social capital and popularity. Richard Kelly’s protagonist in his directorial debut Donnie Darko (2001) raises interesting questions concerning the relationship between the nerd, the outsider and the loner, and their relation to social and personal space. In socio-spatial terms, Donnie calls into question the value and power of socio-spatially determined zones of value if one sees such spaces and structures as valueless in principium. This paper conducts a close reading of Donnie Darko, beginning with the assumption that Donnie is a nerd and, parsing the character through the socio-spatial relations of a variety of adolescent subject positions, what Donnie Darko ultimately uncovers about identity, space, and value.

Abstract:
We all know vampires. Count Dracula and Nosferatu, maybe Blade and Angel, or Stephenie Meyer’s sparkling beau, Edward Cullen. In fact, the Euro-American vampire myth has long become one of the most reliable and bestselling fun-rides the entertainment industries around the world have to offer. Quite recently, however, a new type of fanged villain has entered the mainstream stage: the American Indian vampire. Fully equipped with war bonnets, buckskin clothes, and sharp teeth, the vampires of recent U.S. film productions, such as Blade, the Series or the Twilight Saga, employ both the Euro-American vampire trope and denigrating discourses of race and savagery. It is also against this backdrop that American Indian authors and filmmakers have set out to renegotiate not only U.S. America’s myth of the racially overdrawn “savage Indian,” but also the vampire trope per se. Drawing on American Indian myths and folklore that previous scholarship has placed into direct relationship to the Anglo-European vampire narrative, and on recent U.S. mainstream commodifications of these myths, my paper traces and contextualizes the two oppositional yet intimately linked narratives of American Indian vampirism ensuing today: the commodified image of the “Indian” vampire and the renegotiated vampire tropes created by American Indian authors and filmmakers.

Abstract:
Sailors are neither professional nor amateur astronomers, but people who have to observe the sky in the course of following their professional calling. As soon as sailors ventured far from the coast they required some guide and even in antiquity (as shown by mentions in Homer’s Odyssey and, considerably later, by Aratus) they used Ursa Minor and Ursa Major. With journeys farther afield, they gained some insight into latitude from the changes of the altitude of the circumpolar constellations above the horizon. Although the very last Viking voyagers knew of the magnetic compass, earlier ones still relied on the Sun and the stars. Describing the methods used, Harald Akerlund says “One saga mentions a man, Oddi Heldagon, who was known as “Oddi the Star” and who served as long-distance pilot for an Icelandic magnate towards the end of the 900s. He left notes that included a complete table of the changes in declination of the Sun throughout the year, expressed as the height of the Sun on the meridian in semi-diameters. There is also a small table of azimuths giving the direction at different times of the year, of dawn twilight, defined as being a faint band of light on the horizon, visible before sunrise. We know nothing of the instrument used to measure the altitude of the Sun.”

Abstract:
Abstract. Twilight gradients in the concentration of atmospheric species with short photochemical lifetimes influence the transmission data obtained in a solar occultation instrument, such as the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III aboard the International Space Station (SAGE III/ISS). These photochemically induced changes result in nonlinear asymmetries in the species distribution near the tangent altitude along the line of sight (LOS). The bias introduced by neglecting the effects of twilight variations in the retrieval of mesospheric ozone is the focus of this study. Ozone (O3) in the mesosphere exhibits large variations near the terminator during sunrise and sunset based on current understanding of the photochemistry of this altitude region. The algorithm used in the SAGE III/ISS standard retrieval procedure for mesospheric ozone does not include the effects of these gradients. This study illustrates a method for implementing a correction scheme to account for the twilight variations in mesospheric O3 and gives an estimate of the bias in the standard retrieval. We use the results from a diurnal photochemical model conducted at different altitudes to develop a database of ratios of mesospheric O3 at different solar zenith angles (SZA) around 90∘ to O3 at a SZA of 90∘ for both sunrise and sunset conditions. These ratios are used to scale the O3 at levels above the tangent altitude for appropriate SZA in the calculation of the optical depth along the LOS. In general, the impact of the corrections due to twilight variations is to increase the contribution of the overlying layers to the optical depth thereby reducing the retrieved O3 concentration at the tangent altitude. We find that at sunrise the retrieved mesospheric O3 including the diurnal corrections is lower by more than 30 % compared to the archived O3. We show the results obtained for different latitudes and seasons. In addition, for nearly collocated sunrise and sunset scans, we note that these corrections lead to better qualitative agreement in the sunrise to sunset O3 ratio with the photochemical model prediction.

Having seen one of Rackham’s illustrations to Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods in his youth, C.S. Lewis became instantly attracted to “pure ‘Northernness’”, a feature he would later associate with Scandinavian literature and mythology, Wagner’s music and William Morris’ romances. In a similar manner, Morris describes his reading of the Norse sagas as a momentous experience which influenced his later writings. However, the two authors seem to have responded to different aspects of the sagas: Morris to their realism of presentation and to their worship of courage, and Lewis to their use of magic and myth. Paradoxically, in spite of Morris’ paganism, his prose romances played an important part in Lewis’s conversion to Christianity.

Based on an eleventh-century dial fragment artefact, found at Uunartoq in Greenland, it is widely accepted that they sailed along chosen latitudes using primitive Sun compasses. Such instruments were tested on sea and proved to be efficient hand-held navigation tools, but the dimensions and incisions of the Uunartoq find are far from optimal in this role. On the basis of the sagas mentioning sunstones, incompatible hypotheses were formed for Viking solar navigation procedures and primitive skylight polarimetry with dichroic or birefringent crystals. We describe here a previously unconceived method of navigation based on the Uunartoq artefact functioning as a ‘twilight board’, which is a combination of a horizon board and a Sun compass optimized for use when the Sun is close to the horizon. We deduced an appropriate solar navigation procedure using a twilight board, a shadow-stick and birefringent crystals, which bring together earlier suggested methods in harmony and provide a true skylight compass function. This could have allowed Vikings to navigate around the clock, to use the artefact dial as a Sun compass during long parts of the day and to use skylight polarization patterns in the twilight period. In field tests, we found that true north could be appointed with such a medieval skylight compass with an error of about ±4° when the artificially occluded Sun had elevation angles between +10° and −8° relative to the horizon. Our interpretation allows us to assign exact dates to the gnomonic lines on the artefact and outlines the schedule of the merchant ships that sustained the Viking colony in Greenland a millennium ago.

Abstract:
Abstract. Long series of ozone profiles from 6 to 28 km at the Southern Tropics have been obtained from solar occultation measurements at twilight using a SAOZ spectrometer borne by long duration balloons. Two flights have been performed from Bauru in Brazil both in the summer, in February and March 2001 and 2003, from where the balloons are moving westward at almost constant latitude (20°±5° S). The flight in 2001 passed right over Reunion Island where the SAOZ measurements could be compared to those of both tropospheric and stratospheric ozone lidars. In the stratosphere, compared to that of SAOZ, the measurements of the SHADOZ ozonesondes network, and the HALOE and SAGE II instruments in orbit are found a little noisier (2–3% for SAGE II, 3–4% for HALOE, 4–5% for the sondes), and of insignificant or small high biased (SAGE II). No differences in altitude could be found between SAOZ and SAGE II at all levels, and HALOE above 22 km. But the ozonesondes appear to be systematically displaced upwards by some 400–700 m at all levels, and the HALOE profiles do show an increasing altitude bias at decreasing altitude below 22 km. In the upper troposphere, the SAOZ measurements are found consistent with those of the sondes at Reunion Island and high biased on average over the Western Pacific, at American Samoa and Fiji. Compared to SAOZ, SAGE II shows a 50–60% low bias similar to that already found with the ozonesondes, and a 2–2.5 times larger zonal variability, suggesting a degradation of its precision below the tropopause. Finally, the unrealistic large offsets and variability in the HALOE data compared to all others suggest that its measurements are no reliable in the tropical troposphere below 17 km.

Abstract:
The television series Royal Dreams directed by Grzegorz Warchoł was created in 1988. The script was written by Józef Hen who, a year later, published a novel under the same title based on the series. When telling about Władysław II Jagiełło, King of Poland in 1386–1434, Hen first of all presented a timeless, in his opinion, ethical and political ideal, in which power was based on ethics, authority and pragmatism. Based on a textual analysis, the article is aimed at reconstructing the abovementioned ideal and methods of creating it as well as ethical and historiosophical meanings related to it. In turn, a contextual analysis was used to interpret this ideal in the context of the situation in Poland in the late 1980s, when the serial and the novel came into being. Hen presents Jagiełło as a pragmatic ruler, though emphasizes that his greatness was also determined by his ethics, morality and authority originating not from the attributes of royal power, but from Jagiełło himself. He shows the importance of realizing the limitations of royal power. He also praises the king’s mature age because the wisdom and experience that age brings result in a way of seeing the world that is based on self-reflection, strengthens the attitude of a sage and forms part of the ruler’s image. However, one should remember that for Hen equally important as historical processes is the history of an individual presented against the background of the epoch, a specific microhistory. Thus, he presents Jagiełło not only as a historical and political figure, but in the context of a specific, really existing human fate. Hen was primarily concerned with revealing the truth about the character that fascinated him, but Royal Dreams can also be read in the context of the present times. By no means the thing is simple analogies, translating historical events into current ones or straightforwardly evaluating the political situation in the second half of the 1980s. Royal Dreams clearly expresses the sense of the coming of the time of the twilight of a certain epoch and the imminent birth of a new reality. However, the thing is not the prophetic dimension either, but the ethical and historiosophical one, to show the importance of a wise, responsible and strong leader in such an exceptional time. The title of the series and the novel can be read in two ways. This is not only about the king’s dreams about a strong state and his awareness of change, but also the dream about the king, “the dream of a citizen of contemporary Poland about a wise and just ruler” who will make right decisions, and his authority will make others obey him.

Abstract:
This research attempts to identify and classify violating and flouting of Quality maxim in the movie Twilight Saga. The data used were the characters' utterances containing of violating and flouting of the maxim along with their contexts. The findings show that violating is the mostly used strategy (25 cases). It is followed by flouting which is done in various ways: saying something which does not represent what the speaker thinks (8 cases), exaggerating (1 case), using irony (1 case), and bantering (3 cases). Flouting the maxim of Quality by using metaphor is not found, indicating that metaphor may be considered as an ineffective way to deliver a message implicitly.

Abstract:
PurposeThe visitor economy of Forks now clearly relies upon a niche form of tourism – as fans of The Twilight Saga are drawn to the setting and filming location of the films. The purpose of this study is to consider the process of diversification and subsequently present recommendations that could inform a future diversification strategy for Forks, in preparation for a post-film tourism scenario.Design/methodology/approachThe research methods employed in this study have two interlinked but distinct elements. Firstly, the Twilight Effect in Forks (WA, USA) is considered as an illustrative case study to shed light on the issues facing a destination that has seen a tourism boom as a direct result of popular culture – The Twilight Saga Franchise. Secondly, a scenario thinking and planning approach is applied when considering the “long-view” future of tourism in Forks.FindingsThis article presents a post-film tourism future scenario for Forks; it suggests tourism diversification and a shift towards cultural heritage and wellness. Forks is well placed to afford such tourism experiences, as it offers unique cultural and natural characteristics; furthermore, these could be utilised to create and maintain a distinctive destination image. In doing so a more socially and environmentally sustainable industry can be established, one which supports the local community, including the Quileute tribe.Originality/valueThe article offers original discussions within the film-tourism literature with novel approaches to understanding the management and pre-planning opportunities for destinations that have become popular film tourism locations, with the application of a “Tourism Diversification Model”. The model is adapted from Ansoff Matrix and can be applied as a framework in future studies exploring destination diversification. The investigation of Forks as a post-film tourism case study alone is unique, and the discussions and findings presented are original.

Abstract:
The Internet has facilitated the coming together of formerly more separated youth taste cultures, such that literary, screen and graphic fandoms now more readily overlap. Media industries have invested in online strategies which create an ongoing relationship between producers and consumers of entertainment media texts. Using the Internet marketing campaign for Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga as a case study, the paper examines the role of the publishing industry in marketing popular teen literary fiction through online channels in ways that often disguise promotional intent.

Abstract:
This article uses a queer, critical disability studies framework to examine a diverse set of films in which one lover literally changes bodies to be like the other lover, such as in The Little Mermaid (1989), Avatar (2009), and the Twilight saga. The author argues that these films, what she calls "fantastic unlikely couple films," represent the values of companionate love, a relationship form that emphasizes similarity as the key to successful long-term relationships. Significantly, the values of companionate love are aligned with the (neo)liberal state. In the films analyzed, the physically transformed partner is also the weaker, more dependent partner. The shift to a more capable body—one similar to the body of the other partner—not only means that the couple will be more equal companions; it also means that the pair can now fulfill their destiny as productive workers and reproductive parents, independent of state subsidies and assistance.
