Abstract:
The goal of this research is to explore the control of a robotic arm in a visually guided reaching operation. Considering the role of the superior colliculus and the spinal cord in human arm movements, this study proposes simple approaches for the control of arm reaching. An efficient use of distance error signals between actual and desired end-point positions leads to reaching trajectories in two dimensions that are very similar to more traditional kinematic strategies. This implies that the nature of the premotor signal in the spinal cord may be related to simple error signals rather than trajectories.<br>The main conclusions to be stated from this work have two implications. First that a very simple biomimetic strategy can be used to control a robotic arm, and produces trajectories very similar to those seen in human reaching. Second, the hardware tests act as indirect proof that many concepts in biological motor control need to be revisited. For example, the need for complex kinematic computations is now de-emphasized.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to present a design approach for compliant bistable four-link mechanisms. The design constraints are the two positions of the mechanism, the force required to snap between the positions and the fatigue life of the designed mechanism. The theory presented here will be applied to the door lock mechanism used in commercial dishwashers, which is originally designed as a rigid inverted slider crank mechanism snapping between two positions with the force applied by a spring. The mechanism is re-designed as a compliant bistable four-link mechanism and a prototype has been manufactured.

In practice, channel coefficient information may not be available. Hence, a blind detection may be necessary. In addition, the direct link from a source to a destination may not be available. Therefore, information may have to flow through a relay, which is called a two-hop relay network. This thesis analyses the performance of the two-hop relay network by applying a blind detection assuming a decode-and-forward relay.<br>Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Ullah, Tania. "Modeling a two-link rigid swimmer scalloping in linear viscoelastic fluid." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/40938.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2007.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 44).<br>In his renowned lecture on Life at low Reynolds number, E.M. Purcell established that a rigid swimmer comprised of two links cannot swim in a viscous Newtonian fluid due to the reciprocal nature of its movements. Viscoelastic fluid, on the other hand, has a characteristic time scale associated with stress relaxation and can impart asymmetrical stresses on the body of a swimmer to propel it forward. This work focuses on developing a theoretical model for the fluid-structure interactions that influence the swimming of a two-link specimen in viscoelastic fluid. Because the oscillation of the slender rods that comprise the links of the swimmer elicit a response from the surrounding fluid at various frequencies, the modeling consisted of a complex Fourier analysis. This paper discusses in detail the physics of the specimen's swimming and the equations that govern its movement in the fluid. The work done has been purely theoretical; however, a numerical simulation to validate the theory will be conducted as future work.<br>by Tania Ullah.<br>S.B.

Abstract:
A highly survivable communication network is desirable, as service disruption is usually not tolerated. In this thesis we mainly investigate and discuss the survivability of two specific communication networks, termed topology 1 and 2, under usual network failures. The survivability of the networks mainly comes from their structure. Both topologies have different routes between all source-destination pairs, which gives the networks high route diversity. In fact, both topologies considered are regular networks with connectivity 3. Discussion starts by defining several network properties, such as average route-length and link and node utilization, for the fault-free condition. Alterations of these properties are investigated when a network failure takes place. Using the results for fault-free and faulty situations, a comparison is made between the topologies. Topologies 1 and 2 are also compared with other standard topologies like full ring, square grid and star topologies. Another regular network topology called the star-ring topology is also introduced and investigated for the same properties. Enough insight is given to devise an optimal re-routing strategy when a network failure takes place. A new idea of static routing strategy called the Static Disjoint Routing Strategy is introduced. This disjoint routing strategy is proven to be close in performance to that of traditional Dynamic Shortest Routing with a considerable gain in ease of operation. The disjoint routing table is used to investigate whether any link or node becomes over utilized in faulty situations. On the whole both topologies were found to be highly survivable structures with reasonable cost.<br>Master of Science

Planar two-link manipulators are among the most accessible two-degree-of-freedom robots for students because they function like human arms. As a result they are ideal for laboratory teaching environments. While previous designs using belt-driven arms served adequately, this new design possesses a number of features that were not possible with the previous design, including more intuitive simplified dynamics, an expanded workspace allowing multiple full rotations, and the ability to be easily reconfigured into an acrobot (an underactuated double-pendulum which can be stabilized in a vertical configuration while being actuated only at the middle joint). The governing equations of the system are derived and an analysis of velocity control in the xy plane is perform and a control methodology is also presented by which the arm can be stabilized vertically while in its acrobot configuration. A Discussion of tradeoffs relevant to the future design of similar systems is also presented.<br>by David C. Schafer.<br>S.B.

RUSOLO, Fabiola. "From hepatocarcinoma to breast cancer: selenoproteins as link between two different reality." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi del Molise, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11695/76092.

Abstract:
It is known primarily for its antioxidant activity, for its chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, (Papp et al. 2007) hence its deficiency has been recognized as a contributing factor to pathophysiological conditions, including heart disease, neuromuscular disorders, cancer, male infertility and inflammation. Much of its beneficial influence on human health is attributed to its presence within at least 25 proteins (Selenoproteins) (Papp et al. 2007). It is becoming more evident how the cancer and its the behaviour not dependent only on the genetics of tumor cells but also by surrounding milieu [stromal tissue (immune cells, fibro¬blasts, myofibroblasts, cytokines, and vascular tissue), as well as the surrounding extracellular matrix], necessary for tumor cells survival, growth, proliferation and metastasis. Inflammatory cells and mediators are present in the microenvironment of most, if not all, tumors, irrespective of the trigger for development (Leonardi et al. 2012). Hepatocarcinoma (HCC) and Breast Cancer (BC) are examples. The liver is a hormone-sensitive organ and a several lines of evidence suggest that sex hormones and their receptors play a role in liver carcinogenesis (Wang et al. 2006). Continuous oxidative stress, impaired synthesis of antioxidant enzymes in HCC and in BC, un-regulated synthesis and secretion of sex hormones laid the foundation for research into selenoproteins a great help, not only to mitigate these mechanisms, but also to modulate the hormonal signaling exacerbating the hepatocarcinogenesis. The aim of thesis has been to identify selenoproteins, whose de-regulation was, potentially, associated to hepatocarcinogenesis and to breast cancer. These preliminary investigations direct future studies to understand how BC cells can influence the hepatocarcinogenesis through the secretion of hormones, cytokines, chemokines and growth factors and how the HCC cells can exercise control on breast cancer progression. Furthermore, it will be interesting to investigate how the modulation of selenoproteins, by treatment with selenium alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic molecules, might influence the key signaling of these two cancers.

Fuller, Rachel. "The link between consumer memory and brand choice : a comparison across two markets." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27343.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to clarify the link between consumer memory and brand choice, which is a seminal assumption of prominent marketing theories and brand management practises, such as Customer Based Brand Equity (CBBE; Keller, 1993, 2003). The aim is important for two reasons: (i) recent evidence has questioned the precise nature of the link (e.g., Stocchi et al., 2015), thus potentially challenging a long-standing body of CBBE research; and (ii) up-to-date efforts in CBBE research have shifted towards linking the two aspects (memory and choice) to conceptualise CBBE as a process (e.g., Christodoulides et al., 2015; Grohs et al., 2016), but how exactly this can happen is still in its infancy (Stocchi and Fuller, 2017). The aim is addressed with two objectives. The first objective is to develop a new framework that conceptualises and operationalises the link between consumer memory and brand choice. This is reinforced with the second objective, which uses the framework to examine the link in, and across, two different markets ( repertoire and subscription markets; see Sharp et al., 2002). Importantly, the second objective addresses an additional problem of theoretical and practical relevance, which is a bias of CBBE research in goods markets (Christodoulides and de Chernatony, 2009) and an absence of comparative research across markets. This problem is worth addressing given the growing prevalence of non-goods offerings (Ostrom et al., 2014). The development of the new framework derives from the clarification and integration of two established research streams: brand retrieval research, which offers insight into the cognitive processes involved in the link between consumer memory and brand choice, and hierarchical models of brand choice, which detail the stages that brands move through in memory before choice. Specifically, the new framework provides a theoretically robust and multi-level examination of how consumers narrow down brands for choice in memory, which includes: (i) brand retrieval propensity (i.e., the likelihood to think of a brand(s) in purchase occasions; Romaniuk, 2013); (ii) the stages involved in the brand choice process, including the extent to which consumers narrow down brands between the stages; (iii) the relationship between brand retrieval and brand choice; and (iv) a feedback loop controlling for the impact of prior brand usage. The operationalization of the new framework is based on existing and new measures, thereby delivering some methodological advancements. The data used to examine the link between consumer memory and brand choice in and across markets derives from a large-scale UK consumer survey (N=771) capturing brand usage, brand awareness and brand image data for soft drinks (a proxy for repertoire markets) and banking (a proxy for subscription markets), from the same consumers, over three time periods. These tightly controlled variables support a robust comparison of the link across markets, which is facilitated further with the employment of a suite of empirical tools, including mean absolute deviations (MADs), correlations, ANOVAs and multiple linear regression. The thesis offers several theoretical contributions. Firstly, by clarifying the link between consumer memory and brand choice, the new framework addresses concerns over the validity of the link (Stocchi et al., 2015) and clarifies how CBBE can be conceptualized and measured as a process (Christodoulides et al., 2015). Moreover, the results of the thesis showed that the link between consumer memory and brand choice differs across markets, specifically: (i) consumers find it easier to think of subscription market brands in purchase occasions; (ii) subscription market brands face fiercer competition at the early stages of the brand choice process vs. the later stages for repertoire market brands; and (iii) consumers draw on memorized brand information to a greater extent when purchasing in subscription markets. These insights contribute to brand loyalty literature, where they offer a first simultaneous examination of the cognitive origins of loyalty (i.e., across multiple stages); and challenge Service Dominant Logic (SDL), where they reinforce the need to recognize differences between markets. Furthermore, the results offer novel insights for brand retrieval research by illustrating that such differences may originate, at least in part, from the prevalence of different pathways to brand retrieval, most notably recollection (the retrieval of experiential brand information). Managerially, the framework provides an advanced brand management tool that features key performance metrics related to brand choice, and advice for managers of how to build them. For instance, from the results in this thesis, the advice to managers in subscription markets is to build and reinforce attribute-to-brand cues in memory, and links from the brand to the category; whilst managers in repertoire markets should focus on building and reinforcing reasons to buy.

Tse, Hin-yan Caleb, and 謝獻恩. "Innovative capacity development : performance link for firms in an emerging market : a two-part study." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/196094.

Full text
Abstract:
As the role of emerging markets become increasingly important in today‘s global economy, recent research has proliferated in topics such as new marketing perspectives (Sheth, 2011), successful firm entry (Johnson and Tellis, 2008), and innovation in emerging markets (Immelt, Govindarajan, and Trimble, 2009). Innovation in particular has become an important topic. Following this line of research this two-part thesis covers two different perspectives of firm innovation in an emerging market: (1) How domestic Chinese firms globalize and learn through innovation and (2) How foreign firms effectively innovate within China. Through this two-part thesis, I hope to contribute to the growing body of literature on firms’ strategies, particularly in developing innovative capacity for performance, in emerging markets. In the first part, I investigate how domestic Chinese firms learn through innovation and other mechanisms, as they internationalize through exporting activities. As China continues to display its influence on developed markets and the global economy, it is increasingly important to examine issues surrounding the globalization of Chinese firms. Research has documented a “learning-by-exporting” (LBE) effect in which firms (especially from emerging markets) learn through exporting, leading to productivity improvements. Yet prior studies have not discovered the exact learning mechanisms involved. Thus, this study “opens the black box” in examining how and under what conditions firms learn and achieve these productivity gains. I posit that firms leverage their learning through innovativeness, production capability improvements and managerial improvements. I test my hypotheses with panelized data on over 240,000 privately-owned Chinese firms between 2001 and 2007. All three mechanisms show a parallel and significant mediation between firm exporting and firm productivity. Furthermore, I find that the salience of these mechanisms is contingent upon industry characteristics: firms in industries with intensive R&D and moderate exporting demonstrate the most learning through all three conduits. In the second part, I take a reverse perspective and investigate how foreign firms set up their operations in China with the purpose of innovating, and highlight the effective strategies involved in this process. Foreign firms are increasingly moving their research operations to emerging markets, which represents a new technology strategy involving significant investments in R&D resources and local technological talent. Using absorptive capacity as a theoretical framework, I examine the effectiveness of this strategy and its boundary conditions. Specifically, how can establishing a local knowledge base (reflecting path dependency), obtaining local government support (to mitigate appropriability risks), and employing a strongly controlled organizational mode (wholly owned subsidiaries) facilitate foreign firms’ technology strategy in an emerging market? To test these postulates, I consider the innovative and local market performance of 524 foreign firms (216 wholly owned foreign subsidiaries and 308 international joint ventures) in China in 2008. The significant empirical support for my hypotheses contributes to the growing literature on foreign firms’ R&D strategy, emerging market innovations, and organizational entry modes.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Business<br>Doctoral<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
The usage of eye trackers is becoming more and more popular in the field of information visualization. In this project two eye trackers, The Eye Tribe nd Mirametrix S2, are used to obtain eye tracking data for visualizations. It is planned to use the eye trackers with OnGraX, a network visualization system, where they will provide data for the implementation of visualizations, specifically, heatmaps. OnGraX already uses heatmaps to show regions in a network that have been in the viewport of the user. One aim of this thesis will be the comparison between the two eye trackers, and if the use of eye tracking data gives better results thatn the already existing viewport-based approach. At the same time, we provide the foundation for adaptive visualizations with OnGraX. Our research problem is also of interest for visualization in general, because it will help to improve and develop eye tracking technology in this context. To support the outcome of our implementation, we carried out a user study. As a result, we concluded that one of the two eye trackers appears to have more capabilities than the other, and that using the eye tracking data is a more preferred way of depicting the heatmaps on OnGraX.

Full text
Abstract:
Global Positioning System and nomad devices are increasingly used to provide data from individuals in urban traffic networks. In these two papers we focus on consistent estimators of a route choice model and link speed. In many different applications, it is important to predict the continuation of an observed path, and also, given sparse data, predict where the individual (or vehicle) has been. Estimating the perceived cost functions is a difficult statistical estimation problem, for different reasons. First, the choice set is typically very large. Second, it may be important to take into account the correlation between the (generalized) costs of different routes, and thus allow for realistic substitution patterns. Third, due to technical or privacy considerations, the data may be temporally and spatially sparse, with only partially observed paths. Finally, the position of vehicles may have measurement errors. We address all these problems using an indirect inference (II) approach. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed estimator in a model with random link costs, allowing for a natural correlation structure across paths, where the full choice set is considered. In the second paper, we develop an estimator for the mean speed and travel time based on indirect inference when the data are spatially and temporally sparse. With sparse data, the full path of vehicles are not observed, which is typically addressed using map matching techniques. First, we show how speed can be estimated using an auxiliary model which includes map matching and a model of route choice. Next, we further develop the estimator and show how both speed and the route choice model can be jointly estimated by using iteration between an II estimator of speed and the II estimator of the route choice model (developed in Paper I). Monte Carlo evidence is provided which demonstrates that the estimator is able to accurately estimate both speed and parameters of the route choice model.<br><p>QC 20130521</p>

Abstract:
AC/DC adapters mostly employ two-stage topology: Power Factor Correction (PFC) pre-regulation stage followed by an isolated DC/DC converter stage. Low power AC/DC adapters require a small size to be competitive. Among their components, the bulk DC-link capacitor is one of the largest because it should keep the output voltage with low ripple. Also, the size of this capacitor is penalized due to the universal line voltage application. Synchronization through employing leading edge modulation for the first PFC stage and trailing edge modulation for the second DC/DC converter stage can significantly reduce the ripple current and ripple voltage of the DC-link capacitor. Thus, a smaller DC-link capacitance can be used, lowering the cost and size of the AC/DC adapter. Benefits of the synchronous switching scheme were already demonstrated experimentally. However, no mathematical analysis was presented. In this thesis, detailed mathematical analyses in per-unit quantity are given to facilitate the calculation of the DC-link capacitor ripple current reduction with Leading/Trailing Edge Modulation strategies. One of the limitations of leading/trailing edge modulation is that the switching frequencies of the two stages need to be equal to achieve the best reduction of the DC-link capacitor ripple current. The DC-link capacitor ripple current will become larger if the switching frequency of the DC/DC converter is larger than that of the PFC pre-regulator, which blocks us to employ higher frequency for isolated DC/DC converter to reduce its transformer size. This thesis proposed a new Leading/Trailing Edge Modulation strategy to further reduce the DC-link bulk capacitor ripple current when switching frequency of DC/DC converter stage is twice the switching frequency of PFC stage. This proposed pulse width modulation scheme was verified by simulation. Experimental results obtained through digital control based on FPGA are also presented in this thesis.

Abstract:
In order to address problems caused by widespread squatting, the government of Trinidad and Tobago has recently introduced legislation which grants a leasehold title to squatters on State lands, subject to certain conditions. The adoption of such regularization measures rests on the belief that granting squatters legal title to the land they occupy, and thus providing them with security of tenure, will create an incentive for squatters to invest in their dwellings and in their community, and will facilitate access to credit.<br>This thesis critically examines these assumptions, bringing to bear on this reflection the results of a survey conducted in two squatter settlements in Trinidad. In so doing. it explores the role of law in development and, further, it questions the capacity of law to guide and modify social behaviour.

de, Rooij A. "Hacking into the emotion-creativity link : two new approaches to interactive systems that influence the relationship between emotion and creativity." Thesis, City University London, 2016. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/15121/.

Full text
Abstract:
Emotions can influence creative thinking. The ability of people to have the emotions that augment creativity can therefore help them to achieve higher creative task performance. How to design interactive systems that can effectively make use of this potential is, however, still an unanswered question. To explore possible answers to this question we have developed two novel approaches to interactive systems that can be used to effectively hack into the emotion-creativity link. One approach we developed enables a system to hack into the function of motor expressions in emotion regulation, in order to regulate the emotions that happen spontaneously during a creative task. We demonstrate that embodied interactions designed based on motor expressions, while used to interact with a system, can influence an intended emotion, and thereby influence the relationship between emotion and creativity. The second approach that we developed enables a system to hack into the cognitive appraisal processes that help cause emotion during a creative task. We demonstrate that believable computer generated feedback about the originality of a user’s own ideas, can be manipulated to help cause an intended emotion, determine its intensity, and thereby also influence the relationship between emotion and creativity. The contribution of this thesis is the development of two novel approaches to interactive systems that aim to influence the emotion-creativity link and in particular the explication of the mechanisms underlying these approaches. The studies form a novel contribution to both interactive systems research and the creativity sciences.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 1998.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 175-179).<br>This thesis deals with two topics in lattice field theories. In the first part we discuss aspects of renormalization group flow and non-perturbative improvement of actions for scalar theories regularized on a lattice. We construct a perfect action, an action which is free of lattice artifacts, for a given theory. It is shown how a good approximation to the perfect action - referred to as classically perfect - can be constructed based on a well-defined blocking scheme for the 0(3) non-linear o-model. We study the O(N) non-linear r-model in the large-N limit and derive analytically its perfect action. This action is applied to the 0(3) model on a square lattice. The Wolff cluster algorithm is used to simulate numerically the system. We perform scaling tests and discuss the scaling properties of the large-N inspired perfect action as opposed to the standard and the classically perfect action. In the second part we present a new formulation for a quantum field theory with Abelian gauge symmetry. A Hamiltonian is constructed on a four-dimensional Euclidean space-time lattice which is invariant under local transformations. The model is formulated as a 5-dimensional path integral of discrete variables. We argue that dimensional reduction will allow us to study the behavior of the standard compact U(1) gauge theory in 4-d. Based on the idea of the loop-cluster algorithm for quantum spins, we present the construction of a flux-cluster algorithm for the U(1) quantum link model for the spin-1/2 quantization of the electric flux. It is shown how improved estimators for Wilson loop expectation values can be defined. This is important because the Wilson loops are traditionally used to identify confining and Coulomb phases in gauge theories. Our study indicates that the spin-1/2 U(1) quantum link model is strongly coupled for all bare coupling values we examined.<br>by Antonios S. Tsapalis.<br>Ph.D.

Donner, Christopher Matthew. "Examining the link between self-control and misconduct in a multi-agency sample of police supervisors: A test of two theories." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4470.

Full text
Abstract:
As police personnel carry out their mandates of enforcing the law, maintaining order, and serving the public, they are entrusted to "practice what they preach." They are expected to abide by the rules, laws, and ethical principles that apply to them as they hold private citizens to account for violations of laws. When the police do not live up to this standard by committing police misconduct, it can tarnish not just the individual officer, but the department and jurisdiction as well. Police misconduct is a concern for society as police misbehavior can result in negative outcomes, such as distrust by the citizenry, poor police-community relations, and litigation. Therefore, it is important for academics and police administrators to gain a better understanding of why police personnel engage in occupational deviance. A sizable literature has identified several individual, organizational, and community-level correlates of police misconduct, but there is a general dearth of knowledge concerning criminological explanations for police misconduct. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential relationship between self-control and police misconduct utilizing two versions of self-control theory. The primary objectives of the dissertation were to: (1) investigate whether self-control predicts police misconduct; and, if so, (2) identify which version of self-control theory best explains police misconduct. The original version of self-control theory (Gottfredson and Hirschi, 1990) hypothesizes that crime and deviant behavior are the result of low self-control, which is characterized by impulsivity, a preference for simple tasks, a proclivity for risk-seeking activities, self-centeredness, and a quick temper. More than a decade later, Hirschi (2004) revised the theory in an effort to address several shortcomings of the original theoretical model. In this revision, he moved the focus away from the personality trait of self-control to a rational choice, decision-making conceptualization, which he argued is more consistent with the original intent of the theory. From this new perspective, self-control refers to an internal set of inhibitors that influence the choices people make. Data were collected through online surveys of 101 police supervisors within three U.S. police agencies. The respondents are part of a larger research project, known as the National Police Research Platform, which is funded by the National Institute of Justice. The data were analyzed using a series of correlational and multiple regression strategies. Based on theory and prior research, it was hypothesized that measures of both theoretical versions would significantly predict police misconduct and that, in a full regression model, both versions would yield significant (and independent) effects. As predicted by the hypotheses, the results demonstrated that low self-control (as a measure of Gottfredson and Hirschi's theoretical version) and revised self-control (as a measure of Hirschi's revised theoretical version) were both significantly related to past police misconduct and the likelihood of future police misconduct. Furthermore, both measures produced independent effects in full regression models. Lastly, as evinced by standardized regression coefficients, the results suggested that revised self-control is the superior theoretical version within the context of police deviance. The finding that self-control is related to police misconduct has important policy implications for police administrators. Specifically, it is recommended that administrators 1) bolster their personnel selection and hiring through the use of more judicious background investigations and increased use of psychological testing; 2) increase the use of integrity-testing strategies, such as early warning systems, to detect problematic employees; and 3) utilize quality police training programs with emphases on ethics, consequences of misbehavior, and mechanisms to strengthen employees' levels of self-control. Study strengths and limitations, as well as directions for future research, are presented.

Abstract:
Includes abstract.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>This research performs two investigations into the causal link between childhood mortality and fertility using Demographic and Health Survey data from Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, countries which are at different stages of the demographic transition. The first investigation assesses the effect of the death of a child on the timing of the birth of the next child. Piecewise log-rate models were used to investigate women who had experienced the loss of a child and in all the countries under study these women were found to have shorter birth intervals. The magnitude of the effect was strongest in Lesotho and Zimbabwe. The second investigation assesses the effect of the death of at least one child on insuring against future mortality. Logistic regression models showed that women aged 35-49 years old who had experienced at least one child death were likely to insure against future child mortality. This effect was most pronounced in Malawi.

Abstract:

Two different styles of texts were chosen for the comparison of the devices used to express a conjunction, which are literary texts and administrative texts. Conjunctions are divided into two types: typical and modal. A typical conjunction expressing relation are pure, and with them no judgement or link with the text is defined. There are four sub-types of typical conjunctions according to the functions the logical semantical devices for connecting sentences perform in the text, which are additive, causal, adversative and temporal conjunctions. The linking device for a modal conjuntion do not only link sentences by a relation, but also define a certain point of view by the addresser towards something that is said, and has a hint of subjectivity; the connecting tools realizing it can express doubt, certainty, emphasis or stand for an informational source. The analysis of the cases of the conjuntions studied allow one to make the following conclusions: 1. The most conjunctions found in the texts analysed were additive conjuntions (45 %). The most common building relationship – extension – in an literary text is expressed by using the building conjuntion ir (“and”), and in administrative texts with the conjunction tačiau (“however”). 2. Abstract:
Survival analysis is an effective tool for conservation studies, since it measure the risk of an event that is important for the survival of populations and preservation of biodiversity. In this thesis three different models for survival analysis are used to estimate the age at breeding between two genetically different populations of brown trout. These populations are an evolutionary enigma, since they apparently coexist in direct competition with each other, which according to ecological theory should not happen. Thus it is of interest if differences between them can be identified. The data consists of brown trouts and has been collected over 20 years. The models are the Cox Proportional Hazards model, the Complementary Log-Log Link model and the Log Logistic Accelerated Failure-Time model. The Cox model were estimated in three different ways due to the nonproportional hazards in the estimates of time to breeding, which gave different interpretations of the same model. All of the models agree that the population B breed at younger ages than the population A, which suggests that the two populations have different reproductive strategies.

碩士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>機械工程系碩士班<br>90<br>Proportional plus derivative (PD) controller has been a popular technique in robot control. A drawback of the PD controller is the requirement of velocity measurements or numerical differentiation of the displacement signal, which is undesirable since the sensor noise may be magnified. Furthermore, in the case of input saturation, the stability of a PD control system may not be readily proved. A control algorithm, called Virtual Passive-Element control (VPE) is applied to the position regulation of a two-link robot manipulator. The algorithm requires measurement of the joint displacement only. Without numerical differentiation of the displacement signals, it has significantly better performance compared to a PD algorithm especially when the encoder resolution is reduced. Using the analogy of nonlinear mechanical spring, stability can be readily proved in the presence of control saturation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>機械工程系碩士班<br>91<br>A novel control algorithm, termed Virtual Vibration Absorber, is applied to trajectory tracking of a robot manipulator with two serial links. Two different trajectories are investigated. The first one is simple harmonic motion along a straight line, and the second is tracking of a circle at a constant speed. The target trajectories for each link are generated from the target path of the end effector. From spectrum analysis these trajectories can be shown to contain multiple frequencies. The driving motor for each joint is thus subject to multi-mode sinusoidal disturbance when the target trajectory is followed. As a result, perfect tracking is impossible using the conventional PID controller. The proposed algorithm emulates a passive vibration absorber, and is shown to be capable of near-perfect tracking even if there are uncertainties in the system parameters. We first analyze the performance of the closed-loop system using computer simulations. It is found that tracking accuracy can be improved by increasing the number of modes in the virtual vibration absorber. The tracking errors is reduced to less than 0.3 % if five or six mode is used. An experimental robot is constructed and real-time testing is conducted to verify the algorithm’s performance. Because of the presence of Coulomb friction and some nonlinearity in the driving motors, the tracking errors are higher than those in simulation, but can still be reduced to below 2 %.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>機電工程學系<br>102<br>This paper presents two smooth control methods for the positioning of a two-link robot manipulator. The two-link robot manipulator is a coupled nonlinear system, and the so-called computed torque control method is employed to obtain a linear model. Then, the linear model is used to develop the smooth control methods. In mechanical systems, if jerk (i.e., the time derivative of acceleration) is too high, it may have adverse effects on the systems and even cause system instability. To avoid the problems with high jerk, jerk-constrained time-optimal control (JCTOC) method is proposed, which constrains the maximum admissible jerk and uses the time-optimal control (TOC) method to produce smooth but fast responses. Furthermore, snap-constrained time-optimal control (SCTOC) method is proposed to constrain the snap, which is the time derivative of jerk, for even smoother responses. In the experimental system, the control kernel is a DSP/FPGA system, and the C language and the VHDL are utilized as development tools for the control system. Experiments of the smooth control methods have been conducted and results show that the proposed smooth control methods are able to yield smoother and also faster responses than the conventional linear approach.
