Abstract:
In the paper steadiness of the compressed and twisted drill rod is examined. The rod is presented in the form of a circular cylindrical shell, which is circulated from the outer side by a supersonic stream of gas. The rod is affected by the uniformly distributed on its length axial force and the torque. The problem of stability is solved by means of reviewing of a small deviation from the periodic solution of the problem. Boundaries of instability zones of the mechanical system are defined with application of the method of harmonic balance.

Alpha-synucleinopathies are featured by fibrillar inclusions in brain cells. Although α-synuclein fibrils display structural diversity, the origin of this diversity is not fully understood. We used molecular dynamics simulations to design synthetic peptides, based on the NAC 71-82 amino acid fragment of α-synuclein, that govern protofilament contacts and generation of twisted fibrillar polymorphs. Four peptides with structures based on either single or double fragments and capped or non-capped ends were selected for further analysis. We determined the fibrillar yield and the structures from th

The paper presents a comparative theoretical analysis of the movements of the curved rods of various curvature forms, which can be applied as tools for ultrasonic treatment of holes in fragile materials. It has been shown that the traditional processing of holes by an ultrasonic method is based on the use of straight rods, in which the amplitudes of displacements on the working – free end corresponds to the value of displacements at the point of its attachment to the ultrasonic oscillation concentrator. However, the twisted tube is one of heat transfer rate enhancement methods. Also, the turbulent flows are often used instead of laminar for enhancement heat transfer rate. Therefore, the tube arrangement can be used in a suitable way for utilized this purpose. The shape features of tubes in the heat exchangers are very important for enhancing their performance. The paper discusses the new design of a round pile with a relatively smoother surface, developed in an attempt to eliminate excessive negative friction forces. A theoretical study has been conducted into the performance of asbestos-cement shell pile exposed to off-center loading, which occurs in response to uneven deformations in the surrounding soil and seismic loads. The cross section of the upper eccentrically compressed part of a flexible asbestos-cement-pipe-concrete pile element is considered. In this study, a polymerized twisted nematic (TN) network was used as an extrinsic chiral platform to overcome the heterogeneity during spontaneous symmetry breaking in a mixed system comprising an achiral bent-core molecule and rod-like mesogen. The TN platform was prepared by photopolymerizing a reactive mesogen dispersed in a low molecular weight liquid crystal with TN orientation. The use of TN orientation to correct the degeneracy in bent-core molecular systems has been previously reported; however, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that uses an extrinsic chiral platfo

AbstractCibacron brilliant red 3B-A (CBR) has been introduced to determine chitosan (CS) concentrations in solution, and several studies applied it to measure chitosan content in pharmaceutical formulations. So far, studies have relied on the absorbance band shift to 570 nm to determine the extent of the CBR – CS interaction. In this study, we show that CBR forms micro- to nanometer sized aggregates with CS, depending on their charge ratio and that other photophysical changes in CBR are induced by this interaction. We found that, besides the bathochromic band shift, aggregation induces emissio

DNA is a life-sustaining molecule that enables the storage and retrieval of genetic information. In its role during essential cellular processes, this long flexible molecule is significantly bent and twisted. Previously, we developed an elasto-dynamic rod approximation to study DNA deformed into a loop by a gene regulatory protein (lac repressor) and predicted the energetics and topology of the loops. Although adequate for DNA looping, our model neglected electrostatic interactions which are essential when considering processes that result in highly super-coiled DNA including plectonemes. Here

The twisting of flat bars to create the shape of an auger has been used by blacksmiths for many centuries. Easily recognizable examples of such work include twisted square rods used in wrought iron gates, and hand crafted twist drills. To this day, a large variety of long drills used in the mining industry are created by twisting flat bars of appropriate cross-section. In all of these examples, the edges of the material form a helical pattern which may be characterized by the diameter to pitch ratio. In practice, a pitch ratio of unity is typical, as this ensures sufficient axial motion of mat
