Currently, the method for diagnosing sepsis is time-consuming and relies on multiple non-specific biomarkers such as Procalcitonin, lactate and C-reactive protein, with blood culturing being the golden standard. Recently proposed and possible sepsis-specific biomarkers are the microRNAs, which are short, ~22 nucleotide long non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post transcriptionally. The boiling flow, of Refrigerant-113, was created in a vertical annular channel whose inner wall was heated. The technique involves the simultaneous use of a two-component laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) for measuring the velocity field, and a fast-response cold-wire for measuring the temperature field. The LDV measuring volume (m.v.) dimensions in the liquid were: 290 microns spanwise length × 55 microns diameter. The 3.8 micron di

Abstract A new idea of a particle handling system is proposed in this paper consisting of a network of channels and a matrix of mechanical gates for fluids. The device consists of a silicon chip encapsulated by two glass chips. A free standing silicone membrane with a thickness of only two microns is used to reduce the cross sections of the channels. The selected cross section of 30 × 7 μm allows to handle particles with sizes ranging from the sub micron scale to a few microns. We could show that the flow of these particles in the channels can be controlled by actuating the valves and monitore

Digital microfluidic manipulation is analyzed for applications extending down to micron-scales. A model is introduced to study the relationship between fluid actuation forces and the resulting resistive viscous and capillary forces that dominate the fluid flow on small dimensions. The results are presented through the analysis of a dynamical model of a novel Digital Microfluidic Multiplexer structure. In essence, the multiplexer is an interdigitated structure that is used to apply electrical signals to individual drops confined between two horizontal plates, about 10–50 microns apart. The mult

The fourth Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRA) regional expert workshop was held in hybrid mode (in person and online) in Bali, Indoneisa from 22–26 January 2024. The goal was to identify and delineate three-dimensional and discrete portions of habitat that are critical to the survival of sharks, rays, and chimaeras (hereafter ‘sharks’), and that have the potential to be managed for conservation. The region covered was Asia. This scientific collaboration amongst regional and global experts resulted in the identification of 122 Important Shark and Ray Areas, 4 candidate ISRA, and 45 Areas of I

The aim of the work is to provide measurable precursor signals associated with the initiation stage of near-surface damage and cracking, as depicted in Fig. 1.1. We have identified many salient features during the early stage of the SCC process (Stages 1, 2 on Fig. 1.1), including residual stress build-up, near-surface (within few microns) defect percolation, and changes of dislocation dynamics and measurable changes of the surface osmic resistance. We developed a model-based prediction of the onset and progression of SCC subsurface damage and assessed the electrochemical impedance spectroscop

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the seismic hazards that can affect Pohnpei Island and provide estimates of the ground motion parameters. The primary parameters are peak ground acceleration (PGA), pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA), and velocity. These values were determined both probabilistically and deterministically to illustrate the overall seismic hazard to Pohnpei Island. A review was conducted of the technical literature to determine geologic studies that have been performed for characterization of the island’s volcanism, stratigraphy, and tectonism.
