Full text
Abstract:
Consideration of the client–therapist match as a contributor, predictor, and optimizer of therapeutic change is not new in the behavioral health field. Indeed, it has evolved from two interactive and co-acting histories: (a) changing practices in psychotherapy research and (b) corresponding changes in the way that clinicians have viewed the role of theory in their practices. In the past three and a half decades, research emphasis has changed to increasingly reflect the roles played by client diagnoses, brands of interventions, and the theories that underlie their use. This chapter reviews the history of psychotherapy research and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). It then describes a contemporary view of RCT design that attempts to incorporate contemporary research developments that are bringing together research and practice.

Abstract:
Most school mathematics is about how one variable, y, varies with respect to one other variable, x, according to an equation such as y = 3x2. Equations like this underpin the student’s knowledge of algebra, and differential and integral calculus. Thermodynamics, however, is necessarily about how a variable, such as the pressure P, varies with respect not to one but to three variables simultaneously – for example, the mole number n, the volume V, and the temperature T. This makes the algebra of thermodynamics more complex, and also implies that mutual changes between pairs of variables is described not in terms of total derivatives of the form dy/dx, but rather by partial derivatives of the form (∂P/∂T)V. Many students find the leap from dy/dx to (∂P/∂T)V very difficult - the purpose of this chapter is therefore to build the reader’s confidence in understanding, and manipulating, functions of two and three variables.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the principles of bivariate analysis as a tool for helping researchers get to know their data and identify patterns of association between two variables. Bivariate analysis offers a way of establishing whether or not there is a relationship between two variables, a dependent variable and an independent variable. With bivariate analysis, theoretical expectations can be compared against evidence from the real world to see if the theory is supported by what is observed. The chapter examines the pattern of association between dependent and independent variables, with particular emphasis on hypothesis testing and significance tests. It discusses ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and cross-tabulation, two of the most widely used statistical analysis techniques in political research. Finally, it explains how to state the null hypothesis, calculate the chi square, and establishing the correlation between the dependent and independent variables.

Abstract:
In the first of these two lectures I describe a gauge theory approach to understanding quantum knot invariants as Laurent polynomials in a complex variable q. The two main steps are to reinterpret three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theory in four dimensional terms and then to apply electric-magnetic duality. The variable q is associated to instanton number in the dual description in four dimensions. In the second lecture, I describe how Khovanov homology can emerge upon adding a fifth dimension.

Horne, Cynthia M. Classifying Countries within the Transitional Justice Typology. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198793328.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 explores each of the country cases in this project, namely the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, and Albania. The chapter provides historical details of the transitional justice reforms in all twelve countries from 1989–2013, covering lustration, file access, public disclosures, and truth commissions. This material is then used to place each country case within the typology developed in Chapter 1, according to whether the measures were expansive and included compulsory employment change, limited and included largely voluntary employment change, informal and largely symbolic, or actively rejected. The chapter provides variable conceptualization and operationalization specifics to be used in the subsequent statistical analyses, including three different lustration variables, a truth commission variable, and timing of reform variables. It provides qualitative, comparative historical details to justify the classification of countries according to the primary independent variable, namely lustration and public disclosure programs.
