When coordinating two hands to achieve a common goal, the nervous system has to assign responsibility to each hand. Optimal control theory suggests that this problem is solved by minimizing costs such as the variability of movement and effort. However, the natural tendency to produce similar movements during bimanual tasks has been somewhat ignored by this approach. We consider a task in which participants were asked to track a moving target by means of a single cursor controlled simultaneously by the two hands. Two types of hand-cursor mappings were tested: one in which the cursor position re

Phase coupling between movement trajectories has been proposed as the basic mechanism of hand coordination in the production of bimanual rhythmic movements with a 1:2 frequency ratio. Here a central temporal coupling view is proposed as an alternative. Extending previous models of two-handed synchronic and alternate-hand tapping, we hypothesized that 1:2 tapping is performed under the control of a single internal timekeeper set at the frequency required for the fast hand. The fast hand is assumed to use every signal and the slow hand every other signal of the timekeeper, to produce actions coo

Abstract:
To explain social decline, a first mechanism notes that elites, understood as small and relatively homogeneous groups, have a superiority to act in concert, compared to the masses. When the capitalist dynamics offers great opportunities to take advantage, and when such opportunities distribute costs over large groups, while concentrating the benefits in a few hands, then the elites have an incentive to intervene. To maintain privileged access to opportunities, elites seek alliances and resort to all forms of social power. Society decays when this path transforms it into a network of particularistic groups, committed to dividing given resources, instead of innovating and improving. A second mechanism is based on the responses of complex societies to challenges. The answers try to bridge the gap between the complexity of the control system and the increased complexity of the controlled system. They may consist either in constructing hierarchical modules, so that many subjects obey a few, or in multiplying the connections through reticular structures. The more the answer stratifies the hierarchy, the more the management costs of the apparatus increase. On the other hand, the more it insists on links, the more coordination costs increase between the many players in the network. The society tends to swing from one to the other, depending on which becomes more onerous. But both modes lead in the long run to decreasing energy returns, pushing the system on a path of decline. Even without the claim of composing an exhaustive investigation, the two mechanisms arise from some of the most relevant and recurrent characteristics of complex human societies: respectively, the difficulties of cooperation and the difficulties of responding to the arising of new systemic problems. In this sense, the two mechanisms may be able to help us understand what happens and what could happen.

Abstract:
AbstractGovernance is both a contested concept and an increasingly empirical concern. On the one hand, it has become an almost universal and all-encompassing concept, which has attracted scholarly interest from many disciplines and over many decades to tackle the dilemmas of collective action and to facilitate effective coordination of interests and resources toward commonly accepted goals. On the other hand, conceptions of governance vary considerably, and their meanings depend on disciplinary perspectives, theoretical traditions, and empirical focus. Although it is easy to agree what governance is not, it is more challenging to create broad consensus on what it is and how it works effectively. Most capaciously, governance denotes the coordination of collective action. These actions take place in institutionally or physically organized spaces of interaction, where knowledge is needed to shape governance appropriately. Organized spaces and knowledge are both conditions as well as consequences of the governance process.

This paper scrutinizes the insights won by recent studies in wealth inequality in pre-industrial Europe. It focuses on the regions and periods where levels of inequality were relatively low, trying to arrive at an inventory of causes of these exceptions. It discusses catastrophic events, colonization and revolution as possible causes, but argues that these only occasionally had a leveling effect, depending on the social and institutional context in which they occurred. Most clearly wealth accumulation was restricted, even by maximums on ownership, where associative organizations held a solid position, and market and state played lesser roles as coordination systems.

The authors developed a quantitative approach using Smart-PLS version 3 to reveal the views of different experts based on their experiences in water-related adaptation to climate change in the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) in Uganda. A sample size of 152 was computed from a population size of 245 across the districts of Buikwe, Jinja, Mukono, Kampala, and Wakiso. The chapter aimed to determine the relationship among the availability of legal, regulatory, and administrative frameworks, public water investment, price and demand management, information requirements, coordination structures, and analytical frameworks and how they influence the development of water resource management frameworks. The findings revealed that the availability of legal, regulatory, and administrative frameworks, public water investment, price and demand management, information requirements, and coordination structures had significant and positive effects on the development of water resource management frameworks. Public water investment had the highest path coefficient (β = 0.387 and p = 0.000), thus indicating that it has the greatest influence on the development of water resource management frameworks. The R2 value of the model was 0.714, which means that the five exogenous latent constructs collectively explained 71.4% of the variance in the development. The chapter suggests putting special emphasis on public water investment to achieve an effective development of water resource management frameworks. These findings can support the practitioners and decision makers engaged in water-related adaptation to climate change within the LVB and beyond.

Abstract:
AbstractParkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects primarily motor system. Physical exercise is considered important for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) to slow down disease progression and maintain abilities and quality of life. However, people with PD often experience barriers to exercises that causes low-level adherence to exercise plans and programs. Virtual Reality (VR) is an innovative and promising technology for motor and cognitive rehabilitation. Immersive VR exergames have potential advantages by allowing for individualized skill practice in a motivating interactive environment without distractions from outside events. This paper presents an immersive virtual reality (VR) exergame aiming at motor training on fingers and hand-and-eye coordination. The results from the usability study indicate that immersive VR exergames have potential to provide motivating and engaging physical exercise for people with PD. Through this research, we hope to contribute to evidence-based design principles for task-specific immersive VR exergames for patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

This lesson guides the fingers of the left hand, in coordination with the ear, into a healthy understanding of how gut strings, more supple than modern ones, behave. An exercise explores the amount of pressure each finger needs for the sound to be clear and how to avoid excessive pressure. The rest of the lesson deals with the fingers as “slaves of our inner voice,” conveying to the string the intricate subtleties of phrasing and timing that spring from our artistry and our imagination. Two basic ways of lowering and raising the fingers (active and passive) are discussed, but this is not a merely technical issue: it is a way of unblocking the channel between intention and realization, releasing the flow from our inner singing voice through the medium of our physical movements and on unimpeded into the sound.

Instead, the EIR, on the one hand, seems to permit the ‘one group—one COMI’ rule, even to a limited extent, and, on the other hand, provides for two different regulatory devices of procedural consolidation, one based on the duties of ‘cooperation and communication’ and the other on a system of ‘coordination’ to be set up between the many proceedings affecting companies belonging to the same group.

The first chapter motivates the book’s central research question: how did the German variant of capitalism emerge, and what today is its central functioning logic? The chapter argues that past and recent accounts of Germany’s economic performance and economic policy have failed to fully explain how long-term stable economic coordination could have evolved in as large a country as Germany, and that this has also translated into an often biased view of Germany’s current economic policies. The chapter sketches the basic argument of the book—namely that the German welfare state was the prime means of economic coordination for unions and employers, labor and capital—and situates it in two relevant literatures: the Varieties of Capitalism literature on the one hand and the Comparative Welfare State literature on the other. Abstract Robust product design is a two-objective optimization problem in nature. On the one hand, it is wished to minimize variations in product performance (i.e. first goal); on the other hand, it is desired to maximize product functionality (i.e. second goal). As known, these design goals may not arrive at their own optima at the same time; therefore, coordination between the two perfonning goals is needed during the design iterations to help achieve high robustness in product performance in the sense that a best compromise design is reached. In this work, a coordination-based robust design

The need to divide attention in order to deal with information flowing in from a number of sources is observable in many work settings. Although most people can perform several simple activities concurrently, such as eating and watching television (Sharon, 1997), making simultaneous decisions is difficult (Pashler & Johnston, 1998). For the majority, task overload causes errors in performance (Girard, 2007), a decline in the quality of treatment (Ruthruff et al., 2001), and longer reaction time (Levy et al., 2006). The few who cope efficiently under such circumstances employ different cogn

Helping resident surgeons quickly and accurately develop expertise in clinical skills is crucial for improving patient safety and care. Because most surgical skills require visually aided device manipulations, developing effective eye-hand coordination is a crucial component of most surgical training. While eye-hand coordination has typically been evaluated on the basis of time to complete a task and number of errors, growing evidence suggests that task performance can be distinguished by detecting eye gaze patterns and movement planning. However, few studies have explored methods for collecti

Uniaxial human skin viscoelasticity has been demonstrated in vitro (Pan et al., 1998). Although some have experimentally measured in vivo finger pad viscoleasticity under normal compression (e.g. Jindirch et al., 2003), none have measured its response to shear load. Knowledge of the viscoelastic properties of the finger pad is important for understanding dynamic finger force coordination during manipulation. While finite element models (FEM) of the finger pad have been developed for dynamic loading studies (e.g. Wu et al., 2002; 2003), these models have not been validated using experimental da

Abstract This paper reports on an experiment in human subject balance and coordination using a HTC Vive head mounted display to create a virtual environment. For the experiment, 30 male human subjects of college age and 30 female subjects of college age were asked to navigate along a clear path in a virtual world using a controller with their dominant hand and asked to balance a virtual ball on a virtual plate using the other controller in the non-dominant hand. The test subjects moved along a clearly marked path, with three surprise obstacles occurring: a large rock landing near the path, and

Abstract This paper builds up on a recently developed novel planar inter-joint finger kinematic model for human hand configurations, which applies to the realization of a naturalistic human finger motion. The model is a function of the finger anthropomorphic data and is derived based on the geometry of a hand shape grasping a virtual cylindrical object. Unlike well-known inverse kinematics models, the inter-joint model is capable of describing the natural rotation configuration of the joints of a long finger independently by a single parameter, the radius of the cylindrical object.
