Abstract:
Like a number of other stories of Dubliners,Two Gallants because of it coded polyphony is debatable on the level of significance. It seems that the story strategically convey some crucial information to the reader by deciphering its symbolic codes. Accordingly, this study in accord with Roland Barthes semiology and specified codes in S/Z makes an attempt to explicate the symbolic codes and structural components that carry an invisible message of James Joycs Two Gallants.

Abstract:
While finding out the relation of W. Trevor’s writing to Joyce, we are to take into account the fact, fixed by the German writer H. Bell in his “Irish diary”: Joyce is one of the ordinary surnames in Ireland. Yet the aim of the article was to search for the influence of the literary technique of J. Joyce — one of the well-known modernists — on W. Trevor’s creative works. On the one hand, W. Trevor himself in the interviews insisted that “Dubliners” and “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” were valuable for him within the whole life; on the other hand, the known and famous writers and critics aimed at finding those links. A number of researchers took into account that Joyce’s later texts were not so valuable for Trevor’s creative works. His influence was not the linguistic pyrotechnics of the “Ulysses” but the modest and punctilious voice of “Dubliners”. It is possible to determine some levels of Joyce’s presence in W. Trevor’s texts: Joyce as a character, as a model of creative activity, as a pattern for stylization and even comic imitation. One of the characters of Trevor’s “Music” was fascinated with Joyce’s appearance, his photograph. Sometimes, while hearing music, he was imagining himself a human being similar to Joyce. “The Third Party” began with a meeting of two men, one the husband, one the lover in a Dublin hotel bar. They have to come to an agreement on the end of the marriage, which was not achieved. The plot of this story is somewhat a travesty of “A Little Cloud” (from “Dubliners”). Moreover, the main characters are W. Trevor’s version of two different types of mental constitution vivid in “A Little Cloud” as well as in “Ulysses”. The interview of two characters in Trevor’s text allowed using Joyce’s telling strategy: an application of subjective third-person narration. An aspect of location in Trevor’s story is similar to that of Joyce, it is Dublin. Nevertheless for Trevor Dublin was a city, where events took place, not a version of the important original location, as it was with Joyce. The same may be said about “Two More Gallants”. Th is story of the modern and equally traditional Irish writer is the most vivid example of the author’s dialogue with the original text of Joyce. Th e writer simultaneously reflected and parodied “Two Gallants” (from “Dubliners”). There is a certain similarity between the viewpoints of both authors on Dublin and Ireland in general. The creative activity of Joyce was governed by Ireland. W. Trevor’s links with Ireland were restored only when he became something of a stranger to this country. Moreover, Trevor’s conception of Ireland remained constant as if nothing had happened in this country during the second half of the XX century. So the reality of “Two Gallants” and “Two More Gallants” remained alike, as well as irresponsibility of the main characters. The narrative nerve in Joyce’s text may be defi ned as no-event, while Trevor’s text is arranged according to tale tradition. “Two Gallants” is associated with the concentrated poetic image of paralysis. A similar representation is evident in “Two More Gallants”: puppets dance to the music of original sins. Th at shows Trevor’s play with the original text.

Abstract:
"Scam King" is a full-length feature screenplay and follows standard script format. The idea behind "Scam King" came originally from the James Joyce short story "Two Gallants" in Dubliners. "Scam King" is, however, not an adaption of Joyce's story, but rather was inspired by the gaps in his story pertaining to the characters' way of life on the street.

Abstract:
My dissertation challenges the longstanding dismissal of love in James Joyce's texts by examining the ethical and political implications of his love stories. Primarily using Martin Buber's works (but also including perspectives derived from bell hooks and Julia Kristeva), I define love as an affirmation of otherness and adopt a critical framework that promotes the love of others over the narcissistic devotion to oneself. In so doing, I highlight love as the ultimate challenge to authoritarian systems because the embrace of the other is necessary to transcend the boundaries that alienate individuals from each other and that justify imperialist and racist political structures. I thus offer a love ethic that not only compels meaningful individual interaction, but also establishes a model for effective social and civic participation, encouraging a climate of cooperation that embraces the solidarity and empathy needed for progressive politics. I also argue that analyzing Joyce's works provides a fruitful opportunity to recognize the individual and political viability of this love ethic. Focusing on Dubliners, Stephen Hero, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, and Ulysses, I examine the relationships between his characters' pursuits of love and their socio-political struggles, arguing that their love for others directly influences their acceptance of otherness within the colonialist discourses of Joyce's Dublin. For example, James Duffy's refusal of Emily Sinico in "A Painful Case" also rejects her advice to engage in the political cooperation that would promote his socialist ideas. Similarly, Stephen Dedalus's promotion of symbolic romance over real-world attachments focuses his aesthetics on ideal beauty instead of everyday Dublin, which alienates him from his audience and limits the practical success of his art. By contrast, Leopold Bloom's love for his wife Molly reflects a broader empathy for others that encourages social dialogue and counteracts what Joyce called "the old pap of racial hatred," an element in both British imperialism and Irish nationalism. My dissertation's afterword anticipates the amorous potential of Finnegans Wake, reading ALP's concluding soliloquy as a demonstration of her enduring affection for HCE that is reignited through each iteration of the text's cyclical narrative.

Full text
Abstract:
Strontium- and magnesium-doped lanthanum gallate (LSGM) due to its high ionic conductivity and chemical stability over a wide range of oxygen partial pressures and temperatures has been considered as an alternative electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems. Mechanical properties of LSGM electrolyte layer however need to be well studied. An overview of mechanical behavior of LSGM on an all-perovskite SOFC is presented in this work. Dense La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.7Mg0.3O2.8 electrolyte pellets were studied. Mechanical properties, such as hardness, elastic modulus, fracture toughness, and modulus of rupture (MOR) of the electrolyte pellets at different sintering temperatures were measured and correlated with the SEM morphological characterization. Samples sintered for 2h at 1500°C demonstrated slightly enhanced mechanical properties than those sintered at 1450°C and 1400°C.

Full text
Abstract:
In addition to the high conversion efficiency, the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is quite attractive from the viewpoint of fuel flexibility, especially the possibility of internal reforming of methane and other hydrocarbons for power generation. The systems with several kW to tens kW-class modules have been successfully operated and tested in Japan. The SOFC systems with internal steam reforming reaction over a Ni-YSZ anode or pressurized condition have been tested as a suitable operation mode. Methane internal reforming proceeded without deterioration with time, whereas the power generation with ethane and ethylene suffered from carbon deposition even at high steam-to-carbon ratio. Carbon deposition region and equilibrium partial pressure of oxygen in the C-H-O diagram were estimated from the thermodynamic data. Reduced temperature SOFC operation is another approach, especially for small scale applications, in which scandia-stabilized zirconia, lanthanum gallate, or rare earth-doped ceria were employed as candidate for the electrolyte.

Abstract:
When a mechanical component present cracks, the determination of the critical size of these cracks, as well as their speed of growth, it is essential in order to assure a reliable operation of the component. The correct estimate of the growth of the crack permit the taking of technical decisions related with the rehabilitation or opportune substitution before a catastrophic failure. Exist several manuals of cracks [1,2] with analytic solutions in order to determine the stress intensity factor of very diverse geometric configurations of cracks and of types of stress. However, most of manual statements consider the cracks in an infinite body or on the surface. In the case of cracks of turbine rotors, they are located near the surface of the central bore, for what they could not be tried neither like superficial cracks neither like cracks buried in an infinite body. In this paper, they come the results of the numeric models of elliptic and tunnel buried cracks near to the surface applying the Finite Element Method. They were carried out several FEM models considering several ligaments between the tip of the crack and the surface. The results of finite element were normalized for later one stablish a polynomial that corresponds to the factor of geometric correction “F” for elliptic cracks buried near the surface. The results obtained with our expression to elliptic cracks, they are compared with the results of Saxena, obtaining a good agreement to the analysis of the grown of the crack of the Gallantin rotor.
