AbstractThe phenomena of comet groups, i.e. sets of comets that exhibit similarity in their orbital elements, is investigated. A computer program based on the D-criterion of orbital similarity is used to search for comet pairs and groups. The reality of the groups is tested by making computer searches in random samples of comet orbits. The data base for the study is 599 long-period comet orbits. The degree of orbital similarity within a comet group was first assumed to be identical to that encountered in meteor streams. The computer search at this level produced five comet pairs plus two groups

Abstract:
Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) may be classified according to D-type cyclin dysregulation. Amongst nonhyperdiploid cases, those with IgH translocations t(4;14) or t(14;16) express high levels of cyclin D2, and those with t(11;14) express elevated cyclin D1. Although translocation-based subgroups may behave differently, cyclin D2 dysregulated disease tends to progress with more proliferative disease and poorer outcomes compared to cyclin D1. The importance of methylation status has been described in MM, with the transition from MGUS to symptomatic MM characterised by global hypomethylation, and

A total of 673 samples from cattle and 266 from tsetse flies in the study area located near the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve were analysed. Both Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax were found as single or mixed infections in cattle and tsetse flies. Moreover, the T. congolense in the infections were found to comprise 2 genotypic groups: the Savannah-type and the Kilifi-type, which were present either as single or mixed i

Summary Helicotylenchus microlobus is considered to be a junior synonym of H. pseudorobustus by several authors while others consider it as valid. To clarify the status of both species, 39 samples collected from various countries were subjected to statistical analyses that showed they could be grouped into six groups. Topotypes of H. pseudorobustus and H. microlobus belong to two different groups. However, samples in the other groups were morphologically intermediate between these two groups. Sugarcane plant samples affected by the disease pokkah boeng were collected from the major sugarcane producing areas in Iran. Fifty isolates of Fusarium verticillioides were recovered from diseased sugarcanes. Results of pathogenicity tests revealed that all isolates were pathogenic to sugarcane. Four hundred and eighty-five nitrate non-utilising mutants were generated from F. verticillioides isolates. Media used for nit mutant generation included potato dextrose agar, minimal medium and Czapeck agar amended with 1.8%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3% potassium chlorate. Nit mutants were divided into three ph

ABSTRACT Methanogens are of great importance in carbon cycling and alternative energy production, but quantitation with culture-based methods is time-consuming and biased against methanogen groups that are difficult to cultivate in a laboratory. For these reasons, methanogens are typically studied through culture-independent molecular techniques. We developed a SYBR green I quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay to quantify total numbers of methyl coenzyme M reductase α-subunit (mcrA) genes. TaqMan probes were also designed to target nine different phylogenetic groups of methanogens in qPCR assays. Tot

The relative abundances of specific microbial taxa are quantified in samples of marine picoplankton, as detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and catalyzed reporter deposition. Two sets of samples were analysed. Set 1, including samples collected in three herds, was analysed by the Central Laboratory at České Budějovice. TBC was determined using the apparatus Bactoscan, and PBC by culture according to IDF standards. Relative index pi expressing the PBC/TBC ratio was calculated for each sample. The value of pi for Set 1 was 0.09, ranging in herds included in this set from 0.05

Although results of different thermal–optical measurement techniques are comparable for total carbon, they can vary widely for values of elemental carbon especially in the presence of brown carbon. Charring of organic material during the inert heating phase of thermal–optical measurements has been found to be a major confounder, but no literature about investigations of structural changes during this process in atmospheric aerosols is available.
