Abstract:
Chapter 7 discusses comparing two groups, and covers graphical presentation of continuous unpaired data, the two-sample t test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. It describes the use of data transformations and how results are interpreted. It shows how to compare two proportions using the chi-squared test and how to report results as differences in proportions, relative risks, and odds ratios. It includes how to calculate 95% confidence intervals for estimates. Finally, the chapter discusses the reasons for and consequences of dichotomization of continuous data and a method for dichotomization with

Abstract:
Chapter 18 “Analysis of bulk samples” deals with the particular case of biodiversity surveys based on bulk samples. A bulk sample is an environmental sample containing mainly organisms from the taxonomic group under study, such as insect samples obtained from a Malaise trap, or eukaryote-enriched samples obtained from filtered or size-fractionated water samples. One important characteristic of bulk samples is that they usually provide good-quality DNA in high amounts. Chapter 18 presents several seminal studies based on bulk samples that aimed at monitoring arthropod, nematode, or marine metaz

Abstract:
This chapter reviews studies that have been conducted to determine the age at onset and course of illness of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Age at onset has been examined in two large samples, and the mean age at onset was the same in both studies (16.7 years). About two thirds of people had onset of BDD before age 18. There were more similarities than differences between the early-onset group (before age 18) and the later-onset group, although the early-onset group had a higher prevalence of attempted suicide than the late-onset group in both samples. The clinical course of BDD is often chro

This chapter outlines recent developments in understanding how psychological factors contribute to medical disorders. Individuals arrive at meaning through conversation. Scholars have long explored political conversations in the United States, and the vast majority of this research suggests that political discussion has important effects on political attitudes and engagement. However, much of this research relies on samples of White respondents, making it potentially difficult to generalize these findings to our increasingly diverse electorate. In this book, we seek to understand how political discussion networks vary across groups who have vastly different social positions in the United States, specifically
