Abstract:
This paper reports a study of the relationships between shared and separate living arrangements and the life satisfaction of two generations of migrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel, adult children (the younger generation) and their elderly parents. An attempt was made to identify the social, familial and personal factors that affect life satisfaction, and special attention was devoted to inter-generational family solidarity and to informal and formal social support. Data were collected from a stratified random sample of 425 respondents – 248 in the older generation and 177 in the younger. The results show that for both generations, contrary to expectations, life satisfaction was higher when the two generations lived in separate rather than shared households. Affectual solidarity was positively associated with life satisfaction for both generations, but functional solidarity for the older generation only. Among the older generation, the subjective evaluation of health contributed most to the explained variance; while among the younger, standard of living and employment contributed most. For both generations, family solidarity and social support had little impact. The findings are discussed in relation to the structural and economic factors that influence co-residence and which differentially affect the two generations.

Abstract:
A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample ( N = 3,093) of Finnish and Italian registered nurses to identify differences related to generation, country, gender, and educational level in their perceptions and opinions about workplace-related dimensions of nursing and their managers’ leadership practices. The Multidimensional Nursing Generations Questionnaire (MNGQ) and two subscales of the Transformational Leadership Scale (TLS), “Feedback and Rewards” and “Professional Development,” were used as survey tools. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistically significant ( p < .05) generational and country differences emerged in the MNGQ components “Conflicts between generations,” “Patient safety view,” “Relationships between generations,” “Working as a multigenerational team,” “Orientation to change,” “Intention to leave,” and “Flexibility and availability.” Generational and country differences also emerged for the two TLS subscales. Generational differences existed between registered nurses of different generations and countries, and should be considered in leading multigenerational nurses’ workforces.

Abstract:
By analyzing survey data collected from 2,002 participants in 5 generational cohorts in the United States, this study examines generational differences in information and communication technology (ICT) and social media use behaviors. The intersection between digital divide theory and generational cohort theory provides the theoretical foundation for this study. There are two major findings. First, there are significant differences in ICT use among 5 different generations (Generation Z, Generation Y, Generation X, Boomers, Silent Generation). In terms of ICT access and use, the silent generation is left behind other generations. Thus, the grey divide still exists. Second, different generations have different preferences for social media platforms. For example, more Generation Z participants use Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram. This study brings additional insights into generational differences/divide in ICT and social media use. Practical suggestions are provided to narrow the generational divide and to foster communicative resilience among different generations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
This study assessed generational differences in human values as measured by the Schwartz Value Survey. It was proposed that the two most recent generations, Millennials and Generation Xers, would value Sell-enhancement and Openness to Change more than the two older generations, Baby Boomers and Matures, while the two older generations would value Self-transcendence and Conservation more. The hypotheses were tested with a combined sample of Canadian knowledge workers and undergraduate business students ( N = 1,194). Two hypotheses were largely supported, although an unexpectedly large difference was observed between Millennials and Generation Xers with respect to Openness to Change and Self-enhancement. The findings suggest that generation is a useful variable in examining differences in social values.

Abstract:
The ease of information related to a cosmetic product through electronic word of mouth and financial literacy owned by millennial and Z generations can trigger purchasing decisions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of financial literacy and electronic word of mouth on purchasing decisions in millennial and Z generations. The study used an explanatory research study design and voluntary sampling technique with a total of 122 millennial and Z generation respondents in Indonesia. Based on the results of the research, both generations have financial knowledge and financial attitudes in the low category, and the millennial generation's financial behavior are in the high category and generation Z is in the medium category. The electronic word of mouth variable is in the low category and generation Z's purchasing decisions are in the medium to high category and the millennial generation are in the medium category. Regression test shows that the education, financial literacy have a significant negative effect on purchasing decisions, while electronic word of mouth has a significant positive effect on purchasing decisions. The government and related stakeholders need to provide education related to financial literacy and sort out the right information about a product.

One cycle of direct Pedigree selection was performed with selection intensity 5 % to improve productivity with accepTable fiber quality of the two Egyptian cotton ( G. barbadense L.) cross combinations. Comparing mean performance of F2 with those of F3 generation revealed increased mean values for all traits with advanced generations from F2 to F3, indicating accumulation of increasing alleles. The phenotypic variance for all traits was highly significant through F2 and F3 generations. Heritability estimates in broad sense improved considerably for all traits from F2 to advanced F3 generations. The genotypic correlation between three earliness characters was highly significant negative with most yield traits in F2 pop. I. While genotypic correlation between the previous earliness traits with yield traits in F3 generation was positively non-significant except for lint percentage that was highly significant positive. Genotypic correlation was highly significant positive among most yield and yield component traits in both generations, which helps pedigree selection to achieve high fast genetic advance. The data of the genotypic correlation among studied characters in F2 and F3 generations in population II showed highly significant negative genotypic correlation between earliness traits in F2 generation, changed to highly significant positive in F3 generation after applying pedigree selection. The genotypic correlation between most yield characters and fiber properties showed highly significant positive correlation in population II in both generations. The superior ten families in F3 generation in both populations ranked on high yield, yield components and fiber quality showed higher means than that of F2, F3, better parent and check in most yield characters

Taqi, Hanan. "Two ethnicities, three generations : phonological variation and change in Kuwait." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/730.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates accent variation in the speech of three generations of two Kuwaiti ethnic groups: Najdis (originally from Saudi Arabia) and Ajamis (originally from Iran). The ethnic groups were chosen due to their varying social status: the Najdis have held a prestigious status in Kuwait for historical reasons, while Ajamis have held the least prestigious status on the social scale. The two groups have over the years gradually come into contact with each other, and this study explores the outcome of dialect contact by focusing on a set of phonological variables which traditionally had accent-specific realisations. The phonological variables (ʤ) (typically realised by Najdis as [j] and by Ajamis as [ʤ]), (s) (realised by Najdis as [s] more often than Ajamis, who use [sʕ] in exclusive co-articulatory environments) and (Ɣ) (realised by Najdis as [q] and by Ajamis as [Ɣ]) were investigated. These variables were analysed in relation to the social variables (of ethnicity, age and gender). Social networks and the correlation between identity and dialect levelling were also considered. Data were collected from 48 Kuwaiti speakers representing the two ethnicities, three ages groups (chosen according to relevant milestones in the history of Kuwait), and a balanced number of males and females. A variety of techniques (picture-naming, map task, interview, and questionnaires) were used to collect data. Results show that the Najdi accent is generally more stable across generations than the Ajamis’. The Ajami accent seems to be moving towards the Najdis’. The accent of the old generation of Ajamis resembles the Najdi accent the least, while the young generation of Ajamis use Najdi variants the most. The female Ajamis are the forefront of this change, followed by young Ajami males. (ʤ) and (s) showed change the most across the Ajami generations, with the young speakers actively avoiding the original Ajami realisations due to their social connotations. Language and linguistic differences used to be the largest barrier against welcoming Ajamis to the Kuwaiti community; the reported accent transformation seems to be playing a major role in bringing the two ethnic groups closer to each other.

De, Luca Nicole <1996&gt. "Offensive Advertising with sexist appeal: an analysis between two generations." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/17515.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s consumers are constantly bombarded with advertising messages of all types, like tv commercials, newsletters, printed ads, display advertisements and many others, through multiple media channels. Given all the information to which consumers are exposed, it frequently happens that they do not pay much attention to ads, making the job of advertisers much harder. Many advertisements today are designed to “cut through the clutter”, in order to distinguish themselves from the others. Often advertisers do so by using controversial advertising to arouse discussion among consumers and the audience exposed to it. Controversial adverting though has a twofold effect, it can elicit positive reactions, but can also lead to negative ones when it becomes offensive. This thesis aims to investigate the effects of offensive advertising with sexist appeal among women. In particular the analysis concerns the attitudes of women belonging to two different generations to see weather age is a factor which affects how potentially offensive advertisements impact women’s attitudes towards the ads, the brand and if this has an effect on their purchase behaviour.

Franklin-Brown, G. "Two generations of Black Caribbean women's experiences of the education system." Thesis, London South Bank University, 2013. http://researchopen.lsbu.ac.uk/2089/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the generational differences between the first generation of British born females of Caribbean descent who attended school in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and 1970s and their daughters. Through the exploration of these two generations' experiences of school the research examined the similar trends and gained an understanding of the difficulties that they encountered and cited as barriers to their education. It explored the worries and anxieties of first generation mothers, and the measures they applied to improve the educational experiences of their daughters. It is qualitative research of twenty-six Black Caribbean women in London and Oxford. Access to participants was gained using the snowballing method and semi-structured interviews were used to trace the discussions about the educational experiences across the two generations. Documentary sources such as government reports and other research provided the historical perspective and contextual background to the study. When these historical documents were analysed they showed there was on-going political tension around educational issues. The main contention of the early immigrants of the 1960s was educational inequality which resulted in a disproportionate number of West Indian children in educationally subnormal schools. The study analyses some areas which were of concern to the mothers in respect to their dissatisfaction with their children's schooling. It showed that some first generation mothers felt that they received very little support from their parents in school. Immigrant parents were unaware that they were expected to participate in the education of their children. However, unlike their parents, mothers in this study used their experiences of education and applied various measures in an attempt to support the academic performance of their children. This is in contrast to some of the stereotypes of indifference, disengagement and detachment of Black Caribbean parents. There is constant comparative analysis between the mothers' and daughters' experiences. The results showed that both mothers and daughters were affected by teachers' perception, and low academic expectation. The study also highlights their perception of discrimination, isolation, exclusion and prejudicial practices. It seems that the education system through its operations and practices have maintained a structure that undermines self-confidence and performance of some Caribbean students. It was concluded that when mothers and daughters experiences of school were compared that many similarities existed. There was increased access in the education system that resulted in the availability of opportunities to further and higher education. However many issues still exist that prevents greater equality in the British education system.

Abraham, Sarah. "Preterm birth has impact on the long term health of two generations." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/5611.

Full text
Abstract:
Whole document restricted until June 2011, see Access Instructions file below for details of how to access the print copy.<br>Research over the last decade has provided clear evidence that children and young adults born very preterm have reduced insulin sensitivity. There is very little data on the metabolic changes, changes in body composition and blood pressure beyond young adulthood in preterm survivors, particularly those born moderately preterm, who constitute the vast majority of preterm survivors. To date the impact of parent’s prematurity on the health of their children has not been assessed. This thesis reports glucose metabolism, body composition and blood pressure profile of a cohort of 52 adults (31 preterm, 21 term at mean GA of 33.3 and 39.8 weeks respectively) aged between 34-38 years and their 61 healthy, pre-pubertal, term born offspring (37 of preterm parents, 24 of term parents) aged 5-10 years. The adult cohort, both preterm and term born, were a subgroup of a much larger cohort involved in two previous studies- the Auckland Steroid Trial and The Steroid Follow-up study. Insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity were assessed using hyperglycaemic clamp in adults and frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test in the offspring. Both the adults and their offspring had their body composition assessed using DXA scan and blood pressure measured using 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. In the Adult study, compared to those born at term, those born preterm had ~50% reduction in insulin sensitivity, but had appropriate compensatory hyperinsulinaemia. The preterm subjects, especially men, also had increased total and abdominal adiposity. Although the mean blood pressure between the two groups was similar, preterm subjects had greater variability of blood pressure profile. In the Offspring study, the offspring of preterm parents had similar insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion as the offspring of term parents but had increased total and abdominal adiposity. Although the mean blood pressure in both the offspring groups was similar, comparison with an international reference data showed subtle changes in blood pressure in the offspring of preterm parents. This study has confirmed and extended previous observations on preterm survivors. Reduction in insulin sensitivity occurs even in those with moderate prematurity (33 to 37 weeks) and this finding extends the potential group at risk of insulin resistance to up to 7% of the population. Our findings of increased adiposity and blood pressure changes suggest an increased risk of later adult diseases in those born preterm. This is the first study assessing the health of children born to preterm parents. We speculate that the increased adiposity observed in the offspring of preterm parents may reflect transmission of an epigenetically modified phenotype from their preterm parent. In conclusion, preterm birth has effects over at least 2 generations and the public health impact of prematurity may be larger than previously thought.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have examined and predicted the usage of e-commerce Web sites using the Technology Acceptance Model and its primary constructs of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Smith (2008) conducted an empirical study of four e-commerce Web sites with participation from a unique and often understudied segment of the population - the senior generation. In addition, he called for additional research on the same e-commerce Web sites with participants from today's student population, a generation that has grown up with computers and the Internet. During the Spring 2008 semester, the authors duplicated Smith's research and conducted a field experiment with a purposeful sample of students enrolled in four courses in the School of Information Technology at Macon State College. Consistent with the conclusion by Smith, of significant worth is the test of the robustness of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) when applied to e-commerce adoption by both the senior generation and the net generation. The model’s predictive and explanatory capabilities still hold true. This is the only study we know of that compares two generations and their perceptions of e-commerce Web sites.

Abstract:
This document describes recent demographic, economic, and social trends of people 50 and older in Latin America. We analyze the labor profile of those generations who will face retirement over the next two decades to understand how likely it is to reduce the current gaps in coverage and sustainability of pensions. We explore the occupation profiles, contributions to social security, and their comparisons with previous generations. The document's last section describes different inequality angles for this population, including income and access to public services.

Full text
Abstract:
A total of 195 microsatellites were added to the chicken genome map. Mapping of fifty known genes revealed a high degree of conserved linkage order between human and chicken genomes. A new, statistically powerful mapping design, the full-sib intercross line (produced by mating two parents, and intercrossing their progeny over a number of generations), was developed for use in species with high reproductive capacity. The Jerusalem Resource Population (JRP), now at the F12 generation, was established to implement this design i chickens. The biometrical picutre in the JRP is similar to that generally found in chicken populations; inbreeding effects were not observed. The F2 and F3 generations of the JRP were genotyped with respect to twelve production traits, using a battery of 23 microsatellites markers. The number of significant effects was twice that expected on chance alone, validating the high statistical power of the JRP with respect to QTL differentiating the parental lines. Selective DNA pooling, based on estimation of marker allele frequencies in pooled DNA samples, has been proposed to reduce high genotyping costs of QTL mapping. A method to correct for overlapping shadow bands of dinucleotide microsatellite markers in pooled DNA samples was developed and validated. In a retrospective study using this procedure, previously mapped loci affecting Marek's disease were successfully identified.

Jung, Carina, Matthew Carr, Denise Lindsay, Eric Fleischman, and Chandler Roesch. Microbiome perturbations during domestication of the green June beetle (Cotinis nitida). Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43342.

Abstract:
Animal-associated microbiomes are critical to the well-being and proper functioning of the animal host, but only limited studies have examined in-sect microbiomes across different developmental stages. These studies revealed large shifts in microbiome communities, often because of significant shifts in diet during insects’ life cycle. Establishing insect colonies as model laboratory organisms and understanding how to properly feed and care for animals with complex and dynamic life cycles requires improved data. This study examined laboratory raised green June beetles (Cotinis nitida) captured from the field upon emergence from pupae. Starting with wild-caught adults, two generations of beetles were reared in the laboratory, ending with an entirely laboratory raised generation of larvae. The study compared the microbiomes of each generation and the microbiomes of larvae to adults. This study suggests that a diet of commercial, washed fruit for adults and commercial, packaged, organic alfalfa meal for larvae resulted in depauperate gut microbiome communities. Fermentative yeasts were completely absent in the laboratory-raised adults, and major bacterial population shifts occurred from one generation to the next, coupled with high morbidity and mortality in the laboratory-raised generation. Providing laboratory-raised beetles fresh-collected fruit and the larvae field-harvested detritus may therefore vastly improve their health and survival.

Mahdi, Juwan, and Yarjanik Kerob. The Language of the Armenian Ethno-Linguistic Subgroup in Kurdistan Region of Iraq from the Last Generation to Today. Institute of Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2023.003.

Full text
Abstract:
This topic is significant because it considers the language of an ethno-religious group, the Armenian people, in Iraq with non-Arab or Kurdish origins. The Armenian people did not originate from Iraq but from Armenia, one of the smaller countries in the former Soviet Union. Many Armenians were forced to migrate in 1915 to different countries in the Middle East due to ethnic cleansing under the Ottomans. This study explores the different methods by which the Armenian community has maintained its native Armenian language during its history in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). To this end, the study includes a comparison of how the language was viewed and maintained across two successive generations of Armenians in KRI. The findings show that the first generation is divided into those who speak Armenian and those who assimilated and speak Kurdish. Those who no longer speak Armenian prioritised integration and moved away from their mother tongue. This posed a threat to the ongoing maintenance of the language in these communities. However, the younger generation has worked to revive its mother tongue by learning it in schools established in the region approximately 20 years ago.

Abstract:
How strong is the transmission of socio-economic status across generations in Latin America? To answer this question, we first review the empirical literature on intergenerational mobility and inequality of opportunity for the region, summarizing results for both income and educational outcomes. We find that, whereas the income mobility literature is hampered by a paucity of representative datasets containing linked information on parents and children, the inequality of opportunity approach which relies on other inherited and pre-determined circumstance variables has suffered from arbitrariness in the choice of population partitions. Two new data-driven approaches one aligned with the ex-ante and the other with the ex-post conception of inequality of opportunity are introduced to address this shortcoming. They yield a set of new inequality of opportunity estimates for twenty-seven surveys covering nine Latin American countries over various years between 2000 and 2015. In most cases, more than half of the current generations inequality is inherited from the past with a range between 44% and 63%. We argue that on balance, given the parsimony of the population partitions, these are still likely to be underestimates.

Abstract:
This document discusses the theme of second generations of immigrant origin. First, we reflect on the “second generation” concept itself before moving on to a contextualisation of second generations in international, Spanish and Canarian migration studies. We then present a brief characterisation of one part of the second generations in the Canary Islands, and we consider the most relevant social issues involved in this reality. We end by outlining some brief conclusions

Semotiuk, Orest. RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN MILITARY CONFLICT: TERMINOLOGICAL AND DISCURSIVE DIMENSIONS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11399.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper is devoted to terminological, typological and discursive dimension of concepts describing modern conflicts. Historical development of concept “war” is retraced including four generations of warfare. Difficulties in establishing a methodological framework for analyzing the media coverage of military conflicts are analyzed and an interdisciplinary approach to the media coverage of military conflicts is proposed. This enables the integration of different theories - international relations, conflict studies, political communication and journalism. Two dimensions of the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict (physical and discursive) are desribed. In the physical dimension, the conflict is localized. The discursive dimension of the conflict is implemented at the global, interstate (Russian-Ukrainian) and local (intra-Ukrainian) levels. Discursive understanding of the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict was investigated on local level. The object of analysis was coverage of the conflict in 4 Ukrainian online news portals. The need of new methodological approaches to analysis of the relationship between the media and security issues is emphasized.
